"Fantastic" 26 y/o Celtic ace emerges as "surprise" target for huge club

A “fantastic” Celtic player is seen as a transfer target for one of the biggest clubs in Europe, according to a fresh transfer update that has emerged regarding their summer business.

Celtic pull 16 points clear at the top

It proved to be another good weekend for Brendan Rodgers’ side in the Scottish Premiership title race, following an emphatic 5-2 victory away to St Mirren on Saturday.

Not only that, but Rangers also lost 2-1 at home to Motherwell, meaning Celtic have now opened up a 16-point lead at the top of the table. While the manager and his players won’t allow themselves to get carried away, they must also feel like they have one hand on yet another league troophy.

Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates after winning the League Cup

In terms of Hoops transfer news, Rodgers has confirmed that he will discuss a potential permanent move for loanee Jeffrey Schlupp, saying: “I’ll have a chat with Jeffrey towards the latter part of the season. It was the case of him coming in and settling and getting to understand how he plays. I think we can all see he has that Premier League physicality and quality.”

Meanwhile, Borja Sainz is a player who has been linked with a move to Celtic at the end of the season, having scored 15 goals in 30 appearances for Norwich City in the Championship this season. The Spaniard would provide additional firepower for the Scottish champions, and at 24, there is also still so much more to come from him.

Worrying Celtic exit rumour emerges

Now, according to InterLive.it [via Sport Witness], Inter Milan are interested in signing Celtic right-back Alistair Johnston this summer. The 26-year-old is seen as a “surprise name” on the Serie A champions’ list of transfer targets in that position, and there is belief that they could snap him up for around £8m.

Celtic defender Alistair Johnston.

Losing Johnston would be a big blow for Celtic, considering what a model of consistency he has been at right-back ever since arriving from CF Montreal in 2023. The Canada international has bagged four goals and seven assists in the Scottish Premiership this season, also averaging 2.4 clearances and 1.7 tackles per game across 25 appearances in the competition, showing what an effective all-round footballer he is.

Rodgers is clearly a big admirer of his full-back, too, saying of him back in November of last year: “He’s clearly a player we would want to tie down. He’s a fantastic guy to work with on and off the pitch, so hopefully in the future that can be the case.”

The hope is that Johnston feels settled at Parkhead, not wanting to move on any time soon, but his head could be turned by interest from a club of Inter’s stature.

He's better than Tierney: Celtic must rue losing "world-class" star for £0

ByDan Emery Mar 3, 2025

Should the Canadian want to leave, Celtic must make sure that they receive a healthy amount for his signature, however – £8m at a bare minimum – especially as his current deal doesn’t expire until the summer of 2029.

Celtic once had the ‘best striker’ after Larsson, now he’s in the 8th tier

Celtic are down but not yet out of this season’s Champions League.

On Wednesday night, in the first leg of their knockout phase tie against Bayern Munich, the Hoops were beaten 2-1, leaving them with a mountain to climb in Bavaria next Tuesday.

Daizen Maeda’s header 11 minutes from time did spark a late onslaught, but the Bundesliga leaders held on for victory.

That goal, while it may ultimately not be enough to see Brendan Rodgers’ reach the round of 16, did set some Celtic history, but it’s a star from the last time Celtic reached the Champions League knockout stages 12 years ago who’s been in the news since.

Daizen Maeda's record-breaking tally

Maeda’s late goal in mid-week was his fourth in this season’s Champions League, having previously netted against Slovan Bratislava, Borussia Dortmund and Club Brugge during the league phase.

Daizen Maeda

This makes the Japanese forward the first Celtic player since Joe Craig in 1977/78 to score four or more goals in a single European Cup campaign; three of Craig’s four goals came against Luxembourgish outfit Jeunesse Esch, the other when then Austrian champions Wacker Innsbruck visited Glasgow.

Some seriously talented strikers have reached three goals in the intervening years, as the table below documents.

Of course, Adam Idah could join his teammate on four goals, albeit next Tuesday’s trip to the Allianz Arena appears likely to be his last chance to do so.

However, another former Celtic centre-forward, who played a starring role in the historic Champions League campaign of 2012/13, has been in the news this week, after making a rather unusual career choice.

Celtic's 'best striker' after Larsson

On Thursday evening, Isthmian League North Division club Maldon & Tiptree announced the signing of Gary Hooper.

Nicknamed the Jammers, they ply their trade in England’s eighth tier, but have just been the subject of a ‘multi-million pound’ takeover by Barrie and Scott Drewitt-Barlow.

Former Manchester City and West Ham midfielder Kevin Horlock, who’s just been appointed manager, says the club’s aim is to get into the Football League, a feat they would require four promotions to achieve.

Where Are They Now

Well, the new owners are certainly spending big to achieve this objective, first signing goalkeeper Elliot Justham from National League side Dagenham & Redbridge on Wednesday, but Hooper is certainly the biggest name addition they’ve made so far.

Maldon & Tiptree, who are currently 15th in the table, visit Cambridge City at their brand-new stadium in Sawston on Saturday, so it’ll be interesting to see if Hooper debuts.

During his time at Celtic, Hooper was, as Phil Gordon of the Times puts it, absolutely ‘clinical’, described by then manager Neil Lennon as the club’s “best striker [here] since Henrik Larsson”, and his numbers are certainly comparable to the very best.

As the table shows, Hooper’s numbers at Celtic are on par with all the best strikers who’ve come since, boasting a better minutes-per-goal ratio than both Odsonne Édouard and Maeda, scoring only three fewer goals than Kyōgo Furuhashi in 27 fewer games.

The Englishman’s contribution to the 2012 Champions League campaign, scoring home and away during victories over Spartak Moskva, as the Hoops reached the round of 16, will never be forgotten.

This form earned Hooper a move to Norwich for £5m, but he didn’t live up to expectations in Norfolk, and his career has never really recovered.

He was then moved to Sheffield Wednesday, and since departing the Owls in 2019, he has represented Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand, Kerala Blasters in India, Omonia in Cyprus and Gulf United of the UAE, before returning to England, first with Barnet, then at Kettering Town and now Maldon & Tiptree, who he previously played for as a teenager.

Celtic, Maeda, Hooper

Just a few weeks on from his 37th birthday, will Hooper still have his goal-scoring instincts at Isthmian League North Division level?

Vince and Billings return to ODI squad for England's tour of Australia

James Vince and Sam Billings have won recalls to England’s ODI squad for a three-match series in Australia, which takes place immediately after the men’s T20 World Cup.As revealed by ESPNcricinfo earlier, Jason Roy will make his return to international cricket after a lean English summer led to him losing his spot in the T20I side and his ECB central contract, while there is no place for Alex Hales who is now seen as a T20 specialist.

Fixtures

November 17 – 1st ODI, Adelaide
November 19 – 2nd ODI, Sydney
November 22 – 3rd ODI, Melbourne

Neither Vince nor Billings has played an ODI since July 2021, but both have impressed in their recent 50-over opportunities. Vince’s last ODI innings brought his first England hundred to complete a clean sweep over Pakistan, while Billings has been unfortunate to miss out on recent selection after averaging 56.00 in his eight ODI innings since 2020.Olly Stone also won a recall, having last played an ODI in October 2018, and will fly out to Australia along with Billings, Vince and Roy in the coming weeks. Chris Jordan will stay with the set-up after the World Cup and will come into contention to win his first ODI cap since February 2020.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Luke Wood is the only uncapped player in the squad. He went on the tour to the Netherlands in June but did not play, and is due to travel to Australia this week as a reserve after Tymal Mills replaced Reece Topley in the full squad for the World Cup.Dawid Malan, Wood’s team-mate in the Hundred, has been recalled after being left out of England’s home ODIs this summer. Liam Dawson, a regular feature in England squads because of his versatility, could win only his fourth ODI cap and his first since 2018.The series, which does not form part of the World Cup Super League, will stretch England’s player pool considerably. By November 17, the day of the first ODI in Adelaide, the squad for their Tests in Pakistan in December will be in Abu Dhabi, along with a 15-man Lions training group and three fast bowlers who are recovering from long-term injuries. As a result, several leading white-ball players are not involved in the ODI series. Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone and Mark Wood will travel to the UAE straight after the World Cup – along with Ben Stokes, who has retired from the ODI format – while Ben Duckett, Will Jacks and Joe Root were not considered for selection because of their involvement in the Test squad.

Liam Patterson-White deepens Durham's despondency

Strong all-round show from Liam Trevaskis is to no avail after points deduction

ECB Reporters Network14-Aug-2022England Lions spinner Liam Patterson-White sparkled with five for 45 as Notts Outlaws bounced back from consecutive defeats to keep their Royal London Cup campaign alive as Durham slumped to a fourth Group A defeat. The left-arm spinner was representing the Lions against South Africa as the Outlaws suffered losses against Gloucestershire and Middlesex after opening their campaign with two wins and showed how much he had been missed as Durham were bowled out for 226, Liam Trevaskis making 59 not out.Matt Montgomery top-scored with 54 as the Outlaws prevailed in a tight finish to win by two wickets with two overs to spare, Trevaskis’ tight spell with the ball going unrewarded. With the two points they had acquired for their solitary win cancelled out by a two-point disciplinary penalty issued on Saturday, Durham have no points from five matches.”The disciplinary penalty is disheartening, although I believe the club are appealing it,” said their skipper Scott Borthwick. “We’ve got such a young squad at the moment, we’ve got to keep learning, but the senior players in the team have to put their hands up and take some responsibility.”Related

Patterson-White made a rapid impact by dismissing Australian former Test batter Nic Maddinson in his second over to end a 68-run second-wicket partnership with Scott Borthwick. He took his next four wickets in the space of 19 balls between the 20th over and the 26th as Durham slipped from 72 for two to 135 for six, the last two coming from consecutive deliveries before debutant Mitch Killeen – son of former Durham stalwart Neil Killeen – survived the hat-trick ball.Choosing to bat first on the same pitch that saw 683 runs scored as Middlesex won here on Friday, Durham were a wicket down after four balls as Graham Clark nicked to first slip before the two left-handers, Maddinson and Borthwick, built a decent recovery, the Australian setting the pace with seven boundaries. But when Patterson-White relieved Zak Chappell as first change at the pavilion end, he removed Maddinson with his 11th ball, pinning him leg before with one that looked to keep a shade low.Just as Maddinson failed to progress beyond 37, Borthwick fell on 36, lbw as Patterson-White spun one back into his pads, and Sean Dickson became a third leg before victim for the left-armer as he went to slog-sweep. Paul Coughlin edged to slip for 17 and when 19-year-old wicketkeeper Tomas Mackintosh fell first ball, also leg before, Durham were 135 for six.Killeen helped Trevaskis add 42 in nine overs before he clipped Matt Montgomery’s off-spin straight to midwicket, after which play was held up while a male spectator was treated by medics after a George Drissell six struck him on the head. Thankfully, his injuries were minor. After Chappell had seen off the Durham tail for figures of three for 51, opener Ben Slater was bowled by a beauty from Chris Rushworth as Notts began their reply.Sol Budinger’s aggressive instincts took him to 35 off 25 balls, with two of his three sixes going out of the ground, before he miscued Oliver Gibson to be caught at midwicket.Dane Schadendorf was bowled as Trevaskis came on to bowl his left-arm spin, going down the pitch somewhat recklessly, and though Haseeb Hameed looked in the mood to continue where he left off after Friday’s century against Middlesex he soon departed, caught low down at extra cover as Trevaskis make further inroads.Lyndon James joined Montgomery to steer a careful path as Durham sought to turn the screw and at the halfway stage the Outlaws required another 95, still four down. The loss of James for 35 at 150 for five, Rushworth trapping the all-rounder on the crease to end a stand worth 74, kept Durham interested and after Trevaskis had finished three for 35 from 10 overs, Killeen struck with his second ball in senior cricket to bowl Patterson-White and keep the outcome in the balance with 64 still needed. However, with big-hitting 18-year-old Fateh Singh finding the boundary as easily as he had in his cameo 45 off 22 balls on Friday, the next wicket added 35 in five overs and though Montgomery fell for 54 reverse sweeping Drissell’s off-spin, the target was down to 29 off 61 balls.Another twist came with Singh’s dismissal for 25, brilliantly caught at short mid-wicket by Dickson with 21 still needed and eight down, but Chappell and Brett Hutton were able to finish the job.

هدية لـ مانشستر سيتي.. نيوكاسل يكتفي بنقطة أمام برايتون في الدوري الإنجليزي

Alongside Kamara: Emery must now boldly axe £120k-p/w Aston Villa ace

Aston Villa stumbled to a disappointing 3-0 loss to Newcastle United on Boxing Day after a dubious red card decision meant Unai Emery’s side had to play nearly an hour with ten men.

Jhon Duran will now be suspended for this Premier League clash with Brighton and Hove Albion back at Villa Park to see out 2024, therefore, as the Spaniard attempts to put together an XI that can immediately bounce back.

Away from some obvious alterations – with Matty Cash also suspended for this tie with the Seagulls owing to too many yellow cards – Emery could also be preparing to drop Boubacar Kamara for Villa’s final home contest of the year.

Kamara's performance vs Newcastle

All in all, not many players from a Villa perspective could walk off at the end of the sobering 3-0 defeat with their heads held high, with Kamara being one that would have felt he could have offered a lot more on another day.

Emery would hook him off with about 20 minutes left to play having been largely underwhelmed by the Frenchman’s efforts, after seeing him bravely battle all afternoon long against Manchester City before this timid showing on Tyneside.

In truth, Eddie Howe’s hosts bullied Kamara and Co in the middle of the park throughout the one-sided game, as Joelinton ended up helping himself to a goal and an assist whilst the likes of Youri Tielemans visibly struggled alongside the quiet Villa number 44.

Only registering 35 touches of the ball compared to Sandro Tonali’s mammoth 90, this contest with Fabian Hurzeler’s Brighton could give Emery the perfect chance to gift Kamara a rest after he was way off the pace of the game at St James’ Park, especially as the 25-year-old is also only recently back from a long-term injury.

Boubacar Kamara

Kamara might not be the only change to come in the midfield ranks, however, as Emery must be contemplating dropping this first team regular for the game later on.

McGinn's performance vs Newcastle

Dropping out of the main XI twice this season already in the Premier League, it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for the ex-Arsenal boss to drop John McGinn for the test of Brighton tonight.

After all, the £120k-per-week Villa captain was very passive in the heavy defeat to the Toon, with just 23 touches coming his way among other underwhelming numbers.

Away from very rarely getting on the ball, the Scotsman would only register 11 accurate passes when he was played into the contest, alongside failing to muster up a single accurate cross or dribble as his side fell to a humbling loss on their travels.

Often shining bright for his side as a tireless presence who is more than capable of chipping in with a goal or assist, McGinn will hope this was just an off-day from his point of view, on the way to returning to his best as games come thick and fast heading into 2025.

But, regardless of Emery also labelling McGinn as “amazing” in the past, nobody’s spot in the team will be certain after the harrowing away trip to Newcastle, with the experienced 30-year-old potentially having to make do with a spot on the substitutes bench.

That would open up an opportunity for Leon Bailey or Jaden Philogene-Bidace to start instead, with Bailey one face that is eager to get his stuttering Villans career back up and running.

Emery will just pray that whatever alterations are made his side can get back to winning ways on their own turf after a severe reality check was handed to them on Tyneside.

Ben Duckett falls five runs shy of second straight ton as Nottinghamshire’s lead looks fragile

Glamorgan will enter the final day of their LV= Insurance County Championship match against Nottinghamshire feeling that they are in a strong position to complete their first victory in a red-ball match at Trent Bridge since 1998.Building on a lead of 77 on first innings, in which Timm van der Gugten’s 62 helped the last two wickets add 131 runs, they had Nottinghamshire 224 for for 8 at the close, the Netherlands international seam bowler having also starred with the ball by taking four wickets for 51.All four came after tea, starting with that of key man Ben Duckett, who fell five runs short of posting a second century in the match. No other Nottinghamshire batsman has made more than 30 and a lead of 147 looks a fragile one.Nottinghamshire, pre-season favourites to win promotion from Division Two, pulled off an improbable win over Sussex at Hove last week. Another would seem unlikely, although ninth-wicket pair Brett Hutton and Joey Evison – batting with a runner because of a sore toe – added 37 in the last 14 overs and a few more on the final morning could still set up an intriguing finish.Related

Having let a good position slip on Friday, Nottinghamshire needed another seven overs on the third morning to take the last Glamorgan wicket, van der Gugten’s measured contribution with the bat ending when he miscued Liam Patterson-White’s left-arm spin and was caught at long-off.Michael Hogan, 19 not out, then demonstrated that his prowess with the ball does not wane even in his 41st year by removing both Nottinghamshire openers without scoring. He surprised Haseeb Hameed in his second over with a ball that climbed and looped to gully off the shoulder of the bat and, in his next over, banged another in short that Ben Slater went to pull but could only glove through to the wicketkeeper.Duckett and Joe Clarke were briefly on top as Nottinghamshire recovered from two down for one run to 45 for 2 at lunch. But Hogan and van der Gugten were able to dry up the runs immediately after lunch and Michael Neser returned to have Clarke caught behind, pushing at one that found a thin edge.Having survived a half-chance to midwicket on 32, Duckett went on the attack, going to his half-century with a lovely shot through the offside for four off Neser, following up with three legside boundaries against Andrew Salter’s off-spin.He lost another partner as skipper Steven Mullaney fell to a dab outside off stump that lacked conviction and turned into another catch for Chris Cooke.By tea, Duckett had moved into the 90s, but with Nottinghamshire still only 81 in front, Glamorgan knew that his early removal in the third session could be decisive. In the event, it came only four overs in, as the left-hander, with rare indecisiveness, pushed tentatively at a ball from van der Gugten only for it to leave him just enough to take the edge. David Lloyd took the catch at slip.Van der Gugten, finding some swing with the old ball, claimed his second wicket as Liam Patterson-White was adjudged leg before seeking to work one off his pads, a third as Sam Northeast dived full length to his left to snare Moores at second slip and a fourth as Northeast held one just over the ground to remove James Pattinson. But Hutton and Evison could yet turn the target into a tricky one, although there is a question mark over whether Evison will be able to bowl.
