Mickey Arthur: ‘We’ve got an attack that’s pretty balanced and we’ve got guys that are sort of specialists in all areas’•Cricket Australia

Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur has defended the selection of three left-arm fast bowlers in the attack for the first Test at the Gabba, where Australia piled on 429 in the first innings. Mohammad Amair, Rahat Ali and Wahab Riaz made up the Pakistan pace attack for the Test, while the other fast bowlers in the touring squad, Imran Khan and Sohail Khan, were overlooked.”We’ve got an attack that’s pretty balanced and we’ve got guys that are sort of specialists in all areas,” Arthur said on ABC radio on Saturday morning. “Like we’ve got Imran Khan sitting off who bowls well with wickets with a lot of grass on. I wouldn’t be speaking out of line if I said I don’t think he has got the pace to bowl on a good wicket here. But when it does a little bit he’s fantastic.”Sohail Khan comes in and swings it right arm, but I’ve got a doubt about Sohail’s comebackability. If he has got to bowl, his first spell’s very good, his second spell’s okay, his third spell is tough and then you just don’t get anything more. That puts a lot of pressure on our other units.”I think we picked our three best bowlers. I think we’ve always got to pick your three best bowlers. I’d be lying if I said we didn’t have a look at the Australian side, seven left-handers in their XI, if we get it to swing it’s left-arm to left-arm.”However, Pakistan’s bowling was far from their major problem on the first two days in Brisbane, where their batting order collapsed to be 8 for 67 before Sarfraz Ahmed led a minor recovery. Among those out cheaply were captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who was caught at slip for 4, and veteran Younis Khan, who edged behind first ball.Younis has endured a lean patch with his last six Test innings reading 0, 2, 1, 2, 11 and 0, although he scored 218 against England at The Oval this year and a century in his next Test against West Indies in Abu Dhabi. Misbah also made a hundred on the England Test tour and, Arthur said, despite the age of the elder statesmen in the batting order, he was confident they still had something to offer.”I’ve seen Misbah do it time and time again,” Arthur said. “And Younis Khan is just a complete professional, he really is. I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a little doubt in my mind. But I had that doubt in England and I saw Younis come out and play exceptionally well, albeit against a different attack. So I’m backing him in for the time being.”Pakistan’s batsmen struggled to get through the difficult period under lights on the second day in Brisbane, where Australia’s fast men used the pink ball and the movement in the air to great effect. Asked on radio by former Australia opening batsman Chris Rogers whether there were day-night Test cricket led to problems due to the imbalance of conditions, Arthur agreed.”I think there are. I would agree and you can appreciate, being an opening batsmen, it’s not an even playing field,” Arthur said. “You walk out at 1 o’clock in glorious conditions like this, it’s a totally different ball game than opening up at 6 o’clock or 6.30 or whenever they go out. So there are still issues around it, I think, definitely.”I think it’s the future. If you’re playing just one a summer, you’ve got to do it. Funny enough in Dubai it didn’t do anything. I was surprised when that they had it at the Gabba, because the Gabba was the one where the conditions might be extreme. In Adelaide it seems to be good, although the ball does goes round. It is the future, I agree with you though I don’t think the playing fields are even.”

Jadeja fined 50% of match fees

Ravindra Jadeja ran down the danger area repeatedly leading to the umpires awarding five penalty runs to New Zealand•BCCI

Ravindra Jadeja was penalised 50% of his match fees by the ICC for “causing avoidable damage to the pitch during an international match.”While making 17 off 27 balls in the Indore Test, he was pulled up by umpire Bruce Oxenford for running down the middle of the pitch repeatedly which led to New Zealand being awarded five penalty runs. The ICC release said “Jadeja, after previously receiving two informal and one official warnings, infringed the protected area for the fourth time and damaged it.” As per a revision of the code of conduct, Jadeja has also been slapped with three demerit points. If he receives one more demerit point, within a two-year time frame, he could be suspended from one Test, or two ODIs, or two T20Is, whichever comes first. This is not the first time Jadeja has been in such trouble in this series. In Kolkata, he was warned twice for cutting across the pitch and the danger area when appealing for a wicket. The umpires don’t need to attach motive to the transgressions of players, they are there to penalise the actions, but for a Test player to run on the middle of pitch even after being warned has rung the alarm bells for New Zealand.Their coach, Mike Hesson, said only a few words but he got the message across. “Surface is still pretty good, I think it’s fair to say footmarks are building as they tend to do, but the body of the surface is still very good. I’m sure the umpires will maintain that.”If a bowler encroaches upon the danger area, he is taken out of the attack for the rest of the innings after due warnings. However, a similar transgression from a batsman costs the team only five runs. In terms of keeping an ongoing match even – and since suspensions affect a totally different match – it is perhaps one of the anomalies of the cricket rules that might need revisiting. When asked about the discrepancy, Hesson said: “In countries where the wickets deteriorate like this, the umpires have to be very decisive around how they look after the middle of the wicket. There are rules in place and the need to stick to those.”For a little while, Indian pitches have come under scrutiny. They have contributed to a change from the old ways when big hundreds and totals above 500 were routine. Virender Sehwag, who used to score a lot of the former, and play a part in the latter, told the host broadcaster before the second day’s play that he used to make his runs on surfaces that began breaking up late in the third day whereas now they are so worn they offer turn from ball one.Perhaps these pitches were a response to improving bats, a more cavalier attitude of the batsmen towards spin and to teams knowing Indian conditions better than they used to. Or maybe it was just the desperation to win.Whatever may be the case, the pitch in Indore didn’t turn from ball one. Yet the footmarks can be seen and there were puffs of dust by the end of day two. New Zealand, who are trailing by 529 runs, might have to get as much as possible in their first innings because batting last might become an ordeal. They were given five bonus runs, though, even before they had walked out to bat. This has been a series played in tough conditions, but it has largely been carried out in good spirit. That doesn’t mean teams won’t look to take any advantage they can get. Hesson had earlier acknowledged that India managed to get reverse swing soon after getting the ball changed, and that that was something they had tried to do as well. Appealing has been a bit of an issue, but Ross Taylor laughed it off saying his side was always going to be out-appealed in India. As India push for a whitewash having put the runs on the board, they will look for every advantage staying within the limits of the laws. The onus will be on the umpires to enforce those laws and playing conditions.

Leeds Aiming To Keep Hold Of £4,400-A-Week Defender

Leeds United want to keep hold of Cody Drameh this summer, amid interest from Burnley and Luton Town, according to a fresh update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

How has Drameh fared this season?

The 21-year-old was loaned out to Luton Town last summer, with the Whites unable to promise him regular playing time in the Premier League, and therefore thinking a temporary move was better for his development.

Drameh ended up enjoying a memorable season down south, starting 19 matches in the Championship and helping Luton achieve promotion to the top flight.

The £4,400-a-week full-back is out of contract at Leeds in 2024, meaning this summer is a key one in terms of his future, considering they risk losing him on a free transfer next year if he doesn't sign an extension. There is interest in his signature ahead of the transfer window opening, so the club have a key decision to make.

Will Drameh stay at Leeds this summer?

Taking to Twitter, Romano gave an update on Drameh's future, claiming that Leeds are still hopeful of retaining his services moving forward, however, gee said that both Burnley and Luton are prepared to open talks for his services.

"Burnley and Luton are prepared to open talks over the permanent transfer of Cody Drameh in the coming days. Leeds have yet to appoint new head coach as they still hope to convince Drameh to stay and get promoted next season."

This is a tricky decision for Leeds, with Drameh a talented young player who could potentially have a bright future in the game, having been hailed as "fantastic" by Luton manager Rob Edwards.

That being said, reports suggested that he wanted to quit Yorkshire to play in the Premier League next season, although recent speculation has said he could be open to staying in Yorkshire.

At 21, time is very much on Drameh's side, so in an ideal world, he would be content with staying put and looking to help Leeds back into the top flight at the first time of asking, aiming to add to his tally of eight appearances for the club.

His performances in helping Luton reach the Premier League certainly show that he can shine in the second tier – he averaged 3.3 tackles per game in the Championship in 2022/23 – although the fact that Burnley and the Hatters want him in the top flight could certainly sway his thinking.

Liverpool Blow As They Exit Race For £52m Transfer Target

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Liverpool are not currently in the race to sign Manuel Ugarte this summer.

What is the latest Liverpool transfer news?

As evidenced by the upcoming departures of Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, it's well-known that the Reds are looking to sign some new midfielders this summer.

And Ugarte of Sporting CP has been one name linked in recent times. For example, according to a report from Le Parisien (via Sport Witness), Liverpool are prepared to trigger the player's €60 million (£52m) release clause at the end of the season.

However, while talking about this significant claim on his YouTube channel, Romano has stated something contrary to those reports.

Indeed, the journalist has stated that only Chelsea and PSG are currently close to getting a deal done with Jurgen Klopp's men not in contention right now.

He explained (5:11): "Jorge Mendes, it's him on this deal for Manuel Ugarte. The discussions are taking place.

"The player's position will be crucial. So Ugarte has got to make a decision between Premier League or PSG. Let's see how it will evolve.

"Liverpool are not in the race in this moment. It is Chelsea and PSG. It's up to the player. It's also up to Sporting to decide the best proposal for them, and also to see if some players could be included in the deal – to help reach an agreement.

"For example, Chelsea have many players to offload. Same for PSG. This is something that could be discussed with Sporting in the next days and weeks."

Who wants to sign Ugarte?

This will certainly come as a blow for Liverpool as they may be close to signing Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton but they probably need more than one new player to come in with Keita, Milner and Oxlade-Chamberlain leaving.

What's more, Ugarte could have been a top signing for the Reds, having been described by journalist Jacque Talbot in his article for Sporting Life as a "mentality monster with great guile and physical attributes", while also being tipped as a long-term replacement for Fabinho in the middle of the park at Anfield.

With that in mind, it's no shock that other clubs are chasing the 22-year-old player. And it sounds as though PSG and Chelsea are both further along with this deal, which does suggest that Liverpool perhaps have their eyes on alternative targets.

It'll certainly be interesting to see who else they target if they do sign Mac Allister but Ugarte heads elsewhere.

Newcastle: Predicted XI, Team & Injury News vs Leeds

Newcastle United return to action in the Premier League this afternoon as they travel away from home to face Leeds United at Elland Road.

The Magpies have the opportunity to increase their lead over fifth-placed Liverpool to six points with a win over the Whites, which would place them in a healthy position to secure Champions League football heading into the final three matches.

Eddie Howe's men were dealt a setback in their last outing in the division, though, as they were beaten 2-0 by Mikel Arteta's Arsenal side at St. James' Park, thanks to a strike from Martin Odegaard and an own goal from Fabian Schar.

How will Newcastle line up against Leeds?

The Toon head coach could make three changes to the starting XI that lined up against the Gunners, with one in midfield and two in attack.

Nick Pope could keep his place between the sticks and the back four may also remain the same, with Kieran Trippier, Schar, Sven Botman, and Dan Burn tasked with keeping the ball away from the ex-Burnley titan's net.

However, Howe could alter his midfield by binning Joelinton in favour of academy graduate Elliot Anderson. The Brazilian has enjoyed an exceptional season, scoring six times in 28 Premier League starts, but struggled against Arsenal as he lost eight of his 13 duels and created one chance whilst being tackled three times out of four dribble attempts – as per Sofascore.

Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton.

Anderson, meanwhile, won 100% (3/3) of his duels, completed 100% (2/2) of his dribbles, and created one chance in nine minutes of action off the bench, as per Sofascore. His impressive cameo could have been enough to convince the coach to bring him into the XI today.

On the wings, Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron could come in for Callum Wilson and Jacob Murphy, with Alexander Isak moving into a central role.

Newcastle's "unplayable" French forward – as he was dubbed by Chelsea boss Frank Lampard – has two assists in his last two starts and could provide creativity to break Leeds down on the left flank.

Almiron, who has scored 11 goals in 25 starts in the Premier League this term, could also replace Murphy as Howe looks to keep the competition fierce and healthy in the forward areas.

The Paraguay international has proven himself to be a reliable goalscorer this season, and along with the £16m wizard's creative presence out wide, could provide him with the opportunities he needs to punish the opposition.

Predicted Magpies XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn; Anderson, Guimaraes, Willock; Almiron, Isak, Saint-Maximin.

Henry, Leach skittle Leicestershire for 43

The deteriorating pitch played its part, but the Leicestershire batsmen did not help themselves in being bowled out for 43 in their second innings in 25 overs on the third day against Worcestershire at Grace Road

ScorecardJoe Leach completed a memorable match as he helped run through Leicestershire•Getty ImagesThe deteriorating pitch played its part, but the Leicestershire batsmen did not help themselves in being bowled out for 43 in their second innings in 25 overs on the third day against Worcestershire at Grace Road. It left the visitors just 86 to win, a target they reached for the loss of three wickets.Leicestershire’s previous lowest score against Worcestershire was 52, made in 1965. The total is the lowest made in the Championship since Lancashire bowled Essex out for 20 at Chelmsford in 2013.There was little indication of the mayhem to come when Leicestershire picked up the two first innings wickets remaining to Worcestershire overnight, Jack Shantry caught at first slip and last man Charlie Morris run out in his eagerness to get Matt Henry his half-century.Thereafter, however, it was chaos. Henry struck in his first over, Paul Horton edging an outswinger low to third slip, but while Neil Dexter could do little about a Joe Leach delivery that rose and took the shoulder of the bat before flying straight to point, skipper Mark Cosgrove was playing a disappointingly airy drive to the Henry inswinger which disturbed the left-hander’s off-stump.With the score 11 for 3, Mark Pettini then decided the time was right to risk a quick single to a misfield and paid the price, Ross Whiteley throwing down the stumps from wide gully. The Leach delivery which pinned Angus Robson on the back foot both seamed back and kept low, before, astonishingly, another risky single saw Aadil Ali run out by a Brett D’Oliveira throw which took out middle stump.Wells went the same way as Robson, though his foot movement was minimal, and Ben Raine then fenced at an ordinary delivery from Henry and edged to the wicketkeeper.Niall O’Brien reached 17 before edging Leach to Whiteley at third slip, while Henry produced another fine delivery to bowl McKay. Having taken 5 for 99 in the first innings, Leach’s 4 for 10 gave him career-best match figures of 9 for 109.Leicestershire did pick up three wickets during Worcestershire’s chase, though once again the pitch could not be blamed for Daryl Mitchell dabbing at a wide delivery and edging McKay to O’Brien, or for Whiteley – promoted to hit out – dumping McKay to mid-on, but D’Oliveira could do little about the delivery from McKay that left him and took the edge on its way through to O’Brien.

Tottenham’s remaining fixtures and points prediction after Newcastle defeat

Tottenham Hotspur have been left with a mountain to climb in the race for the Premier League top four, and there is a growing possibility they do not qualify for any European competition next season.

With just six games to go this season, Tottenham are six points behind Manchester United, who occupy fourth place, having also played two extra games, meaning they would need to go on a near-perfect run to secure Champions League football.

Given the shocking 6-1 defeat against Newcastle United on Sunday, Spurs fans are unlikely to be feeling optimistic about the remainder of the campaign, but there is still plenty to play for. Here's how we expect their remaining games to finish:

Tottenham fixtures 27 April: Man United (h) 30 April: Liverpool (a) 6 May: Crystal Palace (h) 13 May: Aston Villa (a) 20 May: Brentford (h) 28 May: Leeds (a) Tottenham v Man United

nchester United managerEriktenHag

Cristian Stellini will be expecting a response from his side, after calling their performance in the opening 25 minutes against Newcastle "maybe the worst" he's ever seen, but they face tough opposition in Manchester United.

The Red Devils have been inconsistent this season, suffering a heavy 7-0 defeat at Anfield, while also crashing out of the Europa League against Sevilla after losing 3-0 away from home in the second leg. That said, Erik ten Hag's side have already won the EFL Cup, and they booked their place in the FA Cup final after beating Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.

United have won the last four competitive meetings between the two sides, and we expect them to come away as narrow winners on Thursday night.

Prediction: Tottenham 0-1 Man United

Liverpool v Tottenham

Premier League, Liverpool, Liverpool latest news, Liverpool update, Liverpool transfers, Liverpool transfer news, Liverpool analysis, Liverpool performance, LFC news, LFC latest news, LFC update, LFC transfers, LFC transfer news, LFC analysis, Jurgen Klopp, FSG, Anfield

After what is likely to be a tough test against Man United, the games do not get any easier for Stellini's side, as they face the difficult task of heading to Anfield to take on Liverpool.

The Reds are not enjoying the best of seasons, and it is unlikely they will be able to finish in the top four, but they have started to display signs of improvement in recent weeks, defeating Leeds United 6-1 away, following it up with a 3-2 victory at home to Nottingham Forest.

Spurs have not recorded a victory against Jurgen Klopp's side since October 2017, losing eight and drawing three of the last 11 meetings between the two sides, and there is no indication that record will change.

Prediction: Liverpool 3-0 Tottenham

Tottenham v Crystal Palace

harry-kane-tottenham-hotspur-newcastle-united-goal-record-premier-league

The Lilywhites will fancy their chances of picking up three points against a Crystal Palace side that were in danger of being relegated until recently, however it will not be easy by any means.

The Eagles are a much-improved side under the helm of Roy Hodgson, winning three and drawing one of their last four games to steer themselves well clear of the bottom three.

That said, Tottenham have largely been decent at home, even despite their poor recent form, winning five, drawing one, and losing one of their last seven games on their own patch, and they should be able to get over the line.

Prediction: Tottenham 2-1 Crystal Palace

Aston Villa v Tottenham

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery watches on from the sideline as his side beat Newcastle United.

There may be no worse time to be coming up against Aston Villa, as Unai Emery's side have won seven and drawn two of their last nine games.

The Villans have emerged as shock contenders for European football, currently sitting just two points behind Tottenham in the table, and if they keep playing at this level, it will be another very difficult task for Stellini's side.

Villa won the reverse fixture 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and it would not be a surprise if they recorded a victory by the same scoreline on their own patch.

Prediction: Aston Villa 2-0 Tottenham

Tottenham v Brentford

heung-min-son-tottenham-hotspur-academy-oliver-irow

Having been on a run of six games without a win at time of writing, Brentford are unlikely to have anything to play for near the end of May, meaning it is the perfect opportunity for Spurs to pick up three points.

In the reverse fixture on Boxing Day, the Lilywhites had to fight back from 2-0 down to pick up a 2-2 draw at the Gtech Community Stadium, so it will not be an easy match by any means.

However, the north London club have won their last two home matches against the Bees in routine fashion, and given the disparity between the two teams, a similar result should be expected.

Prediction Tottenham 3-1 Brentford

Leeds v Tottenham

javi-gracia-leeds-united-academy-charlie-allen-darko-gyabi

Tottenham's away form has been patchy all season, having acquired just 20 points from 16 games on their travels, last winning away in their trip to Fulham at the end of January, courtesy of a first-half Harry Kane strike.

Leeds have looked very poor as of late, particularly in their 6-1 drubbing against Liverpool earlier this month, but they could have it all to play for at this stage of the season, as they are currently embroiled in the relegation battle.

It is likely to be a spirited display from the Whites, and Elland Road will not be an easy place to go when so much could be resting on the game. As such, we think a draw is the most likely result.

Prediction: Leeds 1-1 Tottenham

Predicted run-in points: 7/21 Predicted total points: 60

PSG Interested In Chelsea Winger Ziyech

Paris Saint-Germain could make a fresh move for Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech in the summer transfer window, a new update has suggested.

Is Ziyech a key man at Chelsea?

The Moroccan has had a frustrating season at Stamford Bridge, struggling to consistently become a key player under both Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter. The 30-year-old has only actually started six Premier League games in total, with another seven appearances coming from the substitutes' bench, and just one start has come his way in the Champions League.

Back in January, it looked as though Ziyech could depart Chelsea, with PSG looking to strike a deal to sign him late in the window. In the end, however, the transfer failed to go through and the Morocco international remained in west London for the remainder of this season.

Given his lack of playing time, though, it looks as though a summer departure could be likely, even though his current Blues deal doesn't expire until 2025. A fresh update further suggests as much, with PSG seemingly refusing to go away quietly.

Hakim-Ziyech-Chelsea

Could winger be off to PSG?

According to Football Insider, the French giants are "set to rekindle their interest" in Ziyech this summer, as they look to acquire the services of a long-time target. Since the January move failed to come to fruition, PSG have "continued to monitor and stay in touch" with the Chelsea man and "they are on the lookout for cheaper deals", which is where he comes into play.

Todd Boehly is also thought to be looking to trim his squad once the summer arrives and Ziyech is someone who doesn't appear to be a key part of the club's plans moving forward. It's added that PSG are "preparing another bid" to sign the World Cup star.

There is no denying the 50-cap and 19-goal Morocco international's ability as a footballer – he has been described as "incredible" by his international manager, Walid Regragui – but moving him on at the end of this season does feel like the most logical decision by Chelsea.

He has become a bit-part player, flitting in and out of matches and failing to score in the league in 2022/23 to date, and he himself is surely keen on the prospect of a new challenge where he could be more of a regular starter.

Ultimately, Ziyech's time at Chelsea has been arguably adequate but little more, although there is still time for him to go out with a bang and help inspire the Blues to Champions League glory under Frank Lampard.

Liverpool Could Ditch £48m Dud For Teen Starlet

Arguably Liverpool's most promising factor to take from the entirety of what has been a forgettable season has been the emergence and subsequent exploits of 18-year-old academy graduate Stefan Bajcetic, who has been the shining light before injury cruelly ended his breakout year prematurely.

Liverpool have been submerged in brackish water this season, with the outfit yet to tread water in the comfort of the top-four, with fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur currently seven points ahead of the Reds, who, granted, have two games in hand.

The midfield department is one area that has received more scathing remarks than others, with a summer exodus forthcoming and a raft of fresh faces undoubtedly poised to arrive in a matter of months.

Indeed, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita will all depart when their deals expire in June, while loanee Arthur Melo will not have the option to make his deal permanent exercised after a shambolic year plagued by injury has left the one-time £64m man tasting 13 minutes of action all term.

With this in mind, Klopp would be wise to meld new arrivals with one or two figures from the youth ranks, and no academy member stands in better stead for an upgrade than prodigious central engine Bobby Clark.

Who is Bobby Clark?

Clark has been making waves on Merseyside since signing for the club from Newcastle United in 2021 as a talented winger, though he has found a home at the nucleus of the pitch more recently, to great effect.

This season, Clark has made 28 appearances at youth level, scoring two goals and registering four assists, hailed as "confident" by reporter Neil Jones.

The three-cap England U18 international was regarded in high esteem on Tyneside, with the Magpies still ruing his departure; speaking to the Liverpool Echo via the Blood Red Club Podcast, the Chronicle's lead Newcastle United journalist Lee Ryder discussed the situation.

He said: "Bobby was Newcastle's most promising youngster.

"He is a really exciting player with bags of skill and talent. He could have lit up the stage at St James' Park but now he has gone to Liverpool and that is a real kick in the teeth."

With the Guinean Keita freeing up a space in the squad at the culmination of the campaign, Clark might just be a tailor-made replacement, given his dynamic capabilities and progressive nature.

Naby Keita in Carabao Cup action for Liverpool vs Manchester City.

While not so prolific with the U21s, largely down to his deeper deployment, Clark was a devastating component at U18 level, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists from 27 matches.

Keita has missed an incredible 84 matches due to injury since his arrival at Liverpool, having had his £48m release clause met at RB Leipzig, and has been branded “woeful” by some.

With Keita leaving soon, Klopp must consider unleashing Clark once again this season, acclimatising him to life as a regular presence in the Liverpool first-team, replacing the unreliable and lacklustre Keita, who cannot be trusted to star as the outfit seek to salvage some positivity from their wayward campaign.

Keita's departure is a formality at this point, and while Liverpool will delve into the transfer market to secure the club's latest midfield star, Clark's ascension to the first-team fold could be imperative to cultivating a finely-poised balance to cement success at Anfield once again.

Kurt Zouma available to start after West Ham injury return

Insider ExWHUemployee has revealed that West Ham United defender Kurt Zouma is potentially in line to start this weekend in a positive injury boost for the club.

What’s the latest on Kurt Zouma’s West Ham injury problems?

The French centre-back has been plagued by fitness issues over the past month, as he had to have surgery due to long-term a knee problem in the winter.

And while he had seemed to have recovered from that, Zouma has since been in and out of the team due to a hamstring injury that saw him miss four league games in a row.

He did, however, returned to play 21 minutes off the bench in the 4-0 Premier League defeat to Brighton last weekend. what’s more, he managed to play the full 90 in the win over AEK Larnaca on Thursday.

In an update on The West Ham Way patreon, Ex revealed Zouma is “unscathed” after that start and is in line to potentially start today against Aston Villa.

He said: “Kurt Zouma came through the match against AEK Larnaca on Thursday unscathed following his recent injuries and will be looking to start his first Premier League game in a while.

“There is a dilemma of whether to keep the defence the same as the European game or whether Emerson, Ogbonna or Johnson could return.”

Could Zouma start for WHUFC?West Ham are in dire need of a win this weekend against Villa in the Premier League as they come into the game actually inside the bottom three.Seeing as the Hammers have won just one of the last nine league games in which Zouma didn’t feature in, it’s safe to say David Moyes could really do with him being involved today.Against AEK Larnaca, he impressed by keeping a clean sheet and picking up a 7.0 SofaScore rating while making eight clearances, one blocked shot, one interception, and winning three out of three aerial duels. If he can bring that form back to East London, perhaps the Irons will pick up a vital win in their pursuit of league safety.
