Their new Bale: Spurs working to sign £34m gem with "super high potential"

Tottenham Hotspur have been blessed with genuinely world-class talents over the years.

The North Londoners might not quite have the trophies to show for it, but the likes of Mousa Dembélé, Son Heung-min, Harry Kane and even Dele Alli all made names for themselves in N17 and became stars of the Premier League.

However, before that crop of players almost led the Lilywhites to domestic and continental glory, the club had another, arguably more talented star on their books: Gareth Bale.

The Welsh icon may have found glory while playing for Real Madrid, but he was just as unplayable during his time with Spurs, and while the club might not find another player exactly like him anytime soon, recent reports have touted a youngster with unmistakable similarities for a move this month.

Tottenham target Serie A ace

According to a recent report from GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham are one of several teams interested in signing Lecce star Patrick Dogu this month.

Spurs-Dorgu

In fact, the report has revealed that ‘influential figures behind the scenes’ at Spurs have been trying to work out how they can jump ahead of rivals Manchester United to secure the Dane’s services.

The good news is that Lecce have already agreed to sell the full-back this month should an appropriate offer come in, but the bad news is that the Serie A side value the Danish international at £34m.

It could prove to be a challenging transfer to get over the line, but given Dorgu’s impressive form and sky-high potential, it’s one worth fighting for, especially as there are shades of Bale about him.

How Dorgu compares to Bale

Okay, the first thing to say is that even if Dorgu ends up being a roaring success at Spurs, which seems possible, he’ll still be some way off reaching the sensational heights that Bale did in his final season before joining Real Madrid in 12/13, when he produced 36 goal involvements in 44 games.

However, just because it’s unlikely that the Dane will be able to reach quite the same world-class levels as the Welshman doesn’t mean that there aren’t a number of evident similarities between the pair, because there are.

The first is the simple fact that, like the former Galactico, the Lecce gem will be joining the North Londoners – should a deal be struck – as an incredibly exciting and attack-minded left-back with the ability to play further up the pitch.

For example, in his 56 games for the Serie A side, the “super high potential” Dane, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has made 23 appearances at left-back, 11 at right-wing, nine in left-midfield, five at left-wing and three at right-back, while the remaining five appearances were likely short cameos and therefore not attributed to a set position.

It’s not just this ability to play in attack and defence that makes the 20-year-old similar to the Cardiff-born icon; it’s also how he plays.

For example, according to Mattinson, the Copenhagen-born gem is an incredibly “dynamic” full-back who “loves to carry the ball up the field” and does so with such ease, in part thanks to the fact that his “dribbling is top drawer.”

However, while the offensive side of his game is what makes him most similar to the former Madrid star, he is no slouch when it comes to defensive duties, with Mattinson describing him as a “1v1 specialist” and someone who can “dominate his opponent physically.”

Finally, the 6 foot 2 prospect shares the former Spurs star’s incredible stamina, with Lecce sporting director Pantaleo Corvino describing him as having “an engine unmatched by anyone else.”

Overall, there are several apparent similarities between Dorgu and Bale, and these similarities are also what would make the youngster an ideal player for Posetcoglou, as he’d be able to play in multiple roles, he has explosive pace and, combined with his stamina, that could make him a nightmare for opponents in the Australian’s high-octane system.

Ultimately, it might require Daniel Levy and Co to invest more than they’d like to in a young player, but this looks like a transfer they must make.

Man City could sign their next Yaya Toure in "high-energy" £42m star

2025 is likely to be a year of big transition at Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side are currently sixth in the Premier League, despite back-to-back victories over Leicester and then West Ham, with the manager himself claiming his side are “at risk” of missing out on Champions League qualification.

Given that many of the Citizens’ most high-profile players, Kyle Walker, John Stones, İlkay Gündoğan, Mateo Kovačić, Bernardo Silva and, most notably, Kevin De Bruyne, are now in their 30s, the squad could be set to undergo and enormous overhaul.

Well, having actually made £126m profit in the transfer market last summer, thanks to the sales of Julián Álvarez (£81.5m), João Cancelo (£21m), Liam Delap (£20m) and Taylor Harwood-Bellis (£20m), the Sky Blues should have scope to spend big in 2025.

A second Éderson potentially on his way to Man City

Reports from Spain back in December claimed that Manchester have ‘made contact’ with Atalanta in their pursuit of midfielder Éderson. However, this week, Fabrizio Romano revealed to GIVEMESPORT, that “it’s very difficult to sign Ederson [moving] in January with a fee of over €50m (£42m) required to prise him away in the summer.

Further reports from Italy have noted that Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are also interested in his services, so Man City could find themselves in something of a bidding war.

So who is Éderson, and why is he so sought after?

Why Ederson would be a good signing for Manchester City

The 25-year-old bounced around a few Brazilian clubs, including Cruzeiro, Corinthians and Fortaleza, before moving to Serie A side Salernitana in January 2022, although he was only with I Granata for six months, because Atalanta quickly recognised his talents, signing him for €15m the following summer.

Atalanta midfielder Ederson

The midfielder has made 115 appearances for la Dea, a key figure as Gian Piero Gasperini’s side won last season’s Europa League, while I Nerazzurri are currently second in the Serie A table, seeking to win their first-ever Scudetto.

Gasperini himself stated that Éderson is “not just a midfielder; he’s the heartbeat of our system”, underlining his importance, while data analyst Ben Mattinson on Twitter added he is a “high-energy midfielder”.

Interesting comparisons have previously been made suggesting that Éderson is a bit like prime-Yaya Touré, adding the Brazilian “actually shows better ball recovery skills”, so let’s see how the duo compare.

Well, the first thing to note is that they’re both physical players. Indeed, The Athletic’s Alex Barker outlined that Éderson’s three best qualities are his “strong aerial win rate”, his “great reading of the game” and his “ability to cover large distances quickly”. That certainly sounds a bit like Yaya, notably the last bit.

As the table outlines, Éderson and what Touré became in his later years are stylistically quite different. After starting as a defensive midfielder, Touré ended his Man City career further forward so perhaps Pep could mould the Brazilian in a similar way here?

As noted by Barney Ronay of the Guardian, who calls him the most “intelligent and adaptable Premier League” player ever, the Ivorian played centre-back for Barcelona in a Champions League final, before transforming into a “goal-pylon stampede-machine” just three years later.

Josh Fordham of talkSPORT adds that Touré is amongst the “best midfielders in Premier League” history, so we’re certainly holding Éderson to a high standard, but he exceeds the Man City legend for tackles during the chosen time-frames and certainly has the attributes to star in the Citizens’ midfield in the future, as Touré did in the past.

New Torres & Gerrard inbound: Liverpool could sign world-class £150m star

Liverpool’s fanbase released a sigh of relief as Darwin Nunez headed to the corner of the Gtech Community Stadium, final whistle blown, to applaud the travelling faithful.

He’s fired an emphatic brace past Mark Flekken to hand Liverpool another three points to further consolidate their position at the top of the Premier League, especially so after Arsenal blew a two-goal lead to draw against Aston Villa later that evening.

Liverpool managerArneSlotbefore the match

Whether Arne Slot has full faith in the Uruguay international is up for question. Perhaps it isn’t, actually. Nunez has only started seven top-flight fixtures this term as his lack of potency continues.

With clubs supposedly keen on taking him off the Dutchman’s hands, might this be the final phase of a fan favourite’s career on Merseyside?

The latest on Darwin Nunez's future at Liverpool

Last week, it was reported that Liverpool had rejected a mammoth bid from a club in the Saudi Pro League for the transfer of Nunez.

The Athletic have since revealed that this is not the case, but eyes have been directed the 25-year-old’s way and there’s a sense that pieces could be moved on the board this summer.

It’s understood that any present interest in Liverpool’s club-record signing will be deflected until the end of the 2024/25 campaign, with Slot unwilling to lose a match-winning cog at the season’s midpoint. It is all, after all, on the line for the Anfield group.

However, Nunez’s double against Brentford hardly negates the months of fruitless toil that have wedged division between him and success, limiting him to a bit-part role.

Liverpool need a more reliable source, a Salah-esque source from the centre.

There is a name, you must whisper it quietly – but if it comes true, it would be the most incredible capture for an outfit heading back to the very top.

Liverpool chasing new centre-forward

Earlier this week, Football Transfers revealed that Liverpool are in the running for Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, who has been in inspired form this season.

The Sweden striker is attracting significant interest from Europe’s pre-eminent outfits, especially after Eddie Howe was coy on his long-term future last Autumn, with Isak supposedly hesitant to extend his stay at St. James’ Park.

Securing his prized signature would not be easy, however, with Arsenal desperate for a centre-forward too and Newcastle fielding enquiries worth more than £150m.

The bank would have to be broken, that’s for sure.

Imagine Alexander Isak at Liverpool

Isak would be the gold standard, to be sure. Described as an “absolute nightmare” for defenders by Premier League record goalscorer Alan Shearer, the £120k-per-week talent would add so much to the Liverpool frontline.

He’s like Nunez in terms of energy and tenacity but differs greatly in front of goal, ice-cold and deadly.

Liverpool have produced their fair share of elite goalscorers over the years, with Mohamed Salah and Luis Suarez as two modern options.

Before that though, there was Fernando Torres, adored by the Liverpool family and part of an iconic duo, the one and only Steven Gerrard being the other half.

Gerrard was the ultimate midfielder, so complete, so refined, so influential. Liverpool’s greatest-ever player (subjectively) played with many great forwards, but Torres probably takes the cake when considering how electric the pairing was together.

Gerrard once hailed Torres for his “world-class” ability, notching 101 goal contributions from 142 appearances as a Liverpool striker.

Gerrard was the creative custodian of El Nino’s goals, feeding them through with devastating precision. They operated in flux, all muscle memory and innate intuition. It’s something that Liverpool might never replicate again, such was the nature of the unique partnership.

However, Slot could give it a good go by bringing Isak into the fold, with the Swede’s style perfectly suited to the up-and-coming Harvey Elliott who dazzled in the Champions League just a few nights ago.

We’ve all met frustration regarding Elliott’s playing time this season – or lack thereof. An unfortunate injury shackled the England U21 star to the sidelines for the early knockings of the campaign, but he’s been fit and firing since November yet limited to a bit-part role.

Harvey Elliott celebrates for Liverpool

The youngster might not have the same roundedness as Gerrard but the little magician has confirmed that his esteemed countryman is his idol and that he attempts to model his game from the legend’s own.

While he’s been used sparingly this term, Elliott still has the world at his feet and makes waves each time Slot introduces him in the second half.

The level of his ability is non-negotiable at the debate table, with three goals and six assists across just 11 Premier League starts last season, as per Sofascore. You can see that he has a variegated approach to his attacking play that would allow for a give-and-take relationship with Isak, who enjoys the playmaking side of the number nine role himself.

Howe has described Isak as a “world-class” striker and it’s hard to argue against it. If Liverpool were to secure one of their most significant signings in history, he’d be sure to prosper for an age.

With a creative force like Elliott behind him, Liverpool might just have their next Gerrard-Torres duo under Slot’s wing. It would be something else.

Man Utd now offered £54m "monster" in swap deal; he’s keen on the move

Manchester United have now been offered the chance to sign an “absolute monster” in a swap deal, with the player believed to be keen on the move, according to a report.

Man Utd pursuing a striker

Man United are now pushing to bring in a new striker this month, with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen now on their list of targets, and there has recently been a positive update on their pursuit of the Nigerian, as he is said to be determined to move to Old Trafford.

FC Porto’s Samu Omorodion is also under consideration, having sent scouts to watch the striker in action against Boavista, and he is likely to have caught the eye, netting twice in a 4-0 victory to help continue his side’s title charge.

Just a few days ago, it emerged that United could look to make a move for Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic this month, with journalist Enrico Camelio explaining that a deal could be possible, should Joshua Zirkzee be sent in the opposite direction.

INEOS working on transfer for £75m star who wants Man Utd move this month

It would be some coup…

ByBarney Lane Jan 6, 2025

Now, the Red Devils have been handed the opportunity to make that deal a reality, with TEAMtalk reporting that Juventus have now made an official cash-plus-player offer.

There are signs that a deal could have a good chance of coming to fruition, too, as both players have given the green light to moving, with Zirkzee struggling to adapt to life in the Premier League since arriving from Bologna in the summer.

TEAMtalk relay a previous valuation of the Juventus striker from CaughtOffside, which suggests he could be worth €65m (£54m), with United required to pay a fee to bring the combined value of their player and the money to a suitable amount.

Vlahovic is an upgrade on Zirkzee

Members of the Italian media have lauded the Serbian as an “absolute monster”, and for good reason, given that his record in front of goal in the Serie A is very impressive, with his most prolific season coming in 2020-21 for Fiorentina, netting 21 times.

As shown, the Juventus star has a better eye for goal than the Dutchman, scoring more than double the number of non-penalty goals per 90 over the past year, but his all-round game isn’t as strong.

As such, if Ruben Amorim wants a proven goalscorer, who does not offer much else to the team, it is worth considering Juventus’ proposal of a swap deal, but Zirkzee is likely to help the team in different ways. Osimhen should be United’s priority target, given that his all-round game is a lot better than Vlahovic’s, while also averaging more non-penalty goals over the past year.

Although Zirkzee has failed to deliver so far, it seems a little premature to let him leave this winter, especially considering Vlahovic is not the best striker United are currently linked with, meaning there is no pressing need to accept a swap deal.

Arsenal could sign "one of Europe’s hottest prospects" to replace Saka

It just has not been Arsenal’s season this year.

Mikel Arteta’s side were handed a nightmare set of fixtures to kick off the Premier League campaign. Then, they had to deal with several suspensions, only for club captain Martin Odegaard to miss almost two months of football due to an injury picked up on international duty.

Once the Norwegian returned, the North Londoners looked back to their best, but back-to-back draws in the league against Fulham and Everton once again prevented the team from gaining any momentum.

Finally, to round it all off, the Gunners’ poster boy and undoubtedly most important player, Bukayo Saka, is now set to miss “many weeks” of action after suffering a hamstring injury against Crystal Palace on the weekend.

It would be fair to say that, at the moment, without their talismanic winger, Arsenal’s prospect of finally winning the title seems a million miles away.

However, the transfer window is set to open next month, and the club have already been linked with a player this year who could be the perfect solution to their current problem.

Arsenal's internal solutions

So, before we get to the player Arsenal could sign next month to solve the issue of Saka’s absence, it’s worth looking at the possible solutions within the squad, and for our money, two seem the most likely.

The first is what we saw following the Englishman’s substitution on Saturday: Gabriel Martinelli playing off the right.

The former Ituano gem hasn’t been at his best this season, but when playing off the opposite flank at Selhurst Park, he looked genuinely dangerous for the first time in a while and managed to put away the chance Gabriel Jesus missed in the second half.

However, as the 23-year-old is naturally right-footed, that could change how that side of the pitch operates, so another option Arteta could take is starting the left-footed Ethan Nwaneri there.

The 17-year-old is widely considered to be one of the most exciting prospects in the league at the moment, and while the manager would probably prefer to ease him into the side more carefully, this crisis could be the perfect opportunity for him to establish himself as an important player in the first team.

Moreover, while he has primarily played in midfield for the first team this season, he has some experience playing out wide from his time in the youth sides.

With all that said, neither of these options is ideal, so what the club could, and probably should, do instead is sign someone next month.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

More specifically, they should sign a star they’ve already been linked to.

The star Arsenal should sign

So, to get straight to the point, the player Arsenal should be looking to sign next month is Atalanta star Ademola Lookman.

The good news for fans is that the club have been consistently linked with the former Everton man since the summer.

However, it would likely be an expensive deal, as some reports suggest the Serie A side would demand around €70m for their man, which converts to about £58m.

Now, that is undoubtedly a lot of money to spend on a player in January, but based on his form for the Bergamo outfit over the last few years, it would be more than worth it.

For example, in just 45 appearances last season, the Nigerian international, whom former professional Nedum Onuoha dubbed “one of the hottest prospects in European football,” scored 17 goals – three of which came in the Europa League Final – and provided ten assists.

This season has been just as spectacular for the 27-year-old.

In just 20 appearances, he has already scored 12 goals and provided five assists, meaning he’s averaging a goal involvement every 1.17 games.

On top of being a lethal attacker, the Wandswaorth-born dynamo is also incredibly versatile.

Therefore, he could easily step into Saka’s role on the right while the Hale End icon is out injured and then provide competition for the entire frontline when he’s back.

Ultimately, while there is no perfect solution to losing your best player, signing Lookman next month would be about as close as Arsenal could get.

IPL 2022 mega auction: Mumbai Indians splurge on Tim David and 'non-playing' Jofra Archer

Punjab Kings break the bank for Liam Livingstone as teams plug holes on second day of the auction

Kumble: For a change, it was bowlers’ auction

Jofra Archer is not expected to be available for IPL 2022 as he recovers from surgery on his right elbow, but that did not stop Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians, as well as Sunrisers Hyderabad, briefly, from bidding frenetically for him on the second day of the mega auction in Bengaluru. Archer was finally sold to Mumbai for INR 8 crore (USD 1.06 million), not making him the most expensive buy of the day but certainly a surprise one.The most expensive player on the day, and the day’s first millionaire, was Liam Livingstone, who at INR 11.5 crore (USD 1.53 million) also became the most expensive overseas buy of the auction when Punjab Kings beat off bids from Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers to get their hands on the hard-hitting England batting allrounder. He was also, overall, the fourth-highest earner in the auction, behind Ishan Kishan, Deepak Chahar and Shreyas Iyer, in that order.ALSO READ: How the ten teams stack upMumbai, in fact, started the day slowly, barely getting involved in the first couple of hours, but when they did, they did so aggressively. After Archer, they went toe-to-toe with a desperate-looking Knight Riders to get hold of Tim David, and won the race at INR 8.25 crore (USD 1.1 million) from a base price of INR 40 lakh.”It [Mumbai] has been a franchise that was really close to my heart and I always wanted to play for them as long as I could have remembered watching IPL cricket,” Archer said in a message. “I’m so glad that I’ve finally got the opportunity to represent such an amazing franchise. I’m also going to get the chance to play with some of the biggest stars in the world so I’m really looking forward to starting a new chapter.”Some prominent players to go unsold

Suresh Raina, Eoin Morgan, Amit Mishra, Colin Munro, Shakib Al Hasan, Aaron Finch, Steven Smith, Moises Henriques, David Wiese, Kane Richardson, Martin Guptill, Andrew Tye, Piyush Chawla, Ishant Sharma, Marnus Labuschagne, Dawid Malan, Imran Tahir, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Adil Rashid

“Jofra is a player Mahela (Jayawardene, the head coach) gave his first professional debut to. So happy to have gotten them together,” Akash Ambani, the Mumbai owner, said on the official broadcast. “Although it is going to be in next year, but very happy to have a lethal combination. Tymal (Mills, who was also bought by the franchise) has been a lethal death bowler; Mahela coaches him in the Hundred and he has managed to stay injury-free.”Tim David is going to partner (Kieron) Pollard at No. 6. We have been tracking Tim and he has got success at RCB last year. Looking forward to seeing him and Pollard finishing innings for us.”Then, later, on to the final round, after the ten teams submitted their wishlists, with not much money left but some key slots left to fill. At least a couple of teams were still without a first-choice wicketkeeper.Titans started with a relatively big purse, and snapped up David Miller for INR 3 crore (USD 400,000), Wriddhiman Saha for INR 1.9 crore (USD 252,000) and Matthew Wade for INR 2.4 crore (USD 319,000) very quickly.Liam Livingstone was the biggest earner on the second day of the auction•Getty Images

Knight Riders, meanwhile, added Sam Billings as possibly their primary wicketkeeper for INR 2 crore (USD 265,000), while Chris Jordan went to Super Kings for INR 3.6 crore (USD 478,000).Some other prominent names also found teams late in the script, among them Lungi Ngidi and Tim Seifert (Capitals), Glenn Phillips and Fazalhaq Farooqi (Sunrisers), Mohammad Nabi, Umesh Yadav and Alex Hales (Knight Riders), Evin Lewis (Super Giants), Nathan Ellis (Kings) and Karun Nair and James Neesham (Royals).Earlier, Aiden Markram, the first name to go under the hammer on the second day, invited a cautious bidding battle between Kings and Sunrisers, with Mumbai entering the fray too, before Sunrisers took him home for INR 2.6 crore (USD 346,000). Ajinkya Rahane, a well-travelled player in the IPL who has also led the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant/s and Royals in the past, went to Knight Riders for his base price of INR 1 crore (USD 132,700).Among the other players to attract interest from more than one team, and therefore earn a big payday, were Odean Smith, Marco Jansen, Shivam Dube, Khaleel Ahmed, Chetan Sakariya, Romario Shepherd and Rovman Powell.Anil Kumble, the Kings’ head coach, was pleased with how the franchise – one of the more aggressive bidders – had gone at the auction. “To get some great players in the lineup like Rabada, (Jonny) Bairstow and Dhawan along with Mayank (Agarwal),” he said. “Young players like (Rahul) Chahar, (Harpreet) Brar, Arshdeep (Singh)… now Livingstone and Odean, really exciting talent, is really good. To get back Shahrukh (Khan) is wonderful. Obviously, we wanted to have a few more who played for us.”Smith, much-talked-about in recent times for his all-round skills in white-ball cricket, was a net bowler at Knight Riders last season. However, the team didn’t enter the race for Smith at all, but Kings, Super Giants, Sunrisers and Royals did, before Kings got him for INR 6 crore (USD 796,000). Jansen, with Mumbai last season, was taken away by Sunrisers for INR 4.2 crore (USD 557,000). Dube went to Super Kings for INR 4 crore (USD 531,000), while Khaleel was Capitals’ first buy of the day for INR 5.25 crore (USD 697,000), and Sakariya, one of the stories of the IPL in 2020, joined fellow left-arm quick Khaleel for INR 4.2 crore (USD 557,000).Mumbai Indians were slow movers on the second morning, but got cracking in the afternoon•BCCI

It was a memorable day for some of India’s 2022 Under-19 World Cup champions. Allrounder Raj Bawa, Player of the Match in the final against England, found a lot of interest. Sunrisers and Mumbai entered and left the race, leaving Kings to sign him for INR 2 crore (USD 265,430). Quick bowler Rajvardhan Hangargekar, meanwhile, went to Super Kings for INR 1.5 crore (USD 200,000). Their captain Yash Dhull went to Capitals for INR 50 lakh (USD 66,360) and Vicky Ostwal joined him there after being bought for INR 20 lakh (USD 26,000).Others to find teams in the pre-lunch session were Dominic Drakes, Jayant Yadav and Vijay Shankar (Titans), K Gowtham, Dushmantha Chameera, Shahbaz Nadeem and Manan Vohra (Super Giants), Jaydev Unadkat and Mayank Markande (Mumbai), Sandeep Sharma (Kings), Navdeep Saini (Royals) and Maheesh Theekshana (Super Kings).”See, we wanted someone like a Quinton (de Kock), because we wanted to free KL (Rahul) up from his keeping responsibilities. Sometimes, being a keeper, captain and opening batsman can be strenuous,” Gautam Gambhir, the Super Giants team mentor, said on the official broadcast. “Then we wanted (Marcus) Stoinis, a batting allrounder, and then we went for a bowling allrounder in Jason Holder to split between them.Jofra Archer was bought by Mumbai Indians even though he isn’t expected to play this season•Getty Images

“Then we took Manish Pandey. Deepak Hooda can chip in with a few overs. (K) Gowtham clearly from a perspective that Hooda is a batting allrounder, Gowtham is a bowling allrounder. And we are using only three-four stadiums, so wickets may turn later in the season. Plus we always wanted pace. Imagine if you have Mark Wood and Avesh Khan bowling at 140-145, that will always be a luxury.”Broadcaster Charu Sharma, who had stepped in for the indisposed Hugh Edmeades as the auctioneer on the opening day of the auction, continued to conduct the proceedings. Edmeades sent a video message, which was shown on the official broadcast, saying that he was “absolutely fine” but not in a position to “give a 100% performance” and had therefore chosen to stay away. Right at the end of the day, though, Edmeades returned to the rostrum to complete the job he had started. On the first day of the auction, almost all the teams – Kings the exception, but only just – bought at least one player for a price of INR 10 crore (USD 1.13 million) or more. Ishan Kishan, the old Mumbai hand, went back to the franchise for INR 15.25 crore (USD 2.03 million), making him the most expensive buy of the day. Super Kings splurged on Deepak Chahar, and Knight Riders on Shreyas Iyer, who could well become their new captain. Three overseas players earned similarly big bucks: Wanindu Hasaranga (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Lockie Ferguson (Gujarat Titans) and Nicholas Pooran (Sunrisers). Prasidh Krishna (Royals), Harshal Patel (Royal Challengers), Avesh Khan (Lucknow Super Giants) and Shardul Thakur (Delhi Capitals) also joined the big-leaguers.Every auction sees at least a few lesser-known players, uncapped at the international level, earn big too, and this time that list included Shahrukh Khan, who went to Kings for INR 9 crore (USD 1.2 million), Rahul Tripathi, bought by Sunrisers for INR 8.5 crore (USD 1.13 million), and Rahul Tewatia, who was picked up by Titans for INR 9 crore (USD 1.12 million).

Here, we have listed what we think are the 10 best FA Cup final goals of all time.

1 ByRoss Kilvington May 12, 2025 10 Didier Drogba v Manchester United (2007) Ivorian scores winner in first final at new Wembley

Didier Drogba’s extra-time strike against Manchester United in the 2007 FA Cup final was a sign of things to come for the Chelsea striker and his side in the FA Cup.

After 116 minutes without a goal at the new Wembley, the Ivorian took matters into his own hands, playing a neat one-two with Frank Lampard on the edge of United’s box before gently lobbing the ball over the onrushing Edwin van der Sar.

The goal, which was enough to clinch the trophy for the Blues, was the first of four FA Cup final goals Drogba scored for Chelsea, with the striker again finding the target in 2009, 2011 and 2012. On each of those occasions, Chelsea went on to win.

9 Alexis Sanchez v Aston Villa (2015) Sanchez scores stunner as Arsenal run riot

The 2015 FA Cup final between Arsenal and Aston Villa was a non-contest, with Arsene Wenger’s side running out 4-0 winners on the day thanks to goals from Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez, Per Mertesacker and Olivier Giroud.

Sanchez’s 50th-minute strike was the pick of the bunch. The Chilean hit a stunner from 30 yards out, the ball dipping and swerving Jabulani-style before crashing off the crossbar and into the net.

The victory was Arsenal’s 12th final win – ensuring their place as the most successful team in FA Cup history.

The 9 most successful teams in the FA Cup

The FA Cup has been won by some of the biggest teams in the country since its inception in the 19th century.

ByRoss Kilvington Oct 30, 2024 8 Ricky Villa v Man City (1981) Villa wins it for Spurs with solo stunner

Back in the days when FA Cup final replays still existed, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City played out a draw in the 1981 final.

In the replay, Spurs emerged as 3-2 victors, in no short part to Ricky Villa, who scored twice on the day, including a memorable winner in the 76th minute. 40 yards out from goal, the Argentine somehow found a way through despite being surrounded by several City defenders before slotting the ball under goalkeeper Joe Corrigan.

Think Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s famous goal for Ajax against NAC Breda, but with dreadful haircuts and a muddy pitch.

7 Jesse Lingard v Crystal Palace (2016) Lingard breaks Eagles hearts with extra-time volley

Some goals you see coming. Others, you don’t. Jesse Lingard’s game-winning goal for Manchester United against Crystal Palace in the 2016 FA Cup final was one of the latter.

With the scores tied at 1-1 in the 110th minute, Antonio Valencia swung a hopeful ball into the Palace area which was deflected away by defender Damien Delaney. Out of nowhere, Lingard ran onto the deflected ball and volleyed it straight into the top corner past a motionless Wayne Hennessey in the Palace net.

23 years old at the time, Lingard’s career at Old Trafford never really kicked on how many would have hoped after his FA Cup heroics, but he’ll still always be remembered fondly by the United faithful for the goal.

6 Roberto Di Matteo v Middlesbrough (1997) Di Matteo's record-breaking strike wins cup for Chelsea

At the time it was scored, Roberto Di Matteo’s strike against Middlesbrough in the 1997 FA Cup final was the fastest in the fixture’s 125-year history.

Just 42 seconds into the game, the Chelsea midfielder scored with a thunderous strike from 30 yards out, which clipped the underside of the crossbar on its way in. The goal proved to be the winner and saw the Blues lift the trophy for the first time since 1970.

Di Matteo’s record has since been broken on numerous occasions, most recently by Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan, who scored within 13 seconds of the 2023 final.

5 Stuart Pearce v Tottenham (1991) Captain Pearce smashes home bullet free-kick

Stuart Pearce is best remembered for his propensity for cutting opponents in half with crunching tackles rather than his goalscoring abilities, but he was more than capable of finding the net. In fact, he did so on 104 occasions during his career.

The best of those goals arguably came in a Nottingham Forest shirt in the 1991 FA Cup final against Tottenham, where he opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a bullet of a free-kick that almost broke the net.

Sadly for Pearce, Forest went on to lose the game 2-1, with an extra-time own-goal from Des Walker gifting Spurs the trophy.

The 9 greatest FA Cup upsets of all time

The FA Cup is famous for its giant-killing moments, but which are the greatest upsets in the competition’s history?

ByBarney Lane Oct 31, 2024 4 Santi Cazorla v Hull City (2014) Cazorla free-kick kickstarts Arsenal comeback

Just eight minutes into the 2014 FA Cup final, Arsenal, quite unbelievably, found themselves 2-0 down against Hull City thanks to early goals from defenders James Chester and Curtis Davies.

On 17 minutes, however, Santi Cazorla swept in a magnificent free-kick from almost 30 yards out, beating Hull’s Allan McGregor at his far post.

The goal sparked what is arguably the greatest FA Cup final comeback of all time, with the Gunners going on to win 3-2 courtesy of goals from Laurent Koscielny and Aaron Ramsey.

The top 10 FA Cup finals of all time – ranked

Some finals fail to live up to the billing, but sometimes the magic of the FA Cup shines through.

1 ByAlex Caple May 25, 2024 3 Ray Parlour & Freddie Ljungberg v Chelsea (2002) Two glorious strikes seal memorable win for Arsenal

Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Chelsea in the 2002 FA Cup final came courtesy of two beauties.

The first came from midfielder Ray Parlour, who in the 70th minute fired in a fine long-range strike past Blues keeper Carlo Cudicini.

The second came through Freddie Ljungberg. Ten minutes after Parlour’s opener, the Swedish winger embarked on a driving run through Chelsea’s defence, blitzing past William Gallas and leaving John Terry on the floor, before curling the ball beautifully into the side netting.

They are almost certainly the greatest pair of goals to win a cup final.

2 Youri Tielemans v Chelsea (2021) Tielemans scorcher secures Leicester's first FA Cup

Youri Tielemans has developed a reputation over the years for scoring screamers. One of the finest in his collection is his goal in the 2021 FA Cup final for Leicester City against Chelsea.

With 63 minutes on the clock, the Foxes midfielder found himself in open space near the centre circle. From there, he drove forward with a couple of touches before putting his laces through the ball, which found its way into the top corner of Kepa Arrizabalaga’s net.

The stunning strike was enough to win the match and hand Leicester their first FA Cup.

1 Steven Gerrard v West Ham (2006) Gerrard scores trademark screamer to complete Liverpool comeback

In big moments, big players step up to the plate, and that’s exactly what Steven Gerrard did in the 2006 FA Cup final.

Heading into the final moments of the game, Liverpool found themselves 3-2 down against West Ham United and were desperately searching for an equaliser. Gerrard provided it, drilling a superb half-volley into the bottom corner from around 35 yards out.

The Reds went on to win the match via a penalty shootout, lifting the FA Cup for a seventh time.
