Spurs could sign their very own Van Dijk with move for “dominant” £24m titan

Tottenham Hotspur shifted away from the old managerial strategy and appointed Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou in the summer, with the craggy-faced Australian engineering a welcome resurgence over the first months of the campaign.

It was the best of times down the N17, with the staunch Spurs faithful roaring in adulation as the players – energised by exciting summer signings James Maddison and Micky van de Ven – clicked into gear and launched an unlikely charge to the forefront of the Premier League table.

Ange Postecoglou.

The dog days appeared to have returned after this period of bliss, with injuries and suspensions ravaging the progress and leaving Tottenham engulfed in a five-match winless run, which was finally ended in emphatic fashion with a 4-1 home victory over Newcastle United.

But the fact that Postecoglou has been forced to contend with a startling lack of defensive cover has hindered the progress, and this has to be the top priority in January.

Tottenham transfer news – Illia Zabarnyi

According to the Mirror, Tottenham have identified Bournemouth centre-back Illia Zabarnyi as the perfect player to strengthen Postecoglou's side's defensive ranks in January.

It's understood that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was interested in signing the player in 2021 following his performances in his Ukrainian homeland with Dynamo Kiev, but the Cherries won the race and snapped him up for £24m in January 2023, when he ultimately felt the time was apt to make the move to the Premier League.

Still only 21-years-old, it's said that Fabio Paratici is a huge admirer of the player with Zabarnyi having impressed with his integration into life on England's south coast. While Bournemouth have paved a solid foundation for his future career, Spurs would only be too happy to swipe the starlet away from the Vitality Stadium.

Illia Zabarnyi's season in numbers

Bournemouth didn't convince all when they decided to sack Gary O'Neil at the end of the 2022/23 campaign after he kept the Cherries afloat, but the appointment of Andoni Iraola was projected to be a progressive and impactful move.

A slow start did little to quell fears that the upheaval might backfire, but with Bournemouth now picking up 13 points from a possible 15 in the league after suffering a 6-1 defeat against Manchester City, sights have been set up the table.

Bournemouth defenderIllia Zabarnyi.

Zabarnyi has been crucial, starting all 16 matches and actually having yet to miss a minute, as per Sofascore, having also completed 82% of his passes, averaged 4.3 ball recoveries and 3.8 clearances per game and 57% of his contested duels.

Bournemouth defeated Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford on a historic afternoon for the club last time out, and Zabarnyi underscored his credentials as a top-class defensive prospect with a commanding display, making five clearances, blocking three shots, and winning two tackles and interceptions apiece.

Much was made for Iraola's side's incisiveness in Manchester, but such feats would have been rendered impossible had the base not done its job and held the squad together.

Illia Zabarnyi's style of play

Zabarnyi still has a long road to travel but he can take much confidence from his exploits across the maiden stage of his career, where he has been described as "composed & intelligent" and "complete & dominant" by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 19% of central defenders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for successful take-ons and the top 10% for blocks per 90, showcasing his ability to progress the play with the ball at his feet and noting his positional security.

Such attributes are not too dissimilar to that of Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk, with the world-class Dutchman the player who Zabarnyi has moulded his own game from, as he once stated in an interview.

Physically imposing and strong in the air, the 32-cap international's aerial dominance is something that is not easily replicated, but he has invested time into establishing control in this regard and could grow into a player of first-class stature with a transfer to Tottenham.

It is important to stress again that Zabarnyi is only 21, having already cemented a starring role in an impressive Premier League side; when Van Dijk was the same age, he plied his trade for Groningen in the Dutch Eredivisie.

While that is certainly nothing to sniff at, it's an illumination of how much a player will grow, and Spurs might be wise to snap Zabarnyi up before the price tags touted get somewhat exorbitant.

Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk.

Moulding him into a player of Van Dijk's standing, Postecoglou may well provide his London club with a rock-solid leader in the rearguard to ensure the years come are fruitful, with the Liverpool captain even considered "the best centre-back of all time" by the likes of pundit Michael Owen.

While several erstwhile professionals might have a thing or two to say about that, the £220k-per-week monster has been the heart of Liverpool's backline since signing from Southampton for £75m in December 2020, having now amassed 237 appearances, scoring 20 goals and supplying 14 assists for good measure.

Van Dijk ranks among the top 6% of positional peers for passes attempted, the top 12% for goals, the top 5% for assists and the top 3% for aerial wins per 90.

This season, in the Premier League, he has averaged 4.7 ball recoveries and 4.9 clearances per game, completed 91% of his passes, won 72% of his ground duels and 79% of his aerial duels.

Such statistics underscore the unparalleled calibre of his skill set, and while Zabarnyi has a long way to go before he reaches the same level, he has the talent to shoot right to the top over the coming years.

With a manager such as Postecoglou honing his craft and stars such as Van de Ven and Cristian Romero to absorb knowledge from, this is exactly the kind of move Tottenham need to make to fortify their defensive ranks.

Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal have returned to Bangladesh’s ODI side for the three-match series against West Indies, which starts from December 9. Both players had missed Bangladesh’s previous ODI series, against Zimbabwe in October, due to fitness issues.Shakib made his return from a finger injury by leading the Test side to a 2-0 win over West Indies. Tamim, who suffered multiple injuries, has taken longer. He had fractured his wrist during the Asia Cup in September and then missed the West Indies Tests due to a side strain. He was named in the BCB XI squad for a one-day practice match against the West Indians on December 6.Their inclusions have forced Najmul Hossain Shanto and Fazle Mahmud out. Mahmud had made two ducks against Zimbabwe. With the return of Tamim and Shakib, the Bangladesh team management will have a problem of plenty in the top order. They will have to pick one out of Imrul Kayes, Soumya Sarkar and Liton Das as Tamim’s opening partner, with Shakib set to bat at No. 3. Among the three contenders, Imrul had a good run recently, emerging as the top run-getter in the ODI series against Zimbabwe, scoring 349 runs in three matches with two centuries and a fifty.Bangladesh Squad: Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Soumya Sarkar, Liton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah, Rubel Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nazmul Islam, Mohammad Mithun, Mohammad Saifuddin, Abu Hider, Ariful Haque.

'He sucks!' – Matteo Guendouzi savagely criticised amid ex-Arsenal midfielder's disappointing displays since replacing Sergej Milinkovic-Savic at Lazio

  • Nainggolan takes savage swipe
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Guendouzi joined Lazio on loan from Marseille in the summer, with the Serie A club holding the option to buy him outright in the summer. The deal came about after the Italian side sold Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to Al-Hilal for €40m (£34m/$44m), and the ex-Arsenal ace has struggled to fill his sizeable shoes. Before his exit, the Serbia international scored 69 goals and registered 59 assists in 341 games.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Guendouzi has made 28 appearances for Lazio this season in Serie A, scoring twice and laying on three assists, and was also sent off earlier this term, in their 1-0 defeat to AC Milan. Nainggolan, who made 367 appearances in Serie A but now plays in Poland for Bhayangkara, does not believe he is stacking up to Milinkovic-Savic.

  • WHAT NAINGGOLAN SAID

Speaking on Twitch, he said: “Guendouzi only knows how to run. For me, he sucks. I say it like that. Do you start someone like Milinkovic-Savic and replace him with someone like that? He's not doing well, Lazio is doing badly. Tell me one quality about him. He's not fast and those who do athletics must have resistance. For me he is not for Lazio, between him and (Alfred) Duncan, I'd take the Fiorentina midfielder for life. He's not strong, period. He's a normal player."

    WHAT NEXT?

Lazio are currently eighth in Serie A, and have lost three of their last five games. They are next in action on Friday, against Salernitana.

Wolves academy star could beat Fabio Silva to Jimenez’s throne

Wolverhampton Wanderers have benefitted from the talent from their academy in recent years, with another star looking to be the next big thing at Molineux.

The £42.5m sale of graduate Morgan Gibbs-White handed the Old Gold a financial boost last summer, earning a significant profit from the Englishman that stormed through the academy to eventually catch alight on loan.

Now, Gary O’Neil could be close to harvesting Wolves’ next young star, with 18-year-old striker Nathan Fraser on the cusp of breaking through into the first team.

Nathan Fraser’s career so far

Starting his journey with the Midlands club at the age of seven, Fraser signed his first professional contract at Molineux in 2022 after excelling on his journey through the ranks in the academy.

The Ireland U19 international made a statement in the 2021/22 campaign, where he netted ten goals and claimed two assists in 24 appearances, with one goal coming in the Premier League 2, showcasing his ability to perform at a higher level than his age suggests.

Once lauded for his “dedicated” rise to prominence in the squad at Wolves by sporting director Matt Hobbs, the teenager has become a reliable source of goals in the club’s academy.

Last season, Fraser netted seven goals in 26 appearances, prompting a promotion to even higher levels, thanks to the promise O’Neil has seen in his progression.

How Nathan Fraser’s future at Wolves could look

In September, the 18-year-old was officially promoted to the first-team squad after scoring his first senior goal on his debut in the Carabao Cup in August.

Against Blackpool, the Wolverhampton-born sensation scored and assisted to show the manager first-hand what he can offer the squad, with his scoring record in the 2023/24 campaign continuing to impress in the academy.

With five goals in eight appearances this season, the teenager has outscored O’Neil’s star man Pedro Neto this term, reinforcing how deadly he can be when given a chance in the final third.

Nathan-fraser-wolves

Described as an “aggressive and strong” figure in attack by academy coach, Jonathan Hunter-Barrett, the future of Fraser at Molineux could be very bright, particularly when assessing the squad’s options to take the throne from departed goalscorer, Raul Jimenez – who joined Fulham over the summer after scoring 57 goals in 166 games for Wolves.

While Matheus Cunha’s goal-scoring ability is outweighed by his explosive nature to inspire positive passages of play, the teenager could surely battle fellow striker Fabio Silva for a place in the first team.

The Portuguese forward is still adapting to the pace and physicality of the English top flight, with his naivety in front of goal perhaps calling for another loan spell to lure him out of his shell.

With O’Neil’s support, Fraser could be in a position to become Molineux’s heir to Jimenez, with his goal-scoring prowess and suitability to the Premier League perhaps greater than that of the misfiring Silva.

Rangers could ditch Dessers by signing star with 10 goals in 18 games

Glasgow Rangers are enjoying life under new manager Philippe Clement, winning four and drawing one of his first five matches in charge.

The victory against Hearts at Hampden in the League Cup semi-final on the weekend takes the Gers through to their third final in the competition across the previous five years, but they have yet to taste victory.

This could change under the Belgian, especially with the way the Gers are currently playing. In just five matches, the club have scored 14 goals and conceded only two, indicating that the new manager has given the players plenty of freedom to explore their attacking talents and long may this continue.

One of the most pleasing aspects of this new-found confidence in the team is how Clement has managed to get a tune out of players who were clearly struggling under Michael Beale.

Philippe Clement

Sam Lammers scored just once under Beale, yet he put in arguably his finest display for the club against Dundee last week, scoring a screamer from the edge of the box while also registering an assist and with a few more performances like that, he could turn his Gers career around.

Scott Wright has also looked lively since Clement has taken over the Ibrox hot seat, even scoring against Hearts at Hampden in the League Cup semi-final, his first goal since the Scottish Cup final 18 months ago.

The 49-year-old could certainly do some business in the January transfer window and one striker has been touted for a potential swoop.

Rangers transfer news

It's no secret that the Gers have struggled with their attacking options during the early part of the season as Cyriel Dessers was off form and Danilo suffered a fractured cheekbone in September.

With this in mind, could the Light Blues make a move for another centre-forward during the winter transfer window? Kris Boyd certainly believes so.

The former Rangers striker was discussing Aberdeen’s Bojan Miovski, suggesting that the Ibrox side should take a closer look at him.

Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski.

“When it comes to Aberdeen, they probably have the best striker out of the lot.” Boyd said in the Scottish Sun (via Football Scotland).

“Miovski has impressed me a lot since he joined the club. And the more I see of the North Macedonia international, the more I have to think the Dons are lucky to still have him at the club.

"Put it this way, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was to be sold in the January window. That’s not something Dons fans will want to hear, especially where they are sitting right now. But Miovski’s displays at home and in Europe are certain to have attracted attention.

“If Rangers are looking for a new hitman in January then they could do an awful lot worse than making an attempt to sign him. I know, the chances of Aberdeen selling their best player to Gers are highly unlikely.”

Although perhaps a tad unrealistic in January, there is no reason why the Light Blues can't make a move for the striker in the near future, and he is certainly performing better than Dessers at the moment.

Cyriel Dessers' numbers this season

The Nigeria international cost £4.5m during the summer transfer window yet has failed to live up to this price tag so far.

Across 20 matches for Rangers, he has scored just four goals along with registering three assists and unless he can boost this tally in the coming weeks, his future at Ibrox may be rather bleak.

Dessers currently ranks first across the squad for big chances missed in the Premiership (ten), while he also ranks seventh for big chances created (two) and tenth for successful dribbles per game (0.5), suggesting that he hasn’t quite made the desired impact over the first few months of the season.

Clement could change things of course and given the 28-year-old a new lease of life, yet in five games under the Belgian, Dessers has managed to find the back of the net just once, against Dundee last week.

Danilo looks like the real deal however, yet Clement can't aim for success having just one striker in form and this may lead to some action in the January transfer window and Miovski could be an ideal candidate.

Bojan Miovski’s season in numbers

The North Macedonian forward arrived in Scotland during the summer of 2022 as Aberdeen looked to bolster their attacking options, and he certainly hit the ground running during his first season in the north-east.

Not only did he rank first across the Dons squad for goals and assists in the top flight (18), but the striker also ranked first for shots on target per game (one), second for big chances created (six) and for goal frequency (a goal every 181 minutes) as he enjoyed a stellar campaign.

The 6 foot 2 gem has continued this form into the current season, and he has already netted ten goals in just 18 matches, chipping in with three assists too, while he scored the winner against Hibs to send Aberdeen to the League Cup final against the Gers next month.

The £1.2m-rated finisher – as per Football Transfers – was praised by journalist Filip Mishov for his match-winning striker on the weekend, who said: “Clutch striker! The first touch, the run and the composed finish, class… Bojan Miovski is going to the very top, what a moment for the #Macedonian and #AberdeenFC, unreal!”

He certainly knows where the back of the net is and his experience of Scottish football would stand him in good stead should the Light Blues actually make a concrete move for him.

There is no doubt he could be a success, especially with a much higher quality of player surrounding him at Ibrox compared to Aberdeen.

He would be presented with a plethora of chances and judging by his scoring statistics over the previous 18 months, he would excel at putting them away with ease.

Clement will need to try and bring the best out in Dessers, otherwise, the former Feyenoord hitman could be braced for a short spell in Glasgow.

England leave door open for Ben Stokes recall

Stokes missed the second Test at Lord’s this week due to his appearance at Bristol Crown Court, and was omitted from an unchanged 13-man squad for the Trent Bridge Test

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Aug-2018The ECB has left the door open to a recall for Ben Stokes for the third Test against India at Nottingham this week, pending the outcome of his trial for affray.Stokes missed the second Test at Lord’s this week due to his appearance at Bristol Crown Court, and was omitted from an unchanged 13-man squad for the Trent Bridge Test, which gets underway on Saturday.Jamie Porter and Moeen Ali have been retained alongside the 11 men who completed an innings-and-159-run victory on Sunday, a match in which Stokes’ direct replacement, Chris Woakes, was named Man of the Match for his maiden Test century and four wickets across two innings.England squad

Joe Root (capt), Alastair Cook, Keaton Jennings, Ollie Pope, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Moeen Ali, Jamie Porter.

However, in a press release, the ECB added that they “will make an assessment of Ben Stokes’s availability after the trial in Bristol has concluded”, a turn of phrase that suggested that he could be added to the mix if the court finds in his favour. The trial, which entered its sixth day on Monday morning, has reached the summing-up stage, with the jury expected to retire overnight to consider their verdict in a case that involves one other co-defendant, Ryan Ali. A third defendant, Ryan Hale, has already been acquitted due to a lack of evidence.Regardless of the outcome of the trial, the ECB’s Cricket Disciplinary Commission (CDC) is due to meet within 48 hours of the verdict, to consider what sanctions – if any – should be directed at Stokes and his England team-mate, Alex Hales for their parts in the incident outside Mbargo nightclub in the wake of their ODI victory in Bristol on September 24. Hales was not on trial.Stokes, who was withdrawn from the Ashes pending prosecution, returned to international action in New Zealand in February.England have two days off in the wake of their Lord’s victory, and are due to reconvene at Trent Bridge on Thursday, which would be the realistic cut-off for Stokes’ inclusion in the squad, given the need to train ahead of the Test. His last involvement in the series was a three-wicket burst on the final morning of the Edgbaston Test, which sealed a thrilling 31-run win.Speaking after the Lord’s victory, England’s captain Joe Root made light of Stokes’ absence, particularly in the wake of Woakes’ impressive return to the team.”Ben is obviously a huge part of this squad, so it’s a miss him not being here this week,” Root said. “But what it did do was create an opportunity for Chris to come in and perform – and boy, he didn’t disappoint did he? He was outstanding.”It’s nice to see guys really taking opportunities, and that’s something we really want to harness as an example to the guys in and around the squad – ‘when you get your chance, make it as hard as possible to leave you out’.”It’s a great headache to have for us, going into next week.”Trevor Bayliss, England’s head coach, praised the way in which Stokes’ team-mates had put his issues to one side and kept their focus on in-field matters, and anticipated that the Trent Bridge selection would once again be a straight choice between the extra seamer or a second spinner in Moeen Ali.”The results speak for themselves,” he said. “The guys are able to put anything off field out of their mind and concentrate on what they’re doing, and this was the perfect example.””We were all set to play the second spinner in this match if conditions suited, but with the weather around we didn’t have to make that decision. We went with the extra quick and it worked out.”On the deliberations of the CDC, as and when Stokes’ verdict is passed, Bayliss did not expect to be involved.”After the incident in September last year, the disciplinary committee met and made some decisions and we weren’t consulted then,” he said.

Arsenal: Suggestion "incredible" star may be interested in joining Arteta

There is a suggestion that one "incredible" Premier League star may be interested in the chance to join Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.

Who have Arsenal signed?

The north Londoners, in their bid to challenge for another domestic crown this season, spent over £200 million on a quartet of major signings in the summer. Declan Rice is perhaps the pick of the bunch, as the England international put pen to paper on a record-breaking £105 million transfer from West Ham. Netherlands defender Jurrien Timber, who is currently sidelined through injury, joined Rice alongside goalkeeper David Raya and Germany international forward Kai Havertz.

Arsenal managerMikelArteta

Rice and Raya have now established themselves as first team regulars for Arteta, with the latter recently usurping long-reigning number one goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale between the Arsenal sticks. Havertz has come under some criticism but recently notched his first ever Arsenal goal, scoring a penalty in their 4-0 win over Bournemouth last weekend. Timber, meanwhile, is yet to display his true quality after suffering his very unfortunate ACL injury during Arsenal's opening league game.

Arsenal transfer news

While Arsenal invested heavily in the summer, there are reports that they could move to sign more attacking players, including the likes of Ivan Toney (Brentford) and Wolves winger Pedro Neto. Sharing an update on the latter star, journalist Pete O'Rourke has some news.

Writing for Football Insider, the reporter suggests Neto could be interested in joining Arsenal, as he is apparently eyeing up the chance to play for a side who will compete for major honours. Arteta's side are long-term admirers of the Portuguese and attempted to sign him in the summer window, but to no avail.

However, there is some potential bad news, as Wolves are apparently very unwilling to let their star forward leave in the winter window. Neto has scored one goal and grabbed four assists over seven league games so far; standing out as their best-performing player per 90 according to WhoScored. He's been praised by manager Gary O'Neil as a result, who's called him "incredible".

"He has been absolutely incredible for the six or seven weeks I have been here," O'Neil said. "I am really pleased with where Pedro is at. He has given absolutely everything and showed a big moment of quality [at Luton] which sums up how he has been for me for the last six weeks."

Sky pundit Jamie Carragher, speaking to the broadcaster earlier this year, also called Neto a "superstar" player two years ago.

“He’s just come back from a really bad injury. He was a superstar player a couple of years ago," said Carragher (via TBR). “I think if they can get him back, he may be able to provide a bit of magic and around the box to create things or get a goal himself over the next few weeks."

If Arsenal can prise him away from Wolves eventually, he could be an astute signing.

BCCI set for another big payday as e-auction for Indian cricket rights heats up

The bidding for the TV and digital rights to Indian cricket from 2018 to 2023 has already passed the winning bid for the previous cycle by over 15%, and the bidding hasn’t ended yet

Indian cricket’s rags-to-riches broadcast rights story

The bidding for the television and digital rights to broadcast Indian cricket from 2018 to 2023 has already passed the winning bid for the previous cycle by over 15%, and the e-auction has spilled into a second day to resume at 11am on Wednesday. The top bid in the e-auction stands at INR 4442 crores (USD 680 million approx.) in the Global Consolidated Rights (GCR) category, which comprises the worldwide television and digital rights to international cricket hosted by the BCCI in India.Once the bidding began at 2pm IST on Tuesday, the BCCI tweeted an update with an initial top bid of INR 4176 crore for the GCR category; subsequent higher bids were INR 4201.20 cr, INR 4244 cr, INR 4303 cr, INR 4328.25 cr and INR 4442 cr.After every bid, participants got an hour to raise, which made the e-auction a two-day affair because proceedings could not go beyond 6pm IST on Tuesday. The bidding process will continue until the participants notify that they do not wish to bid higher. The bidders were narrowed down from six to three – Sony Pictures Network India, Star India and Reliance – after the BCCI’s legal team carried out technical and feasibility checks before the e-auction began on Tuesday. There were three categories of rights on sale: the Indian television rights and rest of the world digital rights (GTVRD), digital rights for the Indian subcontinent alone (ID), and the global consolidated rights (GCR) comprising worldwide TV and digital rights. The successful bidder will get to telecast 102 men’s international matches over the five-year period compared to 96 in the previous six-year cycle from 2012 to 2018. The 102 matches will be split among the home seasons as follows: 18 in 2018-19, 26 in 2019-20, 14 in 2020-21, 23 in 2021-22 and 21 in 2022-23. The rights will also include men’s domestic matches as well as the India women’s international matches.

As per the latest break-up of the season-wise bid released by the BCCI, the third bid amount of the day of INR 4244 saw the highest per match bid of INR 43 cr for the 2018-19 season, followed by INR 42.50 cr each for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, and INR 40 cr each for the remaining two seasons, 2019-20 and 2020-21. According to a BCCI official, the figures for the last two seasons of the cycle – 2021-22 and 2022-23 – for the final bid of the day could have reached close to INR 47 cr per match to keep the inflation factor in mind. For the last bid made on Tuesday, of INR 4442 cr for 102 matches across five seasons, the average figure per match amounts to INR 43.5 cr which is 8.5% above the previous cycle’s per match average of INR 40.1 cr. The BCCI official expected this per match average to go up to around INR 60-65 cr by the time the bid ends, which would take the total bid amount into the range of INR 6100-6600 cr. That would mean a rise of at least 13% for the per match average and at least 58% when compared with the total amount of INR 3851 cr for the previous cycle. In 2012, Star TV, then owned by Rupert Murdoch, had won the rights to broadcast Indian cricket until 2018. That deal, which also included internet and mobile rights, was valued at INR 3851 cr (approximately USD 750 million at the time). The other bidder that year – at INR 3700 cr (USD 727 million at the time) – was Multi-Screen Media (Sony). The sale of these rights will mean a second huge payday for the BCCI in less than a year. In September 2017, the BCCI had sold the worldwide IPL television and digital rights for the period 2018-22 for INR 16,347.5 cr (US$ 2.55 billion) to Star India.

Celtic Closing In On Late Deal For £65k-p/w Premier League "Monster"

A big update has emerged on Celtic and their pursuit of a deal for a third central defensive signing before the end of the summer transfer window.

What's the latest Celtic transfer news?

Head coach Brendan Rodgers has already added Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke to bolster his options at the heart of the defence and is now closing in on the signature of a player from one of his former clubs.

According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, the Hoops are finalising a late swoop for Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips on a season-long loan deal.

The reporter claimed that the English enforcer made his way to Glasgow on Wednesday night to complete formalities ahead of his switch to the Scottish champions.

Celtic have already completed the signing of Luis Palma from Aris FC this week and are now hoping to make Phillips their eighth arrival of the summer; on top of Hyeok-kyu Kwon, Hyun-jun Yang, Odin Thiago Holm, Marco Tilio, Lagerbielke, and Nawrocki.

How good is Nat Phillips?

The £65k-per-week titan has not been able to break into the Liverpool team on a consistent basis but his performances for Jurgen Klopp's team and his spell on loan at AFC Bournemouth suggest that he has the potential to be an excellent addition for Celtic.

Rodgers could unearth Cameron Carter-Vickers 2.0 in Phillips as the English defender is set to follow an incredibly similar path. The USA international failed to make the grade at Tottenham Hotspur and joined the Hoops on loan initially in 2021 after a temporary spell with the Cherries.

Liverpool defender Nat Phillips.

He then made that move to Parkhead permanent the following summer and has been a revelation for the Bhoys. The former Spurs battler has been named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year in each of the last two seasons.

Despite being unable to make a name for himself in England, Carter-Vickers has been outstanding for Celtic and one of the best defenders in the division, as proven by his inclusion within the league's best XI in both of his campaigns with the club.

Phillips could follow in his footsteps as another central defender who could not make it with a big six team in England, and he also enjoyed a spell on loan with Bournemouth like the USMNT star.

The 26-year-old colossus made 17 appearances for the Cherries during the 2021/22 campaign to help them win promotion to the Premier League and caught the eye with 2.3 tackles and interceptions per game to go alongside an aerial duel success rate of 69%, as per Sofascore.

No current Celtic centre-back made as many tackles and interceptions per outing in the Scottish Premiership last term and Carter-Vickers won 73% of his aerial battles, which shows that both players are dominant when it comes to dealing with threats from crosses and set-pieces.

Phillips also previously showcased his ability at Premier League level with an average Sofascore rating of 7.19 across 17 outings for Liverpool during the 2020/21 season.

The impressive brute, who was described as a "monster" in the air by his Reds boss, made 2.5 tackles and interceptions per clash and came out on top of 66% of his aerial contests.

Therefore, Rodgers could find Carter-Vickers 2.0 in a deal for Phillips as the Hoops target is another aerially dominant defender who could excel in Scottish football in spite of his failure to cut it with a top English side.
