Hogan poops Essex promotion party

Essex’s players set off for a night on the town to celebrate their Division Two title success after suffering only their third Specsavers County Championship defeat of the summer.Promotion to Division One having been sealed on Tuesday when they garnered the five bonus points required to put them in an unassailable position, they found Michael Hogan in party-pooping mood with five wickets for 45 to leave Essex 11 runs short of victory. It was the Australian’s second five-wicket haul in successive games, taking him to 44 Championship wickets for the season. He was well supported by the parsimonious Timm van der Gugten, who claimed four for 56 from 29.5 overs, and ended Essex’s obdurate last-wicket partnership with 19 balls to spare. At one point, Varun Chopra looked as if he might carry Essex to a seventh win on his own when he rattled up 79 out of the 138 scored while he was at the crease. His seventh Championship score in excess of fifty this season – the other six were for Warwickshire – came from 128 balls with 10 fours.

Masters calls it a day

David Masters, Essex’s veteran seamer, has announced that he will retire at the end of the season. His final match will be next week at Kent, the club where he began his career, with Essex set to be presented with the Division Two trophy.
A popular figure at Chelmsford, where he moved to in 2008, Masters has taken more than 900 wickets in his career. In the 2011 season, he claimed 93 first-class wickets, including a career-best 8 for 10 against Leicestershire – another former club. Speaking in front of the pavilion at lunch on the fourth day of Essex’s final home match of the season, he said he was looking forward to not waking up “hurting” every morning.
“It is always a difficult decision to call time on a career you have loved,” he said. “I have been fortunate to spend 20 years at the professional level with three fabulous clubs. After joining Essex in 2008 I feel I found my home. Everyone at the club has treated me brilliantly from the fans, to the coaching staff and the office staff as well.
“The members have been exceptional and the crowd here at Chelmsford really is the best in the country. I leave the team in a good place with the emergence of a number of fast bowlers at the club. To retire after winning the Division Two title is something you can only dream of.”

But with wickets falling all around him, and no one sticking around long after he had gone, Essex were always ahead of the rate but without enough men to see them over the line.Essex had been set 264 to win in a minimum of 91 overs, and the openers put on 92 fairly comfortably in 26 overs before three quick wickets fell. Nick Browne departed to the last ball before lunch, caught in the slips by Will Bragg off van der Gugten for 30. When he reached 20, flicking Morgan off his legs, he became the third Essex batsman to 1,000 Championship runs for the season.Tom Westley, who had passed the milestone in the previous game against Worcestershire, lasted just three balls after lunch before he fell lbw to Michael Hogan without score. And Essex lost another wicket in the immediate post-lunch period when Ravi Bopara was pinned in his crease by one from van der Gugten that kept low.At the other end, Chopra was compiling his highest score since his return to his first county. He despatched a full-toss from Kiran Carlson for his eighth four to reach fifty from 73 balls. He was particularly strong through the offside. But he was fourth out just after an involuntary edge by Dan Lawrence had taken Essex past the halfway point with 43 overs gone. Chopra was beaten by an inswinger from Hogan, who then accounted for Lawrence five overs later to another that swung in and took middle and leg.Essex were less fluent in an afternoon session of 38 overs in which they added just 62 runs. But ten Doeschate joined Adam Wheater just before tea and together they put on 40 in 12 overs before the captain became Hogan’s fourth victim, caught behind by Mark Wallace for 23.Wheater played second fiddle in the partnership, and it was not until the 58th ball he faced that he registered a boundary, stroking van der Gugten through the covers. But he then scooped a return into Hogan’s hands to leave Essex 64 runs away from victory with three wickets left.Glamorgan gave Graham Napier a guard of honour as he came out with runner Lawrence to begin his last innings after a 20-year career with Essex. He contributed 12 in an eighth-wicket stand of 23 with James Foster before he went lbw to van der Gugten. Foster then chased a wide one from Meschede to toe-end it to the wicketkeeper.David Masters received a similar welcome to Napier after confirming his retirement at the end of the season to the crowd at lunch-time. They were equally generous to the last pair when they dropped fairly routine catches in successive balls – Masters at short extra cover by Jacques Rudolph and Jamie Porter in the slips by Aneurin Donald. Van der Gugten took his fourth wicket when he yorked Porter to end a 23-run stand for the last wicket.Essex needed just 14 deliveries with the new-ball in the morning to take the remaining Glamorgan wicket. Not that they required any assistance from their opening bowlers, Masters and Bopara – Wallace decided to chance a second run to Lawrence on the backward square boundary and was run out by a long way.Wallace had added three runs to his overnight score to finish on 78. His 91-ball innings had been crucial in helping Glamorgan recover from 163 for seven, at which point they had been only 130 ahead.

Former Test wicketkeeper Courtney Browne has replaced Clive Lloyd as West Indies’ chairman of selectors, effective immediately. The WICB confirmed the move on Thursday evening but did not announce whether Lloyd, who had been in the role since August 2014, had stepped down of his own choice or been sacked.Browne, who played 20 Tests and 46 one-day internationals for West Indies, has been on the selection panel for almost six years and has been given a two-year appointment as chairman. The WICB also announced that from October 1, Lloyd would move to a new role as a “special ambassador”, in which he would be responsible for acting as a spokesperson for the board at special events.”The time as Chairman was quite rewarding and I am hoping my contribution would have added value to the current system,” Lloyd said. “I made every attempt to serve with distinction and I was pleased to contribute to the game again. I look forward to the new role. The details of that arrangement will be discussed and will be released shortly.”

Pochettino Wants World-Renowned Star At Chelsea

Incoming Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has immediately told Todd Boehly to sign Sadio Mane as his first move this summer, according to a fresh transfer report.

Is Mane having a good season?

The 31-year-old enjoyed six memorable years at Liverpool between 2016 and 2022, winning all there is to win, including the Champions League and Premier League. Last summer, he opted to trade the Reds for Bayern Munich, however, in order to enjoy a new challenge.

While many expected Mane to be a hit at the Bundesliga giants, his time there has been disappointing to date, with injuries and disciplinary issues holding him back. The Senegalese sensation has only scored seven times in 22 league outings, while an incident involving himself and Leroy Sane, in which he punched his teammate after the recent defeat to Manchester City, saw him suspended and fined.

It looks as though Bayern could be happy to see Mane leave this summer, which is where Chelsea come into play.

Could Chelsea sign Mane this summer?

According to Football Insider, Pochettino is immediately "throwing his weight behind a summer deal" for the former Liverpool speedster, ahead of his imminent appointment as Blues boss. It is believed that £30m could be enough to get their man and the Argentine is a "big fan" of the player he came up against in the 2019 Champions League final during his time in charge at Tottenham.

The Senegal legend will be Chelsea's "first attempt at signing a new striker this summer", having moved into more of a central role during the latter part of his time at Anfield.

There is no denying Mane's pedigree as one of Europe's best wide attackers over the past five years or so – Jurgen Klopp has called him "world-class" in the past – but there are questions marks over whether his peak has now drifted by. At 31, he has lost the blistering turn of pace he once possessed, while even last season for Liverpool, he wasn't always the force he used to be.

Admittedly, Pochettino is to be trusted in the transfer window, bringing in the right players for his system, but Chelsea could be wise to look at younger alternatives, and also someone who has been an out-and-out centre forward for longer than Mane. If a deal did happen, he could still be a shrewd addition, still possessing quality and match-winning ability, but they would be unlikely to be signing the truly elite player who shone so much for Liverpool.

Reporter Shares 49ers Takeover Update From Leeds

The 49ers Enterprises’ proposed takeover of Leeds United “is essentially done” but is “contingent” on the club remaining in the Premier League, David Ornstein reports.

What’s the latest Leeds takeover news on the 49ers?

The 49ers have the option to take full control in Yorkshire from Andrea Radrizzani until January 2024. Phil Hay stated last month that a takeover was looking likely this summer, although recent reports have suggested that there are genuine fears relegation could see the American investors walk away from a proposed deal.

Reliable reporter Ornstein was talking to NBC Sports Soccer prior to on Monday evening regarding Leeds’ future and a potential 49ers takeover.

Relayed by MOT Leeds News, Ornstein said that a takeover “is essentially done”, however, it is “contingent on Leeds being in the Premier League”, stating that financially, relegation would be “massive”.

“The cost of relegation would be massive for them and that’s why we’re on tenterhooks here: ‘If we’re interested in Leeds United not only from a financial perspective but from a football one as well.’

“Premier League football has helped transform Leeds United’s revenue but if you look at their financial accounts, there is a realisation that they have maxed out on what they’re able to raise and that’s largely due to their stadium size and it needs some improvements.

“Andrea Radrizzani, who’s been leading this project since 2017, has done fantastic things for the club but he can’t take them on any more on his own and that’s why the 49ers Enterprises come into play.

“It’s a consortium largely backed by American financiers and they’ve been building their stake in Leeds since 2018 and they’re really part of the furniture now.

“I broke a story a while ago that they have an option to buy the club in excess of 400million in January 2024 but it’s always been likely that the takeover will be completed early.

“I understand that the deal is essentially done but it’s contingent on Leeds being in the Premier League, retaining their status in the Premier League and that’s why it makes their survival so important.”

Huge few months both on and off the pitch

Leeds find themselves in a similar position to last season on the pitch with seven games remaining, and relegation could impact the club hugely going forward.

It appears as if there could well be a rethink from the 49ers if Leeds go down, but if Javi Gracia guides the Whites to a fourth season in the top flight, it would be all change at the top.

Therefore, it looks set to be an eventful few months both on and off the pitch no matter what, and Radrizzani may well be desperate for the club to stay up so he can sell and move on, possibly to a share in Inter Milan after recent speculation.

Lee Ryder left stunned by Kieran Trippier in Newcastle’s win

Newcastle United's Kieran Trippier showed his leadership skills on Friday night after taking the pressure off Alexander Isak before his winning penalty.

What did Trippier do against Nottingham Forest?

Eddie Howe's side were able to close the gap on fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur over the weekend with their dramatic victory at the City Ground on Friday night.

The game came down to a late penalty which was converted by the Swedish forward in the dying minutes of the game to see the Magpies take all three points back to Tyneside.

However, in the lead-up to Isak taking the penalty, Trippier picked the ball up and looked as if he was ready to step up and take the spot kick.

But then he offloaded the ball to Isak who had, therefore, avoided any of the mind games being played by the Forest players and this seriously impressed journalist Lee Ryder:

"We've seen nothing like that at Newcastle, really. I think everybody, including the Sky Sports production team, thought it was going to be Kieran Trippier taking it because they put up a graphic of his previous penalty kicks.

"So a great piece of genius. Really got the goalkeeper thinking and then it was just an easy task for Isak to step up and slam it in the corner."

Is Trippier still good enough for Newcastle?

There may have been some question marks over a potential slip in form from the 32-year-old right-back over the last couple of months.

And it has to be said Newcastle's defensive solidity has been tested since the return from the World Cup which has seen fewer clean sheets kept in recent weeks.

However, if there were any question marks over Trippier, they can't be on his leadership skills which were simply exemplary on Friday night.

Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier celebrates victory in the Premier League over Nottingham Forest.

Isak has been in fine form over the last few weeks and impressed massively in the game against Nottingham Forest, however, there was a huge amount of pressure resting on that penalty.

We have seen a number of top players miss from the penalty spot when the pressure is on and Trippier certainly helped to relieve at least some of the pressure.

With some protests being held by the hosts over the award of the penalty, it could have allowed some of the Forest players to potentially get in the head of Isak.

Instead, the Swede was able to blend into the background and avoid the attention before stepping up and slotting the ball home.

In addition to taking the pressure off Isak, it could also be seen as a method of confusing the goalkeeper with Keylor Navas seemingly expecting Trippier to take it.

And when Isak stepped forward, it will have left the Costa Rican shot-stopper trying to recall the homework he will have likely done before the game.

Sky Sports man backs Newcastle to sign Kim Min-jae

Sky Sports presenter Joe Thomlinson has insisted on the Football Daily YouTube channel that Kim Min-jae would be a statement signing for Newcastle United this summer.

The Lowdown: Summer recruitment will be key

Newcastle were unable to bolster their squad sufficiently in the January transfer window with one eye on going bigger in the summer, but if they miss out on the top four, they may need to readdress their transfer strategy.

The Magpies have also not been helped by injuries and suspensions to key players, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Joe Willock and Fabian Schar all missing games of late.

If Newcastle want to become a serious competitor at the top end of the Premier League, they will certainly need to recruit some top-class players this summer to take the next step, as there are still several players in their squad who have been in and around the team for a long time now.

The Latest: Kim Min-jae could be an upgrade

Despite Schar and Sven Botman forming a solid partnership, the former is on the wrong side of 30, and Thomlinson believes signing an eventual successor in the form of South Korea international Kim could be a statement of intent from PIF.

Discussing who Newcastle should sign in the summer, he said: “I don’t know whether it’s actually achievable but I’m putting forward Kim Min-jae at Napoli, who, of course, has the release clause that becomes active for six weeks of the summer at about the £40m mark.

“I just think he’s an incredibly gifted centre-back and if Newcastle are being punchy, he’s the type of player who takes them to the next level, a statement signing at centre-back.

“I know he’s playing on the left for Napoli, but he is right-footed so you hope he’d be able to play on the right with Botman on the left. I think if Newcastle beat out a Manchester United or a top team on the continent to Kim Min-jae’s signature, I think a lot of people would be like, ‘wow, that is a big, big signing for them’.

“So, I think more of a statement name but he is incredible. It’s going to be hard to get him out of Napoli.”

The Verdict: Newcastle will look to improve the league’s best defence

While Schar and Botman have done well together this season as they’ve been at the heart of the meanest defence in the Premier League, the Switzerland international is coming off the back of a concussion in recent weeks and is not getting any younger.

Therefore, signing his replacement while he is still capable of being a starter would be smart recruitment from Newcastle and Eddie Howe so that they aren’t left with a problem area when Schar does start to drop off.

We feel Kim would be a top signing judging by the way the South Korean has taken to life in Italy as he looks on course to lift the Serie A title this season, but if the Magpies wish to land him, they’ll have to act quickly in the summer to activate his release clause before teams such as other potential suitors Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United swoop in.

Rangers injury news on Kemar Roofe

Journalist Dean Jones says that Kemar Roofe’s latest injury setback is ‘hugely frustrating’ for Glasgow Rangers ahead of their Viaplay Cup final clash today.

The Lowdown: ‘Slight issue’ for Roofe

Speaking after last Saturday’s 3-0 win at Livingston in the Premiership, Michael Beale confirmed that the Jamaica striker had a ‘slight issue’ after the weekend, putting his participation in this afternoon’s cup final into doubt.

The forward came off the bench in the second half last week and scored, but he may have picked up an injury in his cameo appearance at Almondvale.

The Latest: ‘Hugely frustrating’ for Rangers

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones has said that it is ‘hugely frustrating’ that Roofe has picked up another injury ahead of such a big game for Rangers against their bitter rivals Celtic.

The journalist said of the 30-year-old: “If he’s injured again, then it is hugely frustrating for everyone at Rangers, and it does make you wonder how the situation turns around.

“He’s a great talent, but his injury record really doesn’t make for a good read or tell a good story. And it’s such a shame because he’s such a good player, but it’s very hard now to rely on him.”

The Verdict: Such a shame

Unfortunately for Roofe, he has struggled to keep himself fully fit since he moved to Ibrox, missing a staggering 45 matches over the last season-and-a-half through injury.

When he has been on the pitch, he has managed to chip in to good effect, netting twice in six appearances so far this term and reaching double figures in the previous two Premiership campaigns (Transfermarkt).

Rangers journalist Jonny McFarlane even goes as far as to claim that Roofe is the best number nine at the club when he is physically right, but unfortunately the Jamaican has never been able to put a consistent run of games together due to his injury problems.

Nonetheless, the Gers will be sweating on his fitness as kick-off approaches at Hampden Park.

West Brom blow ‘hopefully nothing serious’

West Brom midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah’s fresh injury setback is hopefully ‘nothing serious’ according to reliable journalist Joe Chapman.

The Lowdown: Chalobah suffers injury

The 28-year-old joined the Baggies during the January transfer window and he was handed his full debut at home to Blackburn Rovers in midweek.

Unfortunately, Chalobah was forced off after just 52 minutes of the 1-1 draw at the Hawthorns, acting as a concerning situation at a key point in the season.

Now, an update has emerged regarding the situation – one that feels more positive than negative.

The Latest: Chapman allays fear

Writing on Twitter, Chapman said that the feeling is that Chlobah’s injury is not a bad one:

“On Chalobah. Carlos hopeful that it’s nothing serious. Thought he did well on his full debut last night.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/efl-news/” title=”EFL news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Key player in promotion push

This is a relief for anyone of a West Brom persuasion, with Chalobah an experienced and talented player who could be key to their promotion chances.

The Englishman was once hailed as ‘excellent’ by Sir Trevor Brooking during his teenage years, such was his potential, while 144 appearances in the Championship shows he knows the division inside out.

The hope is that Chalobah only misses a small stint of action during these vital weeks, returning to partner Okay Yokuslu and Marc Albrighton in midfield as soon as possible and helping West Brom return to the Premier League.

Celtic: Postecoglou to stay next season

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou will stay at the club until at least the end of his project at Parkhead, according to Anthony Joseph.

The Lowdown: Postecoglou at Celtic

Since arriving shortly after the 2020/21 season had finished and Rangers had waltzed their way to the SPFL title in some style, finishing on 102 points and going the whole campaign unbeaten, Postecoglou has turned the tide back in Glasgow.

He’s won 69 out of 95 games in charge along the way to reclaiming the league title last year and winning the Scottish League Cup, with them currently nine points clear at the summit this time round and in the final of the Scottish League Cup once again.

The Latest: Joseph’s claim

Early in January, The Scottish Sun reported that Postecoglou was on a shortlist of potential Everton managers before Frank Lampard’s sacking, as his accomplishments in Scotland make him an attractive prospect for Premier League sides.

However, speaking on The Celtic Exchange, the Sky Sports reporter claimed that the Australian is committed to the project he’s started at Parkhead and willing to see it through, saying:

(1:09:57) “If it was in the summer and a massive club came in for him I think he would (leave), if it was someone like Leicester (City) or Southampton or something like that even Everton, I don’t think so.

“I get that feeling that he is very honest, he’s very upfront, he very much sees that he’s in a very privileged job to be managing in Europe at a huge club.

“I’m not saying he won’t eventually leave, I think he’ll stay out to see what he feels is the end of the project, I don’t think two seasons is that.”

The Verdict: Not another Rodgers

Given Joseph’s claims, it seems unlikely that the Australian would follow suit of Brendan Rodgers’ controversial exit and head south of the border, just as the Northern Irishman did in 2019 to join Leicester.

With Rodgers previously managing Swansea City and Liverpool in the Premier League the feeling of unfinished business in England with a Leicester side who were champions just four years prior, paired with two league titles won at Celtic, meant his departure was seemingly inevitable.

However, with Postecoglou earning his stripes in Australia and Japan in various roles, he doesn’t hold that unfinished business desire in the Premier League such as Rodgers, meaning an eventual exit in more ceremonial circumstances is much more likely.
