Worth less than Dike: West Brom hit gold selling star who had "great value"

Despite picking up a gigantic 11 draws from 21 Championship contests so far this season, Carlos Corberan’s West Bromwich Albion are still very much in the conversation for promotion.

The Baggies’ 2-1 loss to Watford last weekend was amazingly their first defeat in 13 games, as Tom Cleverley’s Hornets just about got the better of the stern away side through a Vakoun Bayo brace.

Corberan will want his troops to immediately bounce back when Bristol City travel to the Hawthorns this coming Sunday, but will know this clash will be yet another contest that Daryl Dike won’t be deemed fit for as his nightmare in the West Midlands goes on.

Dike's continued injury issues

Dike hasn’t donned a Baggies strip since going down with an unfortunate Achilles tendon injury versus Ipswich Town back in February, with the American well-known to those in the treatment room at this point.

Staggeringly, the ex-Barnsley man has been absent for a colossal 117 games due to recurring injury troubles since making a bumper £7m move a reality.

Thankfully, Corberan has been able to rely on the likes of Josh Maja and Karlan Grant to fire in the goals this season whilst Dike remains sidelined, with Maja boasting ten goals on his own in the Championship whilst Grant has an ever-growing five next to his name.

The Spaniard will be glad that this duo in question have found their shooting boots, having had to wave goodbye to Brandon Thomas-Asante this summer after he switched allegiances to Coventry City.

But, that sale doesn’t hurt as much now when you consider Thomas-Asante’s ongoing struggles with the Sky Blues.

Thomas-Asante's time at West Brom

The ex-Salford City attacker was a top performer for West Brom on his day, with the 25-year-old wearing the tag of being the club’s top scorer last season in the second tier when powering home 11 strikes.

In total, Thomas-Asante would score 21 times for Corberan’s men across 78 games, which would pique the interest of fellow Championship side Coventry this summer on their hunt for some fresh blood up top.

In the end, Thomas-Asante would live up to then West Brom manager Steve Bruce’s glowing words after his arrival at the club in 2022, who stated that the striker would be of “great value” as a “young” and “hungry” option to call upon.

But, although Bruce was ultimately justified in dishing out these compliments, the Ghanaian has since gone on to look goal-shy in his new surroundings, whilst Corberan and Co simply just get on with business with Maja and Grant to call upon.

Worryingly for the 25-year-old, he has only been able to find the back of the net once from 20 clashes in the league this season, with that solitary strike coming all the way back in October versus Blackburn Rovers.

To pile on the misery even more, Thomas-Asante – as per Transfermarkt – has a lesser transfer value than the aforementioned Dike, with the ex-West Brom man only worth £2.4m when contrasted next to his injury-prone counterpart’s slightly higher £2.6m price tag.

Dike will pray that he can make a miraculous recovery from injury soon to become a key part of Corberan’s side again, but Thomas-Asante – on the contrary – will worry that his game-time at Coventry will only lessen now with Frank Lampard in charge.

Whilst it could’ve been a sale that damaged the Baggies severely, the promotion chasers show no visible scars from the departure now, as another playoff finish continues to be eyed up.

Newcastle now considering £66m move to sign Lloyd Kelly upgrade in January

Newcastle are now considering making a mega-money move in January to hand Eddie Howe reinforcements for the second half of the season, according to a fresh report.

Newcastle have money to spend

A frustrating summer for Newcastle United saw them fail with several bids to sign Marc Guehi, a proposed move which dominated much of their transfer window. Though they signed Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer at the beginning of the summer window, it was expected that Howe’s side would add another Premier League level centre-back to their ranks, something that they ultimately failed to do, while Kelly has had a bit part role at St James’ Park so far.

That has seen them start the season in sluggish fashion, with a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace in their most recent outing leaving the Magpies 11th in the Premier League, four points outside the top four and a return to Champions League football.

Newcastle must sell Toon flop who Rafa thought had "fantastic potential"

Newcastle have gone from strength to strength under Eddie Howe, but there are still some stragglers in the mix.

To bolster their chances of a return to elite European football, Newcastle may well have to strengthen in January, and they certainly have the finances to do so after their public chase of Guehi saw them willing to pay £65m for the Crystal Palace defender.

Howe himself hinted at changes coming in January, admitting that he wanted a “freshness” to his squad. “I think freshness is important in a squad, I won’t sit here and deny that”, he explained.

“There needs to be a certain element of trading in and out to keep the group dynamic new. A new dynamic and a new team always has to form every season.”

Now, they could reportedly be ready to use their Guehi funds to sign a different defender in the winter window.

Newcastle considering move for £66m maestro

That is according to a fresh report in Portugal, which claims that the Magpies are keen to sign Benfica talent Tomas Araujo in January. According to A Bola [Via Sport Witness], Eddie Howe’s side “are considering a move to sign the Portugal international in January” in what would prove a costly move.

The Magpies are not the only side to be interested in the young defender, with Chelsea “in love” with the teenager and Manchester United also reportedly keeping tabs on his situation.

His performances for Benfica have drawn widespread acclaim, and he was dubbed “potentially one of the best CBs” by football scouting account DanielScouting on X, who added: “He’s a technical maestro. His turns, dribbling, manipulation, & passing make you think he’s a CM,” and claimed he is already an “elite player”.

The report adds that Benfica do not want to sell the defender, and are readying talks to try and persuade him to agree a new deal with an increased release clause. However, until they do so, he will be available provided any side meets that €80m (£66m) clause. There is no hope of any flexibility on that fee, it is claimed, as Benfica “consider him ‘non-negotiable’ and have ruled out a transfer in the winter market, unless his clause his activated”.

New Zealand Women batter Lauren Down has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI World Cup with a thumb fracture. She will be replaced by the uncapped Georgia Plimmer.Down had injured her right thumb while taking Shafali Verma’s catch during the fifth ODI against India. Subsequent scans revealed a fracture.”Quite simply, the entire squad is absolutely gutted for Lauren.” New Zealand head coach Bob Carter said. “She’s a very popular member of the group and it’s fair to say the team were quite emotional when we got the news she was out of the tournament.”Down has played 22 ODIs, scoring 352 runs at an average of 17.60. She was in good touch during the India series and was named Player of the Match for her unbeaten 64 off just 52 balls, which helped New Zealand chase down 280 in the third ODI.”You saw the impact Lauren had in the recent series against India; she played some really mature innings in the middle order and her fielding was at an exceptional standard,” Carter said.Plimmer, 18, is yet to represent New Zealand in any format. In the ongoing domestic one-day competition, playing for Wellington, she has scored 95 runs in four innings at an average of 23.75.Auckland seamer Molly Penfold will also join the side as a travelling reserve. Both Plimmer and Penfold will undergo the necessary five-day “bridging in” isolation period before officially joining the squad. The New Zealand team arrived in Christchurch on Friday in preparation for their warm-up matches on February 27 and March 1 against Pakistan and Australia respectively.

Dele Alli told why Como is the 'perfect environment' as fresh date for ex-Everton star's potential debut with Serie A side set

Dele joined Como on an 18-month deal in January but is yet to make his debut for Cesc Fabregas' side. Now, journalist Daniele Fisichella believes the Italian outfit is the perfect club for the 28-year-old to rediscover his best form, while outlining why he will get his first appearance for Como this season.

    "THE PERFECT ENVIRONMENT"

Fisichella told talkSPORT: "They can afford to have players like Dele Alli just training and perhaps not playing until the end of the season. But the idea is, of course, to give him time. And probably [this] looks like the perfect environment for him to get back to his best. Cesc Fabregas has been lauded these days for the way he's got his team playing and for also the preparation and the managerial skills that he has demonstrated in his year and a half he's been in Italy.

“So there is no doubt about it, as an environment, it's probably one of the best for Dele Alli. Como is a team that likes to play football, to play on the front foot. So obviously having a player like Dele Alli, if he can get back to his best, will definitely be a blessing for him. I would expect if he continues to train and he shows good improvements, there will probably be a few cameos towards the end of the season. As said, Como are not in danger of going down. It could be the perfect platform for him to show what he's capable of doing.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Dele's career has been on a downward trajectory for years now, including difficult spells at Everton and Besiktas. The England international has also had a number of injury issues but if he can just get back to fitness and get some game time, that could be the spark he needs.

    WHAT NEXT?

Como take on Roma on Sunday in Serie A but it remains to be seen when the former Tottenham star will finally return to first-team football.

Rangers missed out on SPFL titan who’s now worth £6m & better than Propper

Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement is finally beginning to see the fruits of his labour with regard to how his signings from the summer transfer window are performing.

A rebuild was certainly required at Ibrox, with plenty of high earners being sold or released, while a host of young talents arrived in Glasgow, along with a few experienced players.

With a few months of the season now completed, several players have established themselves as key members of Clement’s squad. Connor Barron, for example, has played in every single match this season so far, shining in the heart of the midfield.

Vaclav Cerny is another who has recently put a couple of bad performances behind him to embark on a wonderful run of form over the previous few weeks.

Vaclav Cerny

Indeed, the Czech winger has scored five goals and grabbed three assists in six games and there is no doubt the 27-year-old has cemented his place in the starting XI.

Others haven’t quite lived up to the hype on their arrival, especially a defender signed back in August…

How much Rangers paid for Robin Propper

One area which Clement needed to bolster during the summer was the Light Blues’ defensive options. Connor Goldson was sold after six years in Glasgow, while Leon Balogun was likely to enter his final season at the club.

This saw the Belgian turn to Europe in order to add some reinforcements to his squad, making a move for FC Twente captain Robin Propper.

The Dutchman had played over 200 times in the Eredivisie throughout his career, so it was clear the 31-year-old was experienced enough to take over from Goldson at the heart of the Gers defence.

Clement didn’t exactly have the biggest budget to play with, yet he managed to secure Propper’s signature for a fee in the region of just £1.5m due to a clause in his contract.

On the surface, it appeared to be a smart piece of business, yet after a few months, the centre-back hasn’t quite performed at his best for the Light Blues.

Robin Propper’s Rangers stats

Since making the move to Rangers, Propper has featured 14 times across all competitions, although he has had to settle for a place on the bench in the club’s last two domestic matches.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

The former Twente captain has started three of their four Europa League ties, although his three starts have seen the club concede five goals, including four at home to Lyon in October.

During those games, Propper has won just 48% of his total duels each match, lost possession on average 9.5 times per game and completed just 80% of his passes.

The defender has committed 1.5 fouls per game too, while being dribbled past on 0.8 occasions each match. Is he struggling with his discipline?

Question marks still surround Propper and his performances of late haven’t exactly convinced the Ibrox faithful that he is the right choice to be the leader in the heart of their defence.

Should the Gers have gone all out for a transfer target in 2023 who is now starring in the Champions League? Rather than wait another year for Goldson’s inevitable decline and having to replace him within a matter of weeks.

Auston Trusty was someone Michael Beale wanted, yet he ended up joining Celtic this summer.

Rangers' pursuit of Auston Trusty

Beale faced a similar conundrum to Clement during his first summer transfer window in charge, as a major rebuild was required at Ibrox.

One area which needed some overhauling was the defence, which led the Englishman to add several targets from down south to his list.

Trusty was one name that appeared quite frequently. In May 2023, the then Arsenal starlet was linked with a move to Ibrox, with the club reportedly even submitting a bid in July to secure his signature.

He ended up joining Sheffield United for the 2023/24 campaign, ensuring he got some first-team football in the Premier League.

It looked like the boat had sailed with regard to signing him during the summer, with Celtic eventually securing a deal for the defender, spending £6m to bring him north of the border.

The move looks like an inspired one, that’s for sure.

How Auston Trusty compares to Propper

Hailed by former teammate George Friend for being “incredible”, Trusty has shone for the Parkhead side during his first few months in Scotland, especially in the Champions League.

The American has played in all four of Celtic’s European games so far this season, as they have recorded two wins, a draw and a solitary defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

Across three starts in Europe’s premier club competition, Trusty has succeeded with a staggering 96% of his passes, has been dribbled past just 0.3 times per game, won 4.5 total duels per game – a success rate of 62% – and has also lost possession just 2.3 times per match, showcasing his class on the biggest stage of all.

Compare these stats to Propper’s from the Europa League mentioned earlier, and they are night and day, with Trusty looking like the real deal in Europe.

Signing a competent defender can make all the difference when performing in continental competition.

This is one area in which Clement has struggled, and it is clear the Ibrox side blundered massively by failing to sign Trusty back in 2023.

Of course, the £5m asking price that Arsenal demanded was clearly too much for the club. Instead, they splashed money on players such as Sam Lammers, Cyriel Dessers and Danilo instead.

It remains to be seen what the Gers will do in the January window, especially as Balogun enters the final six months of his contract. With the midfield improving after every game while Cerny and Nedim Bajrami settle in nicely, might another defender be signed?

If they can land someone similar to Trusty, then the second half of the season may see a change in fortunes, no doubt about that.

Daniel Farke shares exciting Leeds free agent update with transfer close

Leeds United and Daniel Farke are “closer” to signing a free agent, according to an exciting new transfer update.

Leeds linked with free agents Kouyate, Guilavogui and Coquelin

The Whites enjoyed a brilliant return to action following the international break on Friday evening, handing rivals Sheffield United their first Championship defeat in the process. Leeds even managed to score from a corner thanks to Joe Rothwell and Pascal Struijk, with Joel Piroe and Mateo Joseph combining late on to seal a 2-0 win.

It was Rothwell and Ao Tanaka who shone in the middle once again following injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev, and Farke confirmed after the game that Leeds were still looking at a versatile free-agent signing.

“We still need one [a midfielder] because the next game is Tuesday. A lot of rest for us by our standards. We have to stay awake with the options out there, with centre-backs too. Thank God, Max is coming back, but he has missed a lot of football. Yellow cards too. We need depth. If there is a chance, we will do it.

“If we find a perfect fit, physical player who covers two positions, adds experience, that would be beneficial.”

There have been plenty of names mentioned including former Nottingham Forest man Cheikhou Kouyate. However, any transfer for the Senegal international appears to be off due to concerns over financial demands.

Former Arsenal and Villarreal midfielder Francis Coquelin had also been mooted, however, rumours over a deal for Leeds to sign Coquelin have gone cold in recent days.

Leeds are also considering signing Josuha Guilavogui, who used to play for Wolfsburg and Atletico Madrid, and he was spotted with a fan at Elland Road on Friday evening.

Farke shares update on Leeds free agent signing

Leeds Live journalist Joe Donnohue shared updates out of Thorp Arch from Farke’s pre-match press conference on Monday.

Ahead of the game against Watford, Farke revealed that a deal for Leeds to sign a free agent is “closer”, with a decision made by the end of next week.

“A bit closer, latest by the end of the next week we will have a decision made but it can happen quick and let’s see.”

Should Guilavogui be the man to come in for Leeds, he would offer another option as a holding midfielder and even be able to cover at centre-back if required, with Joe Rodon close to a one-match suspension and Max Wober still out through injury.

Tanaka and Rothwell will have a lot of football to play for Leeds before Ampadu and Gruev recover from their respective knee injuries, so a move for the 34-year-old appears to be a shrewd one. It’ll be one to watch in the coming days following Farke’s exciting comments.

"What’s going on?" – Clement slammed for treatment of "incredible" Rangers gem

Philippe Clement’s use of an “incredible” Rangers player has left pundit Michael Stewart baffled, leaving him to admit he doesn’t understand what’s going on at Ibrox currently.

Clement feeling the heat at Rangers

The Gers may have won 2-1 at home to St Mirren on Sunday, but there is no question that Clement is still fighting hard to save his job. It was far from the most convincing of performances, and to only narrowly beat a struggling side at home is nothing to write home about.

A far bigger test of Rangers’ Scottish Premiership title credentials arrives on Wednesday evening, with the Scottish giants making the trip to an Aberdeen side who are currently level on points with Celtic at the top of the table, only trailing them on goal difference.

Defeat at Pittodrie could even prove to be fatal for Clement, considering it would leave them nine points behind the Dons, and likely Celtic as well, considering Brendan Rodgers’ side host eighth-place Dundee on Wednesday.

There are plenty of supporters who feel that the Belgian is doing lots wrong in his job currently, from tactics to team selection, and some further criticism has now come his way.

Stewart baffled by use of "incredible" Rangers ace

Speaking on The Scottish Football Social Club [via Ibrox News], Stewart admitted his confusion at how Rangers boss Clement has used Dujon Sterling of late.

“I just don’t understand what’s going on with Sterling. When you look at the back end of last season, he was a must-play anywhere on the park starter. One of the first names on the sheet, wherever it was, you just had to find a space for him.

“Now, with all the troubles with Rangers have got, he’s not getting a sniff anywhere. I just don’t get it.”

Rangers midfielder Dujon Sterling.

It does seem odd that Sterling has been so underused by Clement this season, with only two starts and five substitute appearances coming his way in the Scottish Premiership, totalling only 254 minutes. The Englishman has found it hard to find any rhythm since the start of the campaign, given the manner in which he has been used.

Sterling is a talented and versatile midfielder who has proven his worth to Rangers in the past, making 48 appearances to date, winning the Scottish League Cup last season and being hailed by Andy Halliday.

Clement surely has to be considering the idea of playing Sterling more regularly, starting against Aberdeen, but he does seem to have decided that he doesn’t consider him a key man this season.

The Rondo, Neymar Edition: Could the Brazilian star actually sign with Chicago Fire? Is he really MLS-bound? And what does this mean for Lionel Messi's Inter Miami?

GOAL US writers discuss Neymar to MLS reports, whether Chicago could be a good fit and impact for Miami

It appears that Neymar to MLS may no longer be the pipe dream it was once considered. The Brazilian has reportedly entered discussions with the Chicago Fire about a potential move, and while talks are very much preliminary, there is reason to believe that a MLS transfer could actually happen.

At this point, it is worth slamming on the brakes and thinking practically. Neymar would be immensely expensive. He makes hundreds of millions every year at his current club Al Hilal. Chicago, who are reportedly willing to break the bank to sign him, is reportedly only offering something around $20 million. And don't forget, there are other potential global destinations.

There also remain broader questions about his fit in the Windy City. Does Neymar really want to play in frigid temperatures? Has anyone told him how cold it is in Chicago? Furthermore, with Messi, Jordi Alba, Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets all playing for Inter Miami, does it not make far more sense for him to play in South Florida?

It's all rather intriguing, with inevitable twists and turns to come. GOAL US writers break it all down in a Neymar-specific edition of… The Rondo.

Get the MLS Season Pass today!Stream games nowGetty ImagesDoes Neymar to MLS in general make sense?

Tom Hindle: It's a no-brainer. Neymar's days at the top of football are long gone. A mixture of injuries and a lackadaisical attitude toward the sport have made him a perfect candidate to keep the good old-fashioned "retirement league" stereotype going. It is also worth mentioning at this point that MLS is not an easy ride for anyone these days. The Brazilian won't be able to stroll through games. But the distinction here is that he seems convinced that he be able to do so. He's also tailormade for the American glitz of this all. Add the fact that he's shown a real reluctance to get back to his best following a hamstring injury, and this all looks perfect.

Ryan Tolmich: From a marketing perspective, obviously. From an on-field perspective, TBD. Neymar's injury issues have been obvious. They're essentially the reason he's available now in the first place. His move to Saudi Arabia has gotten Al-Hilal little return on investment on the field and, until he proves otherwise, there are legitimate concerns on how he's fare in MLS, where travel is longer and where some fields have artificial turf. Would it be fun to watch? Absolutely. Is it a guaranteed success? Not by a long shot.

Jacob Schneider: In every single world, it makes sense. He is arguably the best Brazilian footballer since Pele himself, and arguably a top-five player of his generation. He sells jerseys, he’s the face of a club, and he becomes an instant top-20 celebrity athlete in the United States – if not higher. There’s just so much about it that makes sense.

Alex Labidou: From a marketing perspective, Neymar to MLS makes complete sense. Since its inception, MLS has struggled to crack the TV ratings puzzle, and in a crowded American sports landscape, star power drives attention. However, from a playing perspective, there are significant concerns. Neymar hasn’t played more than two-thirds of a season since his final year at Barcelona in 2017. MLS already saw the impact of Messi missing half of last season – can the league afford for its potential second-biggest star to appear in just one-third of a season while commanding a salary upwards of $20 million?

AdvertisementGettyIs there any real chance he goes to Chicago?

TH: Technically, based on where things are in talks, yes. Chicago have his discovery rights, and there is even talk of a specific salary they would be willing to offer (around $20 million.) But logically, it's hard to see. Neymar needs a warm, sunny place, where he can go to the beach, go clubbing and enjoy a luxurious lifestyle. With all due respect to the Windy City, this isn't it.

RT: Depends. Does Neymar want to be THE guy or does he want to play with his friends? At Inter Miami, he'd be with the Barca Boys, which could be fun. However, dating back to his move to PSG, Neymar has shown a desire to be out of Messi's shadow and be his own man. It's why he left Barcelona to begin with, and it's partly fueled by ambition and partly fueled by ego. Moving to a Fire team that has struggled for years is a way to prove he can be that game-changer in a big city in a country he has an obvious affinity for. Will that desire outweigh the power of friendship, though? Only he knows the answer.

JS: Sure there is. Does it make sense? Not at all. It’s cold, and windy and it is a club that, for lack of a better word, has been mediocre for way too long. Of course, the Fire are undergoing a new era under Gregg Berhalter, but it feels like this is a potential disaster waiting to happen from a performance perspective. He would be a brilliant marketing campaign to make them relevant again, but if he doesn’t turn out on the pitch the way they want, it feels like it could be all for nothing considering they are revamping their entire roster in hopes of competing with MLS’ elite in 2025.

AL: This all unfortunately feels like a smokescreen for an inevitable move to Inter Miami. Throughout his career, Neymar has always typically shied away from situations where cold weather is involved – remember, Chelsea tried to get him twice and failed with weather being a factor. Money and opportunity do talk and Neymar could reach iconic status in Chi-town, but it's tough to envision him playing in the winter in the Windy City.

ImagnWhy would Chicago want Neymar?

TH: Well, that's actually hard to say. There are two elements to this all. The first is Neymar the brand. No matter where he plays, shirts will fly off the shelves. They will see spikes in attendance, jersey sales, social media following, and pretty much every single revenue stream that doesn't come from a TV deal. In that sense, they should throw whatever money it takes to make happen.

For Neymar the footballer, things might be a little trickier. The Fire would have to tweak their roster and surround the Brazilian with some reliable legs to minimize the pressures put on his already nonexistent defensive work rate. But when you swing big, you have to be prepared for everything that comes with it. There's also every chance Neymar doesn't care about football anymore. If Chicago isn't stupid, it will have a plan here.

RT: Why wouldn't they? Chicago is a big city that, right now, lacks a big player on the soccer field. The Fire are always fighting for relevance, and bringing in a legitimately famous world-renowned star would certainly put them in the spotlight. It's something this team hasn't really had in years, but it's something that the club clearly yearns for. On-field, figuring it out will be tricky but not impossible, particularly if Berhalter can surround Neymar with runners and workers, but the on-field balance would be very important to making this move work.

JS: Why wouldn’t anyone want Neymar? In sports, there’s often a risk with most moves when it comes to trades and transfers. In the NBA this year, the Minnesota Timberwolves traded away Karl Anthony Towns in hopes that their return would see them better off and it has gone awful as they sit eighth in the West. It’s the perfect example of a move gone wrong. Then, there are moves gone right that were risky at first, like the LA Dodgers acquiring Mookie Betts in 2020. He has since helped them to two World Series titles.

For Chicago, they’re banking on the fact that he is arguably the best South American footballer we’ve seen in nearly 50 years, and on his best day, he is limitless. However, the risk at hand is he has rarely been seen over the past few years. Regardless, though, this feels like a move they have to at least try to make.

AL: Michael Jordan. Walter Payton. Patrick Kane. Chicago has had some great sporting icons in its history and Neymar has the chance to join that fraternity. Let's face it, the city right now is hurting in the sports scene. Caleb Williams didn't exactly change the Bears' fortunes this year, the Bulls haven't been relevant since Derrick Rose tore his ACL and the 2024 White Sox were literally the WORST team in baseball's 100-plus years history. Neymar's arrival would finally give the Fire a chance to make some inroads in the city and give its biggest sports star. Will that be enough to sell Neymar on coming there? Time will tell.

Getty Images Is he the perfect Miami player?

TH: Yes. Next question.

RT: He's the perfect big-city player. No disrespect to the smaller markets in MLS, but Neymar, more than anyone, is a player built for the bright lights. Given the flair he brings, on and off the field, he's a player that needs to be in a major market, whether that's Miami or elsewhere. Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, LA – these are the types of cities Neymar will clearly gravitate to, particularly knowing that the big reason he'll be coming here is for the lifestyle. By and large, the Brazilian star will want a comfortable life, things to do and, perhaps, to play with his friends so, in that regard, it's easy to see why Miami would make sense.

JS: He’s the perfect Diego Gomez replacement. Whether or not he’s the perfect player for Miami is another discussion, though. That is a lot of personality in one team, and you have to ask the question: Does he really want to live in Messi’s shadow again? Depending on that answer determines whether or not he’s the perfect player for them. If he is OK playing second fiddle to the Argentine then it’s an absolutely brilliant move. But if not, it could spell disaster on the pitch.

AL: No. But he'll certainly line up David Beckham and part-owner Lionel Messi's bank accounts if he joins. The problem with Neymar's arrival is he adds another aging star to a team that already has shown susceptibility to pressing teams and athleticism. Miami doesn't need Neymar, it needs pace and guys who can track back when an attacking sequence blows up.

Furthermore, it wouldn't be great for MLS if Neymar were to join Miami. The league needs more stars and more stars in bigger markets. Right now, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas, and Houston are all major top 10 markets in the U.S. that don't have a frontline star who generates traction from ratings or a putting butts-in-seats perspective. That needs to change this season.

Unlike Idah & Bernardo: Rodgers must drop 6/10 Celtic man who "struggled"

Celtic booked their place in the semi-final of the League Cup with a dramatic 5-2 win over Championship side Falkirk at Parkhead on Sunday.

The Hoops will now take on Aberdeen in the last four at Hampden Park for a place in the final, despite an upset being on the cards for large spells of the game.

Falkirk went 1-0 and 2-1 up during the match but Brendan Rodgers’ side bounced back with goals from Paulo Bernardo, Adam Idah (x2), and Nicolas Kuhn (x2).

The manager made a few changes to his starting XI to hand chances to some of the fringe players in the squad and two players, in particular, caught the eye.

Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah grasped their chance

Bernardo was handed an opportunity to showcase his quality after being dropped to the bench in favour of Arne Engels in the last two matches.

The Portugal U21 international made his mark on the game with a thumping volleyed finish from Alex Valle’s knockdown to draw Celtic level at 1-1 in the first-half, to remind Rodgers of his ability in the final third.

Kyogo Furuhashi has scored two goals and missed nine ‘big chances’ in all competitions this season, which suggests that the door should be open for Idah to push for a starting spot.

The Ireland international struck twice, inside two minutes, to take Celtic from 2-1 down to 3-2 up, in the second half, and the second goal was a sublime take and finish from the former Norwich man.

Unlike Idah and Bernardo, one player who did not grasp his chance to stake a claim for a place in the starting XI in the Scottish Premiership moving forward was right-back Anthony Ralston.

Anthony Ralston's struggles against Falkirk

The Scotland international has only been utilised off the bench in the Premiership so far this season and was handed an opportunity to shine against the second tier outfit.

Unfortunately, though, he did not do enough to suggest to Rodgers that Alistair Johnston’s place as the regular starting right-back for Celtic is in danger.

BBC Scotland’s Kheredine Idessane said that the Hoops defence “struggled” to deal with the Falkirk attackers and Ralston was part of that struggling backline.

The 25-year-old dud, who was handed a player rating of 6/10 by FootballScotland, let himself down with his defending for the second goal for the visitors, as he got caught ball-watching and left Finn Yeats in acres of space at the back post to head past Kasper Schmeichel.

He did provide a nice pass to Kuhn for Idah’s first goal after popping up in a left-back position momentarily, but his overall display was not good enough to earn himself a place in the starting XI moving forward.

Therefore, Rodgers must brutally ditch Ralston from the starting line-up for the clash with St Johnstone in the Premiership next weekend, with Johnston slotting straight back into the team.

Whereas, Bernardo and Idah’s goals may have given the Northern Irish head coach a decision to make when he comes to select his next XI.
