Talking Tactics: 15-year-old Cavan Sullivan made his first start with the Philadelphia Union in U.S. Open Cup – what did we learn?

GOAL looks at Sullivan's first start, how he fared, and what it indicates for the future of one of the U.S.'s brightest talents

It all happened rather quietly. Philadelphia Union have been working next-great-hope Cavan Sullivan into the fold for the best part of 12 months now. But for all of the good PR and positive vibes, he hadn't managed more than a few cameos and lively stints off the bench.

That is, until last week. Sullivan started and played 120 minutes of an admittedly grueling and often ugly U.S. Open Cup game against Indy Eleven.

The Union won on penalties, in the end, avoiding a Cupset, but not doing so in particularly convincing fashion. New manager Bradley Carnell put out a lineup consisting mostly of fringe first-team players and reserves. The USL side went full strength, and gave as much as they got. Penalties are a cruel way to go out of a tournament, especially when you hold a team of superior quality and budget over 90 minutes plus two halves of extra time.

Still, this game will likely be remembered as the one where Sullivan got his first start. And although it wasn't the highest profile affair – that's kind of the point – it was still one that might indicate where the somehow-still-15-year-old might operate for the Union in the next two full MLS campaigns before he moves to Manchester City.

GOAL takes a look at Sullivan's first start, how he fared, and what it might say for the future of one of the U.S.'s brightest talents.

ImagnA long-awaited first start

The Union have been smart about this whole thing. Sullivan has played just 48 minutes in MLS this year. That is by no means a bad thing. The team have been doing just fine with him in a rather limited role. They are third in the Eastern Conference and have won seven of 12 matches. There is no need to toss him in, risk injury, expand his role, or tinker with a winning formula.

This is also, of course, the paradox of having a really talented youngster. He is probably the best natural footballer the Union have in their ranks. But he is also has little top-level experience. He plays in a position of relative strength for Philadelphia, and even if he is better naturally than a number of their other attacking options, there isn't a great need for him to play – today.

The flip side of that is it leaves expectant fans for Philadelphia and the USMNT rather disappointed. Sullivan has made it clear that he wants to play for the USMNT – and big picture, win the Ballon d'Or. The style, swagger and wonderful left foot are all there. Fans want to see him play.

Yet the Union are still keeping him on a tight leash. It may be frustrating for some, but it's probably the right move for his career development – no matter how well he can kick a ball.

AdvertisementImagnA statistical overview

That's why the U.S. Open Cup fixture made sense of his introduction. Indy Eleven have a good record in the competition, but they are still far from the level of an MLS side. Carnell, meanwhile, wanted to rest some of his first-teamers – or at least save some legs. It was always going to be a lower intensity night with fewer fans in the building and fewer viewers. Perfect time to let the kid play.

Sullivan started, roughly, on the right side of a 4-4-2 – the Union's preferred system so far this year. On paper, the numbers were agreeable, if slightly unspectacular. Sullivan played 120 minutes, completed 30/40 passes, created two chances, and had six attempts on goal – three of which were on target.

The heatmap tells a mostly similar story. Sullivan stuck to the right side of the pitch, occasionally ventured inside, and spent most of the game pretty much doing his job. Any coach would conclude that Sullivan put in a good shift, did exactly what was asked of him, and ensured that the regular starters could rest their legs in the midst of a hectic league schedule. That's basically what he said.

"Cavan wants to play, he wants to express himself, he wants to get on the pitch,” Carnell outlined after the game. “He wants to prove himself, and he wants to prove he belongs with the team. He did a great job. He’s young, fit, hungry … it was fun to watch him play tonight.”

IMAGNMoments of promise

But watch the game, and there were some real indications that Sullivan was operating a little faster than everyone else on the pitch. His first touch was sharp from the first minute, and while the rest of the Union rather slumbered their way through the game, Sullivan tried to break it open. He took five shots in the first half alone, and was always looking for the incisive moment.

Perhaps the passage that summarized his performance the most was in the 37th minute. He received a pass just outside the box, 19 yards from goal in the right half space. The smart move, at that point, would have been to take the ball to the byline and cut it back to one of four Philadelphia runners darting into the box.

Instead, Sullivan cut sharply onto his left, a sent two Indy defenders skirting the wrong way, and unleashed a shot on goal. It was pretty easily blocked by a deluge of defenders who had diligently tracked back. He latched onto a loose ball in the same phase of play. Again, there were perhaps two passes on; he could have fed either Union forward. Sullivan had a shot on goal instead, stinging the palms of the Indy goalkeeper.

He did much the same in extra time. Sullivan darted into the box to snag loose ball, six yards out from goal and facing a near-impossible angle. The pass across the box was on. Instead, he tried to fire into the roof of the net – but launched the ball over the bar. His teammate was not happy.

He went for the spectacular when the simple was on. There are no stats for valiant failures, or almost-goals. But from the perspective of a young player learning his craft, these will go down mostly as good things – especially given the final score.

IMAGNA mixed body of work

There were some shortcomings. Sullivan may have been active and assertive in the first half, but his influence rather waned in the second. In fairness, it was partially his team's fault. The Union should have led by two or three at half time. They came out slightly sluggish after the break. Indy grabbed a goal on 48 minutes, and then put in the kind of resolute defensive showing that perhaps deserved three points.

In those moments, when the game became a slog, Sullivan faded. It was an odd game in the second half. The Union didn't seem to have the legs to press, but Indy didn't really want the ball, either. The Union completed 225 passes to Indy's 132, and 42 percent of their passes came in the final third. They put nine shots on goal, attempted 11 crosses, and hit the post once.

In other words, they were camped out in their opponents' half, created a lot, but didn't manage to find the back of the net.

Indy were simply up for the scrap. And that's where you could see Sullivan's need for improvement. He is, remember, still 15, and although not afraid to tackle, isn't the biggest physical presence. He won four of his eight duels, and lost possession, due to either giveaways or misplaced passes, 18 times. Only when Indy decided to open the game up a little more, and spaces became bigger, did Sullivan get back to playing football again.

Chelsea on alert as "wonderful" midfield target cleared to leave for £25m

Chelsea have been alerted to the availability of a “wonderful” midfielder, who has now been cleared to leave his club for £25m this summer, according to a report.

Blues planning summer transfer business

Although the winter transfer window has only just ended, the Blues have already started to work on their summer transfer business, with Enzo Maresca planning to make additions in a number of different positions.

One area in which Maresca is keen to strengthen is centre-back, and there is a belief that Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi will opt to move to Stamford Bridge this summer despite interest from a number of the Premier League’s top clubs.

The west Londoners have also been chasing a striker for quite some time, and they remain in pole position to sign Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap at the end of the season, with the former Manchester City man believed to be keen on the move.

Not only are Chelsea keen to strengthen in defence and attack, but they could also bring in some new faces in the middle of the park, having recently made the decision to sell Andrey Santos if they are able to make a significant profit.

AC Milan could offer Chelsea £103k-per-week star in part-exchange for Felix

The Rossoneri are already making plans to sign him permanently.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 8, 2025

According to a report from CaughtOffside, the Blues have been alerted to the availability of young Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg, who has now been cleared to leave the Black Cats for £25m in the summer.

However, given that Rigg is regarded as one of the top young prospects in England, there may be stiff competition for his signature, with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United also being named as potential suitors.

Sunderland are now resigned to losing the midfielder, despite previously being unwilling to sell him, with the Championship side looking to cash in for a big fee.

Rigg could be a future star

Although he is just 17 years old, the teenager has already made 54 first-team appearances for Sunderland, including 27 in the Championship this season, aiding his side’s promotion push by chiming in with four goals and one assist.

Former Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray has also previously lauded the youngster, saying: “He knows where the goal is and wants to run forward, he’s got energy to burn and can keep running all day.

“Rigg is doing really well and is a real positive for our football club. I’m eulogising about him there, we shouldn’t overly build him up. He’s still a young boy but he has wonderful qualities and wonderful attributes.”

Sunderland'sChrisRiggand Wilson Isidor celebrate after the match

£25m is a large fee for such a young player, but the Sunderland ace’s emergence as a first-team player at such a young age indicates he is destined for great things.

As such, Chelsea should make an approach to sign Rigg this summer, but it may be difficult to win the race for his signature if they don’t secure Champions League football amid the fierce competition for the European places this term.

Another Kulusevski: Spurs want to sign "unreal" PL star before the deadline

Tottenham Hotspur have been quiet during the January transfer window this month, only making one senior addition in the form of goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, who joined from Slavia Prague a couple of weeks ago.

However, Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy appear to have ramped up their efforts to land reinforcements before the window closes on Monday night, with Mathys Tel having looked the most likely to move to North London in the coming days.

Spurs already agreed a fee with Bayern Munich for the 19-year-old, but the teenager has reportedly rejected the proposal, handing the Lilywhites a real blow late in the window.

Owner Levy travelled to Munich on Friday afternoon to try and progress the deal, although those efforts appear to have been in vain, with the club now looking to other targets instead.

With that in mind, efforts could be ramping up to land another attacking talent before the window closes until the summer.

Spurs plotting move to land £55m PL star

According to The Express, Spurs are plotting a move for Southampton attacker Tyler Dibling to further improve their forward line in the coming days.

The 18-year-old has enjoyed a superb breakout campaign despite the Saints’ struggles in 2024/25, scoring twice in 20 appearances, but catching the eye with his direct and fearless nature.

Southampton's Tyler Dibling celebrates scoring their first goal with Southampton'sKyleWalker-Peters

The report claims that the winger has emerged as a serious target, with the north Londoners ideally wanting to secure a move this month rather than the summer, with his current side desperate to keep hold of him until the end of the season at least.

It also states that Spurs youngster Tyrese Hall has been discussed internally at St Mary’s to be included in any potential deal which would see Dibling move to North London – with Postecoglou wanting to loan out the youngster this window.

However, it’s previously been reported that the Saints are holding out for a fee in the region of £55m for the teenager, as they look to fend off any interest from the likes of the Lilywhites.

Any move could see the Englishman follow in the footsteps of one player who’s thrived at the club in recent times after his own winter transfer to North London.

Why Dibling could be another Kulusevski for Spurs

Swedish international Dejan Kulusevski has been a shining light through what has proved to be a disappointing campaign for the club to date, often being the man to make things happen in attacking areas.

The 24-year-old has registered 18 combined goals and assists throughout 2024/25 to date, a tally that is his highest since completing his move to the club back in January 2022.

This campaign has even seen Kulusevski shift into a more central role on occasions to help boss Postecoglou cope with the injury crisis – but he’s taken to the role like a duck to water.

Undoubtedly, he’s now one of the first names on the teamsheet for Spurs on a regular basis, with it being hard to imagine where the side might be if it hadn’t been for his contributions.

However, any move for Dibling could see the club land another version of the former Juventus talent, with the Southampton star very similar to Kulusevski in terms of their favoured foot, ability to feature centrally or out wide and their creative nature.

When comparing their respective stats from 2024/25, the teenager has matched or bettered the Swede in various key areas, highlighting how much of an impressive addition he would be to the side.

Dibling, who’s previously been dubbed an “unreal talent” by analyst Ben Mattinson, may have registered slightly fewer combined goals and assists but has bettered the current first-team star for take-ons completed, subsequently achieving a better success rate – offering Ange the direct threat that he’s been missing as of late.

He’s also registered slightly more shots per 90, whilst matching Kulusevski for shots on target per 90, demonstrating he has that end product to match his mazy runs and powerful sprints with the ball at his feet.

£55m may seem like a huge investment for such a young talent who’s only just broken through into the first team and started to make his mark in the Premier League.

However, if he’s producing such impressive figures at such a tender age, it’s a scary thought of how good he could become should he follow in the Swede’s footsteps at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The next Patrick Roberts: Sunderland chasing move for "magic" star

It’s been no great covered-up secret this January transfer window that Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris is looking to sprinkle in some more quality to his Sunderland side in the attacking positions.

Indeed, the Black Cats were pursuing the services of Tom Cannon as a statement buy up top, only for the ex-Stoke City loanee now said to be closing in on a move to promotion rivals Sheffield United instead.

Other names in the striker department continue to be linked with a move to Wearside, but it isn’t just in the centre-forward areas where the Frenchman will want to improve in attack, with an exciting winger now on their radar.

Sunderland chasing signature of new winger

As per a report by Football Insider this week, Sunderland are very much locked in a race this window to try and snap up Celtic winger Luis Palma, with a whole host of other Championship clubs sniffing around alongside the Black Cats.

Football Insider reveals that Swansea City and Queens Park Rangers are also eyeing up the Bhoys forward, with Palma presumably keen to leave the Glasgow giants behind owing to his game-time depleting this season under Brendan Rodgers.

Of course, the promotion chasers have struck absolute gold in the past when recruiting attackers that have called Scotland home briefly, with Patrick Roberts entering the building in 2022 after a memorable loan stint at Celtic Park.

What Palma could offer Sunderland

Whilst Palma’s time at Celtic has begun to fizzle out, he could go on to be the second coming of Roberts if a move was sealed, as the Honduras international has shown in the past that he can dazzle down the left wing for his current employers.

Former Celtic winger Patrick Roberts.

After all, the 25-year-old did put together some promising numbers during his debut season donning the iconic green and white hoops of Celtic.

Across his explosive 2023/24 campaign, Palma would help himself to a mightily impressive ten goals and ten assists in all competitions, with two of those strikes even coming in the Champions League as the wantaway attacker showed off his quality on Europe’s grandest stage.

Roberts would equally thrive at Celtic Park before taking the leap to join Sunderland permanently down the line, with his own impressive goal and assist haul of 18 strikes and 26 assists tallied up during his two-season loan spell at the club.

He would never look back when securing a deal to join the Black Cats for good, with the 27-year-old up to two goals and five assists this season down the right wing as one of the more experienced heads in the youthful Stadium of Light dressing room.

Whilst the Sunderland stalwart continues to excite on his familiar right channel, the options on the opposing flank aren’t exactly endless for Le Bris when looking at the table above, with Enzo Le Fee drafted into this position in the past couple of weeks owing to both Romaine Mundle and Tom Watson nursing worrying injury knocks.

That’s where the “magic” Celtic attacker – as he was once labelled by former Bhoys great Peter Grant – could come in and save the day, with a new striker perhaps also joining him through the door very soon.

Celtic stars Matt O'Riley and Luis Palma.

Sunderland just won’t want to be left behind in the ongoing automatic promotion race, with signings such as Palma no doubt boosting their attack ahead of some crunch months to come in the intense Championship.

Tottenham could sign colossal 6 foot 6 centre-back for just £14m in January

Tottenham Hotspur have expressed their interest in signing a new centre-back who they could get for a relatively cheap fee, with manager Ange Postecoglou making moves to reinforce his disjointed backline.

The matches are coming thick and fast for Spurs, and they’ll have to play most of them minus van de Ven, Romero and Davies, with Postecoglou confirming that the three senior defenders won’t return until late January.

“Yeah, at this stage, Richy and Mikey will be the next two off the rank,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham team news before their clash with Newcastle.

“Hopefully next week at some point, and then Ben, Micky van de Van and Romero, all kind of around the same time, so that back end of January, they’re all sort of slated to return.”

While Tottenham are closing in on a deal for Slavia Prague goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, their lack of options in defence has prompted many reports that Spurs could look to bring in another centre-half as well before the end of this month, and many interesting names have been linked.

RC Lens starlet Abdukodir Khusanov, Leeds United star Pascal Struijk, Feyenoord stalwart David Hancko, PSG’s Milan Skriniar, Getafe’s Omar Alderete, Inter Milan sensation Yann Bisseck and Borussia Mönchengladbach stalwart Ko Itakura are all centre-backs reportedly on Tottenham’s radar, as technical director Johan Lange seeks to bolster Postecoglou’s back line.

Itakura could be available at a cut-price for Spurs in January, as his contract expires in the summer of 2026, so the Japan international could be an attractive option.

Tottenham could sign Udinese defender Kristensen for just £14 million

However, he isn’t their only prudent target, as it is believed Udinese colossus Thomas Kristensen is attracting serious interest from N17.

That is according to Messaggero Veneto, as translated by Sport Witness, who claim that Tottenham are eyeing a January move for Kristensen, and his club are prepared to let him leave this month for just £14 million.

Thomas Kristensen for Udinese.

The 6 foot 6 Denmark Under-21 international was one of Udinese’s best-performing players by average match rating throughout the entirety of 2023/2024, according to WhoScored, and his age indicates that there is scope for him to improve even more.

Once van de Ven and Romero return, he would also have to contend with a more bit-part role, so Spurs won’t want to splash the cash on a too illustrious defender in a bid not to upset the apple cart. However, they do face competition from Leicester City to secure a deal for the Dane.
