Goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah had overturned an early opener by Everton’s Beto, putting the Reds on course for victory. However, in the 98th minute, defender James Tarkowski produced a stunning finish past Alisson, snatching a point for Everton.

The goal was a significant moment in the title race, as it meant Liverpool dropped two points, giving Arsenal a lifeline in their pursuit of the top spot. However, while thousands of Everton fans erupted in joy, Arteta was unaware of what had just happened.

WHAT ARTETA SAID

Speaking about the match, Arteta admitted he was watching the game on his iPad when, at the most crucial moment, his connection failed.

"I'd better not tell you the story of what happened," Arteta told reporters. "No, no, no. It was a funny one because I lost connection in that moment. I was watching the iPad, and I lost the connection. We didn't know exactly what was going on.

"That's the beauty of football, that uncertainty and the fact that for everybody, and it's not the first time, for everybody it's really difficult to win matches in this league. That's why always the hope and the ambition is there because to do it consistently for 10 months is a very, very, very long league."

While the late goal gave Everton a reason to celebrate, the aftermath saw heated confrontations between both sets of players. Abdoulaye Doucoure taunted the Liverpool away fans, which provoked a response from Reds academy graduate Curtis Jones. The situation quickly escalated into a pushing and shoving altercation, forcing referee Michael Oliver to intervene.

Both Doucoure and Jones were given marching orders, resulting in suspensions. Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Arne Slot was also sent off after the final whistle for his protests against the officiating. Slot, Liverpool and Everton have all been charged by the Football Association.

49ers now in sit down talks over Leeds 20 y/o who’s training with York City

Leeds United could allow an in-form youngster to leave Elland Road on loan before the weekend, according to a new update.

Leeds transfer rumours

The transfer market may not be officially open again until January, however, the Whites can still sign free agents and use the loan market for non-league clubs, should they wish.

Daniel Farke and the 49ers Enterprises could dip into the free agent market following serious injuries to midfielders Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev, leaving Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell as his only senior midfield options. At the back, Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk are the only defenders fit due to Max Wober’s injury, which has resulted in Cheikhou Kouyate being linked with joining Leeds.

Reports have claimed a deal to be on and off in recent days, and when asked about Leeds signing Kouyate, Farke refused to confirm the name but did say the club are optimistic they will find “a good solution in the upcoming days or weeks”.

“I spoke about the situation. I never confirm any names and I won’t speak about players who are not under contract with us. I just speak about our players.

“We’re having a deeper look into the free agent market. We are also a bit light in the centre-back position, Joe Rodon is on four yellow cards.

“We have a few ideas and we’re carefully optimistic we’ll be able to bring in a good solution in the upcoming days or weeks, but I cannot say names.”

Leeds youngster Luca Thomas could join York City

Heading out of Leeds in the coming days could be young forward Luca Thomas, with National League side York City hopeful of signing the Whites gem on loan.

The 20-year-old has scored eight goals for Leeds’ youngsters in the current campaign and even made a cameo with the senior squad under Farke during pre-season.

York City boss Adam Hinshelwood commented on Thomas and a move from Leeds, revealing the 49ers Group are set for sit down talks on Thursday over a deal.

“Leeds have let him train with us for the last few days, so we can cast an eye over him, and we have done that. We’ve been impressed with what we have seen, so it’s down to us to have a chat with Tony [McMahon, Director of Football] and then speak to Leeds and see what is best.

“We’ve been really encouraged by what we have seen from him and we’re hoping that we will be able to do something there. We’re hoping, he’s been in for a few days and have liked what we have seen so far, so we will sit down with Tony tomorrow (Thursday) and speak to Leeds to see what we can try and arrange.”

Thomas has even been mentioned by some as a player who could become Leeds’ next Crysencio Summerville, so his development will be one to watch if he joins York on loan.

The Argentine could very well end up staying at Manchester United as Garnacho has not been outcast by Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, unlike Marcus Rashford. However, if Chelsea do plan to reach United's valuation, the move could very well go through this month.

Worth more than McCowan: Celtic hit the jackpot with "immense" star

Celtic maintained their perfect start to the 2024/25 Scottish Premiership season with a convincing and comfortable 3-0 win in the first Old Firm clash of the campaign.

Brendan Rodgers brought Kyogo Furuhashi and Nicolas Kuhn back into the starting XI for the Hoops and the former, in particular, enjoyed an impressive afternoon.

The Japan international was unfortunate to have an early goal ruled out due to a toenail offside decision on Kuhn in the build-up but did eventually get his name on the scoresheet for the second goal, firing in past Jack Butland with a clever, driven, effort from 25 yards.

Daizen Maeda and Callum McGregor scored either side of that long-distance strike from the former Vissel Kobe marksman, who had not scored in the league prior to Sunday's clash.

The dominant win over Rangers also came less than 48 hours after a busy deadline day for the Premiership champions, who added three new players to their squad.

Arne Engels was brought in from Bundesliga side Augsburg, central defender Auston Trusty was signed from Sheffield United, and midfielder Luke McCowan was snapped up from fellow Scottish outfit Dundee.

How much Celtic paid for Luke McCowan

Rodgers moved to improve his options in the middle of the park on deadline day and made a late swoop to bring in the left-footed star for a reported fee of just £1m.

That could end up being a bargain for the Scottish giants if he is able to translate his superb form for Dundee over the last 13 months or so over to his spell at Parkhead.

He had started the current campaign in impressive fashion with a return of two goals and one assist in three Premiership outings, to go along with 3.8 tackles and interceptions per game.

The 26-year-old midfielder, who made his debut off the bench in the 3-0 win over Rangers, had also outperformed a number of Celtic players in his position as an attacking presence last season.

As you can see in the table above, McCowan was directly involved in 15 goals for Dundee – at least seven more than McGregor, Hatate, or Bernardo managed.

This suggests that the Scottish gem has the potential to provide a huge threat in the final third for the Hoops if he can hit the ground running and showcase the best of his abilities in Glasgow this term.

McCowan was a boyhood Celtic supporter and that meant it was a lovely moment when he got to make his debut as a substitute in the Old Firm.

Celtic will be hoping to hit the jackpot with the £1m signing of the midfielder, just like Ange Postecoglou did with the bargain signing of Maeda, who starred on Sunday and is currently worth more than McCowan.

How much Celtic paid for Daizen Maeda

Postecoglou swooped to sign the Japan international from Yokohama F. M. on an initial loan deal for the season half of the 2021/22 season.

Maeda hit the ground running in Glasgow with a return of seven goals and one assist in 17 appearances in all competitions, as the Hoops won the Premiership title.

The Scottish giants then reportedly splashed out a fee of just £1.6m to sign the forward on a permanent basis ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

In his first full season with the Premiership giants, Maeda racked up an eye-catching 11 goals and seven assists in all competitions for Postecoglou's side.

As you can see in the table above, 13 of those goal contributions came in the Scottish top-flight, which shows that he provided a decent threat in the final third.

The 26-year-old attacker showcased his ability to score and create goals from a left wing position, using his relentless work rate and lightning-quick pace to cause constant problems for opposition defenders.

He continued to provide a strong presence at the top end of the pitch for Rodgers last season and his current market valuation is a reflection of the blinder Postecoglou played and the value the gem provides on the pitch.

Daizen Maeda's current market value

At the time of writing (03/09/2024), Transfermarkt places the Japanese winger's current market value at €7m (£5.9m), and that is significantly higher than the £1.6m they paid for him just over two years ago.

This shows that Postecoglou hit the jackpot when he swooped to sign the attacker back in 2022, who is now worth £4.9m more than the £1m signing of McCowan this summer.

Celtic's Daizen Maeda.

Maeda did not enjoy his best season in front of goal for the Hoops last term under Rodgers but did still contribute with six goals and three assists in 28 Premiership matches.

The Japan international brings more than just goals and assists to the table, however, as the Northern Irish head coach claimed that he has the "work rate of two players" on the pitch.

He has also enjoyed a terrific start to the current campaign for the Premiership champions, with a return of three goals and two assists in four appearances in all competitions, with all five of those contributions coming in the last three games.

The Celtic star, who was once hailed as "immense" by Postecoglou, caught the eye with his exceptional display in the Old Firm clash on Sunday.

Maeda opened the scoring from Alistair Johnston's cut-back as he was on his toes and able to anticipate the cross to get to the ball before James Tavernier and then had the composure to find the back of the net.

The winger also assisted the third goal for McGregor with a pass to his captain, who then rocketed a strike into the far corner from distance in the second half.

Celtic are being rinsed by a player who earns 2x more than Scales

The Hoops appear to have blundered by signing the central defender last summer.

Matt Critchley benefits from last-ball drop as Nottinghamshire tie again

Derbyshire slide from 68 for 0 chasing small target before Sol Budinger mistake leaves scores level

Luis Reece struck 51 but Derbyshire couldn’t capitalise•Getty Images

Sol Budinger let the chance of a dramatic victory slip through his hands as Notts Outlaws tied with Derbyshire Falcons in a pulsating Vitality Blast game at Derby.Derbyshire needed five off the last ball from Calvin Harrison which skipper Matt Critchley drove to long-on but Budinger dropped the catch and the ball squirted behind him for four to leave the teams level on 137 for 9.The Falcons were cruising at 68 for 0 but collapsed to 129 for 9 and Harrison’s nerveless last over looked to have won it until Budinger’s fumble. They had restricted Notts to 137 for 9 on a slow pitch with legspinner Mattie McKiernan taking 3 for 9 and Logan van Beek recovering from conceding 21 in his first over to claim 2 for 36.Notts had set off like a train with Joe Clarke taking five fours from van Beek’s opening over but Derbyshire held their nerve. Alex Hales was bowled first ball by Conor McKerr and van Beek returned to have Clarke caught at deep square leg.Ben Duckett mistimed a pull to mid off as the Outlaws ended the Powerplay on 58 for 3 and wickets continued to fall to a combination of good bowling and ill-judged shots.Budinger sliced a pull to point the next ball after he was dropped on the midwicket boundary and Samit Patel was lbw to Critchley. McKiernan struck twice in his first over as Tom Moores pulled to deep midwicket and Harrison was bowled to leave the Outlaws on 86 for 7.Luke Fletcher skied McKiernan to point and although Steven Mullaney pulled van Beek for six, he sliced the next ball to cover.Jake Ball and Matt Carter took 25 from the last three overs but Luis Reece threatened to win it at a canter by racing to 51 off 30 balls. But his dismissal reverse-sweeping Patel was the first of four wickets to fall for seven runs, before Critchley and Fynn Hudson-Prentice took Derbyshire to within 10 runs of victory.Harrison and Fletcher both struck twice to leave Derbyshire needing eight off the last over and the Outlaws appeared to have stolen it until Budinger’s mistake consigned them to a third tie in the North Group.

Ten Hag stood in the way of 2 late Man Utd exits after McTominay exit

Following Scott McTominay's departure to join Napoli late on in the transfer window, Erik ten Hag reportedly stood in the way of a further two Manchester United departures.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils were one of the busier Premier League clubs in the summer transfer window, rounding off their business on deadline day by welcoming Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain after a lengthy saga. The defensive midfielder arrived in a deal reportedly worth as much as £50.5m with add-ons and should instantly ease United's issues in the middle of the park.

Expressing his delight after finally completing his move to Old Trafford, Ugarte told the club's official website: "It is an incredible feeling to join a club of this magnitude; one that is admired all around the world. The project that the football leadership discussed with me is extremely exciting; Manchester United is an ambitious club and I am an ambitious player."

However, as one midfielder arrived, another left in the form of McTominay, who swapped his boyhood club for the Italian Serie A and Napoli in a deal reportedly worth €30m (£25m) late in the window. The Scotland international bid an emotional farewell to United after graduating from the academy and enjoying several moments in the spotlight.

Following his exit, more departures looked on the cards before Ten Hag seemingly intervened. According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United rejected loan offers from Real Betis for both Antony and Christian Eriksen, with Ten Hag seeing a place for both in his current squad at Old Trafford.

Of course, if you factor in Jadon Sancho's departure to Chelsea on top of McTominay's to Napoli, it's clear to see why Ten Hag still needs the duo involved in the current campaign.

Antony given beacon of hope at Man Utd

Sancho's exit has seemingly handed Antony the chance to revive his Manchester United career and divert from what is currently a one-way trip to going down as one of the biggest transfer flops in Premier League history. Costing the Red Devils as much as a reported £81.3m, the Brazilian has far from lived up to expectations and a loan move away may have sealed his fate.

16 goal involvements in 83 appearances paints a strikingly accurate picture as to just how Antony's time at Manchester United has gone. Still in Ten Hag's plans, nonetheless, it's now or never for the 24-year-old to discover his best form.

Eriksen, meanwhile, is an unexpected part of the Dutchman's setup. At 32 years old, it wouldn't be absurd to suggest that the Dane is gradually moving past his best, and with his contract at the club coming to an end next summer, United perhaps should have used the remaining days of the window to cash in.

Like Antony though, Eriksen's long-term future may still be away from Old Trafford even after staying put this summer.

Tom Moody appointed as Sri Lanka's director of cricket

The role will have Moody overseeing Sri Lanka’s international programme and domestic tournaments

Andrew Fidel Fernando01-Mar-2021Tom Moody has been appointed Sri Lanka’s director of cricket, a broad new role that will have Moody overseeing Sri Lanka’s international programme and domestic tournaments. The appointment was made on the recommendation of Sri Lanka’s new technical advisory committee headed by Aravinda de Silva. The role will see Moody spend at least 300 days in Sri Lanka over the next three years focusing on “analysis of the future tour programme, focusing on the domestic tournament structure, player welfare, education and skill development, coaching and support staff structure, high performance, and data analytics”.Moody had been Sri Lanka’s coach between 2005 and 2007 – years in which Sri Lanka tasted considerable success in the Test format and became World Cup runners-up. Since then he has been a coach at the IPL, the Caribbean Premier League’s director of cricket and has had several other high-profile positions.”Tom has worked with Sri Lanka Cricket in the past and has shown results, and I am sure with his working knowledge of the system, Tom will add greater value to our game,” SLC’s CEO Ashley de Silva said.On why Moody was specifically sought out for the role, Aravinda had told ESPNcricinfo that his committee needed “someone responsible and neutral working on certain areas with an open mind, who understands the culture, the players, the country’s culture, someone who’s been around. We need to blend and get the administrative side as well as the cricketing side.”Tom has got a lot of experience and understands more things about what some of the other countries are doing right, and we need to get the best things out of those countries that will suit our culture and then implement those.”Kumar Sangakkara and Muttiah Muralitharan, who played under Moody during his tenure as coach, are also on the advisory committee.Moody starts his role on March 1. Arteta targeting four key signings at Arsenal this summer

Mikel Arteta is aiming to make it third-time lucky next season in Arsenal's mission to beat Man City to the Premier League crown, having narrowly lost out to the Sky Blues in two of their most recent title races.

Arteta wants £200,000-per-week star at Arsenal more than any other forward

The Gunners boss has his number-one preference.

Jul 10, 2024

Arsenal pushed City to the final day last campaign and accumulated an impressive 89 points, which would've been enough to win the league in the vast majority of Premier League seasons previously.

However, Pep Guardiola has set a very high bar and one which Arteta's side must match. The north Londoners are set to begin their pre-season preparations soon with a friendly tour of the USA, which commences in Los Angeles on July 24 against Bournemouth.

Arsenal are also believed to be targeting four key signings before the summer transfer window closes, with the possible additions of a new goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward (Simon Collings).

Arsenal will hope to have wrapped up a deal for Bologna starlet Riccardo Calafiori by that point, as reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano claims Arsenal are closing in on a deal for the Italian after agreeing personal terms.

Edu and the wider recruitment team will also be optimistic about trimming the squad by that date as well. Many members of Arteta's squad face uncertain futures, like goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who has been widely tipped to leave after losing his number one spot to David Raya.

"It’s a matter of when Ramsdale leaves, not if," said reliable Arsenal correspondent Charles Watts recently.

“The key thing for Arsenal is getting value for money. I saw an initial fee of £15 million mentioned in reports last week and that is quite frankly ridiculous. Arsenal signed Ramsdale for nearly £30m two years ago and he has developed into a far better keeper since then."

The goalkeeping department could see a slight reshuffle, but even if Ramsdale stays, there is a belief that Arsenal want to bring in former player Daniel Bentley from Wolves as a third-choice, 15 years after he left the academy.

Arsenal submit opening bid for Bentley as Wolves respond

According to reliable journalist David Ornstein, sharing news on The Athletic's live blog this week [July 10, 08:12], Arsenal have now submitted an opening bid to sign Bentley from Wolves.

Daniel Bentley on Premier League debut.

However, Edu and co will be disappointed, as it has been rejected out of hand. Wolves deemed the offer "considerably short" of their valuation for the 30-year-old, and will only consider selling for a suitable proposal.

The 6 foot 2 shot-stopper is rumoured to command a price tag of around £1 million, according to Alan Nixon, so Arsenal wouldn't exactly have to push the boat out for a player who "works his socks off" according to Gary O'Neil.
