The Great Upset: Afghanistan bring World Cup to life with England conquest

The bowling pack, led by Mujeeb Ur Rahman, stopped England 69 short after Rahmanullah Gurbaz led them to a competitive 284

Andrew Miller15-Oct-20231:22

‘Gurbaz is gutsy, brave and aggressive’

Afghanistan claimed the most famous scalp of their international history, and in the process provided the first big shock of the 2023 World Cup, by routing England’s world champions by 69 runs in a spin-and-seam masterclass under the Delhi floodlights.Their dominance was set in motion by a fearless display of power-hitting from the 21-year-old Rahmanullah Gurbaz, whose 80 from 57 had promised so much more until a run-out sawed him off in his prime. But Ikram Alikhil marshalled Afghanistan’s lower-order with a precious half-century in his first game of this year’s World Cup, whereupon they set about making a target of 285 seem as dim and distant as England’s hopes of defending their title must now feel.Gurbaz reprimanded for equipment abuse

Rahmanullah Gurbaz was officially reprimanded for hitting the boundary rope and a chair with his bat after being dismissed in the 19th over of Afghanistan’s innings. He has received one demerit point for the same, his first in a 24-month period.
When a player reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points and a player is banned. Each demerit point stays on a player’s record for 24 months from their imposition.

If, after winning the toss and choosing to chase, England had assumed the second half of the match would be a cakewalk to match the 283 target that New Zealand had waltzed past in their tournament opener, those notions were scotched during a startlingly attacking powerplay from their opponents.Jos Buttler’s decision to bat second had seemingly been influenced by the likelihood that the ball would skid on to the bat under the floodlights. But instead, the evening conditions merely exacerbated the natural attributes of each of Afghanistan’s bowlers, not least Fazalhaq Farooqi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, right from the outset of their innings.Farooqi’s loosener was more than enough to cause a few sideways glances in the England dressing-room, a wicked full-length inswinger from his zippy left-arm line pinned Jonny Bairstow on the crease and extracted a perfectly justifiable on-field verdict from Rod Tucker, irrespective of Bairstow’s stinkeye as he stalked from the crease after a seam’s-width DRS verdict.Mohammad Nabi, playing his 150th ODI out of a possible 156 for his country, put on a masterclass in flight, drift and dip•Associated Press

But no such second-guessing was required for England’s second victim of the powerplay: Joe Root, squared up by Mujeeb’s front-of-the-hand slider, and bowled for 11 from 17 – yet another telling powerplay failure for England’s faltering kingpin – as the ball kept low to rattle middle and off.Not for the first time, Dawid Malan was the most composed batter on show, his 32 from 39 balls singlehandedly dragging England through the powerplay without further loss. But Mohammad Nabi, playing his 150th ODI out of a possible 156 for his country, was waiting for him as the fielding restrictions lifted. Nabi’s fourth ball was a moment of offspinning poetry – a flighted, dipping delivery that made Malan believe his fifth boundary was on the cards, only for Ibrahim Zadran to spring the trap at short cover. At 68 for 3 in the 13th over, the alarm bells were ringing.Buttler’s exhortation in recent weeks has been to “attack”… but even he was powerless to practice what he had preached in such invidious circumstances. His only shot in anger was a pointed one, a bullet drive through the covers as Afghanistan’s main threat Rashid Khan entered the attack in the 17th over. But Naveen-ul-Haq’s fiercely flicked seamers seemed to spook him from the outset, and after being beaten twice in his first four balls, he drove without conviction through a booming inswinger, and had his stumps splattered for 9 from 18.England’s diffidence thereafter was startling. Liam Livingstone never looked settled in his 10 from 14, eventually planting his front foot down the line to Rashid and burning a futile review in the process. Sam Curran seemed focussed solely on holding up an end while Harry Brook got busy with a fighting half-century, including a handful of exquisite drives down the ground, and in the 31st over, England’s first and only six of the innings, which told a tale – especially when set against the previous World Cup meeting between these teams. Afghanistan by contrast had launched eight. With Curran on 10 from 23 balls, Nabi – armed quite rightly with a slip – returned with another collector’s item to collect another left-hander, as Curran poked limply at a dipping offbreak and fenced low to Rahmat Shah. And it was only once the result was a foregone conclusion that England finally broke out of their defeatist mindset, with Reece Topley’s three fours in a row off Farooqi proving to be among the cleanest strikes of a flat-lining display.1:13

How did England’s bowling unit perform against Afghanistan?

It was a crushing victory by any standards, but the gulf between Afghanistan’s attacking mindset and England’s muddled approach was even more vast than the final result made it out to be.And it was Gurbaz’s mini-masterpiece that set the tone for his team. Presented with a surface on which South Africa’s batters had posted three centuries in last week’s World Cup record 428 for 5, he climbed on to the offensive, particularly against another timid new-ball spell from Chris Woakes, whose search for form has epitomised England’s uncertain start to their title defence.Woakes’ first ball of the match was a wild sighter that flew away through Buttler’s legs for five wides, and Afghanistan scarcely needed any more encouragement to put the hammer down on such a visibly weak link in England’s attack. In his second over, a premeditated hack from Gurbaz through the line persuaded Woakes to drag his length back, and Gurbaz was waiting with the sucker punch, a vicious slammed pull over deep square-leg for six.Two more fours followed in Woakes’ next over, lashed through the covers as he failed to land his cutters, and though Topley at the other end was proving more frugal with his high-kicking left-arm seam, Gurbaz had utter faith in the true nature of the pitch, and twice climbed through an offering of width across his bows with a brace of savage cuts.Curran replaced Woakes but fared little better. Gurbaz demolished his second over, which disappeared for 20 with two more fours and another muscular six over midwicket to close out Afghanistan’s powerplay on an ominous 79 for 0. He duly brought up his fifty from 33 balls, the fourth fastest of the tournament to date, with a calculated sweep for four off Adil Rashid’s second ball.Mujeeb Ur Rahman walked in and smashed the England bowlers around from the get-go•Getty Images

England’s concerns had deeper to go before they could improve. Mark Wood was rapid from the outset of his spell, but a misdirected bouncer was jemmied up and over deep third with a flick of the wrists, before Gurbaz nailed his fourth six – and arguably the best of the lot: an effortless pick-up over deep midwicket as Rashid looped a legbreak into his arc. And when the injury-plagued Topley jarred his knee while failing to cut off another pull through fine leg, and limped off for treatment, the concerns in the England camp, and for his father Don sitting up in the stands, were plain to see.Topley returned in due course, however, by which stage it seemed that Afghanistan’s innings had imploded in a familiar flurry of self-destruction. After playing out a maiden against Rashid, Ibrahim Zadran picked out Root with a head-high clip to midwicket, and before he could settle, Rahmat was dragged out of his crease in Rashid’s next over, to be smartly stumped by Buttler for 3 from eight balls. And then… catastrophe.Hashmatullah Shahidi nudged his first ball to midwicket and set off for a unthinking single, and Gurbaz was barely in the frame as the shy came in from midwicket. He stalked off the pitch, utterly livid with himself and his captain, smashing his bat on the boundary marker and a passing chair as he did so, knowing full well that those blows could and should have been meted out on England’s toiling bowlers instead. But even as Afghanistan struggled to regroup, the seeds of England’s downfall were plain to see. Liam Livingstone settled into an excellent mid-innings holding role, completing a full ten-over spell for the first time in his ODI career, while Root was also a handful with his offbreaks as he bowled Shahidi for a becalmed 14 from 36.But at 174 for 5, there would be no surrender in spite of Afghanistan’s awkward scoreline. Alikhil anchored the tail as Rashid and Mujeeb took what lumps they could out of England’s bowling, and by the time Curran’s final over had been launched for two fours and a free-hit six, he and Woakes had leaked the combined figures of 8-0-87-0. In the final analysis, those were the margins that could not be managed, as Afghanistan delivered on their pre-match promise to offer some “joy” to their country in the wake of last week’s earthquake. They could not have delivered more.

BCCI president Binny, vice-president Shukla to visit Pakistan for Asia Cup

Roger Binny, the BCCI president, will travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup as a board representative at an official PCB dinner in Lahore to commemorate their hosting of the tournament, along with Sri Lanka. An official invitation was extended by Zaka Ashraf, the current PCB managing committee chairman, to the top brass of the BCCI on August 15. ESPNcricinfo has learnt that all top board members from the participating teams, including the BCCI, have confirmed their attendance.Binny will be accompanied by board vice-president Rajiv Shukla to Lahore via the Wagah Border a day or two after they return from Sri Lanka where they will be in attendance at the India-Pakistan fixture in Pallekele.Related

Binny’s confirmation comes at a time when both boards have been at loggerheads on several matters, a direct fallout of the political tensions between the two countries. However, earlier this month, the Pakistan government ended months of uncertainty by giving clearance to the PCB to travel to India for the upcoming ODI World Cup.ESPNcricinfo has learnt Binny’s is merely a courtesy visit and, as things stand, there are no official meetings lined up between the respective board heads. It is likely Binny and Shukla will also attend a match at the Gaddafi Stadium on September 3 or 5 as part of their two-day visit.Pakistan, the hosts of the tournament, have been allotted just four of the 13 games after the BCCI expressed its inability to tour the country. This led to several flashpoints before a compromise was reached with the Asian Cricket Council, chaired by Jay Shah, who is also BCCI secretary, to sign off on a hybrid model.India and Pakistan have been grouped together along with Nepal in the six-nation Asia Cup that begins on August 30. Both teams could play a maximum of three times should they reach the final.

Craig Overton stars as Somerset hand Hampshire vengeful defeat

Champions bowled out for their lowest T20 total of 74 as Ben Green, Matt Henry, Lewis Gregory chime in

Revenge was sweet for Somerset as seamers Craig Overton and Matt Henry led them to a crushing eight-wicket Vitality Blast victory over reigning champions Hampshire Hawks at sun-drenched Taunton.Beaten in last season’s semi-finals by the same opponents, the hosts dominated from the start after winning the toss, Overton claiming 3 for 8 from four overs and Henry 2 for 19 from three to leave the Hawks 27 for 5.The Blast title holders never recovered and were bowled out for 74, their lowest ever T20 total, in 16.1 overs, Ben Green taking 3 for 11 and Lewis Gregory 2 for 13, while Overton added four catches to his heroics with the ball.It was a ruthless display by the Somerset seamers, backed by some razor-sharp fielding. In reply, the hosts breezed to 74 for 2 off just 9.3 overs, Tom Banton smiting 40 off 24 balls.Overton and Henry appeared to be trying to outshine each other when the Hawks innings began in front of a packed crowd, both maintaining excellent line and length.Sam McDermott fell to the last ball of Overton’s opening over, caught two-handed to his left by Tom Kohler-Cadmore at slip.It was 9 for 2 when Henry struck with his first delivery, bowling James Vince between bat and pad with a ball that nipped back. The New Zealand Test bowler then had Joe Weatherly caught at mid-on by Overton off a skyer to make it 12 for 3 in the fourth over.By the end of the six-over powerplay, the Hawks were in disarray at 26 for 3. Their plight worsened when Overton had Tom Priest caught behind attempting to pull a short ball.Overton notched his third victim in the same over as Toby Albert was also snaffled by wicketkeeper Banton, going hard at a wide delivery.Albert had scooped a six off Henry, but it was a rare moment of defiance from the Hawks as Overton produced 17 dot balls in bowling his allotted four overs straight through from the River End.Rightly impressed by his opening attack, Somerset skipper Tom Abell did not make a change until the eighth over, which saw Peter Siddle replace Henry.Ross Whiteley hit fours off successive balls from Gregory and Liam Dawson pulled a a six off Green as Hampshire briefly threatened a recovery. But, having helped take the score to 57, Dawson fell to another Overton catch, this time at fine leg off a scoop, and Scott Currie went in the same Gregory over, the 12th of the innings, bowled off a bottom edged pull shot.Whiteley had reached his side’s top score of 18 when caught by Kohler-Cadmore, diving forward at long-off, having made decent contact with a Green full toss.At 61 for 8, the Hawks were down and out. Chris Wood was pouched by the diving Overton at mid-off off Green, who completed the rout by having Nathan Ellis, who had taken 13 off Henry’s final over, caught at long-on by the same fielder.Somerset’s big-hitting batting line-up were never likely to be troubled chasing such a paltry total and Banton soon signalled his intentions to end the match early by clearing the ropes with a ramp shot off Wood in the third over.A scoop off Ellis brought the England T20 international another boundary, followed next ball by a clip through the leg side for four. Will Smeed was caught at short third man for 5 in the same over, but by the end of their power play, Somerset were comfortable at 37 for 1.Banton launched another six over mid-wicket off Dawson before being stumped in the same over chasing a wide one. Kohler-Cadmore (18 not out) got off the mark by smashing the spinner over wide long-on for a maximum and by then the outcome had long been beyond doubt.

Everton hit the jackpot by selling their original Gordon for 1,567% profit

Everton are primed for a new era at Bramley Moore.

The bygone Farhad Moshiri chapter is concluded, the page turned. David Moyes’ return and seemingly agreeable start with The Friedkin Group, who have granted him significant transfer powers, beyond that of his predecessors at Everton, suggests real progress could be on the cards.

Everton manager David Moyes before Brighton match

While Moyes will be looking to add some quality to his first team, he’ll also need to part ways with certain peripheral members.

Everton won’t want to lose too many though. Memories of Anthony Gordon’s start to life at the club, and subsequent departure, are still fresh, with no love lost between the respective parties.

Anthony Gordon's rise at Everton

Cashing in on up-and-coming stars is plainly a part of football. But it can hurt. During Moyes’ first stint as Goodison Park boss, Everton reluctantly sold 18-year-old academy talent Wayne Rooney to Manchester United for £27m.

Wayne Rooney's Manchester United record (timeless)

Likewise, Gordon’s acrimonious force-out in January 2023 was a bitter pill to swallow. Newcastle signed the talented winger for £45m when he was in the fledgling phase of his career, and he is jeered upon every miserable return to his former stomping ground.

After all, the 23-year-old had been at Finch Farm since his formative years, playing regularly for the U18s and U21s before being handed his professional debut by Sam Allardyce – in the Europa League – when he was only 16 years old.

He made 78 appearances for Everton’s first team, scoring just seven goals and providing only eight assists. Still, he was a “frightening” prospect, as hailed by Boreham Wood boss Luke Garrard, and there’s a lingering sense he had plenty more to offer to the club which birthed him.

However, sometimes cashing in is the right thing to do. Indeed, Everton hit gold selling one exciting up-and-comer in 2017, banking the biggest amount of them all.

Everton struck gold with their original Anthony Gordon

Everton’s woes over the past several seasons, skirting close to the dreaded drop zone, are not a by-product of selling one talented young centre-back, even though his sale back in 2016 was a poignant thing.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

And though he’s since forged an illustrious career, a deeper dive corroborates the claim it was the right thing.

John Stones wasn’t a member of Everton’s respected academy, instead signed from Barnsley for just £3m in 2013, when he was only 18 years old.

He’d taken prodigious steps onto the senior stage in the Championship, featuring 22 times in the first half of the 2012/13 season before his move to Merseyside, but had to bide his time until making his name among the seniors.

Curiously, it was Moyes who welcomed him to Everton in the first place.

There’s no question the Scottish tactician has an eye for a top talent, for Stones went on to perform 95 times for Everton before leaving at the tender age of 22.

The money offered by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City was simply irresistible. City, in the nascent phase of their rebuilding process under the renowned Spaniard, snapped Stones up for a jaw-dropping £50m fee, which made him the most expensive defender in English history.

In just three years, Everton made an incredible £47m profit on a young defender who has since lived up to the hype but has simultaneously been blighted, incessantly, by injury problems.

Remarkably, the 30-year-old is playing out his ninth year with the Citizens and has never hit 30 Premier League appearances in a single campaign.

When considering the 1,567% profit that the Blues banked for this young defender, it’s hard to claim it was a terrible loss, especially when they stayed afloat in the immediate aftermath.

Of course, Stones has won six Premier League titles, the Champions League, and a host of further major honours besides, but Everton must be pretty pleased with their business when looking back, even though Stones was described by Three Lions teammate Ezri Konsa last year as a “world-class” player. At his best, for sure, this is true.

It could have been different. In 2015, one year before Stones moved to Manchester, Everton rejected a transfer request from the young star when Chelsea were looking to snap him up.

Late Everton chairman Bill Kenwright rebuffed three official bids for the Englishman, whose head had been turned, with the third totalling £30m. This proved to be good business since City came calling with even more moneyed words one year later.

In a way, this makes Stones the original Gordon, who also forced his way out of Merseyside. Though Gordon is one of the most talented wingers in the Premier League, he’s hardly missed by his former fanbase.

Given Gordon admitted over eight years after Stones’ sale that a move to Stamford Bridge was “quite close” before he eventually signed for Newcastle, further similarities can be drawn.

Anthony Gordon celebrates for Newcastle

Everton cashed in at the perfect time. Stones is a wonderful footballer but his injury problems throughout his career would have seen his stock fall, had he stayed put.

Indeed, the three campaigns following Stones’ sale before the 2016/17 term still hold the record finishes (7th, 8th and 8th) since 2013/14, Roberto Martinez’s maiden season.

Everton might have been wasteful spenders for most of the Moshiri era, but this was one deal that proved worthwhile, with investment turned back toward the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Idrissa Gueye, and Ashley Williams, who was initially an able replacement, and much cheaper at that.

Not just Isak: Liverpool think Newcastle ace can start for them immediately

Liverpool are pushing to sign a “really talented” Premier League player in the summer transfer window, according to a new update regarding the Reds’ upcoming business.

Liverpool targeting new full-backs

Arne Slot’s side are preparing for another massive game on Wednesday evening as they host Newcastle United at Anfield in the league, looking to keep up their stranglehold on the title.

Last Sunday’s 2-0 win away to Manchester City felt like a significant moment in the season, especially because Arsenal lost 1-0 at home to West Ham the previous day, but there is still work to do for Liverpool, and the Magpies will be tough opponents to overcome.

In terms of Reds-related transfer news, Flamengo right-back Wesley has been linked with a summer move to Anfield, perhaps being seen as a replacement option for Trent Alexander-Arnold, should he join Real Madrid at the end of the season.

Another rumoured target in that area of the pitch is Jeremie Frimpong, who has excelled for Bayer Leverkusen in recent years, winning the Bundesliga title last season and catching the eye in a wing-back role under Xabi Alonso. The Dutchman has three goals and four assists to his name in the league in 2024/25 to date, as well as a trio of assists in the Champions League.

Liverpool eyeing "really talented" player

The Reds are one of several teams thought to be watching Wednesday’s opponent Alexander Isak, but according to Anfield Watch, Liverpool are also keen on signing Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall this summer, seeing him as a long-term replacement for Andy Robertson. The Englishman is viewed by the Reds hiearchy as someone who could immediately come in and take a first-team place.

Lewis Hall for Newcastle

The £7,000-a-week Hall is enjoying an excellent season for Newcastle, putting himself in a strong position to be named in Thomas Tuchel’s first England season next month, potentially making the left-back spot his own after constant injuries to Luke Shaw.

The 20-year-old provided an assist in the Magpies’ 4-3 win at home to Nottingham Forest last weekend – one of four in the league this season – and Howe lauded him last year: “We have always believed in him and his quality and we have been working really hard with him on his game.

“He’s a really talented lad. He’s got a couple of things to continue working on as all the players have. I believe in him. My vision for him is he will be at Newcastle for many years.”

Still only 20, it is easy to see why Liverpool could consider him a target, with the Englishman bringing both defensive nous and attacking quality – he has averaged two tackles per game in the league this term – and he could be a strong alternative to the likes of Milos Kerkez and Jorrel Hato.

Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool now "really advancing" to make key signing

This is exactly what Reds supporters will want to hear.

Reds supporters will get the opportunity to judge him up close on Wednesday, as he comes up against Mohamed Salah at Anfield, which could be his toughest assignment of the campaign to date.

England hire team chef amid concerns about Test tour catering

The England Test side has been shedding support staff during the early stages of Brendon McCullum’s tenure as head coach. However a new addition has been made for their upcoming tour of Pakistan – a chef. The appointment comes following a debrief of the limited-overs side’s experiences in the country during their seven-match T20I series. The feedback from players and support staff was that the food on offer, particularly at match venues, was not quite up to scratch, with a handful suffering from upset stomachs at certain parts of the tour. The issues encountered were far from drastic: no-one was ill for an extended period of time, and England went on to win 4-3 in an exciting series. However, given the demands of a Test match, not least the back-to-back nature of the three-match series across 21 days in three different locations (Rawalpindi, Multan and Karachi), having someone to oversee food preparation and tailor menus according to specific requirements and tastes throughout felt a necessary controllable to control. Indeed one of Cricket Australia’s few regrets from their successful tour of Pakistan earlier this year was not taking a chef with them. The topic of local cuisine came up during the T20 tour when Moeen Ali, as stand-in captain, waded into the food culture war between Lahore and Karachi, tongue very much in cheek: “Food-wise, I have been a little bit disappointed in Lahore. Karachi was really nice.” With Lahore not on the agenda this time around and Karachi hosting the third Test, those who wish to sample the local delicacies can rest easy.ESPNcricinfo understands Omar Meziane, who worked with the England men’s football team in a similar role during the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020, will assume the role. While the Test team’s move will cater for fussy eaters, it will also make Jack Leach feel more at ease. The left-arm spinner suffers from Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel disease, and takes immunosuppressant medication to manage the illness while being strict about what he eats.Related

On a tour of New Zealand in November 2019, Leach was struck down so severely by food poisoning he ended up being hospitalised and contracted sepsis. Though he was able to make it onto the subsequent Test tour to South Africa, the effects of the previous illness meant he was unable to play any part in proceedings and ended up leaving the tour early.Though this is perhaps the first time the ECB has specifically employed a chef for a tour, they have previous when it comes to food away from home. Ahead of their disastrous 2013-14 Ashes, the Sydney Morning Herald got hold of a dossier entitled “Test catering requirements” which was distributed to all hosting venues. The 82 pages contained 194 recipes ranging from “Moroccan spiced griddled chicken fillets with lime and coriander mayo” to protein-based “banana and peanut bars”, and was described by the as “modern pretentious”. It did England no favours in a crushing 5-0 whitewash.Expect pasta dishes to be a prominent part of the Pakistan menus.

Smith feels primed for big summer despite hip niggle

A minor mishap limited his training but Smith is excited about where his batting is ahead of the Tests

Steven Smith says the technical change that unlocked his “ultimate” batting set-up is made for Test cricket, with only a self-inflicted hip injury slowing him down in Perth.Feeling as good as he did during his prime, Smith had limited involvement at an optional training session on Sunday before Wednesday’s first Test against West Indies. The 33-year-old hit a nerve using his pso-rite, a u-shaped device designed for athletes to help loosen the psoas muscles that run from the lumbar spine to the groin.”It was just me being just silly to be honest,” Smith said. “I was hitting myself in the psoas, trying to loosen that up and I got a little low and I hit a little nerve or something. My hip is a little bit grumbly…but all will be fine.”Related

Beyond that though, Smith is hopeful of settling in for his most prolific summer in years. His technical shift has been a year in the making, after believing he had got his hands right last summer before working on his feet recently. In last month’s ODIs against England, Smith was notably much stiller with his distinctive back-and-across movement gone. The change came after Smith made a point to return his technique to where it was in 2014-15, when he averaged 128.16 against India. In turn, it has prompted Smith to agree with a Greg Chappell column where the former captain said Smith’s changes could make him better than ever.”The reason for the changes in long-form cricket, I felt as if I was getting a bit too front-on on the back foot,” Smith said. “If you’re too front on you can follow the ball if it nips away from you. Or you’re not getting into positions that are where I wanted to be to leave the ball as well.”Where I’ve got to right now is the ultimate for me. I feel like I don’t have to work as hard to access the offside with my body and my hands. I can just play with a nice flow.”The other marker for Smith is in his pull shot. Chappell had suggested Smith’s issues had come after he was floored by Jofra Archer in the 2019 Ashes, with bowlers such as he and Neil Wagner able to follow Smith’s movements. But with his changes, Smith feels as if he has opened up his options on the back foot and is better placed to handle any bouncer barrage.”I was still quite front on [when hit by Archer] and I was only being able to help [pull shots] on their way behind square,” Smith said. “Whereas using power in front of square is something I’ve probably done a bit better throughout my career.”I think when I hit that first pull shot [against England] in Adelaide through midwicket it was kind of like, ‘wow, I’ve actually got my bottom hand back’. And then being in that position where I’m more side-on with short stuff. I feel like I was able to get out of the way of one that Olly Stone bowled really easily.”
