West Brom must ditch a player who earns more than Palmer & Townsend

West Bromwich Albion's season would end ultimately in a disappointing fashion in the Championship playoffs, bowing out as 3-1 losers over two legs as Southampton ran rampant in attack back at St. Mary's after a valiant Baggies display in the first stalemate contest.

Carlos Corberan would be left cursing his lack of potent attacking options in the second match-up on the South Coast, with Jed Wallace starting as the lone striker for the goal-shy visitors despite being more of a natural winger as a wasteful Brandon Thomas-Asante was benched by the Spaniard.

A new striker could well be a priority position for the West Midlands outfit in the summer, therefore, which could result in an injury-prone face being given the boot with his absence from the playoffs being felt by being sidelined yet again.

Josh Maja's time at West Brom

Joining last summer on a free transfer from former employers FC Girondins de Bordeaux, there was plenty expected of Josh Maja on his arrival having set the EFL alight previously with Sunderland.

Maja showed his clinical edge in front of goal for the Wearsiders as a youngster which ended up catching the eye of the Ligue 1 side, bagging 17 goals in a Sunderland strip from 49 games, whilst also firing in three strikes for Fulham in a loan switch away from Bordeaux all the way up in the Premier League.

The warning signs should have been there for the Baggies, however, that Maja could potentially flop owing to recurring bad luck with injuries which saw him frequent the Bordeaux treatment room over and over again.

Sidelined for the majority of 2024 with an ankle ligament issue, the 25-year-old has only managed to find the back of the net once for Corberan's men when fit from a mere 12 first-team games.

There could be a temptation to try and sell on Maja this summer as a result, with his valuation, according to Football Transfers, sitting at a hefty £1.6m despite large patches of no football.

Maja's high wage is also a stumbling block as to why West Brom will want to part ways, with the ex-Sunderland man earning more than both Alex Palmer and Conor Townsend – according to Capology – who were both crucial for the Baggies in getting into the play-offs.

Fulham striker Josh Maja.

Maja's wage at West Brom

Maja managed to rake in a handsome £17k-per-week pay packet this season even with his minutes not being regular, costing the failed play-off side £884k in wage costs alone over a full year.

Palmer and Townsend both earn a lesser £10.9k and £11.5k-per-week respectively, all whilst amassing a ridiculous 94 appearances between them under Corberan this season.

Without Palmer's heroics in the first leg, denying Ross Stewart by instinctively saving the deflected effort above, West Brom would have had even more of a mountain to climb on the South Coast with the reliable shot-stopper ensuring his side kept a clean sheet at the very least.

Townsend was equally important in the games building up to the playoffs, assisting Darnell Furlong's strike on the final day of the season to ensure the Baggies made it into the top six with a 3-0 drubbing of Preston North End.

Yet, both still earn less than Maja and could be pushing for a pay increase to stay put amidst the club's failure to push through into the Premier League.

The ex-Sunderland striker could be offloaded as a result, with West Brom putting down this free transfer capture as a dud buy.

Spurs must bench 4/10 ace who had fewer touches than Vicario vs Newcastle

St James' Park has become a venue that Tottenham Hotspur will now dread attending, with last year's 6-1 defeat being followed by a 4-0 loss this weekend to Newcastle United.

Ange Postecoglou’s side were completely off the pace from minute one, with each away player just an actor in the Anthony Gordon show.

In truth, it was an afternoon to completely forget for the Lilywhites, with defensive mistakes and the blunt attack combining to create an embarrassing outcome.

A handful of Spurs players have been given plenty of criticism for their performances, including Pedro Porro, but there was one individual who was just as bad.

Pedro Porro’s performance against Newcastle

The Spanish right-back has been a reliable performer this season for the Australian, showing defensive security and taking on attacking responsibility, as shown by his seven league assists.

However, his performance against the Magpies was one to forget, with The Evening Standard's Dom Smith handing him a 4/10 rating for his struggles.

The former Sporting star unfortunately played a huge role in Newcastle’s second goal, with an under-hit back pass playing Gordon through on goal, and he was often out of position defensively.

To top off his performance, Porro was substituted just after the break with a hamstring injury, but it’s currently unknown quite how long he’ll be out for.

Bentancur struggled yet again against Newcastle

Rodrigo Bentancur has had to wait patiently for minutes this season, with the midfield duo of Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma often being the first-choice pairing for Postecoglou.

The former Juventus ace’s terrible injury history will not have helped his chances of securing himself a spot in the side, with the midfielder missing 49 games over the last two seasons.

Rodrigo Bentancur warming up for Tottenham

Therefore, the Uruguayan has only started nine Premier League games this campaign, which means that it was important for him to impress against Eddie Howe’s side on Saturday.

However, that unfortunately wasn’t the case, with The Evening Standard also rating Bentancur a 4/10 for his performance, and his statistics certainly suggest he found it difficult to perform, ultimately leaving the field of play with fewer touches than goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicaro (42 vs 51).

From the first minute to the last, Tottenham dominated the tie from a possession perspective, which in theory should have made Bentancur’s afternoon much easier, particularly when on the ball.

But that wasn’t the case, as the number 30 was rather complacent throughout, having a pass accuracy of 83% and losing the ball seven times.

Furthermore, Bentancur also struggled with the intensity of the Newcastle attack and midfield, losing eight duels and being dribbled past on three occasions.

Rodrigo Bentancur.

The fact that he was subbed off just before the hour mark highlighted just how little impact the 26-year-old had on his side, and after that performance, it’s difficult to see him keeping his place in the starting side over the next few weeks.

In truth, Bentancur is still clearly rusty after dealing with his numerous injury setbacks, and his second-half performance against Nottingham Forest also underlined that yesterday's showing wasn't a one-off, as he lost six duels and had a pass accuracy of 84%.

Spurs were let down by 3/10 star who was even worse than Van de Ven

Ange’s side squandered the chance to create some space in the race for top four.

Kusal Mendis ton helps Sri Lanka secure draw and seal series 1-0

Kusal Mendis’ seventh Test century ensured there were no late scares for Sri Lanka as the visitors eked out a draw in the second and final Test in Harare and sealed the series 1-0.For Zimbabwe, they can take heart from a performance that had pushed their more illustrious opponents right throughout the five days, and at times it looked like they might actually secure their first-ever Test win over Sri Lanka. But in the end, while Zimbabwe’s batsman had impressed – especially Brendan Taylor, Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza – their bowling always looked to lack the necessary killer instinct to take ten Sri Lanka wickets in a single day. This, despite Raza having recorded the second-best Test figures for Zimbabwe in the first innings. The only highlight of the final session on the fifth day was Mendis’ century, which he brought up in style – a sumptuous six off Raza, skipping down the track and launching him comfortably over long-on. Mendis ended with an unbeaten 116, five runs short of 3000 Test runs. That latter must wait for another day, but for now, Sri Lanka will reflect on a game in which they were outplayed for vast periods. The final day had started with Williams declaring Zimbabwe’s second innings on 247 for 7 after just one ball: an uncharacteristic leg-stump half-volley by Suranga Lakmal that Sean Williams flicked over deep square leg for six.The shot brought up Williams’ third Test fifty, but more importantly, Zimbabwe got the chance to use the heavy roller on a dry Harare deck at the start of the day. The idea presumably being to widen some of the cracks on the pitch, and give their bowlers a better chance of bowling out a team in the fourth innings of a Test for just the seventh time in their history. And the plan seemed to have worked too, where following a period of tight bowling, Carl Mumba coaxed Dimuth Karunaratne into a false stroke outside off. The batsman tried to pull out at the last moment but not before the ball took the outside edge and went into the wicketkeeper’s gloves. The period following the wicket was one of Zimbabwe’s most threatening, with both Oshada Fernando and Mendis looking uncomfortable against a buoyant home attack. However, in the 24th over Mendis looked to shift gears, picking off Victor Nyauchi for back to back boundaries through midwicket. Fernando joined the party in the next over, taking Williams for three fours – two lofted over mid-on, the third drilled through the covers. While Nyauchi did constantly test the pair during this period, beating the outside edge on a few occasions and inducing it at other times – twice resulting in boundaries down to third man, with another bouncing just in front of first slip – the pair nevertheless made it through to lunch unscathed. The post-lunch session though was a dour affair, yielding just 51 runs for Sri Lanka and a further two wickets for Zimbabwe – effectively ending any lingering hopes of a result.Zimbabwe were, however, given a brief glimmer of hope when Fernando was trapped lbw by Raza in the second over after lunch, and then later when Angelo Mathews was dismissed towards the end of the session – owing to some innovative field settings, that saw short extra-cover, short cover, short mid-off, short mid-on and short midwicket in place at one point – but Mendis, aided by an obdurate Dinesh Chandimal ensured there was no further damage with the teams shaking hands 15 minutes into the final hour.

West Ham set to open transfer talks for 6ft 3 international mainstay

West Ham United will open talks "soon" over the signing of a 6 foot 3 international mainstay after extensive scouting missions to his club.

Steidten's summer transfer plans for West Ham taking shape

Lead by technical director Tim Steidten, the Irons' plans for this summer are beginning to take shape.

West Ham ready to tempt defender who David Moyes wants with big-money offer

The Scotsman wants him, even if Moyes’ contract is expiring in June.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 9, 2024

Much has been made of their need to bring in a new forward, and this has arguably been emphasised by an injury to star winger Jarrod Bowen.

The England international hurt his hip in a collision with Wolves' Joao Gomes over the weekend and has now been ruled out of West Ham's all-important Europa League quarter-final first leg against Bundesliga frontrunners Bayer Leverkusen.

It is unclear as to how manager David Moyes will set up without Bowen, but it's crystal clear that the east Londoners need alternatives for when injury befalls their star frontmen.

West Ham are thought to be admirers of Leeds United star Crysencio Summerville, among others, as Steidten looks to bring in more attackers.

Meanwhile, there is also a real belief that the Hammers will look to strengthen in defence. Both Nayef Aguerd and Kurt Zouma are attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, and the former has often struggled for form over 2023/2024.

“West Ham are prepared to spend big on a centre half for next season and could cash in on Nayef Aguerd,” reported journalist Alan Nixon on his Patreon recently.

“David Moyes’s spies are putting a quick and tough defender on their wanted list and are scouring the globe for the answer. Moroccan international Aguerd could be sold abroad where he has admirers and a less frantic and physical level may suit him more.”

Given the potential longevity of current number-one goalkeeper, Alphonse Areola, you'd be forgiven for thinking that West Ham's bottom priority would be signing an alternative to the 31-year-old.

West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

However, a report from Serbia has suggested this week that Steidten is serious about bringing in Mallorca shot-stopper Predrag Rajkovic.

West Ham ready to open Rajkovic talks after extensive scouting

According to Maxbetsport, West Ham are planning to open talks over signing Rajokovic "soon", coming after extensive scouting missions from Moyes' side.

Indeed, it is believed West Ham officials have been to Mallorca "several times" to run the rule over Serbia's international keeper – who has 31 caps for his country.

They've apparently done their homework, filming the 6ft 3 ace on all occasions, so it appears he could be a concrete transfer target for Steidten this summer.

Rajkovic has started 29 league matches as Mallorca's number one, with the Spanish side boasting a fairly solid defensive record and one of the best out of any La Liga side below eighth in the table.

England denied by weather after Sarah Glenn four-for

Legspinner Sarah Glenn claimed a four-wicket haul in only her third ODI but rain ruined the prospect of a result in the final match of the series between Pakistan and England. Having been put in to bat, Pakistan were 145 for 8 from 37.4 overs before the weather intervened, meaning England took the series 2-0.Looking for their first ODI win over England, Pakistan made an impressive start in reaching 96 without loss. Glenn then removed both openers in consecutive overs, dismissing Javeria Khan for 37 and Nahida Khan for a fluent half-century.The spin pairing of Glenn and Sophie Ecclestone wheeled their way through 16 overs in tandem, as England dragged the game back their way. Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof was caught behind off Ecclestone and Glenn bowled Kaynat Hafeez and Nida Dar to give her figures of 8-1-18-4.”I was really happy to get four wickets today, but it’s a shame the rain came and the game had to be abandoned,” Glenn said. “We came back really well with the ball after Pakistan had started on top. We kept it tight and we got our rewards.”I’ve really enjoyed the three matches and it’s good to come out with a series win. The girls have been really welcoming and I’m looking forward to the T20s.”Anya Shrubsole returned from an expensive opening spell to pick up three wickets, with only Umaima Sohail’s unbeaten 27 offering much in the way of middle-order resistance for Pakistan. There was also an economical performance with the ball from Freya Davies, making her ODI debut, but England’s chances of claiming a third consecutive win were ended by the rain. The result means England finished their ICC Women’s Championship campaign with 14 wins from 21 games, placing them second on the table behind Australia. Pakistan moved up a spot to fourth, level on 16 points with South Africa, but having played three games more. The top four teams qualify automatically for the 2021 World Cup.

Tour match toil serves England reminder of daunting New Zealand challenge

Unhelpful surface sees England made to wait for declaration as Glenn Phillips makes ton

George Dobell in Whangarei15-Nov-2019If England had any doubts about the magnitude of the task facing them over the next few weeks, they will have been dispelled by a tough day in the field in Whangarei.Unable to coax movement from the ball or life from the surface, they were instead obliged to wait for the declaration from a New Zealand A batting line-up containing three men with Test experience. Glenn Phillips, a 22-year-old batsman with more than a hint of Steve Smith about him, recorded the fourth century of his first-class career and England conceded 3.59 runs an over. The loss of Rory Burns, who cut a long-hop to point moments before the close, rounded off the challenge. The appearance of Jack Leach as nightwatchman seemed an oddly negative response. The purpose of such games is, after all, to put players under pressure in order to prepare for challenges to come.Afterwards, Darren Gough – England’s short-term bowling consultant – was full of empathy for his charges. He had his share of such days, after all. But, among the words of support and respect, there was a reminder that the best, as he put it, “find a way” to succeed in such conditions.ALSO READ: Curran set for Test berth ahead of Woakes”The way I look at it,” Gough said, “is that New Zealand’s bowlers, Trent Boult and Tim Southee, bowl at 85mph and they somehow find a way to take wickets on New Zealand pitches. The ball has to swing here, because they are swing bowlers and they have good records. You have to find a way.”Ben Stokes suggested that the pitch was “seriously flat” and that it had provided a useful challenge. “[It was] a bit surprising,” he told Test Match Special, “but that’s a great test for us as a bowling group to be exposed to. It was a great opportunity for us to try a few different things; set different fields, bowl to different plans that we normally wouldn’t.”As ever with such warm-up games, it probably pays not to read too much into the statistics. Many of this England side are now pretty experienced and will not be striving for peak performance in such circumstances. It’s all about being ready for next week. But it was, Jofra Archer aside, hard to see where England were going to find the weapons to damage New Zealand. On these surfaces, with this ball, Kane Williamson looks a desperately tough proposition.Archer’s third spell was probably the day’s highlight from an England perspective. Generating sharp pace from a docile wicket and an old ball, he unsettled the batsmen with some well-directed short-balls. Phillips took one blow to the forearm and was thrown off his feet as he jerked his head out of the way of another. Earlier Hamish Rutherford had been struck on the side of the head by an Archer bouncer, but looked in excellent touch before departing in somewhat unfortunate fashion as he feathered an edge down the leg side.England’s problem, though, is that their opposition know Archer cannot bowl forever. And with no Mark Wood or Olly Stone in reserve, it is hard to build the required intensity from an attack that lacks the pace to sustain Archer’s threat. Stokes could, perhaps, fulfil the role of fast-bowling foil to Archer – he certainly bowled fast enough on slow surfaces in Sri Lanka – but in this game, understandably, was probably holding back just a little. While Stuart Broad struck early, neither he or Sam Curran carried much threat for the rest of the day. Curran came back pretty well after a disappointing first spell but he could face a tough series if he is unable to coax any swing from these balls. Stokes, while expensive, took two quick wickets after deceiving Tim Seifert with what appeared to be a slower ball and then saw Jimmy Neesham play-on as he attempted a forcing stroke. Leach conceded three fours in five deliveries at one stage but only conceded one more in his 26 overs. Again, there is nothing in these conditions for Leach but if he can restrict the scoring rate to 2.15 an over as he did here, he can feel he has done a decent job for his team. One thing is certain: if England are to win here for the first time since 2008, they will have to hold their catches. On the first day of this match, Dom Sibley, at second slip, put down a relatively simple stomach-height offered by Phillips on 27 off Stokes. These things happen, of course, but they are starting to happen just a little more often than can be ignored. Tom Blundell was reprieved on 60, too, when it caught behind off what turned out to be a no-ball, though he was very well caught at midwicket next ball.Joe Root suffered an injury scare in England’s warm-up•Getty ImagesThere was also an injury scare. Joe Root was forced off the field for a while after landing heavily when diving to prevent a boundary at long-on. He was subsequently diagnosed with a jarred hip, but returned to field well before stumps. It is not anticipated there will be lasting consequences. In the longer-term, Gough felt Saqib Mahmood could be the sort of bowler who could make inroads in such conditions. With his pace, his somewhat slingy action and a willingness to pitch the ball full, he would appear to have the ingredients to reverse this kookaburra ball as Gough once did. “He’s different to the others,” Gough said. “He’s another option when the pitch is flat. We’re working on reverse. He has the natural talent to do it and he’s desperate to be better at it. He’s keen to learn.”Some may point to Curran’s figures and suggest Chris Woakes was unfortunate to miss out here. And it is true that Woakes, with his extra pace, can at least force batsmen on to the back foot a little more readily. He also feels his recently-acquired ability to bowl the wobble seam gives him a new weapon in such conditions. But it’s not as if he has not had chances in such circumstances and it may well be wishful thinking to suggest he would have provided any more of a cutting edge. As Gough said later, while recognising Woakes’ skills, “whether he has to do something different to the past away from home, it will be interesting to see if he gets an opportunity and realises that.” The slightly depressing truth is, after years of playing county cricket on seaming wickets and with a Dukes ball, there are very few England bowlers who will flourish in these conditions.”I’ve not seen a swinging ball in the two weeks I’ve been here,” Gough said, though he did admit he had managed to swing it in the nets. “At about 70 mph. And that’s a big difference. If it swings, it will be for the first eight or nine overs.”Whatever happens on this tour, the influence of Gough has been perceived as a success. The combination of a fresh voice and his vast experience have provided new ideas to experienced bowlers who have probably heard rather a lot of the familiar, somewhat homogenised ECB voices. Gough, positive but prepared to offer some home truths where necessary, has encouraged new ideas. It seems unlikely he will be lured into anything like a full-time role – he enjoys his radio job too much for that – but conversations about future consultancy spells with England’s bowlers are ongoing.

Virat Kohli happy to take setbacks to challenge India's comfort zones

The India captain admitted his team made some poor decisions but with the World T20 just over a year away would rather the mistakes happen now

Deivarayan Muthu in Bengaluru23-Sep-20193:02

Should have reassessed our target after the start we got – Kohli

Having spent his entire IPL career at Royal Challengers Bangalore, Virat Kohli knows that it is easier to chase at M Chinnaswamy Stadium than set a target. He knows that the dew often sets in later in the evening and neutralises the threat posed by spinners. Yet, with the series on the line, he chose to bat first in the third T20I against South Africa. He challenged himself and his team-mates to step out of their comfort zones, as India tune up for the T20 World Cup in Australia next year. After Kohli became the first captain to decide against chasing at the venue, several batsmen dared to jump out of the crease to manufacture scoring opportunities, a departure from India’s earlier ODI-style approach to batting in the shortest format. Rishabh Pant was trialled at No. 4 once again (although he wasn’t supposed to bat at that spot), but India’s experiments didn’t quite come off, and a revamped South Africa side claimed a series-levelling victory.Tabraiz Shamsi celebrates Shikhar Dhawan’s wicket•Associated PressLeft-arm seamer Beuran Hendricks had Rohit Sharma nicking off for 9 in the third over, but Shikhar Dhawan laid down the marker when he hit Andile Phehlukwayo for back-to-back boundaries in the next over. Dhawan usually prefers to bide his time – be it in T20Is or ODIs – but here he hung up caution and decided to have a proper crack at South Africa’s bowlers. He regularly flitted around the crease in a bid to force the bowlers into bowling in his swinging arc.Watch cricket on ESPN+

India v South Africa is available in the US on Hotstar and ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune into the three Tests.

India were fairly well placed at 62 for 1 in seven overs, but then the pitch suddenly became slower and South Africa’s bowlers exploited it efficiently to throw a spanner in their works. Despite the pitch getting slower and wickets falling at both ends, India were keen to find higher gears. Pant took on Bjorn Fortuin, but the left-armer slid one across the batsman and had him slicing a catch to long-off. Two balls later, Shreyas Iyer ventured out of the crease and was stumped by a leg-side wide.ALSO READ – Monga: India haven’t figured out their T20 game, but they’re willing to changeSuddenly India lost four wickets for 29 runs and although they had depth in their batting line-up – Washington Sundar at No. 9 and Deepak Chahar at No. 10 – they couldn’t get the big hits away on a pitch that was now very responsive to the cutters and change-ups from Hendricks and Phehlukwayo. Not even Hardik Pandya could get the big hits away.India scrambled only four boundaries after Iyer’s dismissal in the 13th over and ended with a below-par 134 for 9.”Yes, we wanted to go for a big score and that’s exactly why we batted first,” Kohli said of India’s approach, at the post-match press conference. “In the past, in certain games in T20 cricket, we have been 20-30 runs short batting first. That has cost us the game. So, the idea again as I said at the toss, was to come out of our comfort zone and then try to get that big score because we are batting till No. 9. But quickly we realised the pitch didn’t allow us to keep doing that.”Kohli reckoned that India would have been better off had they recalibrated their focus to 170 “rather than thinking of 200″.”Because of the intent we showed the pitch obviously didn’t allow us to get to that total and we kept losing wickets. They [South Africa] hit the right areas and understood the pitch,” he said. “It was a combination of good bowling and not great decision-making. These kinds of games will keep happening as long as we are wanting to come out of our comfort zones as a team and putting ourselves in a situation, which could be the case in a big game in a big tournament.”Kohli’s bat-first decision also handicapped his bowlers, who had to cope with the dew in the second innings. While Washington came away with 4-0-27-0 and Deepak found swing in the early exchanges, Navdeep Saini and Krunal Pandya struggled with their lines and lengths. Nearly every Indian fielder had a towel, often furiously wiping the ball with it in the break between overs.Quinton de Kock took advantage of it, making a bruising, unbeaten 79 off 52 balls, and finished off the chase with nine wickets and 19 balls to spare. While such a heavy defeat might invite some pressure, Kohli said that India are ready to take more risks and “take the toss out of the way” in their run to the T20 World Cup.”Nothing is a given or a guarantee before you start playing,” Kohli said. “I think if we as a team are willing to get out of our comfort zones a lot more, then we will be unfazed with what happens at the toss. That’s why we have people batting till nine. Unless you do that and start taking those risks, you are always going to be put under pressure somewhere or the other. We want to make sure we iron all of those things out before we head into the World Cup.”
