The transfer window slammed shut earlier this month, and with just hours to go, Wolverhampton Wanderers sold star midfielder Matheus Nunes. The Portuguese international joined Premier League champions Manchester City for a fee said to be around £53m.
Football FanCast has taken a look at the player, his transfer and what was going on at Wolves this summer.
Who is Matheus Nunes?
Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes.
Matheus Nunes' age is 24, having been born on August 27th, 1998, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. However, his family moved to the Portuguese town of Ericeira, near Lisbon, when he was 12 years old. This is why he holds Portuguese citizenship and has represented the European country 11 times at senior level, scoring one goal.
The 6 foot tall midfielder began his career at Ericeirense in 2016 before he moved to top flight outfit Estoril in 2018. Here he would make just six league appearances before being signed by Portuguese giants Sporting CP for just €500,000.
During his time with the Leoes, Nunes would make 76 league appearances, score eight goals, provide five assists and win one league title. This excellent form would earn him a move to Wolves in the summer of 2022 for a fee reported to be £42m.
In the West Midlands, the 24-year-old's salary was around £85,000-a-week, or £4,420,000-a-year. This was the second-highest pay packet at the club, behind only Pablo Sarabia and Goncalo Guedes, who both make £90,000-a-week.
Matheus Nunes' position for Wolves varied, as he played at the heart of the midfield, in a central position, a central attacking position, on the left of midfield and the right of midfield, so his versatility was there for all to see.
What is the latest Matheus Nunes transfer news?
Matheus Nunes warms up for Wolverhampton Wanderers ahead of their Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
Transfers expert Fabrizio Romano reported late on August 23rd that treble winner Manchester City had submitted an offer to Wolves for Nunes, though to be worth around €50m (£43m) with add-ons. Romano also confirmed that the Portuguese international had "accepted City" as his new club, with personal terms having already been agreed.
However, in the hours following, it was widely reported that the Old Gold had rejected the proposal from their Premier League competitors. BBC Sport claimed that the rejected deal was worth around £47m, which would have represented a profit for the cash-strapped club.
Ultimately, City would come back in with another offer in the closing days of the window and eventually secured their man in a deal worth £53m, per Sky Sports News.
Why did Man City want Matheus Nunes?
Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes.
On the surface, it might've seemed odd that the all-conquering, treble-winning, record-breaking City wanted to sign Nunes, who, for all his quality, potentially underwhelmed ever so slightly during his year at Molineux.
However, with the long-term injury to Kevin De Bruyne and a deal for Lucas Paqueta falling through, a move for the 24-year-old suddenly looked much more reasonable.
While the direct comparison to the Belgian doesn't quite work due to the pair taking up different positions on the pitch, Nunes at least adds another body to Pep Guardiola's midfield, and a quality one at that.
Journalist Alex Crook told TalkSport (via The Boot Room) that the interest in Nunes likely spells the end for Kalvin Philips, saying:
"The fact that City are looking for extra midfield cover suggests that Pep Guardiola is now coming around to the idea of letting [Kalvin] Phillips go out, maybe even on loan."
It certainly doesn't look good for the Englishman's playing time now he has another player to contend with, one the club just splashed over £50m on.
Were Liverpool interested in Matheus Nunes?
Wolves' Matheu Nunes
City weren't the only 'big six' club to express genuine interest in the Rio-born gem this year, as Liverpool were said to hold a genuine interest in him in January.
According to Sky Sports News, the Reds were 'monitoring' the midfielder, with their interest in him manifesting before he had even signed for Wolves.
Sky also reported that the club was likely to try and sign him in the summer; however, their valuation of £44m was considered well below the minimum asking price Wolves had of £50m for the former Sporting star.
That said, this 'interest' can't have been all that substantial, as the Liverpool Echo reported in early June that Jürgen Klopp's side had already moved on from Nunes and were instead focussing on other targets.
Did Wolves want to sell Matheus Nunes this summer?
With only one year under his belt at Molineux, it was clear that Wolves were not keen on selling Nunes for such a small profit, and so their reluctance to sell the midfielder shouldn't have come as a surprise to fans or potential suitors.
This desire to hold onto the Portuguese international meant that they swiftly rejected City's opening offer of £47m, and according to TalkSport, planned to only sell if they received an offer worth at least £60m. For City's part, journalist Mike Minay reported that, as with all of their targets, they would've walked away if they felt that Wolves' valuation exceed their own.
In the end, City's final offer of £53m was deemed good enough by the club – a decision likely influenced by their economic difficulties and concerns about financial regulations from the Premier League.
What did Matheus Nunes' goals stats look like at Wolves?
Matheus Nunes battles off Son Heung-min as Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
For all the attention he was courting from the country's biggest clubs, you'd be forgiven for thinking Nunes must've scored plenty of goals for the Old Gold last season; well, unfortunately, that is just not the case.
In his 37 Premier League appearances for Wolves, Nunes scored just one goal and registered one assist. However, he was playing more as a central midfielder than an attacking one, which does help to explain his poor output somewhat.
That said, the one goal he scored against Chelsea was an absolute screamer.
While it was evidently clear that Wolves did not want to sell their prized asset last month, especially so close to the end of the window, the player himself was much more positive about the move.
According to ESPN, the Portuguese midfielder was 'keen' on a move to Manchester, and with Guardiola at the helm who can blame him?
What is the latest Wolves transfer news?
It was a summer of sales for the club that had spent over £100m on signings this time last year. In all, ten players left the side permanently this summer, with several first-team players among them.
Ruben Neves was at least able to fetch the club £47m, while Nathan Collins brought in another £23m. However, former stars like Adama Traore and Joao Moutinho left for nothing.
Another name that looked like it would be added to the list of departures is that of Nelson Semedo. According to Football Insider, the full-back had attracted interest from Manchester United, with the Red Devils enquiring about his availability. Luckily for the club he's still there.
The main reason the club have had to sell so many players and so dramatically reduce their spending is the fear that they would break the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules if they repeated last summer's spending.
The regulations stipulate that no club in the league can register losses of more than £105m over a three-year period, and according to The Athletic, the club were very much at risk of doing precisely this were they not to sanction a raft of sales this summer.
Ultimately, this concern over the club's financial well-being and the generally more than fair offer from City meant that the club felt they had to sanction the sale. Hopefully, for the fans, the sales this summer mean the club can start adding players to the squad again next summer.

Australia’s wicketkeeper Tim Paine has not travelled to Melbourne as planned on Friday and instead remained in Tasmania for personal reasons. His father-in-law is reportedly unwell, although Paine is currently still expected to play in the fourth Ashes Test.”Tim Paine has not travelled with the squad to Melbourne due to personal reasons,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson said. “An update on his travel plans will be provided in due course.”There are no plans as yet to call up anyone on standby, though the reserve batsman Pete Handscomb is also a capable wicketkeeper and did the job for Australia during the recent ODI series in India. Alternative options include previous incumbents Matthew Wade and Peter Nevill, or South Australia’s Alex Carey.Australia have deployed only 12 players in the three Tests so far, with Mitchell Marsh replacing Handscomb in Perth, although they may also have to make a decision about Mitchell Starc, who suffered a bruised heel as the Ashes were secured at the WACA earlier this week.
Following the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign KAA Gent forward Gift Orban, and a further update has emerged.
Ange Postecoglou has so far welcomed six reinforcements this summer, and now faces the task of replacing Spurs' talisman as the Premier League season gets underway.
What's the latest on Gift Orban to Tottenham Hotspur?
Spurs certainly have the money to spend after selling Kane to Bayern Munich for a reported £95m. Without their main man, finding goals could prove to be a difficult task for Spurs this season, potentially making the arrival of Orban potentially crucial in the coming weeks.
Postecoglou will be desperate to find a replacement as soon as possible, as the last thing that the new manager will want is to be without a goal scorer in his debut season at Spurs.
Looking to replace Kane, Spurs and Gent are in ongoing talks over a deal for Orban, according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, who reported that the North London club have verbally offered around €27m, with the Belgian club holding out for €30m this summer.
As per Tavolieri, a written offer from Spurs is set to come next week in an attempt to reach an agreement for the forward's signature.
Should Tottenham Hotspur sign Gift Orban?
Gent's Gift Orban
The arrival of Orban could represent smart business from Spurs. The forward is an option for both the present and future, who will only get better with a move to a Premier League side.
Last season, the Nigerian scored 20 goals in just 22 appearances for Gent. Meanwhile, in the current campaign, he has already found the back of the net five times in three games. The stats suggest that Spurs would be signing a man in form who may only get better in time.
Without Orban, the North London club may be forced to rely on Richarlison to lead the line throughout the campaign, who struggled to find the back of the net in his debut season at the club, scoring just three times in 35 appearances.

The Gent forward has received high praise for his performances, too, with Ben Jacobs telling TeamTalk:
"Of course, he only joined Gent in January, which makes a summer move relatively unlikely, although because of Gent playing in Belgium, there is a realistic chance that a top European club might just be able to put in an offer that’s too good to turn down.
“But at the moment, we have to bear in mind that Gift Orban is only 20 years of age and still developing, and is very happy at Gent. So he’s not desperately trying to force his way out come summer, and therefore that type of transfer barring a very healthy offer, and maybe even a Premier League club taking a risk, because he’s so early in his development, might be more one to watch in 2024.
"But what Orban is doing is putting himself in the shop window. This week alone, he’s scored seven goals including a four-minute hat-trick in the Europa Conference League. And then on top of that, four goals in the Belgian Pro League. So between Sunday and Wednesday, the young Nigerian scored seven goals, which is absolutely incredible. And when you have that type of scoring form, you’re bound to pique the interest of suitors."

James Hildreth’s fine, unbeaten 82 quietened concerns about the Taunton pitch and put Somerset in an excellent position to escape relegation
George Dobell at Taunton26-Sep-20171:46
County Championship round-up: Hampshire slip towards drop
St Paul probably wasn’t thinking about the pitch at Taunton when he wrote to the Corinthians that all old things become new again but, as this match progresses, he might as well have been. After all the talk of the worn surface on day one, after all the chuntering from Middlesex and suggestions that the ECB could impose sanctions, the pitch appeared to improve on the second day. Perhaps it was the quality of the bowling, perhaps it was the quality of the batting but, as Somerset stretched their lead beyond 250 and Middlesex were reduced to employing seamers with no slips in place, it made some of the moaning about conditions on the previous day appear pretty foolish. In truth, the pitch continued to spin, but it did so more slowly. As a consequence, batsmen had time to adjust and bowlers became more impatient. Equally, after some poor batting on day one – and the start of day two – batsmen showed a little more composure to negate the turning ball. And, if Middlesex had their time again, you suspect they might have included another specialist spinner in their team; Nathan Sowter, the legspinner, was named in their original squad but left out of the XI. Adam Voges might have found more assistance in the surface if he had landed the ball on it more often. In the absence of the injured Ollie Rayner, too much was probably required of Ravi Patel. He harnessed conditions nicely in the first innings but, with Somerset’s batsmen demonstrating greater application, his inexperience began to show on day two. He didn’t bowl poorly by any means but, delivering over the wicket and pitching down the leg side, he often asked the ball to do too much. It might have been relevant, as James Harris noted after play, that the brevity of Middlesex’s innings – they batted for just 50.3 overs – didn’t allow the bowlers the time to recover before taking the field once more. And, in James Hildreth, they found a stubborn foe. The time when Hildreth might have hoped to see his name in an Ashes squad has passed – he would be the first to admit he has lacked the consistency required to demand selection – but on days like this, when others can barely connect with the ball, he is still capable of showing his class with the bat. In a match where only one other man has passed 41, he is within sight of a chanceless century and demonstrated, once again, the ageless virtues of patience, composure and a sound defensive technique. This is Hildreth’s benefit season and it has not been easy for him or the team. He has scored just one Championship century and only in this innings did he take his average above 30. But for a man steeped in Somerset cricket to produce the contribution that may well save them from relegation will mean a great deal, while it was further evidence that his reputation as something of a flat-track bully is not entirely fair.Afterwards he hinted both that Middlesex hadn’t bowled especially well and that their batsmen had allowed their fears over the pitch to cloud their judgement.”I don’t think the pitch has eased,” Hildreth said. “If the spinners put it in the right area, it is still tough. Half the battle as a batter is in your head. If you come on to this sort of wicket and think it’s really hard work, you’ve probably shot yourself in the foot. Guys who have applied themselves in both innings have shown there are runs to be had out there.”I believe you have always got to be positive rather than worrying about surfaces. I think that Malan and Stirling were proactive and got runs that they deserved. There is spin there and it is a result wicket, but then if you play on a green wicket with seamers its hard work as well.”I have played better and got a hundred on a juicy wicket at Scarborough. But in the context of the season and for the team this is easily my best innings.”James Hildreth put Somerset in a commanding position•Getty ImagesThe upshot is that it is unthinkable that Somerset will suffer any points penalty for this pitch. While Wayne Noon, the ECB’s Cricket Liaison Officer at this match, declined to make his views public – meaning a shadow will linger over the rest of this match – it would be absurd for him to punish Somerset. Still, it seems a shame he is not prepared to confirm that now and allow the game to progress unencumbered by off-field concerns.Realistically, though, the relegation battle will be decided by events on the pitch. And, as things stand, that bodes much better for Somerset than Middlesex. With two good-quality spinners in their side and the prospect of setting a target will in excess of 300, they have an opportunity to pull off the great escape with their third win in their final four Championship games of the season.Middlesex could survive even if they lose this match but it will leave them in the uncomfortable position of relying on Warwickshire. If Hampshire lose at Edgbaston, though, and Somerset win in Taunton, it is Hampshire who will join Warwickshire in Division Two in 2018. As things stand, it looks highly likely that three teams from the so-called ‘bigger’ counties – Warwickshire, Nottinghamshire and Hampshire or Middlesex – will be playing in the lower division.Middlesex endured an awful start to the day. In the opening minutes, Voges skipped down the pitch and attempted to loft Dom Bess into Taunton town centre. Instead he found midwicket. Meanwhile Dawid Malan called John Simpson through for a sharp single only to see Bess pounce on the ball at cover the throw down the stumps with a direct hit. It’s hard to blame the pitch for a run-out.Paul Stirling and Malan, taking a positive approach, added 73 for the sixth wicket. But when Stirling was stumped – a brave and, as photographs proved, excellent decision by the square-leg umpire Michael Burns – as he dozily allowed his back foot to lift and Malan was beaten by a beauty from Jack Leach that turned past his edge, Middlesex’s slim hopes of gaining the 250 they required to guarantee Division One survival ebbed away.Craig Overton, who has bowled far better than Steve Finn in this match, returned to bowl James Harris with one that found its way through the gate, before Finn missed a sweep and Patel carved to cover. It left Somerset with a first-innings lead of 94.While Eddie Byrom, lofting to mid-off, and George Bartlett, missing a premediated sweep, fell quickly Hildreth and Trescothick showed their experience. Although Trescothick, who passed 19,000 first-class runs for Somerset during the course of the innings, could not capitalise, punished for lingering on the back foot during a good spell from Harris, Tom Abell provided fine support for Hildreth. If the most eye-catching moment of Abell’s innings was a six driven over extra-cover off Voges, the most impressive was his maturity. While far more experienced played in this match have perished as they tried to hit their way out of trouble, Abell had the sense to take his time. As ever in red-ball batting, it is the shots you don’t play that are as valuable as those you do. It’s been a tough year as captain, but if he finishes it having saved his side from relegation, he might feel it was a fight worth taking.
Liverpool and Chelsea have registered an interest in Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti this summer according to Kaveh Solhekol.
The 30-year-old could reportedly leave the French side this summer with a number of top European sides interested.
What is Verratti's market value?
Verratti is regarded as one of the best midfielders on the planet.
Following his move from Italian side Pescara in the summer of 2012 for a fee in the region €12m, the diminutive midfielder has become of the greats in PSG's history, making 416 appearances for the side, scoring 11 and assisting 61.
Verratti, who has been hailed as a "top player" by his teammate, has won almost everything there is to win in Paris, boasting nine league titles, six French cups and six French league cups in his 11-year tenure. The Italian hasn't enjoyed the taste of European success in his career, however, with the defeat to Bayern Munich in the 2020 Champions League final being the closest he came to having his hands on that historic trophy.
Soccer Football – Coupe de la Ligue Final – Paris St Germain vs AS Monaco – Matmut Atlantique Stadium, Bordeaux, France – March 31, 2018 Paris Saint-Germain’s Marco Verratti gestures REUTERS/Regis Duvignau
The player could be calling time on his career in Ligue 1 this summer according to reports, with Atletico Madrid exploring the possibility of bringing the midfielder to the Wanda Metropolitano this summer. The reports also states that the current Atleti boss Diego Simeone is a "huge admirer" of the 30-year-old. However, despite PSG being willing to sell all players this summer in an attempt to move in a new direction under new manager Luis Enrique, Verratti will not be cheap, with the reported asking price being set at €80m (£69.3m) whilst potential suitors believe the player is only worth half that price.
Speaking on Sky Sports News, Solhekol revealed that Premier League sides Liverpool and Chelsea hold an interest in the midfielder this summer, however it may have been agent talk in order to try and make money this summer: "We’ve also been told that two Premier League clubs are interested in signing him. We’ve been told that those clubs were Liverpool and Chelsea. We haven’t been able to confirm that, it could just be a case of he’s a player that has been offered to Liverpool and Chelsea by intermediaries, by agents, by representatives who are trying to make some money from the deal and they know that Chelsea and Liverpool are potentially looking for midfielders this summer."
Should Liverpool sign Marco Verratti?
Despite Verratti's quality and reputation, he probably shouldn't be a signing Liverpool make this window.
For one, Liverpool need a different profile of midfielder than Verratti. With Fabinho and Jordan Henderson set to depart for Al Ittihad and Al Ettifaq respectively, the Reds need to replace them with players of a similar profile. According to FBref, the type of Liverpool midfielder that the Italian is most similar to is Spaniard Thiago Alcantara, which isn't the profile Liverpool requires this summer, already having Curtis Jones and adding Alexis Mac Allister as well.
The Italian is also very injury prone, having missed over 100 games due to injury in Paris. Midfield unavailability has been a big issue for the Merseyside club for the past five seasons, with the likes of Henderson, Thiago, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all struggling with injury problems which at times has hampered the club. The club have moved to address this issue with the additions of Dominik Szoboszlai and Mac Allister, who have very impressive injury records, but the addition of Verratti would be a step back to a more injury-prone and less reliable midfield.
With the position Liverpool need to address in the market, Verratti is not the right buy, and the potential €80m fee could be better used on other, younger targets who are better fits in defensive midfield.
Hours after resigning as India coach, Anil Kumble tweeted “thank you!”, and attached a statement to his tweet
ESPNcricinfo staff20-Jun-2017I am honoured by the confidence reposed in my by the CAC, in asking me to continue as Head Coach. The credit for the achievements of the last one year goes to the captain, the entire team, coaching and support staff.Post this intimation, I was informed for the first time yesterday by the BCCI that the Captain had reservations with my ‘style’ and about my continuing as the Head Coach. I was surprised since I had always respected the role boundaries between Captain and Coach. Though the BCCI attempted to resolve the misunderstandings between the Captain and me, it was apparent that the partnership was untenable, and I therefore believe it is best for me to move on.Professionalism, discipline, commitment, honesty, complementary skills and diverse views are the key traits I bring to the table. These need to be valued for the partnership to be effective. I see the Coach’s role akin to ‘holding a mirror’ to drive self-improvement in the team’s interest. In light of these ‘reservations’, I believe it is best I hand over this responsibility to whomever the CAC and BCCI deem fit.Let me reiterate that it has been an absolutely privilege to have served as Head Coach for the last one year. I thank the CAC, BCCI, CoA and all concerned.I also wish to thank the innumerable followers and fans of Indian cricket for their continued support. I will remain a well-wisher of the great cricketing tradition of my country forever.- Anil Kumble
ScorecardSussex, weakened by injuries, short on experience with bat as well as ball, were likely always to find the going tough here but just how tough may have taken even them by surprise. The only consolation in losing to Nottinghamshire inside two days is that they will not face as formidable an attack again this summer.Indeed, it is quite possible that no one will, which is something Nottinghamshire may have suspected would be the consequence of James Pattinson’s contribution to their three wins from three. The combination of Pattinson, Stuart Broad and Jake Ball had older Trent Bridge members recalling the days of Hadlee and Rice, even Larwood and Voce, in trying to assess where it might be placed, given their pedigree, in a pecking order of Nottinghamshire attacks, yet the recall of the 26-year-old from Melbourne to Australia’s one-day squad may limit their appearance together in the county’s scorecard archive to this match only.Pattinson’s selection for Australia’s Champions Trophy squad means that, instead of playing nine four-day matches, his stint at Trent Bridge will probably be limited to the three he has completed. Nonetheless, he will sit impressively among Nottinghamshire’s overseas players even if he never plays another first-class match, his contribution amounting to 20 wickets at an average of 11.12.There is a possibility that he might be allowed to return to face Leicestershire and Kent in late June but it is difficult to imagine, somehow, that England’s management of player workload would also allow both Broad and Ball to be available too.Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores was philosophical about losing Pattinson so soon.”It is disappointing, of course, because with bat and ball he has been outstanding,” he said. “He gives everything he has got and that’s appreciated by the members and certainly by his team-mates.”But you accept these days that players are pushing to play at the highest level. Playing for your country is what everybody strives for and we knew when we signed him there was always a chance Australia would want him back because he is a high quality, exciting player.”You just have to enjoy having players like him when they are able to play for you. And having seen the form he is in I think Australia made the right decision. He would have been unlucky not to have got in.”Nottinghamshire have up to 12 names on their list of potential replacements for Pattinson, the majority offered by agents rather than identified by the county. They may decide to pursue none of them, although Moores is keen not to lose the momentum Pattinson has given their early-season form.”It will have to be the right kind of player but it is a busy period during the Champions Trophy with a lot of Championship cricket and hopefully the later stages of the Royal London Cup so we will be looking to get somebody in,” he said.Sussex, still shaken by Nottinghamshire’s extraordinary Riki Wessels-inspired recovery from 88 for 5 on the opening day, were in bad shape when they resumed, having been reduced to 11 for 3 on the first evening. Spectators had barely settled when Delray Rawlins, one of five players in the Sussex line-up with 13 first-class appearances or fewer, gave Pattinson his third wicket of the first innings, feathering a catch to wicketkeeper Chris Read, his 500th dismissal at Trent Bridge.Laurie Evans quickly provided Pattinson’s fourth, edging to second slip, where Samit Patel held a sharp catch. Stiann van Zyl and Luke Wright tried to fight back but with none of the four Nottinghamshire seamers, Luke Fletcher included, content merely to play a supporting role, there was no break in the pressure. Ball ended the resistance of both, and Fletcher quickly dealt with Ben Brown.Still 288 runs behind when the last wicket fell, conveniently giving the bowlers the lunch interval in which to recharge, Sussex were inevitably asked to follow on. They did a little better, Chris Nash grafting to a half-century and Wright as ever on the front foot, but wickets fell at a similar frequency.Jofra Archer, a bowler who can clearly bat, was wonderfully disrespectful in the way he went for his shots in both innings, scoring 40 off 29 balls the first time, when he struck Ball for a six and two fours off consecutive deliveries, and 47 off 32 in the second. He looks a prospect, but otherwise it was an experience Sussex on which Sussex would be wise not to dwell.
