Philippe Coutinho sale: The best deal Liverpool could have made this January

The departure of Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool to Barcelona was always going to happen at some point soon, but Liverpool fans can be forgiven for finding themselves miffed at how it was allowed to happen in January.

After an up-and-down start to this season’s campaign, the Reds are on course for a top four finish and have qualified for the next stage of the Champions League. But whether or not they end this campaign in triumph or in failure is still very much in the balance. And selling one of their best players isn’t really going to help matters.

It feels like two steps taken backwards after one leap forwards.

The signing of Virgil van Dijk represented the much-needed addition of a player Liverpool simply didn’t have. Whether or not the Dutchman is the dominating defender he appeared to be last season is perhaps up for debate after his first half of this season. He hasn’t performed well in a struggling Southampton side, but there are clear mitigating factors to be taken into account: he was clearly unsettled and unhappy.

That, however, is in stark contrast to Coutinho, who was technically his teammate for all of a week. The Brazilian wanted to leave and never changed his mind, finally getting his wish in January. To all intents and purposes, this is the same situation as Van Dijk, but the fact that Coutinho put that all to one side for a few months and gave his all to his team is creditable. It’s not what Van Dijk seems to have done.

But although Liverpool really were in dire need of a centre-back in this transfer window, and although, with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah playing either side of Roberto Firmino, the need isn’t quite so great, you get the feeling they’re probably now in need of a creative midfield player, too. Jurgen Klopp’s side now lack a creative midfielder who can change the speed of attacks and see passes others can’t. A lot of that pressure might well be put on the shoulders of Adam Lallana, who’s been injured for most of the season.

And yet there’s an upside.

What the £142m seems to have allowed Liverpool to do is rebalance a squad which was hideously top-heavy. By getting rid of an attacker, they’ve been able to buy a top defender. It’s inconceivable that Liverpool didn’t know that Coutinho was leaving before splashing out on Van Dijk, and the deal with Southampton was surely done in the knowledge that there was £142m coming in for him. Now, instead of having four top attackers, they have three in attack and one in defence. It balances the see-saw just that little bit more.

And just as one Virgil van Dijk won’t change Liverpool’s defence overnight, losing Coutinho probably won’t see one of the league’s most prolific attacks become toothless overnight either.

If that’s the case, perhaps we might look back on this window as a net good for Liverpool: that in losing a part of an attack which is still fearsome, they’ve been able to patch up a defence which was anything but. Although their threat at one end might be curtailed slightly, their vulnerability at the other might have been helped significantly. And so instead of being able to score three goals in a game, maybe they’ll only manage two – but instead of having to score three to win, they’ll concede fewer and be able to win games by scoring less, too.

Balance is key to most great sides. The fact that Liverpool have been so entertaining this season and yet, ultimately, so ineffective, is down to the fact that their balance is so off-centre. Selling Coutinho and replacing him with a player in a completely different position might not sound like a move which will pacify the fans, but in terms of squad balance, it might well turn out to be the best deal Liverpool could have made this month.

Everton on alert for wing wizard

Everton are on red alert for Aidean McGeady, after Sparkak Moscow revealed that they are open to offers for the winger.

The Republic of Ireland international left Celtic in 2010 to move to Russia after developing into one of the SPL’s leading stars.

Although he has been relatively impressive for Spartak, the 27-year-old has spoken out about his desire to return to Britain.

This has seen interest in his signature spike, with a number of Premier League sides thought to be keen.

McGeady’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, which has fuelled rumours that his club may be willing to sell in January.

Spartak’s general director, Roman Askhabadze, has confirmed this but admitted that he would like to keep the wide-man.

“The club is willing to discuss a new contract for Aiden at any time,” he is quoted by the Daily Star.

“But if we get a good offer this winter, we would be willing to consider it.”

Everton are thought to be at the front of the queue for McGeady, with Roberto Martinez a fan of the player.

The Toffees chief is also thought to be willing to spend in the New Year to build his squad.

City defender eager to extend contract

Joleon Lescott has admitted that he would love to sign a new contract at Manchester City.

The England international has two seasons left on his current deal at the Etihad Stadium, and is starting to think about his future.

“I’ve got this [season] and one more. I would love to extend it and finish my career here but’s that for another day,” The Guardian have Lescott as saying.

“I’m just focused on doing the job this season and, if that brings an extension, then great. Going knocking on doors isn’t really my style. That’s not in my character and I don’t think my mum would be very happy with me if I did that. I just continue to play well and do a professional job.

“I know where I’ve come from. A few years ago I was playing at Plymouth on Tuesday nights, now Tuesday nights mean Champions League. I’m grateful for what I have, so I won’t be rocking the boat.

Lescott has been in competition with new signing Matija Nastasic for a staring place alongside Vincent Kompany and has revealed his disappointment at being left out recently against Real Madrid.

“It hurt to be left out at the Bernabeu. I wanted to play. It’s a great stadium, it was a great occasion but you have to respect the manager’s decision and pick yourself up and support the lads. Matija has been training with us for a couple of weeks now. He’s an international, he played a lot of games for Fiorentina and he’s looked strong.

“I just have to work hard. It’s happened before over the last couple of seasons. I’ve played, been left out. It’s happened during my career and I’m ready for the fight. But we’re all together and we have the same goal, which is to win trophies.

“The team was named and I wasn’t in it. The manager gets paid to make those decisions and he has to live by them; he gets the plaudits when it turns out to be the right one. He takes it all on his shoulders and we have to respect what he decides to do,” Lescott concluded.

HYS: Should Aston Villa start Kodjia at Wembley?

Aston Villa go into the richest game of football as underdogs on Saturday, so should Steve Bruce throw caution to the wind and start Jonathan Kodjia?

When Kodjia joined Aston Villa from Bristol City, fans had an instant new favourite as the towering striker grabbed goals for fun, and what a story it would be if he returned to seal his side’s promotion this weekend.

The 28 year-old Ivory Coast international bagged 19 Championship goals in his first season at Villa Park, but some torrid luck with injuries has derailed his promising start.

There’s no question about his goalscoring talents, but the big man certainly hasn’t looked himself in recent weeks as he works towards full fitness.

He has grabbed a goal and a few assists in his limited time on the pitch this season though, so should Steve Bruce unleash him at Wembley?

[ad_pod ]

The first instinct for most fans would of course be to say no, as Lewis Grabban has been an excellent addition on loan from Bournemouth.

Bruce’s side are the underdogs on Saturday though, and Fulham will no doubt be expecting the usual defensive 4-1-4-1 setup, so why not surprise them?

Whether it be by shifting Grabban further wide or really going for it with two up front, the Cottagers will absolutely not be expecting any major changes from Bruce’s usual sturdy setup, and Kodjia would certainly give them something to worry about.

So, Aston Villa fans, would you take a risk and give Kodjia his chance on Saturday? Or play it safe? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…

HYS: Which Everton fringe players should start vs Liverpool?

The Third Round of the FA Cup remains one of the greatest traditions of English football, but due to the incredible pressures of the Premier League, it has inevitably become the weekend in which most managers look to rotate their squads after a difficult winter period.

While that may be a disparaging remark on how the FA Cup has gradually waned in prestige and importance down the years, it does give fringe players the chance to prove themselves once again after finding themselves some way down the pecking order.

With Everton’s squad emerging as a particularly unbalanced and confusing one after a summer of unprecedented spending at Goodison Park, Sam Allardyce will surely relish the chance to give such players a runout on Friday night against Liverpool and assess whether they should be a part of his future plans.

So, Everton fans, which three fringe players would you like to see start against the Reds in the coming instalment of the Merseyside derby? Let us know which ones you would by giving them a thumbs up, and those you wouldn’t a thumbs down…

FIVE defensive midfielders to improve Liverpool

Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva is considered to be a bit of an unsung hero at Anfield due to the integral services he provides in the middle of the park. The Brazilian midfielder is tenacious when it comes to breaking-up play, and puts in the leg work so the likes of Philippe Coutinho don’t have to.

But I often feel that Leiva’s vitality to the Reds often goes unnoticed – he’s currently the only holding midfielder that the Reds can boast, and without him, defensive duties in the middle of the park have to be taken up by Steven Gerrard, which is a waste of the England international’s talents going forward.

With a disturbing gap in Brendan Rodgers’ squad depth now identified, we’ve compiled a list of FIVE tough-tackling, tenacious and physical midfielders who could be snapped up during the January transfer window to significantly improve the Premier League outfit’s squad.

Agbonlahor wants to be the main-man in attack

Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor wants manager Paul Lambert to deploy him as a centre-forward this season.

The 25-year-old was used in a number of positions last term, including wide midfield and behind the main striker. Agbonlahor, who missed Villa’s first two games of the 2012/13 Premier League campaign with a knee injury, is now hopeful that he will be played in his preferred position.

He told Sky Sports:

“Last season I was being used more left midfield or off the striker and it was a different sort of formation. If you don’t get a run of games (in the same position) it can sort of mess your head up. Hopefully I can get a certain amount of games in my preferred position.”

However, Agbonlahor admits that he will have to fight for the centre-forward position with Darren Bent, Andreas Weimann, Christian Benteke and Jordan Bowery.

“No one is guaranteed a starting place and they’re going to be coming after my place. That was the same when I was younger. I was going for other players’ places.”

Villa will host Swansea City in their next Premier League game on Saturday.

Revealed: 85% of West Ham fans want summer swoop for Alfie Mawson

West Ham fans have been debating a potential move for Alfie Mawson, and fans are adamant they should swoop for the Swansea defender.

Alfie Mawson will definitely not be going to the World Cup this summer after the young defender had knee surgery this week, but that might not stop him finding a new club.

The in-form defender will surely be one of the relegated stars to move this summer, with Tottenham reportedly leading the pack at the moment.

24 year-old Mawson completed 187 long balls this season, more than any other Swansea player. He also completed the most passes, and was the only Swansea player to break 200 clearances with 222.

Perhaps most impressive of all, Mawson led his side with 122 aerial battles won, while the next best had just 72.

[ad_pod ]

Plenty of teams will be queuing up for his signature, and it seems West Ham fans are hoping their club will be at the front of that queue.

The Hammers escaped relegation with reassuring wins over Leicester and Everton, but fans are desperate for some investment in the spine of the team.

Mawson is what many fans would call a classic defender, but he also possesses excellent ball skills, making him a perfect fit for the Hammers.

85 per cent of fans clearly agree with this statement, and you can check out the full poll results for yourself below…

In Focus: Liverpool need to address goalkeeper issue amid link to Alisson

Liverpool may consider using Simon Mignolet in a swap deal to sign Roma goalkeeper Alisson, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

What’s the story?

The Merseyside outfit have already made a splash in the January transfer market by signing defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for a reported £75m figure.

It seems that the club are still not satisfied with their defensive attributes as they are now reportedly targeting a new goalkeeper.

Gazzetta dello Sport claims that the Premier League outfit are interested in Roma shot-stopper Alisson, who took over as first choice this season.

The report adds that Liverpool could be open to sending current number one Mignolet to the Serie A club to help sweeten the deal.

Is Alisson better than Liverpool’s current pair?

Mignolet has been the club’s first choice since his switch from Sunderland in 2013, but he has never been able to win over the fans.

The Belgian has made a number of blunders during his time at Anfield, and even though he has the top jersey, there is little confidence in him from the supporters.

Liverpool’s number two Loris Karius has also struggled to impress and does not look close to challenging Mignolet for a spot in the first XI.

Alisson is an attractive prospect for the Premier League outfit given that he has kept the most clean sheets in Serie A so far this season.

The 25-year-old has often been described as a ball-playing keeper, which would suit Liverpool’s style.

Arsenal accused of ‘lacking class’ over transfer saga

Brendan Rodgers has launched an outspoken attack on Arsenal, claiming the Gunners have “lacked class” over their very public pursuit of Luis Suarez, according to The Guardian.

Arsenal have had two bids rejected for the Uruguayan, one of which they hoped would trigger a release clause in the player’s contract by adding an extra £1 to an offer of £40million.

“I was surprised,” said the Liverpool manager of Arsenal’s second bid for Suárez.

“I’ve got to say I’ve always associated Arsenal as a club with class and so there was a wee bit of a game there. For us, it’s about moving on and doing our own work.

“There will come a point where they understand our position.

“Obviously they have an interest and they put that interest in with two bids which were nowhere near what the player is worth. That’s within their right.

“There is a market in football for players but from us the message is constant. We do not want to sell.”

Suarez played in front of the Anfield crowd as part of Steven Gerrard’s testimonial on Saturday – for the first time incidentally since revealing he wanted to leave the club.

He was rewarded a warm reception from the Liverpool fans, although it seems to have made no difference, with the Uruguayan the only first team player not to attend the captain’s gala dinner afterwards.

Rodgers also revealed he had received encouragement from the club’s owners in his fight to keep Suarez at the club.

“The owners have been brilliant,” he added.

“If it was another club needing the money or desperate for the money it could have been a different story. But John Henry and Tom [Werner, the chairman] have been first class through the whole process, so there are no arguments there and it gives you the confidence they are not in any hurry to sell because they understand we are trying to build here.”
