Flashback: Newcastle sell Yohan Cabaye

On 29 January 2014, Newcastle United sold Yohan Cabaye to Paris Saint-Germain in a deal that clearly upset a number of the St. James’ Park faithful.

It is understood The Magpies received a fee of around £22.5million, via Transfermarkt, for the midfielder, making him their fourth largest sale in the club’s history.

Cabaye, who made his Premier League debut for Newcastle in their goalless draw against Arsenal on 13 August 2011, became a cult hero amongst the Geordies during his time, although it was not without controversy.

The former France international had allegedly refused to play for Alan Pardew’s side at the beginning of the 2013-14 season following the club’s decision to reject a bid from Arsenal, per BBC Sport.

However, fans quickly forgot about that when he started to perform on the pitch and judging by many of their reactions, they were devastated to hear that he was being sold and provided their reactions on Twitter.

Cabaye had made a name for himself during his time at Lille, which led to Newcastle being able to snap him up for a bargain fee of £4.5m, per Transfermarkt.

During his two-and-a-half seasons on Tyneside, he created a cult status with the performances he produced and was largely effective in the team.

He scored 17 goals and provided 10 assists in his 79 top-flight appearances for The Magpies and helped guide them to a fifth-place finish under Pardew in 2012.

The Frenchman had the ability to dictate play from the middle of the park and kept the tempo ticking as he managed to play an influential role that would lead him to a switch to PSG.

However, things did not pan out as the 33-year-old would have liked at the Ligue One outfit as he was sent back to the Premier League after one season joining Crystal Palace.

Following a three-year spell in London with The Eagles, he headed to Dubai and played for Al-Nasr, although that venture lasted just six months and has since become a free agent.

Celtic wait on McGregor scan result

[ad_pod ]

Celtic are waiting on scan results to determine the extent of Callum McGregor’s calf injury.

The midfielder missed his first match of the season through injury as the Hoops beat Motherwell 4-1 on Sunday to restore their eight point advantage at the top of the SPFL table.

With Scott Brown suspended it meant a brand new midfield, with Nir Bitton returning to the side alongside Ewan Henderson who was starting his first ever top team match.

“He’s picked up an injury from the midweek,” Rodgers said, as quoted by The Daily Record, when explaining McGregor’s injury.

“We would’ve taken him off but we were down to 10 men and he didn’t feel it too bad. But then the last few days its stiffened up so we’ll see what the result of the X-ray is on that.”

Rodgers will be hoping to have McGregor available to face Hearts on Wednesday but surely won’t take any chances with a Scottish Cup quarter-final against Hibs following three days later.

McGregor has been a crucial member of Rodgers’ plans this season – his appearance against Valencia was his 54th match for club and country this season.

With Ryan Christie picking up a hamstring knock in the win over Motherwell, Bitton or Henderson could retain their place in the side to face Hearts if McGregor fails to prove his fitness.

Aston Villa fans react to Jack Grealish’s ongoing absence

[ad_pod ]

Jack Grealish’s troublesome shin injury will see him miss out once again for Aston Villa, who face Stoke City in the Championship this weekend.

Grealish has been absent since injuring his shin in the latter stages of Villa’s Championship clash with West Bromwich Albion in December.

Villa boss Dean Smith has ruled the Englishman out of the fixture with Stoke, which has brought a response from the club’s fans on social media.

Smith’s words seem to suggest that the 23-year-old is closing on a return to action, though, at what is a vital stage of the season.

However, it would be fair to say that a number of the Villa supporters are concerned that the team will again be without the 5ft 9in ace this weekend.

Meanwhile, a couple of fans have even doubted whether they will ever see Grealish turn out for the club again.

David Seaman wants Spurs to win Champions League

[ad_pod ]

Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman wants Tottenham Hotspur to win the Champions League!

Spurs progressed to the quarter-finals on Tuesday, as they beat Borussia Dortmund 1-0 at Signal Iduna Park to seal a 4-0 aggregate victory.

What’s he said?

Spurs last reached the quarter-finals in 2011, inspired by the brilliant form of Gareth Bale.

With the last-eight draw to be made next week, and with Real Madrid already eliminated, many Spurs fans are dreaming of unlikely glory.

And Seaman, who played for Arsenal between 1990 and 2003, swears blind that he is supporting the Gunners’ bitter rivals.

Speaking to TalkSport, he said: “No seriously, I swear, I would want them to win.

“If they were in a final against a foreign team I would want Tottenham to beat them, no doubt about that.

“Say Tottenham were playing Bayern Munich, Barcelona, whoever – I would want the English team to win.”

Asked if he also wanted Manchester United to win the tournament in 1999, when they beat Bayern in dramatic circumstances, ex-England stopper Seaman added: “Of course I did, there’s no question about it.

“I played 75 times for my country, I’d want the English team to win. That’s just the way I am.”

Arsenal fans right to be angry

“I would want them to win.” Six words that Arsenal fans will not take too kindly to.

Gunners fans were surely rooting for Dortmund to pull off a miraculous comeback on Tuesday, just as Spurs fans will be hoping Arsenal lose to Rennes in the Europa League this week.

It is all well and good saying that an Englishman should back the English team, but rivalries often transcend nationality.

Seaman, ultimately, is being a tad naive.

If Spurs do reach the final, which is a long shot anyway, you can bet your bottom dollar 99.9 per cent of Arsenal fans will be hoping they lose. That decimal point appears, amazingly, to be a man who won two league titles and four FA Cups for the Gunners.

West Ham fans react as Carroll set for summer exit

[ad_pod ]

Loads of West Ham fans have been reacting to a contract update, as one report claims Andy Carroll will be allowed to leave the club this summer.

Carroll will be out of contract at the end of the season, and a report from Claret and Hugh claims the striker will not be offered a new deal to stay in East London.

The towering target man has struggled with injuries throughout his career, but these problems have intensified since he joined West Ham.

The former England international has played just 141 games for the Hammers, a relatively low number considering he joined the club way back in 2013.

At 30 years of age, it seems unlikely that his injury problems are going to get any better, although the aforementioned report does claim the club may offer him a pay-as-you-play deal.

Carroll has played 13 times this season after missing the first half of the campaign with an ankle problem, and he has scored once.

Villa fans hail Grealish reaction after scoring winner in derby

[ad_pod ]

Jack Grealish was punched in the head by a Birmingham supporter during the Second City derby but bounced back to score the only goal of the game as Aston Villa took the bragging rights.

Grealish labelled it the best day of his life as he also got to captain the side during the Villans’ win on Sunday.

Villa fans took to Twitter to praise the midfielder, not only for barely reacting to the incident which took place but also for going on to score the game’s only goal.

Their supporters seemed to have run out of superlatives for the 23-year-old, calling him an inspiration and hero.

Emotions often run high in derby games but Grealish was able to keep his in check, only to race into the crowd as he found the bottom right-hand corner with his low strike.

Villa’s number ten has four goals and four assists in 23 league outings this term.

Here’s how Villa fans reacted to the punch and his response.

Liverpool fans react on Twitter as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain takes part in training

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react with joy after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain took part in training with the first-team out in Spain, as he steps up his return to full fitness.

The England international suffered a serious knee injury in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final tie against Roma at Anfield last season, which looked likely to rule him out for the entirety of the current campaign.

However, the 25-year-old midfielder has made a remarkable recovery and was able to take part in a session involving rondos, core exercises and ball-work drills with his teammates, who will be happy to have him back for the title run-in.

Balague claims Tottenham star Eriksen could join Real Madrid

[ad_pod ]

According to Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague, new Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane wants to bring Tottenham Hotspur attacker Christian Eriksen to the Bernabeu in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the word, then?

On Monday, it was announced that Zidane had been reappointed as Madrid head coach, just 10 months after leaving the same role.

It seems likely that Los Blancos will spend big this summer as they look to improve on what has been a turbulent and disappointing 2018-19 campaign.

According to Balague, who posted a video on his official Twitter account, Zidane is keen to bring Eriksen to the Spanish capital in this summer’s transfer window.

The Denmark international will see his current deal with Spurs expire at the end of next season.

The Tottenham fans have recently questioned whether the 27-year-old wants to still be at the club and it is shaping up to be a very interesting summer transfer window.

What would Tottenham be losing?

It would probably be fair to say that Eriksen has not been at his best in recent weeks.

The playmaker has still contributed seven goals and 12 assists in all competitions this season, though, and his overall record for Tottenham is excellent.

Indeed, the Dane has managed 63 goals and 81 assists in 264 appearances for his English club in all competitions since a 2013 switch from Ajax.

It would not be a surprise if the reported interest from Real Madrid had turned his head, with the reigning European champions sure to spend heavily this summer.

Spurs need to be careful that Eriksen’s exit – if it indeed happens – does not start a trend of key players moving on in search of pastures new.

Indeed, teams will be closely monitoring the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli, particularly if the north London outfit fail to progress past the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Raheem Sterling: Manchester City star undoubtedly one of the world’s best

What a season Raheem Sterling is having. Despite all the criticism he’s received over the years, he’s now establishing himself as one of the standout stars in world football and he’ll be key if Manchester City are to continue winning trophies.

His hat-trick on Saturday against Watford took his tally to 18 goals and 15 assists in all competitions this season, and there’s no sign of him slowing down. The importance of some of those goals, like the winner away at Schalke a couple of weeks ago, are vital to understanding his important in Pep Guardiola’s side too.

He’s been criticised for his finishing abilities in the past, along with a stupid amount of trivial off-pitch things too, but this season and last he’s arriving in the box at exactly the right moment to receive the ball. He’s also getting his head down and running at players with one intention, to get into the box and create a chance.

There are times when City’s possession can lead to a lack of chances created. The ball moves slowly from left to right as the opposition sit back, happy with City’s players in front of them. Sterling provides the spark that turns this into a direct threat within seconds, and he’s now consistent and up there as one of Pep Guardiola’s most reliable players.

In a season where Kevin De Bruyne has started just seven of City’s 30 games, the 24-year-old has stepped up, and if the Blues win the league he’s got a very strong claim to be the league’s player of the season, alongside Virgil Van Dijk.

He scored 18 goals in the Premier League last season, and he’s on 15 so far this campaign, so another season around the 20 mark will prove just how consistent the Englishman is.

If he keeps it up he’ll cement himself as one of the world’s top players, no matter what his haters say.
