Bukayo Saka had some harsh words for VAR after Arsenal had a penalty decision overturned in the first half, following a challenge by Nick Pope on Viktor Gyokeres. Referee Jarred Gillett had initially pointed to the spot but was recommended to go to the screen by VAR and changed his mind. The Gunners went on to win the match 2-1 thanks to a last-gasp Gabriel header but Saka expressed his disappointment at the decision to reverse the first-half penalty.

Saka criticises VAR despite Arsenal win

Saka claimed in his post-match interview that such decisions “always go against” Arsenal, questioning whether the bar for a “clear and obvious error” was met in the call to overturn the penalty.

Replays showed that Pope had in fact got a small touch on the ball before taking down Gyokeres, while room was left for interpretation over whether the Swedish striker had a clear chance at goal despite this. The final decision was no penalty, leaving Arsenal incensed as they were denied the opportunity to take the lead – before Newcastle United soon scored through Nick Woltemade at the other end.

The Gunners and Saka, who returned the starting line-up after injury, would go on to win the win in stoppage time as it took a late comeback involving some inspired substitutions to secure victory.

Arsenal went up to second in the table with the victory, moving to just two points behind Liverpool following the Reds’ defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday. But it could have been a far simpler afternoon had the Gunners been awarded their first-half penalty shout.

As Saka outlined, the key VAR terminology of “clear and obvious” has become increasingly clouded in recent seasons. What was brought in as a medium to prevent major errors has, at times, been criticised as a new way to re-referee the game from Stockley Park.

Whether Pope’s touch on the ball negates his foul on Gyokeres is one thing. Whether it was obvious enough a decision to overturn the call is another, as Saka states. The fact that Arsenal won the game renders the decision meaningless in the grand scheme of things, but Gunners fans will have some choice words for the decision regardless.

Saka said: "There are a few things we can speak about, for example the penalty. For me if we have VAR, it is for a clear and obvious error and the fact that it took the ref that long to decide shows it is not a clear and obvious error. It is things like this that always go against us, but today we got what we deserved and that's why we are all so happy. It doesn't matter now, does it?"

Arsenal will approach a trio of London derbies against West Ham United, Fulham and Crystal Palace with a spring in their step following another victory in a tough away game at St James’ Park, where they have often fallen short in recent years.

With Champions League games against Olympiacos and Atletico Madrid also on the horizon, October could ultimately be a month which begins to shape Arsenal’s season. A succession of victories could suggest that another title challenge could be on the way under Mikel Arteta.

This weekend was no doubt a tough test, as the Gunners could have been an almost-unassailable eight points behind Liverpool had results gone against them. As it is, late goals across both fixtures – including a big goal by former Gunner Eddie Nketiah- have meant that gap is just two. This could ultimately be a significant weekend in Arsenal’s season.

The VAR debate will rage on, though, with multiple contentious decisions taking place this weekend, including the decision not to send off Nathan Collins at Brentford against Manchester United.

It is unlikely that we will ever reach a place where everyone is happy with every decision – but some more uniformed guidance over what is clear and obvious could make a major impact and avoid points of contention such as this. But as the Gunners take their well-earned three points home from the North East, Saka and co. will let it go on this occasion.

Top of the list is Paul Pogba, who actually came through the academy at Carrington. The French midfielder eventually left for Juventus in 2012, but four years later, returned to Old Trafford in a huge £89m deal.

Pogba’s second stint in Manchester had plenty of ups and downs, and in 2022, he left when his contract expired.

Manchester United’s activity within the transfer market over recent years has been questionable to say the least, wasting a whole host of money in the process.

Erik ten Hag’s tenure was arguably one of the worst for the club, with the hierarchy providing the Dutchman with over £600m worth of funds to improve the first-team squad.

However, his highest finish in the Premier League at Old Trafford was third place, but ultimately his additions failed to make the desired impact – which led to his dismissal in October last year.

The Red Devils’ failures in the transfer market have made Ruben Amorim’s task in the role a tad harder, having to work with the players already at the club – which has seen him notch a measly 40% win rate.

That could all be about to change this summer, with the hierarchy already backing the new boss, whilst also preparing other offers for additional signings before the transfer deadline.

The midfield department is next on the agenda for United, with Fermin Lopez one of the players in their sights, according to some of the latest updates on the 22-year-old’s future.

The Cameroonian international has all the tools to be the perfect ball-winner at the heart of the squad, that’s if he can replicate his stats from the recent campaign at the AMEX.

Such numbers could see him add the needed presence in the middle of the park, but he has also showcased he has the tools to provide others with chances around him.

He completed 87% of the passes he attempted in the Premier League throughout 2024/25, 4.1 of which per 90 were progressive – able to give the new additions in the final third the opportunity to succeed.

As seen by the recent reports, it’s clear that the staff behind the scenes rate him highly, subsequently making him the next key target in their overhaul of the squad.

If Baleba can have the success Bruno has endured since his own big-money move to Old Trafford, it would be a deal worth every penny despite the massive transfer fee.

There are yet to be any new arrivals at Stamford Bridge on deadline day, but after a recent twist, a high-profile departure could be on the cards, with Nicholas Jackson back on his way to Bayern Munich, after the deal was called off on Sunday.

The Blues have reached an agreement with Sunderland to recall Marc Guiu from his loan, with the Spaniard set to deputise for Joao Pedro, should Jackson depart, with Liam Delap set for a spell on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury.

Another area in which Enzo Maresca has been keen to strengthen is attacking midfield, with a deal to sign Brighton & Hove Albion’s Facundo Buonanotte already agreed, while the manager has also held talks over a deal for Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez.

That is according to journalist Ben Jacobs (via TEAMtalk), with the reporter stating BlueCo have personally been in contact with Lopez’s agents to convince him to move to Stamford Bridge, saying: “Fermin Lopez’s situation is that Chelsea predominantly in the last week worked on the player side only, Enzo Maresca spoke to the player directly, and there were several conversations between the agent of Fermin Lopez and the Chelsea hierarchy.

“That followed a bid which was around €40million. The player would have to go to Barcelona and say I want out – that hasn’t happened.

“Number two, Chelsea’s offer would have to be in excess of €60million. So I don’t think this one is live or likely at the moment, but like I say with Chelsea, you can never say never.”

According to Tutto Mercato Web, Glasgow Rangers are lining up a last-minute deadline day deal to sign Lecce right-back Frederic Guilbert today.

The report claims that the Scottish giants are on his trail and that they could face competition from Spanish side Sevilla, who have also shown interest in recent days.

It adds that a move to Ibrox could be on the horizon for the £22k-per-week talent, but it does not reveal whether it would be a loan or permanent transfer.

What Frederic Guilbert could bring to Rangers

The experienced defender could arrive at Ibrox as an instant upgrade on Aarons in the right-back position for Martin, providing him with a defensively solid alternative to James Tavernier.

As aforementioned, Aarons has had an incredibly disappointing start to the season since his loan switch from the Cherries, and Guilbert could come in to offer more solidity in that area of the park.

The 30-year-old defender started 31 times in the Serie A for Lecce in the 2024/25 campaign, per Sofascore, and his performances in Italy suggest that he could be an upgrade for Rangers.

As you can see in the table above, Guilbert’s displays in the Italian top-flight were far more impressive, particularly defensively, than Aarons’ have been so far in the Premiership this season.

Aarons only played 209 minutes in the Premier League and LaLiga for Bournemouth and Valencia combined last season, as both teams decided that he was not good enough to play regular football in either division or country.

O clube alviverde não divulgou o por quanto tempo o atleta ficará afastado dos gramados, mas o tempo de recuperação para um estiramento no joelho varia de duas semanas a um mês. Na temporada passada, Jailson rompeu o ligamento cruzado do joelho direito e ficou afastado por oito meses.

Após um dia de folga, a comissão de Abel Ferreira realizou dois trabalhos simultâneos para o elenco alviverde. Em uma metade do campo, foi colocada em prática uma atividade técnica com dois times de sete componentes e com a permissão de poucos toques na bola por atleta.

Na outra metade, os jogadores foram orientados a focar na construção de jogadas e quebras de linha, usando como referências estacas posicionadas ao longo do gramado.

Com 22 pontos, o Palmeiras é o vice-líder do Brasileirão, dois pontos atrás do Botafogo. O Verdão irá medir forças com o Glorioso no dia 25 de junho, e o clube já divulgou o preço dos ingressos.
