Ekitike 2.0: Newcastle plotting move for "chaotic" £65m Wissa alternative

Newcastle United know two things: they are set to continue their wonderful journey with Alexander Isak fronting Eddie Howe’s project; Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike will not join them, and instead is set for Liverpool.

It’s a funny one to dissect. On one hand, United have likely missed out on another top target in the final third; Ekitike is a young striker with vast potential, talent scout Jacek Kulig even claiming he “could definitely reach world-class striker levels.”

However, if Liverpool reach their quarry, they are effectively eliminated from any future chase concerning Isak.

The Sweden striker is world-class, but Newcastle still need to sign a number nine with Callum Wilson having left Tyneside at the end of his contract.

Newcastle want new striker

With Ekitike seemingly off the cards, Newcastle have set their sights on Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, who scored 20 goals in 2024/25.

Wissa, 28, is valued at £50m and has been confirmed as Howe’s new top target by The Athletic’s David Ornstein. However, with Bryan Mbeumo set to sign for Manchester United, the Magpies might want to find an alternative.

And they have done so. According to Sport BILD, Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez has been lined up by the PIF bosses in a shocking twist. The 25-year-old is expected to leave Jürgen Klopp’s squad this summer, with Saudi Arabian interest being heavy, and the striker is valued in the region of £65m.

Fabrizio Romano has since chimed in to note that Newcastle have not engaged in any talks concerning Nunez, although he didn’t shut the door on a potential move.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

It might not be the most popular track Newcastle could head down, but there’s meaning in the madness. Nunez’s prime years are ostensibly ahead of him, and he’s younger and more malleable than Wissa.

Howe, more to the point, is one of the sharpest tactical minds out there.

Why Newcastle are considering Darwin Nunez

Make no mistake, this would be quite the peculiar finish to a transfer saga with more twists than a high-octane thriller novel. Certainly, few would see this one coming.

However, Nunez is a maverick, one of the most talented strikers in the Premier League, if not one of the most consistent. Noted for his “chaotic” energy by The Athletic’s Christopher Hamill, the Uruguayan has spent three years on English shores, and he’s been something of a mixed bag.

Missed chances have been a common theme, with 55 such chances squandered in spite of his modest 25-goal return, as per Sofascore, in the Premier League, but he’s also posted a decent return of 66 goal contributions across 143 appearances in a Liverpool shirt, including just 76 starting roles.

Say what you want, but 40 goals and 26 assists marks not a decent haul across 76 starts. The ingredients for success are there.

Liverpool'sDarwinNunezreacts

It’s worth noting that Nunez’s finishing improved somewhat last season too. He missed eight big chances in the Premier League last term, converting five strikes.

This, at the very least, illustrates a slight upturn in his shooting, something Howe would be sure to work on with him.

And, of course, St. James’ Park has suffered the bitter taste of how effective Nunez can be when on his A-game.

Howe might provide the helping hand Nunez needs to escape from a sorry situation at Anfield, with Newcastle offering the perfect recourse to lift him back up and into the sphere which he has demonstrated is within his grasp.

Nunez’s pace, power and dynamism certainly suggest that he could be United’s own version of Ekitike, and one who might come back to sting the Reds at that. Howe’s flowing, transitional system could offer the conditions Nunez needs to thrive.

Last season was one of individual strife for the striker, but he showed much promise in 2023/24, under Jurgen Klopp’s wing. Across 54 matches, he scored 18 goals and supplied 15 assists for his teammates.

As you can see, Nunez could more than hold his own in terms of output and performance, if you were to collate the data from the respective campaigns.

But it’s difficult to delineate the specifics, for the circumstances differ. However, Ekitike has not yet plied his trade in the Premier League, and Nunez could offer Newcastle something dynamic and similar to complement Isak, who is surely set to stay now.

Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike

And Ekitike, in any case, is hardly the finished product himself. The 23-year-old scored 12 goals and laid on 12 assists last season, but his finishing and accuracy leave something to be desired even so.

Drawing on FBref’s data again, the Frenchman totalled 0.66 per 90’s worth of xG (expected goals) across all competitions last season, though he scored at a rate of 0.51.

This highlights the improvements needed. His finishing requires sharpening, and the intensity and roughness of the English game may yet foil him in his endeavours.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

It’s a left-field one, for sure, but the Magpies could do worse, and Nunez has shown the makings of a special striker in England before.

He would also arrive to serve as Isak’s understudy, to challenge him and complement him. The Liverpool star, in this sense, wouldn’t have to worry about the weight of succeeding the Swede from the off, but rather, to learn from him and help him.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Whether Howe opts for the more clinical and secure name in Wissa remains to be seen, but signing Liverpool’s wantaway striker could complete a sense of circularity about this gripping transfer saga, and one which may just see Howe come up trumps.

Wyatt-Hodge sets up Hurricanes' record chase, Renegades' spinners flatten Scorchers

Grace Harris had cut loose for defending champions Brisbane Heat but it wasn’t enough while the second game of the day provided an upset

. “Just play attacking cricket but being smart about it. I thought that was probably about par. We knew we could chase that if we put our minds to it and get our heads down. Me and Lizzie just wanted to make the most of the powerplay and stick to our strengths … keep things simple and play aggressive cricket.”Lee’s dismissal for 38 failed to curb the momentum of Wyatt-Hodge, who struck six fours and three sixes in her game-changing innings. Heat removed Nicola Carey, victim to a sensational catch from Nadine de Klerk, and Wyatt-Hodge then continued to rally, leaving Hobart with a tricky equation of 33 runs from the final three overs.Legspinner Grace Parsons’ economical haul of 1 for 15 from four overs, including the all-important scalp of Wyatt-Hodge, gave Heat genuine hope of victory. But Elyse Villani’s reverse-swept boundary, her second four in a dramatic final over delivered by Charli Knott, secured the win.Courtney Webb led Melbourne Renegades’ chase•Getty Images

Melbourne Renegades’ comfortable triumph over Perth Scorchers could prove one of the shocks of this season. Beaten in both of their opening games and wooden-spooners last year, Renegades bowled superbly to have heavyweights Scorchers all out for 140.Sophie Molineux was particularly brilliant with a tournament-best 4 for 17 from her four overs, bowling Amy Jones and Chloe Piparo in the middle before helping clean up the tail. All 10 of the Scorchers’ wickets fell to spin, with Hayley Matthews, Alice Capsey and Georgia Wareham taking two each as the pressure continually told.Beth Mooney hit 36 up top for the Scorchers, but after she fell trying to scoop Capsey it was only Alana King (26 off 15) that truly got going.Renegades then made light work of the chase, with Courtney Webb hitting Chloe Ainsworth over the long-on rope in the first over and taking 12 off the next from spinner Lilly Mills. In her 79th WBBL match, Webb finished with her highest score of 61, dominating a 102-run opening stand with Matthews that helped Renegades to victory with 14 balls to spare. The result leaves Sydney Thunder top of the ladder ahead of Heat with two wins and one loss, while two-time defending champions Adelaide Strikers are last with a 1-2 record early in the shortened 10-round season.

Everton make first approach to sign "great" ace who just outscored Grealish

Still on the hunt for reinforcements after confirming the arrival of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Everton have now reportedly made their first approach to sign a Serie A winger.

Latest on Jack Grealish to Everton

After Dewsbury-Hall, Everton seemingly returned straight to the transfer market in an attempt to land further upgrades. And the name that they have since stumbled upon is Jack Grealish. The Manchester City winger desperately needs to leave the Etihad and those at the Hill Dickinson Stadium could now provide him with the perfect opportunity to depart this month.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Everton have offered Manchester City a straight loan for Grealish without an option to buy. It’s a deal that would see them opt out of any mandatory fee, but also one that could see them miss out on a permanent deal for the winger in a frustrating blow if he rediscovered his best form in Merseyside.

Having already signed Dewsbury-Hall, Carlos Alcaraz and Thierno Barry, Grealish’s arrival would likely complete Everton’s much-needed attacking overhaul. Given that both the Chelsea midfielder and the Man City man would be from the Premier League’s top six, too, the Toffees’ summer would suddenly begin to look more and more impressive.

Welcoming Dewsbury-Hall after he put pen to paper, David Moyes told the club’s official website: “We are pleased that Kiernan has chosen to join Everton. He had other clubs interested in signing him but he was excited by the opportunity and the challenge at Everton.”

Everton make first approach to sign Gonzalez

With that said, as their search to complete their attacking overhaul continues, Grealish is not the only name on The Friedkin Group’s list. According to TuttoSport, as relayed by Sport Witness, Everton have now made their first approach to sign Nico Gonzalez from Juventus this summer. The Serie A winger has been granted his exit and it’s now the Toffees and Fulham who have made initial enquiries for his signature.

Like Grealish, the 27-year-old is already thinking about his World Cup place one year in advance and knows that game time will be key to ensuring that he’s in the squad for Argentina’s first defence of the trophy.

When compared, it’s easy to see why Gonzalez has found himself on Everton’s shortlist alongside Grealish. It is, however, also clear that Grealish is the standout option due to his creativity in possession.

Everton are looking for plenty more new signings this summer

ByJoe Nuttall Aug 7, 2025

Despite earning praise from manager Igor Tudor for his “strong” desire and “great availability”, Gonzalez’s output compared to the minutes that he played last season do not make for pretty reading. On paper, the Argentine outscored Grealish, but if the latter enjoyed similar game time then it may well have been a different story.

Birmingham backed to sign "proven goalscorer" who Wenger wanted at Arsenal

Former Birmingham City winger Jermaine Pennant has backed the Blues to make a “clever signing” after the club registered their interest in a deal earlier this month.

Chris Davies and Co have been hard at work this summer, improving the squad with fresh faces in order to mount an Ipswich-esque charge on back to back promotions.

The Blues romped to the League One title last season and have added several exciting signings to a squad already brimming with quality, with former Celtic superstar Kyogo Furuhashi the pick of the bunch while the return of Demarai Gray will get fans off their seats.

Birmingham signings: in pictures

Perhaps the one area still in need of reinforcements is the number nine department, with Tyler Roberts not an out and out striker and Kyogo more of a versatile forward who floats between roles, leaving Jay Stansfield with a lot of responsibility to stay fit and firing.

Indeed, earlier this month reports revealed the Blues are moving to rectify that situation with an approach for Leicester legend Jamie Vardy, who is a free agent after his contract with the Foxes expired earlier this summer.

Pennant backs Blues to sign Vardy

Speaking to Football FanCast on behalf of Adventure Gamers, former Birmingham winger Pennant backed a move for Vardy due to the experience and goal threat he could provide off the bench.

Vardy’s goalscoring record and longevity is indeed remarkable, racking up 244 career goals for club and country, including nine in the top flight last season despite Leicester’s perilous form.

At his peak, the 38 year-old’s tireless running in behind was bordering on unstoppable, leading Arsene Wenger to try and sign him for Arsenal after being pipped to the Premier League title by the Vardy-led Foxes.

“I offered him a lot of money at the time,” Wenger said back in 2021. “Leicester had just won the championship at the time in 2016, and they absolutely did not want to lose him and offered him a longer contract with approximately the same money if not more.

“He is always in the game. He doesn’t look like he mentally gets out of the game and the great strikers are like that. It means he will score at some stage. Even when he misses a chance he stays in the game.”

Vardy’s record in the Championship suggests he would have no problem adapting to a new role at St Andrews either, scoring or assisting 54 times in 98 appearances in the competition.

Rohit wants to expand India's fast-bowling bench strength

Rohit Sharma wants to injury-proof the Indian cricket team, and has called for expanding their bench strength, particularly the fast-bowling department so that they have eight or nine players ready to step into the first XI at any given moment.”We want to create a bench strength where tomorrow if anything happens to anyone, we are not worried, and we don’t want to be worried or too heavily reliant on a few individuals. That’s not the right thing to do,” Rohit said on the eve of the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru. “We want to look at the future at the same time, try and make sure that we get the right guys in as well.”We want to create guys where even if there are injuries, we have got someone to quickly step in and take that role.”It’s not about three or four options. We want to try and do that like, you know, when it comes to batting, there are a lot of options. We want to create the same with the bowlers as well.”Along with the 15-member squad for the three-match series against New Zealand, India are also carrying Harshit Rana, Mayank Yadav and Nitish Kumar Reddy as travelling reserves. Mayank and Reddy recently made their international debuts in the T20Is against Bangladesh recently, while Rana was an unused member of that squad.Related

Prasidh Krishna was also initially named as a travelling reserve for the New Zealand Tests, but he has reportedly suffered another injury setback. During Karnataka’s opening fixture of the new Ranji Trophy season, against Madhya Pradesh in Indore, he bowled only eight of the 140 overs that his side sent down.”You know, the reason we wanted to keep them close to us was because we are thinking of them to take them to Australia,” Rohit said. The five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy begins on November 22. “We just want to monitor them and see their workload. We have seen some talent in them. I understand that they have not played a lot of red-ball cricket, but when you see a talent, you want to try and groom them.Harshit Rana, 22, has played nine first-class matches and picked up 36 wickets•PTI

“You want to try and bring them as close to the team as possible. And in a short period of time, they have shown they have some ability as well. So, we want to keep them with the team and see whether they will be ready for international cricket or not, especially Test cricket, because Test cricket is a different ball game compared to white ball cricket. So, we want to keep them, we want to see what they can offer us, and have more options with us, more than anything else.”Nitish and Harshit both obviously are quite talented individuals, and in the future obviously they are going to provide a lot of stability to the team. So, just want to see what they are capable of, what they have to offer.”Mayank’s rise has been both rapid and eye-catching. He burst on the scene during IPL 2024, bowling at speeds of 155kph, and accurately at that, for Lucknow Super Giants. He could only play four matches though with an abdominal issue keeping him sidelined. Still, India had seen enough to fast-track him into their T20 side against Bangladesh earlier this month, where he picked up four wickets from three games while consistently pushing the speed gun into the high 140kph.”Mayank obviously has shown what he can do, but we just want to be very careful with him, he has had a lot of injuries in the past,” Rohit said. “So, we want to progress him, not rapidly, we want to just see every day how he feels.”We are trying to build his workloads with the red ball. He has not played a lot of red-ball cricket at all. So, for us, it’s important that we try and build them gradually, rather than just getting them into international cricket straight away.”T20 format is such where you can get a lot of these guys and see what they are capable of and if they can handle the international exposure. But Test cricket is a different ball game. The pressure is different. You have to sustain for five days, that’s the most important thing. So, we are trying to monitor them and see, you know, what they can offer to us.”3:36

Rohit: Bumrah has always been in our leadership group

The most important cog in India’s fast-bowling line-up is the leader of the pack Jasprit Bumrah. The 30-year-old was recently named vice-captain for the series against New Zealand. There is a chance Bumrah might step in as captain in the early Tests against Australia next month with Rohit’s participation in doubt owing to personal reasons.”He’s always been part of that leadership group and one of the experienced players as well,” Rohit said of Bumrah. “He’s played a lot of cricket and I’ve played a lot of cricket with him. He understands the game pretty well. He’s got a good head on his shoulders.”Tactically, I can’t say much because he’s not captained much. But, when you talk to him, he understands the game. He understands what is required. When you are in a situation where you need a leader to step up, I think Bumrah will be one of them. In the past, he’s always been in our leadership group.”So, it’s probably the right thing to just have him around and speak to the bowlers and internally discuss how to take the team forward.”Rohit remained tight-lipped about the India XI for the opening Test against New Zealand stating that they will take a call once they reach the venue on match day. It has been raining relentlessly in Bengaluru over the last few days, forcing India to cancel their training session on the eve of the game, while New Zealand were left to train indoors.”It all depends on the conditions now. Even today, there has been a lot of rain. The pitch is under the covers. So, we want to take that call when we come here in the morning tomorrow,” Rohit said. “And again, it depends on match-to-match, what sort of pitch we play on. Based on that, we want to decide what is going to be our best playing XI. We keep our options open for playing three seamers and three spinners as well.”

Sunderland reach agreement to sign 6'3 star in £12m deal; medical scheduled

With Granit Xhaka now officially a Sunderland player, the Black Cats have already reportedly reached an agreement to sign another reinforcement in a deal worth £12m.

Xhaka "very proud" to join Black Cats

In their biggest deal of the summer so far, Xhaka is set to provide Sunderland with an invincible Bundesliga winner and former Arsenal man at the heart of Regis Le Bris’ midfield.

This isn’t the same Swiss midfielder that left Arsenal following a tumultuous relationship with fans and several moments to both savour and forget. Instead, this is a far more confident, complete version of Xhaka ready to end unfinished business in the Premier League.

“I’m very proud to be here. When I spoke to the Club, I was excited and I felt the energy, and the mentality that all the people and players have,” the Swiss legend said on Wednesday.

“It’s exactly what I wanted, and I have a very good feeling. We are back to where this club needs to be, and we want to stay here to write our own history.”

Liverpool’s hefty spending aside, it is Sunderland who have arguably enjoyed the best transfer window of the summer in the Premier League when taking into account prior expectations. Xhaka follows the likes of Simon Adingra, Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki through the door to take the Black Cats’ number of incomings to seven in total.

Le Bris will be well aware of the talent that he’s welcoming in Xhaka. The former Arsenal man earned plenty of praise when working with Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen as they achieved history together and that praise is only likely to be reiterated by the Sunderland boss.

Finally replace Jobe: Sunderland make contact over "incredible" £26m star

Sunderland could be about to replace Jobe Bellingham by signing this entertaining £26m ace.

By
Kelan Sarson

Jul 30, 2025

Alonso told reporters: “He has had a huge impact on the team since day one. He is an extremely important player for us. If you have good midfielders, you play better.”

It’s the type of signing which could see Sunderland finally end the recent trend of promoted sides falling at the first hurdle back in the Premier League. But even after Xhaka, the Black Cats still reportedly have unfinished business in the transfer market as Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Kristjaan Speakman go into overdrive.

Sunderland now set to sign Robin Roefs

As reported by The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Sunderland have now reached an agreement to sign Robin Roefs from NEC Nijmegen in a deal worth €13.5m (£12m) with add-ons.

The 6’3 goalkeeper will hand Le Bris the reliable pair of hands he has been craving at the Stadium of Light, with a medical already scheduled to take place ahead of Roef’s official arrival.

Although Anthony Patterson may feel hard done by to lose his starting place in Wearside, Roefs enjoyed an even more impressive campaign last time out in the Eredivisie and outperformed Sunderland’s shot-stopper in the process.

At just 22 years old, there’s every chance that the Dutchman only gets better with time despite already performing at an impressive standard. Alongside Xhaka, Roefs represents the type of signing needed to survive in the Premier League and so much more.

The Black Cats have made statement signing after statement signing this summer, but may have just agreed deals for their two most impressive arrivals so far in Xhaka and Roefs.

Sunderland now make enquiry to sign "elite" £23m+ attacker ahead of Leeds

Sunderland are believed to be looking to sign an “elite” attacking player during the summer transfer window ahead of rivals Leeds United.

Sunderland agree Alderete fee

It has been a relentless summer for the Black Cats in the market, with Regis Le Bris adding a huge amount of depth to his squad ahead of their return to the Premier League.

The latest addition for Sunderland looks likely to be Getafe defender Omar Alderete, with a £10m deal reportedly agreed to sign the 28-year-old. The Paraguayan started 34 La Liga matches last season, proving to be a key man, winning an average of three aerial duels per game.

Black Cats supporters will certainly be hoping that the club’s summer business still isn’t done there, however, with Sevilla centre-back Loic Bade also strongly linked with a move to Stadium of Light in recent days.

Now, a new name has been thrown into the mix for Sunderland, as they look to bring in additional quality at the other end of the pitch ahead of their Premier League opener at home to West Ham on Saturday.

Sunderland make contact to sign Leeds striker target

According to Il Messaggero [via Sport Witness], Sunderland have made an approach for Roma forward Artem Dovbyk ahead of fellow promoted side Leeds United.

The 28-year-old is wanted by both promoted Premier League clubs, and West Ham, with his current club demanding over £23m for his signature this summer, with the Black Cats making an enquiry.

Dovbyk is an experienced attacker who could add much-needed firepower to Sunderland’s squad, having scored 17 goals in 45 appearances for Roma, not to mention 11 in 36 caps for Ukraine.

The attacking ace is right in his peak years, so it wouldn’t be a case of the Black Cats signing a youngster who is still maturing, and journalist Zach Lowy has described him as an “elite” player.

“Victor Osimhen is going to be the most pursued center forward this summer but I don’t think Artem Dovbyk will be too far behind. He’s approaching the prime of his career as a CF and has proven to be not just a fantastic finisher, but an elite target man with link-up ability too.”

If Sunderland were able to beat Leeds and West Ham to Dovbyk’s signature, it would feel like an added bonus, especially in terms of getting the better of one of the other promoted sides from last season, as they have already done with midfielders Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki.

Sunderland are "very hot" in pursuit of "elite" £30m Europa League winner

It’s a potential big boost for Regis Le Bris.

ByHenry Jackson Aug 11, 2025

Plenty of goal threat is needed if Le Bris’ men are to stand a good chance of avoiding a return to the Championship, and Dovbyk could be a strong addition to aid that issue.

PTI06-Dec-2024Vaibhav Suryavanshi starred with a second successive half-century as India stormed into the Under-19 Asia Cup final with a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in Sharjah on Friday. The 13-year-old, who became the youngest cricketer ever to be bought at an IPL auction last month, smashed five sixes and six fours for his 36-ball 67 as India chased down a target of 174 with as many as 170 balls to spare.India will face Bangladesh in the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.Related

Bangladesh defeated Pakistan by seven wickets, completing a chase of 117 in 22.1 overs in the first semi-final in Dubai.Opting to bat, Sri Lanka could only manage 173 in 46.2 overs despite a valiant effort from Lakvin Abeysinghe (69 off 110) and Sharujan Shanmuganathan (42 off 78).Their innings struggled to gain momentum but Indian bowlers were in full control with Chetan Sharma (3 for 34), Kiran Chormale (2 for 32), and Ayush Mhatre (2 for 37) wreaking havoc in the middle overs.Ayush Mhatre’s 34 off 28 laid a solid foundation for the chase as he put on a stand of 91 with Suryavanshi for the opening wicket. The young left-hander from Bihar troubled the Sri Lankan bowlers from the beginning as he started with consecutive sixes and a boundary off Sigera, who ended up giving away 31 runs in his opening over.Mhatre too played his strokes at the other end as the duo raced to 87 for no loss in eight overs before Vihas Thewmika gave Sri Lanka their first breakthrough by removing the batter. But Suryavanshi kept the run rate ticking despite losing his opening partner, forging another crucial association with C Andre Siddharth (22).He didn’t stop there, taking the attack to the bowlers with his aggressive strokes, including scoring two sixes off Aayan Khan. Captain Mohamed Amaan (25 not out) and KP Karthikeya (11 not out) then completed the chase.
