Celtic star just proved why Rodgers needs to sign £6m+ replacement

Celtic continued their impressive start to the 2024/25 campaign with a convincing 2-0 win over Hibernian away from Parkhead on Sunday afternoon.

The Hoops sit top of the Scottish Premiership after two matches, having won both of their games, and are yet to concede a single goal in the division.

Kasper Schmeichel, who was brought in on a free transfer to replace Joe Hart after his retirement from professional football, has kept two clean sheets in his first two matches for the club.

Early goals from Nicolas Kuhn and Callum McGregor ensured that the Bhoys enjoyed a comfortable afternoon, with the former converting from close range before teeing up the captain to fire the ball into the far corner from 25 yards.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers applauds the fans.

There was also a second Celtic debut for Paulo Bernardo against Hibernian. The Portuguese midfielder came off the bench for the first time since his permanent move from Benfica was confirmed earlier this month, having spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan in Glasgow.

One thing that should be taken away from this match, however, is that the Scottish giants must dip into the market to secure a new centre-forward, after a difficult game for Kyogo Furuhashi.

Kyogo Furuhashi's struggles

The Japan international is the club's only senior striker option and was selected to lead the line, with Kuhn and James Forrest either side of him.

Unfortunately, it was a frustrating afternoon for the 29-year-old centre-forward. He has now gone 15 away matches in the Premiership without finding the back of the net, stretching back to last season.

The experienced attacker failed to find the back of the net with any of his four efforts in 75 minutes on the pitch on Sunday, which comes after his two 'big chances' missed and zero goals scored on the opening day against Kilmarnock.

As you can see in the table above, Kyogo was wasteful with the chances that came his way and offered very little in build-up or out of possession.

His saved shot did allow Forrest to follow up to assist Kuhn for the opener but the striker took that shot on from distance despite the German forward being in a fantastic position for a pass to his right.

James Forrest

Kyogo's struggles in front of goal at the start of this term should not be a surprise, as he also left a lot to be desired from his finishing last season.

The right-footed dud missed a staggering 24 'big chances' and only found the back of the net 14 times in 38 Premiership appearances in the 2023/24 campaign.

His latest poor showing in the final third, at least when it came to his finishing, proves that Celtic must do everything they can to bring Adam Idah back to the club.

Celtic's pursuit of Adam Idah

Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph reported last Friday that the Scottish giants are in advanced talks to sign the Norwich City centre-forward.

The reporter claimed that the two teams have been discussing a potential deal that would be £6m+, with an initial fee of £6m along with add-ons to take it beyond that.

Joseph added that, whilst no agreement has been reached, there is a 'willingness' from both sides to get a move over the line before the end of the window.

Despite that news, Idah was involved in Norwich's opening day defeat against Oxford United, playing 29 minutes off the bench in a 2-0 defeat.

After the win over Hibs, Brendan Rodgers revealed that there is no fresh update to report on their pursuit of the 6 foot 3 marksman, which suggests that the talks are still ongoing as they look to reach a positive conclusion.

This latest performance from Kyogo may help to speed up those conversations in order to bring him to Parkhead, as the club's current centre-forward continues to struggle in front of goal.

The fact that Mikey Johnston, a winger who was out on loan at West Bromwich Albion in the second half of last season, was selected to play as the number nine off the bench perfectly illustrates their need for a new number nine.

Why Celtic must sign Adam Idah

Celtic have won their first two league games of the season, scoring six goals and keeping two clean sheets, but Kyogo's finishing woes may eventually cause them problems when the bigger games come around – whether that be against Rangers or in the Champions League.

Idah spent the second half of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Parkhead from the Canaries and caught the eye with his impressive finishing quality.

The Irish star showcased his versatile finishing skills with three goals with his head, one with his left foot, and four with his right foot in the Premiership, which shows a strong variety of strikes from the attacker.

Idah also showed glimpses of having the potential to be a clutch finisher for the Hoops, with an 87th-minute strike that put Celtic 3-2 up against Rangers at Ibrox, and a 90th-minute goal against the Gers to win the League Cup for his side.

His performances in the Premiership were particularly impressive and suggested that the quality is there for him to offer more in front of goal than Kyogo.

As you can see in the table above, Idah only missed seven 'big chances' and scored eight goals, compared to the Japanese forward's 24 spurned 'big chances' and 14 strikes.

These statistics indicate that the Norwich youngster, if he can continue that form, could return to Glasgow and offer a more clinical edge in the number nine position for Rodgers.

Newcastle believe their £60m offer for England star is about to be accepted

Newcastle United are confident in seeing their latest offer for an England star accepted, as they continue to strengthen their side for the campaign ahead. The Magpies are preparing for their opening Premier League game this weekend as they welcome Southampton to St. James’ Park on Saturday.

Newcastle will be disappointed with how last season panned out, so everyone at the club will be looking to improve on those standings and possibly end their drought for a trophy.

Latest Newcastle United injury news, return dates and suspensions

FFC keeps you up to date with all the latest Newcastle news involving injuries as they face Sheffield United in the Premier League.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Apr 26, 2024 Newcastle United transfer news

Eddie Howe will be keen to see his side get off to a good start, and the aim this season will be to fight for a place in Europe alongside some domestic cup runs. The fact that Newcastle are not in Europe this season could have had an impact on their summer transfer window, as the club hasn’t been as busy as probably expected.

The Premier League side have brought in five new arrivals, but one of them is defender Lewis Hall, who was at the club last season, and another is goalkeeper John Ruddy on a free transfer.

Therefore, there could be anticipation from Newcastle supporters that the club will continue to be busy right up until that August deadline. Chelsea’s Noni Madueke has emerged as someone of interest to Newcastle in recent days, with the Blues potentially looking to move the player on.

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke

While it has also been claimed by Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke that Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga is someone who has emerged on Newcastle’s shortlist as they look to improve their attacking options. However, either deal may have to wait, as Newcastle prioritises wrapping up a deal for a Premier League defender.

Newcastle now confident latest Guehi bid will be accepted

According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle are increasingly confident in getting a deal done for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. Romano states that a new proposal has been sent to the London side, and negotiations are continuing between the two clubs, but vitally suggests the Magpies believe their latest bid will get the job done.

England defender Marc Guehi

The Magpies have already seen two bids rejected for the defender, who played a starring role in England’s run to the Euro 2024 semi-finals. Now the club have made a third offer, and according to the Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel, the fresh offer is worth an initial £55 million, which rises to £60 million depending on payment add-ons.

He goes on to add that the previous offer from Newcastle was in the region of £48 million, rising to beyond £50 million.

Guehi has been with Palace since July 2021, when he joined the club from fellow Premier League side Chelsea. The 24-year-old has been a key component in Palace’s defence for a few years now, and given his performances for the South London side and England during the summer, it isn’t much of a surprise that teams such as Newcastle are looking to sign him.

The centre-back has two years left on his current contract at Selhurst Park, so this transfer window may represent the best time to cash in on a valuable asset.

Marc Guehi’s 2023/24 season for Crystal Palace

Last season was the first time since joining Palace that Guehi failed to play more than 30 games in the Premier League for the club. His first two seasons saw the 24-year-old play 36 times and then 37 times, but in the 2023/24 campaign, the defender played 25 times, as well as another four games in the FA Cup and EFL Cup combined.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

It shouldn't really count as news at this point, but Kane bagged yet another hat-trick for Bayern Munich on Friday night, something which is becoming a boring spectacle for anyone who isn't English or a Bayern Munich fan.

The sight has become so frequent that instead of having to think about different celebrations for individual goals, Kane now has to come up with varied celebrations following a hat trick as well.

Jamal Musiala hilariously impersonated Kane's predictable post-hat-trick behaviour following another triple for the Englishman in October, and Kane has obviously been brewing over that for the last three weeks or so, as he made a point of mentioning Musiala in his post-match video uploaded to his Instagram.

Kane's hat-trick against Augsburg saw Bayern move eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, with Red Bull Leipzig sitting in second on 21 points. A goal difference of +29, it is nearly triple that of the next closest team, and Kane's goal have played a significant part in that. He already has 14 in the league, three ahead of second-placed Omar Marmoush.

WHAT NEXT FOR KANE AND BAYERN?

With a comfortable cushion at the top of the league, Bayern seem to be coasting to the Bundesliga title, but tougher fixtures lie ahead. French champions Paris Saint-Germain visit the Allianz arena on Tuesday night for a Champions League fixture, before they play Borussia Dortmund and last season's invincible champions Bayer Leverkusen in the space of four days. Should they come through those fixtures with their track record unblemished, then they will be on track for the league title they failed to grasp last season, with Kane winning his first piece of major European silverware in the process..

Tasmania agree to leave out Riley Meredith for 'greater good' due to border restrictions

Tasmania have agreed not to play quick bowler Riley Meredith in their Marsh Cup match against Victoria in Melbourne on Wednesday because of the potential impact on Victoria’s onward schedule for the season.Victoria travel to Perth later this month, and Western Australia currently has closed borders to New Zealand where Meredith has just been with the Australia T20I squad.Although Meredith is under no restrictions in Victoria – which along with New South Wales and Tasmania has a one-way travel bubble to New Zealand except for Auckland – it has been agreed he will sit out the game to ensure the season can continue as planned.”If Riley was to play in this match it would impact the Victorian squad being able to travel to Perth for their upcoming fixtures against Western Australia, and so, for the greater good of the season being completed as planned, Tasmania has agreed to not select him for this match,” Cricket Tasmania said in a statement.Related

Meredith impressed in his first international series, pushing the speed gun towards 150kph and twice claiming Kane Williamson lbw.The situation highlights the ongoing complexities of putting the season together during a summer that has continually navigated Covid-19 restrictions. The Sheffield Shield, Marsh Cup and WNCL are not operating in the hubs and bubbles used for the first part of the season, the two BBL tournaments and the internationals.Chris Rogers, the Victoria coach, touched on the challenges when discussing the possible inclusion of Glenn Maxwell in their Sheffield Shield squad. Queensland, where Victoria play their next match, also has closed borders to New Zealand which could prevent Maxwell being selected although he may have been rested in any case. The resumption of Victoria’s season needed government exemptions for them to play in Sydney after Melbourne went back into a brief lockdown early in February.Meanwhile, Tasmania are also waiting to find out if Ben McDermott will be available again this season after he suffered a hamstring strain in training during the T20I tour. “He has since returned to Tasmania and is undergoing tests to determine whether he will be fit before the end of the season,” the state said.Matthew Wade, who would have been in the same situation as Meredith for the game in Victoria, is not part of the squad with the decision already taken that he would be rested following the New Zealand tour.

He’s won the Premier League: West Ham could sign instant Rodriguez upgrade

One area West Ham have already bolstered ahead of Julen Lopetegui's first season in charge is the midfield department, bringing Guido Rodriguez in on a free transfer.

In Lopetegui's system, the need for comfortability on the ball is apparent, and West Ham have done their best to address that this window in the defensive line, and adding Rodriguez in midfield. Having midfielders that can affect the game both offensively and defensively is important, as they can join both first phase build up, and last phase attacks.

guido-rodriguez-real-betis

Rodriguez made 29 appearances in all competitions last season for Real Betis, scoring two goals, providing one assist, and contributing to eight clean sheets in his 2,241 minutes played.

West Ham to sign another midfielder?

According to Fabrizio Romano West Ham have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of ex-Chelsea midfielder, N’Golo Kante, amid recent links. The Frenchman currently earns over £400k-per-week in Saudi Arabia, which West Ham wouldn't be able to replicate.

France midfielder N'Golo Kante

Atlético Madrid has also shown an interest in recent days, with Romano reporting that Al-Ittihad's stance remains the same, "not for sale".

Kante made 44 appearances for Al Ittihad last season in all competitions, scoring four goals, providing six assists, and contributing to 15 clean sheets in his 3,822 minutes played.

Kante vs Rodriguez comparison

The 33-year-old Kante and 29-year-old Rodriguez would both bring a wealth of experience to this West Ham side, having both captained their sides at one stage last season.

Of course, one thing Kante has over Rodriguez is Premier League experience, having played the majority of his career in the league, winning multiple league titles and individual honours throughout 227 outings.

Kante made his last Premier League appearance on the 5th June 2023, providing an assist in a 3-1 victory for Chelsea over Bournemouth. Despite only managing ten games in that season, some of Kante's per 90 numbers were still brilliant.

It's important to note, Kante's stats above are based on 772 minutes of football in the 2022/23 season. However, the stats do not seem to be skewed compared to his prior season at Chelsea, where he completed 2,546 minutes and achieved better per 90 metrics in many areas.

Once described as "Yaya Toure and Claude Makelele rolled into one" by Wayne Rooney, you can definitely see elements of both in this game and in the metrics. Averaging 3.86 progressive carries per 90, adding that thrust from midfield as Toure did.

But also, his 8.82 ball recoveries per 90, 2.50 tackles per 90, and 1.71 blocks, show his ability to consistently complete defensive actions, protecting his teams' backline and covering ground like no other.

As good as Rodriguez is, actually ranking fairly closely to Kante in some metrics (especially defensively). the France star would offer an unbelievable dynamic to the Hammers midfield, being able to progress the ball via his passing and carrying, but also protecting that defence and mopping things up in transition.

'I don't think it is going to be his final year' – CSK CEO on MS Dhoni

Also says Ravindra Jadeja is “looking good” at training on return from his thumb injury

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Apr-2021MS Dhoni is likely to remain part of the Chennai Super Kings set-up at IPL 2022, according to the franchise’s CEO, Kasi Viswanathan. Viswanathan also confirmed that allrounder Ravindra Jadeja, who left India’s tour of Australia early with a broken thumb and hasn’t played since then, is “looking good”.”I don’t think it is going to be his final year. This is my personal view and I don’t think we are looking at anybody now,” Viswanathan told the .This is not the first time Viswanathan has come out with such a statement. With doubts over Dhoni’s future in the game swirling ever since the end of the 2019 World Cup, he had said last August, “We can expect MS Dhoni to be part of both [IPL 2020 and 2021] and probably for even the next year – 2022.”Four days later, Dhoni retired from international cricket, and the Super Kings went on to have a woeful run at the 2020 IPL, finishing seventh out of eight teams in the UAE. Dhoni himself managed only 200 runs from 12 innings at a strike rate of 116.27 in the tournament. Questions of a complete overhaul of the Super Kings set-up naturally followed, prompting the question to be put to Viswanathan. On the topic of Jadeja, who had fractured his left thumb during India’s epic draw in the New Year’s Test in Sydney, Viswanathan said that while he might not have played cricket since that game, he has been training with the team and they are hopeful of him being fully match fit for their opening game, against Delhi Capitals on April 10. “See, Jadeja has been cleared [to play] by the NCA [National Cricket Academy],” he said. “He has joined our team for practice. He is looking good. He is working hard. And we are hoping that he will be fully fit by the time the IPL starts.”Viswanathan also said the Super Kings’ decision to pick Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara at the auction – his first IPL gig since 2014 – was partly down to wanting to “honour him” following his fine showing in Australia, but also because of his “calibre” as a batsman. The bid – at his base price of INR 50 lakh (USD 69,000 approx.) – drew attention given the tempo and style of his batting: his T20 strike rate stands at 109.35.”We also wanted to honour him, that’s for sure. But at the same time, I can tell you one thing, a person of his calibre with such good technique, he can adapt to any format,” Viswanathan said. “That is our view. He can be a player who can contribute a lot to CSK. That’s what we felt and that is the reason why we picked him.”He will certainly have a role to play, but I cannot say whether he will play the first game or the second game.”The Super Kings’ top officials throwing their weight behind Dhoni is not new. Last year, N Srinivasan, the vice-chairman and managing director of India Cements, owners of the Super Kings, had also indicated that Dhoni would be retained at the next mega auction, at the time scheduled for the lead-up to the 2021 edition. As part of the fallout of the pandemic, that has now been postponed by a year, and it remains to be seen whether Srinivasan’s opinion stands then.

In talks: Southampton moving to sign "amazing" Mara replacement

Southampton supporters will watch all the opening games in the Championship and the EFL this weekend pleased that they have to wait an extra week to get their competitive action underway, owing to their newly obtained Premier League status.

The Saints travel to Newcastle United in what will be an interesting opening day tie at St James' Park, with Southampton fans hopeful that Ben Brereton-Diaz could well score on his debut to help overcome the Magpies in shock fashion.

The adopted Chile international could well be joined by a new teammate in attack shortly, as Russell Martin's men show no signs of slowing down this hectic transfer window.

Southampton in talks with Belgian star

As per football journalist Sacha Tavolieri, via his social media, Southampton are in talks to try and tempt KAA Gent star Matias Fernandez-Pardo to the club this summer but will face a battle in trying to snap him up.

Lazio are also keen on the 19-year-old ace and have had a bid of £8.5m already rejected for his services, meaning it won't be straightforward for Martin and Co to land their desired target.

Sekou Mara

What Fernandez-Pardo could offer Southampton

Getting a deal over the line for the teenage star by the end of the frantic month could also signal the end of Sekou Mara in a Saints strip, with reports suggesting that the Frenchman – who struggled for consistency last campaign in the Championship – could now be off to Brest in his native country.

This would be somewhat of a blow, but one that would be very much softened if Fernandez-Pardo was to walk into the building, with the Saints gaining another sharpshooter to rival Brereton-Diaz's prowess.

The 19-year-old attacker was a revelation last campaign for his Jupiler Pro League employers, with his goal haul for the club now rising to nine from just 24 games after an electric individual season.

One league clash against Standard Liege would even see Fernandez-Pardo receive a 9.3/10 match rating via Sofascore, and it's clear to see why, with two goals and one assist in the contest from the standout Belgian helping Gent obliterate their divisional rivals 4-1.

Martin would love to have such a clinical finisher waiting in his wings, with Fernandez-Pardo notably shining in a clash vs Liege, firing home both of his on-target efforts, but the Gent ace could be turned more into a left wing option at St. Mary's, instead of lining up as an out-and-out striker.

Mara had to make do with also switching between duties down the flanks and up top last campaign and struggled to ever truly lay down a marker on the first-team, with just four starts handed to him all season long.

Whereas, the Gent number 26 has shone from both positions in the past, even though he has only started one senior game from down the left wing.

This versatility will be another reason why Martin is keen to add the exciting youngster to his group ahead of the new Premier League campaign, knowing that his options down both the right and left are limited.

Fernandez-Pardo would routinely line up next to the striker, as opposed to being the main centre-forward himself, when playing for the Belgium U19s in the past, with all three of the goals he's managed for his nation coming from playing out on the flanks.

The "amazing" talent – as he has been described by U23 football scout Antonio Mango when referring to the height of his goalscoring powers last season – undoubtedly has a big future in the game, and he could take the Premier League by storm under Martin's guidance.

Ahead of Liverpool facing Everton at Goodison Park this weekend, Reds legend Carragher was asked how many Everton players would make his all-time Merseyside starting XI for . The ex-defender said Alan Ball, Ray Wilson, and Neville Southall would make it in for the Toffees but didn't put which Liverpool players would be in there. After a fan claimed he was "downgrading" Salah, Carragher hit back on social media.
