Fabrizio Romano: Man Utd hold talks over £35m captain who Ten Hag loves

Manchester United have held Old Trafford talks over a deal to sign a new Premier League star, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Man Utd eyeing Casemiro replacement

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are preparing for their first summer transfer window in charge of the Red Devils and have recently decided that Erik ten Hag will remain as manager heading into the 2024/25 campaign.

The full focus will now be on the transfer market, with a new centre-back and striker appearing to be of interest to Ratcliffe and Ten Hag. Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial will officially depart at the end of the month, and there have been plenty of rumours about Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite and Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee.

Alongside a defender and forward, though, a midfielder could also be on the Old Trafford agenda, especially if Casemiro leaves. There have been plenty of rumours over an exit for the Brazilian, who has already said his Man Utd goodbyes following the FA Cup win over Manchester City.

Earlier this week, Romano said that Man Utd have been making enquiries over potentially signing a new midfielder: “I’m hearing that in the last 24-48 hours, [United] made some enquiries on the market over a new midfielder. They are exploring options in midfield especially in the case of Casemiro leaving, which remains a strong possibility.

“United are assessing options and have started to make moves to strengthen their midfield – we will see who it’s going to be and what United are going to do, but for sure they are going to be really busy in the next weeks, so keep an eye on potential new arrivals at centre-back, left-back, striker, and midfield.”

He didn’t mention any specific incoming names, until now.

Man Utd hold internal talks for West Ham’s Edson Alvarez

Taking to X on Wednesday evening, Romano once again stated that Man Utd are considering signing a replacement for Casemiro and have now held Old Trafford talks over a deal for West Ham United’s Edson Alvarez. Ten Hag is a fan of the Mexico captain, who is considered a “key player” at the London Stadium.

Alvarez made the move to England and West Ham in a £35m deal from Ajax last summer and went on to make 42 appearances in his first season for the Hammers, scoring two goals and providing two assists. The holding midfielder did pick up a whopping 17 yellow cards, which resulted in two separate Premier League suspensions and one in the Europa League.

As can be seen, Alvarez outshone Casemiro in a number of areas last season, so the 26-year-old, who made more than 100 appearances under Ten Hag at Ajax, could prove to be a shrewd signing. Whether or not the Red Devils firm up their interest with a bid remains to be seen, but it looks as if a deal is one to keep an eye on.

Petit says £209,000-per-week star could be the perfect signing for Arsenal

Emmanuel Petit has urged Arsenal to make what he believes is the perfect signing for Mikel Arteta, after watching the player in question for many years.

Benjamin Sesko rejects move with striker search ongoing

Before the Slovenia international ultimately penned a new contract at RB Leipzig, deciding to remain in the Bundesliga until next summer at least, Arsenal were involved in a high-profile chase to sign Sesko.

The 6 foot 5 marksman racked up 18 goals in all competitions last season, drawing attention from a host of top European sides, and there were reports that Sesko informed agents of his desire to join Arsenal.

Sesko had a proposal on the table from Arteta's side, as well as both Chelsea and Man United, but the 21-year-old instead opted to remain with Leipzig. It's back to the drawing board for Edu and co in their search for a new striker, with Arteta keen to sign a young partner for Kai Havertz.

Arsenal have been tipped to bring in a prolific centre-forward for the better part of a year. The Gunners' output came from all over the pitch last season, with Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard dazzling as members of Arteta's interchangeable forward line.

However, despite this, they're reportedly keen to finally bring in a world-class marksman who can lead the line this summer. Interestingly, following Sesko's rejection, reports have re-emerged linking Arsenal with a move for Napoli star Victor Osimhen.

Victor Osimhen

The Nigerian signed a new £209,000-per-week contract midway through last season, which includes a £113 million release clause. So far, clubs have displayed a reluctance to pay the clause, but Osimhen is rumoured to favour a Premier League move.

Petit urges Arsenal to sign perfect Victor Osimhen

Speaking to talkSPORT this week, club legend Petit has urged Arsenal to seal a deal for Osimhen – claiming he would suit the north Londoners perfectly after watching the African since his Lille days.

"I would love to see a player like Osimhen, for example, as a striker," said Petit. “Someone who can hold defenders and think differently in terms of attacking the spaces behind the defenders and being a big threat on set pieces. A physical presence as well, but someone who can speak the same football.

“I’ve been watching him since he was at Lille before he left for Napoli and it would fit perfectly for Arsenal. I don’t know if Arsenal are going to buy him, but the first thing that they need is a striker.”

Ten Hag now urging Ratcliffe to sign "important" £146k-p/w star for Man Utd

Erik ten Hag is urging Sir Jim Ratcliffe to sign a bargain midfield reinforcement for Manchester United this summer, with talks now reportedly underway over a potential deal.

Man Utd transfer news

Although those at Old Trafford are yet to welcome a single fresh face as of yet, the headlines have certainly been dominated with potential arrivals, from Jarrad Branthwaite to Manuel Ugarte. The Red Devils have reportedly already seen one bid rejected by Everton for Branthwaite this summer, with the Toffees seemingly holding out for their £80m price tag in a potential blow for United.

Meanwhile, Ugarte represents the type of upgrade that Ten Hag needs to replace Casemiro, whose Old Trafford future has been in doubt in recent months. The Brazilian midfielder endured a campaign to forget last time out with many questioning whether he's still at the peak of his powers at the heart of Manchester United's midfield. As Ten Hag's side look to return to the Premier League's top four next season too, it's the type of questions they could do without.

He would be an excellent addition to the Red Devils’ side.

With that said, Ugarte isn't the only player being eyed in that regard. According to Rudy Galetti for TeamTalk, Ten Hag is now urging Sir Jim Ratcliffe to sign Adrien Rabiot this summer with Manchester United pushing hardest in the race to secure the Frenchman, who earns a reported £146k-a-week.

On his way out of Juventus as a free agent this summer as things stand, the Red Devils could land a bargain deal for Rabiot in pursuit of putting an end to last season's frustrating midfield problems. They were, of course, linked with Rabiot last summer, but ultimately failed to complete a move, before seemingly going again a year later.

Currently at Euro 2024 with France, Rabiot's future is certainly one to keep an eye on once the tournament comes to an end this summer.

"Important" Rabiot can replace Casemiro

What became clear at the end of last season was just how important Kobbie Mainoo will be for Ten Hag's in years to come. The young midfielder emerged to hand United a bright spark in a season to forget, even scoring in their FA Cup final victory against rivals Manchester City, but they need to find the suitable and experienced partner that they hoped Casemiro could be.

Adding a player with more attacking impetus and higher quality on the ball is exactly what's required to take some of the pressure off the youngster's shoulders when it comes to ball retention and progression, while still offering impressive defensive stability.

Looking at Rabiot's numbers, the praise of David Trezeguet comes as no surprise. The former Juventus forward told Football Italia via Juve FC: “We are talking about a problem for Juventus because in Italy he may have been targeted for criticism, but in France it’s completely different. He is world class, an extraordinary player. Now he will evaluate his options and will go back to being the important player he always was.”

Man Utd want to sign ‘scary’ England star to rival Marcus Rashford

There have been some legendary players to have played for both Manchester United and Newcastle United, two giants of English football, over the years. Perhaps the most famous of them all was striker Andy Cole, who lit up the Premier League for the Magpies before moving to Old Trafford and promptly winning the treble. He scored 121 goals in 275 appearances for the Red Devils.

Another treble-winner to have played for both clubs is Nicky Butt. The Class of ‘92 member played 385 times for United, winning eight Premier League titles along the way, before switching to St James’ Park in 2005 where he played 171 times for the club.

One of the more controversial players to have played for both clubs is Michael Owen. Given his history with Liverpool, it seemed outlandish for him to ever call Old Trafford home, but he switched the North East for the North West in 2009, where he proceeded to play 52 times in red, scoring 17 times.

Other notable names on the list had fleeting spells at one of the clubs, including another treble winner in Ronny Johnsen and French striker Louis Saha. However, with the transfer window open once more, there could be another player set to join United from the Magpies.

Man Utd target Newcastle winger

The player in question here is Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, who is currently at Euro 2024 with England. The 23-year-old was impressive during the 2023/24 season and has now been linked with a move away from St James’ Park this summer.

According to a report from news outlet CaughtOffside, Gordon is a player who is 'wanted' by United, and the Red Devils would 'do well to push' for the player during the summer transfer window.

However, Erik ten Hag’s side are not the only club that want to sign Gordon this summer. West Londoners Chelsea, who almost signed Gordon in 2022, are interested, but it is United’s big rivals Liverpool who are currently 'showing the strongest interest' in the 23-year-old. That said, Gordon is not the only player on Liverpool’s list, which could open the door for United and Chelsea.

It's suggested that the Toon star would cost between £70m and £75m, a fair amount given the player’s quality and the fact he has two years left on his deal. It would also see Newcastle make a healthy profit, given they spent £40m upfront on the winger.

Why Gordon would be a good signing

Gordon was one of Newcastle’s best players last season, scoring 11 goals and registering ten assists in 35 Premier League games.

His 21 combined goals and assists were the second-best amongst his teammates, bettered only by Alexander Isak who registered 23 goal involvements, as per Sofascore. Football analyst Umir called the winger “high level” on X, and it is easy to see why, given his goalscoring numbers.

Euro 2024 has been a frustrating time for Gordon. He has barely had the opportunity to play any football so far, registering just one minute of normal time, in the third group stage game against Slovenia which England drew 0-0.

In terms of his profile, Gordon is a rapid, direct winger who excels when running in behind, and in one-vs-one situations. It's hardly a surprise that writer Henry Winter suggested that he "scares defenders."

Those aforementioned qualities are very similar to United’s key man on the wing, Marcus Rashford, who had a tough season in 2023/24. The Englishman scored just eight goals and registered five assists from 43 games, which followed a season of 30 goals and ten assists in 56 games, a campaign which showed his quality.

Should United bring Gordon to the club, he could prove to be the perfect player to provide Rashford with competition on the left wing. Last season, United struggled for depth out there, given Alejandro Garnacho found a home on the right wing. With Rashford’s form patchy at times, having Gordon at his disposal could be a great option for Ten Hag.

The 23-year-old would certainly bring something similar to Rashford to the United squad. They are both exemplary ball-carriers, especially from wide areas, driving inside towards the penalty box and running at defenders, before looking to get a shot off or find a pass.

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford.

Last season, as per Fbref, Gordon averaged 2.27 carries into the final third per 90 minutes, compared to Rashford’s 2.02. However, the United number 10 averaged far more carries into the penalty box, with 2.54 compared to Gordon’s 1.84 per 90.

Last season, Gordon’s creative numbers were slightly higher than Rashford’s, who averaged 0.91 key passes per game, compared to the Newcastle winger’s 1.78 key passes. Gordon also averages more passes into the final third with 1.68 per 90, and passes into the penalty box with 1.21, compared to Rashford’s 1.35 final third passes and 1.19 penalty box passes.

Both wingers expected goals tally are pretty neck and neck, too. The 23-year-old Newcastle winger averages 0.32xG per 90, with the United academy graduate slightly less, averaging 0.29xG per 90 minutes.

Newcastle player Anthony Gordon

Should the Red Devils bring Gordon to the club, he could be an excellent alternative to Rashford. It gives their number 10 excellent competition, with the Magpies star being one of the best wingers in the Premier League last season. It also means you have a top-quality replacement should Rashford need time out of the side or picks up an injury.

If Ten Hag sees Garnacho’s long-term future on the right wing, then signing Gordon certainly makes sense. Despite the fact he will cost a fair amount of money, upwards of £75m, it would be a smart investment for United to make.

Chelsea eyeing move for £64 million Real Madrid target alongside Calafiori

Chelsea are attempting to back new head coach Enzo Maresca with top quality new players for his backline, and as they get involved in a high-profile race to sign Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori, they have their eyes on other defensive additions as well.

As backed by reliable transfer sources like Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are solid contenders to bring Calafiori to the Premier League.

The 22-year-old defender, who helped Bologna qualify for the Champions League after an impressive season, stood out as a key figure at the heart of their back line over his 30 Serie A appearances.

Calafiori's talents were then highlighted on the biggest stage at Euro 2024, with the Italian standing out as one of Luciano Spaletti's best performers until the Azzurri crashed out of the competition to Switzerland in the Last 16.

This has motivated intense interest from Chelsea in the former FC Basel star, but they'll have to contend with London rivals Arsenal, who are thought to be ahead of Maresca's side as things stand.

"The big story of the last few days is with Riccardo Calafiori and if you’ve been following on here then you’ll know since last week about the strong interest from Arsenal and Chelsea," wrote Romano on Arsenal and Chelsea's pursuit of Calafiori (via Dailybriefing).

"Both clubs are really interested in Calafiori, and now Arsenal have presented their proposal to the Italy international – it’s a long-term contract, the salary is not an issue at all, and they also presented their project to the player, and he is open to joining Arsenal in case they can reach an agreement with Bologna.

"So, there is already a green light from Calafiori to Arsenal, but what about Chelsea? My understanding is that Chelsea are prepared to approach Bologna, and that they will try to include players in the negotiation. It’s a different strategy, but Chelsea are still there, even if Arsenal are the favourites at the moment."

Riccardo Calafiori.

It will be interesting to see if Chelsea can replicate their Mykhailo Mudryk deal by hijacking Arsenal at the last, but in the meantime, they're also targeting other defensive additions. Maresca is a real admirer of Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez, but the west Londoners have still been linked with a new shot-stopper.

Chelsea eyeing Diogo Costa alongside Calafiori

The European Championships have allowed another talent to stand out in Portugal keeper Diogo Costa, who saved every single Slovenia penalty in their last 16 shootout and made himself a hero for his country.

The FC Porto ace has been ever-present at club level as well, leading to some of the continent's biggest sides taking an interest. Chelsea keeping a very close eye on Costa as they target another goalkeeper, with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid doing the same.

That is according to Jornal de Notícias, via Sport Witness, who also claim the 24-year-old will cost £64 million this summer, the full value of his release clause, following a brilliant Euro 2024 campaign.

West Ham now interested in signing £25m forward who once tormented Ogbonna

In search of another attacking boost after already welcoming 18-year-old Luis Guilherme, West Ham United are now reportedly interested in signing a player whose quality they've already experienced first-hand.

West Ham transfer news

The Hammers didn't waste any time before getting their summer window started, welcoming Guilherme for a reported £26m. The Brazilian becomes Julen Lopetegui's first signing in what the boss will hope is a sign of things to come in the next few months. Reports certainly suggest that West Ham aren't done there, either, having also been linked with the likes of Youssef En-Nesyri and Chelsea's Raheem Sterling.

West Ham in contact to sign Serie A defender for Lopetegui

He’s been called a “complete” player as Lopetegui looks to strengthen his squad.

ByCharlie Smith Jun 11, 2024

Sterling would be a particularly interesting one. Whilst he didn't have his best season last time out in a struggling Chelsea side, his experience could quickly prove to be invaluable at the London Stadium and his ability at his best, if he reached that level again, would make him an instant standout for the Hammers. That said, it remains to be seen if Chelsea would sell to a London rival this summer.

Instead, West Ham have reportedly turned their attention towards a former Stamford Bridge star. According to Roma Corriere, West Ham are now interested in signing Tammy Abraham, who is valued at €30m (£25m) by AS Roma this summer. The former Chelsea striker has seen his time in Italy derailed by injuries and could now return to England with West Ham, Tottenham, Everton and Aston Villa all interested in his signature.

The Hammers should be well aware of his quality already too, having seen Abraham score twice in Chelsea's 3-0 victory over them in the 2020/21 season. Tormenting Angelo Ogbonna and Fabián Balbuena on that day, Abraham would certainly have some making up to do at the London Stadium.

With plenty of clubs interested, however, West Ham will have to waste no time if they want to welcome a crucial attacking boost this summer.

"Great" Abraham needs Premier League return

After fighting back from an ACL injury last season, Abraham finds himself at a crossroads at Roma and one that should lead back to the Premier League. There's no doubt that he has the quality for England's top tier, as he proved when handed an opportunity at Chelsea. Now, it is West Ham who should offer him a similar chance.

Earning the praise of Frank Lampard during his time at Chelsea, the former manager told the club's official website: "I’m delighted with Tammy. He has a really great attitude in training, a desire to score goals and his all-round game was really good as well. Myself and the staff are working closely with him on little bits of his game where I think he can be even better and he’s been very receptive to that."

With the summer transfer window still in its early stages, all signs are pointing towards a busy few months for those at the London Stadium.
