Hardik Pandya and Prithvi Shaw are part of strong India A squads for the shadow tour of New Zealand in January 2020.While Hardik is part of just the one-day leg of the tour, Shaw has been named in both the 50-overs and four-day squads, and will be in the race to be India’s back-up Test opener with former India Under-19 team-mate Shubman Gill. While Mayank Agarwal and Rohit Sharma opened in all five Tests of India’s home season, against South Africa and Bangladesh, Gill was part of the reserves as the third opener.ALSO READ: Bumrah, Dhawan return for home series against Sri Lanka and AustraliaGill will captain India A’s one-day squad, while middle-order batsman Hanuma Vihari will lead a strong four-day contingent. On Monday, chief selector MSK Prasad confirmed to journalists after the selection meeting that “Hardik would be looked at in the third week of January”, which is around the time the one-day leg of India A’s tour is scheduled. The three-match ODI series against New Zealand is slated to begin on February 5.Meanwhile, Shaw returned to competitive cricket in November after the completion of a backdated eight-month suspension for a doping violation. He struck form immediately, scoring 240 runs in five innings, including three half-centuries, for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He followed that up with scores of 66 and 202, his maiden first-class double century, in Mumbai’s 309-run win over Baroda in their Ranji Trophy opener earlier this month.KL Rahul is a notable absentee from the four-day India A squad, with the selectors seemingly happy to look at the next generation of talent. Rahul lost his Test berth to Rohit after the tour of West Indies in July-August, but has been in prolific white-ball form for Karnataka and India since. Two other prolific domestic openers, Priyank Panchal and Abhimanyu Easwaran, will be part of the squad for the first four-dayer, which will also feature the promising fast bowlers Sandeep Warrier, Ishan Porel, Khaleel Ahmed, Mohammed Siraj and Avesh Khan.India A squad for two tour matches and three one-day games: Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill (capt), Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Axar Patel, Rahul Chahar, Sandeep Warrier, Ishan Porel, Khaleel Ahmed, Mohammed SirajIndia A squad for 1st four-day game: Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, Priyank Panchal, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Shubman Gill, Hanuma Vihari (capt), KS Bharat (wk), Shivam Dube, Shahbaz Nadeem, Rahul Chahar, Sandeep Warrier, Avesh Khan, Mohammed Siraj, Ishan Porel, Ishan KishanIndia A squad for 2nd four-day game: Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Hanuma Vihari (capt), KS Bharat (wk), Shivam Dube, R Ashwin, Shahbaz Nadeem, Sandeep Warrier, Avesh Khan, Mohammed Siraj, Ishan Porel

Jake Weatherald, Rashid Khan hold off Perth Scorchers in rain-hit runfest

Jake Weatherald’s match-winning 83 and a momentum-changing spell from Rashid Khan has helped the Adelaide Strikers hold off the Perth Scorchers in a high-scoring classic at Adelaide Oval.In a rain-affected game that was reduced to 18 overs a side, the Scorchers looked on track to chase down the Strikers’ monstrous target of 199 after a stunning 124-run stand between Liam Livingstone and Josh Inglis in just 8.4 overs. But Rashid, after being hammered for three sixes by Livingstone in his first nine balls, removed both openers off consecutive deliveries before befuddling Ashton Turner to swing the momentum back the Strikers’ way. The Scorchers failed to wrestle in back, falling 15 runs short.Earlier, Weatherald and Alex Carey made sublime half-centuries to set up the winning total. Weatherald smashed 83 from 47 balls before Carey outdid him with a sensational 55 from 24 balls.Weatherald’s trip to Paris
The Strikers started slowly after the early loss of Phil Salt. The Englishman’s BBL journey started poorly after he miscued trying to loft Jhye Richardson over mid-off in the first over, adding just 2 to his duck against Sydney Thunder. The Strikers were 1 for 16 after three overs before Weatherald lined up Joel Paris’ second over, having faced three dots from him in his first. His first boundary was streaky, a French cut past leg stump. But he launched the next ball over the midwicket fence. Paris then dropped a tough caught-and-bowled chance before Weatherald pounded the next two to the rope to take 20 from the over. Matthew Short followed up, striking three fours in Mitchell Marsh’s first over to push the run rate above 10 an over.Raining boundaries
An untimely rain delay at the end of the fifth over appeared to give the Scorchers a reprieve by both halting the Strikers’ momentum and giving them a big advantage chasing as the game was reduced to an 18-overs-a-side contest. But it had the opposite effect. The rain greased up the surface and the outfield. It nullified the Scorchers’ spin threats in Ashton Agar and Fawad Ahmed and the Strikers took full toll. Alex Carey played a sublime knock after the loss of Short. He started with two incredible inside-out sixes off Agar against the angle over cover. Agar, Australia’s T20 spinning allrounder, only bowled one over in the innings after conceding 16.Carey’s timing was freakish and he was impossible to bowl to. In the 17th over, he paddled Chris Jordan to fine leg before hitting the same line and length over cover. Weatherald ran himself out, bizarrely failing to beat Richardson firing the ball in from the rope due to his injured shoulder. The Strikers were set to score 200 in 18 overs but fell just short, mainly due to a stunning jumping catch from Agar by the rope to remove Carey. Richardson was the only Scorchers bowler to get through unscathed, taking 2 for 29 from his four overs, including two excellent ones at the death.Living large
Livingstone and Inglis started the run chase with a required run rate of 10.78. By the end of the eighth over, the Scorchers were 0 for 111 needing a very manageable 88 from 60 balls with 10 wickets in hand. Inglis set the tone with a pull shot that went like a bullet to the midwicket rope off the first ball of the innings. Inglis matched Carey’s 360-degree play with boundaries all around the park. Livingstone just stood still and swung hard, clubbing seven massive sixes over the leg side. Livingstone matched the fastest fifty in Scorchers’ history taking just 21 balls to raise his bat. He brought it up with a 98-metre six that landed in the first tier of the Members’ stand. No bowler was safe from the staggering assault. He hit the first three balls he faced from Rashid Khan for sixes over the leg side.Rashid’s revenge
The star legspinner was having a dirty night having earlier dropped Livingstone at long-on. He rarely gets hit for four consecutive sixes by one batsman. Chris Gayle once did it in the IPL; Livingstone tried and perished, holing out to deep midwicket. Inglis was bowled sweeping next ball to change the game in a heartbeat. Rashid bamboozled Turner in his next over to have him caught behind. Rashid’s figures went from 0 for 28 after 1.3 overs to 3 for 40 after four and the Scorchers needed 50 runs from 30 balls. They saw off Rashid’s final over and tried to target the Strikers’ inexperienced quicks, but failed. Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Bancroft, and Cameron Green all holed out while Agar fell to his younger brother, Wes, for the second time this season, strangled down the leg side.

Jadon Sancho to PSG? Man Utd winger seen as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Nico Williams alternative as French side search for Kylian Mbappe replacement

Paris Saint-Germain are keeping tabs on Jadon Sancho as part of their efforts to bring in a wide forward as a replacement for Kylian Mbappe.

According to , PSG have eyes on Sancho at the same time as retaining interest in Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Nico Williams – the latter is wanted by Barcelona but may now be having doubts about joining the club this year. With Mbappe taking 44 goals from last season with him to Real Madrid, PSG want someone who is "both efficient and charismatic".

It comes as Sancho's future at Manchester United appeared to be coming clearer after seemingly burying the hatchet with Erik ten Hag following last season's falling out. The 24-year-old has featured in friendlies against Rangers and Arsenal so far this summer, although United could still cash in for the right offer.

DID YOU KNOW?

Sancho's contract Old Trafford runs until the summer of 2026, with the option of a further year. It has previously been reported that an offer of £40 million ($51m) could convince them to sell.

Unless something drastic happens, like a sizeable offer from PSG, Sancho will likely remain a United player and has the potential to be like a new signing for Ten Hag. His pre-season will continue on July 31 with a friendly against Real Betis in San Diego.

Reporter drops significant transfer plans he’s now heard from Celtic

Journalist Pete O'Rourke has dropped a significant transfer update after hearing news from Celtic, with Brendan Rodgers making his presence felt.

Celtic transfer news

The Hoops drew 3-3 away to Rangers in a Scottish Premiership epic on Sunday, with Rodgers' men throwing away a lead in the stoppage time that could be so key come the end of the campaign. The result itself was no disaster, but it does still mean that their rivals have a narrow advantage in the title race.

Regardless of who ends up going all the way this season, Celtic supporters will be expecting another positive time of things in the transfer market, allowing the manager to bolster his squad, adding both depth and quality to it.

Fotis Ioannidis has been linked with a summer switch to Parkhead, with the Greek impressing for Panathanaikos in 2023/24 to date, scoring five goals in as many Europa League starts. He is seen as an alternative to Adam Idah, should the Hoops loanee not seal a permanent move to the club from Norwich City.

Adam Idah

Joe Hart is hanging up his boots once the campaign reaches its conclusion, and Celtic have been backed to sign Trabzonspor captain Ugurcan Cakir as a replacement. Former Leicester City head of recruitment Lee Congerton once called him "one of the best goalkeepers I have seen in my life", showing what an exciting addition the 28-year-old could be at Parkhead.

Eduard Spertsyan, a 23-year-old attacking midfielder currently plying his trade at Krasnodar, is another reported Hoops target, not only being lined up as someone who could replace Matt O'Riley if he leaves, but even being compared to Manchester City icon Kevin De Bruyne.

Celtic focusing on key signing

According to a fresh claim from Football Insider, Celtic will focus on signing a new goalkeeper in the summer window ahead of Hart's retirement at the end of the season, and could even brutally let all three current shot-stoppers leave and/or be replaced.

Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart.

The report states that there are "no plans to upgrade with fellow Celtic Park shot-stoppers Scott Bain and Benjamin Siegrist", with the Hoops instead "ready to listen to offers" for Siegrist in particular.

Hart has been a tremendous servant for Celtic, making 145 appearances and keeping 60 clean sheets in that time, and his ability and experience mean he could leave a big void between the sticks.

The importance of having a top-quality 'keeper is essential for any team with title aspirations, so it is encouraging to see that Celtic see the importance of nailing their current No.1's successor.

Cakir stands out as a brilliant option, given the aforementioned praise he has received, not to mention the fact that he is a 27-time capped Turkey international.

Unlike Hart, he is still relatively young for a 'keeper, so would be a long-term signing, and him being captain of his current side suggests that he possesses strong leadership skills.

O’Leary’s Leeds flop would be worth more than Rutter in 2024 money

Leeds United are no strangers to a transfer flop and their recent squad that was relegated from the Premier League last season was littered with them.

The likes of Brenden Aaronson, Rasus Kristensen, Weston McKennie, and Marc Roca came through the door during the 2022/23 campaign but failed to do enough to keep the team in the top-flight.

Former Whites sporting director Victor Orta did not make enough successful additions to bolster Jesse Marsch's squad to help the American coach avoid the sack, despite breaking the club's transfer record during the January window.

Former Leeds boss Jesse Marsch.

Leeds smashed their record to land Hoffenheim youngster Georginio Rutter for a staggering fee of £35.5m in an attempt to fire the side to safety during the second half of the season.

However, there have been signings made by the Whites in the past that have been more expensive relative to the time they were made, when you adjust for the inflation of transfer fees in football over the years, including Robbie Keane – who the club had a howler with.

The Ireland international, unfortunately, did not turn out to be as successful as Rutter has turned out to be, even after an underwhelming start from the Frenchman.

Georginio Rutter's Leeds career so far

After arriving for a club-record £35.5m, the Bundesliga starlet failed to hit the ground running in the Premier League and played under three managers in five months; Marsch, Javi Gracia, and Sam Allardyce.

The young gem failed to score a single goal and registered one assist in 11 top-flight appearances for the Whites, which included one start, as Leeds were relegated down to the Championship.

Orta and the club may have expected a bigger impact from their record signing to help the team to avoid the drop from the Premier League, but the relegation has provided Rutter with an opportunity to shine in the second tier.

The 21-year-old magician has plundered six goals and created 15 for his teammates in 37 league appearances for the Yorkshire-based outfit during the 2023/24 campaign.

Rutter has only scored six goals from an xG (Expected Goals) of 11.37 in the Championship, and this suggests that the forward needs to work on his finishing as he has not made the most of the opportunities his fellow attackers have created for him.

As you can see in the table below, the talented whiz, however, has not had many issues when it comes to creating chances for his teammates in the final third.

He has been the outstanding creative threat for Daniel Farke at the top end of the pitch with his ability to split open opposition defences to create high-quality opportunities on a regular basis.

Rutter has five assists in his last six Championship appearances for Leeds at the time of writing (22/03/2024), which shows that the former Hoffenheim wizard has been on fire in recent weeks as the Whites challenge to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.

His impressive performances in attack this season suggest that he is well on his way to being a success at Elland Road, which was, unfortunately, not the case for Keane in Yorkshire.

How much Leeds paid to sign Robbie Keane in 2024 money

Former Leeds manager David O'Leary swooped to sign the Irish centre-forward on loan from Italian giants Inter in January 2001 before making the move permanent in the summer of that year.

Per Totally Money, the club paid £16.2m in total to land the attacker and, per their index, that would be worth a staggering £36.58m in today's (2024) money. This means that Keane was worth more than Rutter at the time of their respective arrivals relative to the time that they were signed.

Robbie Keane

The attacker had only scored three goals in 15 matches for Inter after his move from Coventry City, where he had plundered 12 goals in 31 Premier League games.

Keane hit the ground running at Elland Road during his loan spell from the Italian giants, with a return of eight goals and one assist in 18 top-flight outings, and zero in two FA Cup clashes, in the second half of the 2000/01 campaign.

His impressive goalscoring record during his time on loan made the big-money permanent deal look sensible at the time. Unfortunately, it did not turn out to be a good use of funds by O'Leary and the club, as they had a howler with the Elland Road flop.

Robbie Keane's struggles at Leeds

The Ireland international scored nine goals in 33 appearances in all competitions for the Whites throughout the 2001/02 campaign, as he only scored one more goal in 13 more outings than he did for Leeds during the second half of the previous season.

Three of his nine goals also came in a 6-0 thumping of Leicester City in the League Cup, and another three of his strikes came in six UEFA Cup games.

This meant that only three of his goals came in the Premier League as the forward managed three goals and one assist in 25 top-flight appearances for O'Leary.

Robbie Keane

A return of just three league goals for Keane in the 2001/02 season shows that he was a flop in front of goal after being signed for a whopping £36.58m in 2024 money, as he scored less than half as many Premier League goals that term as he did in his five-month loan spell in Yorkshire.

Terry Venables then arrived as the new Leeds manager in the summer of 2002 and left the striker on the bench for the first two games of the season, which – along with some convincing from Glen Hoddle – led to a £7m transfer to Tottenham Hotspur that year.

Keane, therefore, spent just one season and only scored three Premier League goals in his time at the club on a permanent basis, which shows that the club had a big howler with his signing – given the relative money spent on him in 2001.

Leeds struck gold on record signing who'd be worth £159m in 2024 money

The star sold by the Whites would be worth a mammoth fee in the current day financial landscape.

ByDan Emery Mar 20, 2024

The centre-forward went on to score over 100 goals for both Spurs and MLS giants LA Galaxy respectively later in his career, which shows that the Leeds flop did go on to achieve success in front of goal in his career after his struggles in Yorkshire.

Raheem Sterling isn’t the only star Pochettino must axe from his Chelsea XI

Chelsea have been one of the most entertaining teams to watch in the country this season, although that mainly stems from the unpredictability of their results and performances.

Mauricio Pochettino's side provided the entertainment once again on Sunday afternoon, squeaking past a stubborn Leicester City side in a thrilling FA Cup quarter-final that ended 4-2 in their favour.

However, while the Blues were generally the better side throughout and deserved the win, there were a couple of starters who might have played themselves out of the lineup for the next game, with one of them being Raheem Sterling.

The former Liverpool prospect has been struggling of late in West London, and yesterday's encounter was no different, although he certainly wasn't the only one.

Raheem Sterling's performance vs Leicester City

It was another tough day at the office for the Englishman on Sunday afternoon as, despite providing the assist for Cole Palmer's goal in the first half, he left the pitch to a chorus of boos from his own supporters.

The former Manchester City ace struggled throughout the match, missing a penalty that would have seen the team go two goals up within the first 30 minutes, taking maybe the worst free-kick of the season, and generally looking ineffective in attack.

It may sound harsh, but it's an opinion shared by the Standard's Nizaar Kinsella, who awarded the 29-year-old a 4/10 match rating on the day and heavily criticised him for both the penalty miss and abysmal free kick.

While those are the moments that'll stick out to most fans, the Kingston-born ace's underlying numbers from the game were also poor. In his 86 minutes of action, he completed just 13 passes, missed two big chances, was successful in just one of his four attempted dribbles, won just four of his ten duels, lost possession 14 times and misplaced his one long ball.

In all, it was a shocking performance from a player who should be stepping up and showing his younger teammates how it's done, and with how well Noni Madueke played when he replaced him – scoring from the bench – it's time Pochettino took Sterling out of the starting lineup.

That said, there was another starter for Chelsea who should be dropped for the next game, a player who very nearly cost the Blues the tie.

Axel Disasi's performance vs Leicester City

Yes, the other starter who should be taken out of the side for the clash against Burnley in just under a fortnight is French centre-back Axel Disasi.

The former AS Monaco man had an odd game, as his first-half display was rather indifferent, but his 30-yard own goal in the 51st minute turned the game on its head and allowed the Foxes back in, an opportunity they happily took, scoring the equaliser just 11 minutes later.

Unsurprisingly, this lapse in concentration – to put it kindly – is what stood out from the 26-year-old's game, with the Standard's Kinsella awarding him a 4/10 on the day and claiming that 'his game will be remembered for a moment of madness.'

However, much like Sterling, the 6 foot 3 star's overall game was also shoddy. In his 98 minutes on the pitch, he won just two of his six duels, was dribbled past twice, lost possession 11 times, was accurate in just five of his 12 attempted longballs, and committed one foul.

In all, even without the spectacular own goal, it was a performance to forget from Disasi, and with Thiago Silva fit enough for the bench, it might be time for Pochettino to drop him from the starting lineup against Burnley, alongside Sterling.
