Mumbai have beaten Super Kings twice in IPL 2019 and in all they have defeated the hosts four times in six IPL matches at Chepauk

Vettori: 160 could be a winning score at Chepauk
Big pictureThe two best teams in the IPL 2019 league phase have finished on the top of the table, despite a season of fluctuating fortunes where who would finish top, or bottom, wasn’t decided till the last day.Against any team other than Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings would have been the firm favourites for the first qualifier given that the match will take place in Chepauk. But Mumbai are the team who have dominated Super Kings at their home ground, which makes this contest a lot more even. Mumbai won both league games against Super Kings this year, including a 46-run win at Chepauk, and the overall head to head at the venue in the IPL stands 4-2 in favour of Mumbai.Super Kings’ army of spinners have held sway over other batting line-ups, but Mumbai’s batting depth, power and class have been enough to negate that threat, more often than not. Mumbai’s spin stocks are comparatively weaker, but their pacers, led by the redoubtable Jasprit Bumrah, more than make up for it.Super Kings’ weakest suit this season has been their batting, which has been camouflaged to a large extent thanks to MS Dhoni’s form and nous. Mumbai’s own batting hasn’t consistently fired as a unit, but Hardik Pandya has been unstoppable in the middle, and one or the other of the top order has generally got runs. Rohit Sharma has begun to find his groove in the second half of the season too, and he’s the kind of batsman that can transcend the pitch and conditions, and get runs even if Super Kings offer up a turner. In the news Kedar Jadhav’s shoulder injury has put Super Kings in a quandary. Jadhav didn’t have the best time with the bat in the league phase, but they’ll be forced to rejig their combination ahead of the playoffs – and Super Kings are famously averse to changing their XIs, even to the extent of carrying under-performing players.Form guide
Mumbai Indians: Beat Kolkata Knight Riders by nine wickets, beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Super Over, lost to Kolkata Knight riders by 34 runs. Chennai Super Kings: Lost to Kings XI Punjab by six wickets, beat Delhi Capitals by 80 runs, lost to Mumbai Indians by 46 runs.
Previous meetingMumbai outclassed Super Kings in Chepauk with Rohit Sharma’s classy innings followed by a strangulation in the middle overs. Rohit made 67, his first half-century of IPL 2019, in that game, taking Mumbai to 155 for 4. It was more than a competitive score on a pitch aiding spinners, and Super Kings capsized to 109 all out in 17.4 overs.Hardik Pandya hits one straight•BCCILikely XIs Mumbai Indians: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Rohit Sharma (capt), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Ishan Kishan, 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 Anukul Roy, 9 Rahul Chahar, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Jasprit BumrahChennai Super Kings: 1 Shane Watson, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Dhruv Shorey, 7 Dwayne Bravo, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Deepak Chahar, 10 Harbhajan Singh, 11 Imran TahirStrategy punt Mumbai need to consider pushing Hardik Pandya higher up the order. Hardik’s been in the form of his life this IPL, and he has shown that he is not just a hitter who can hit a few balls at the death. His strike rate against spin this season is a staggering 205, the highest in the competition. His strike rate in the middle overs (7 to 15) is 181, again the highest in the competition. And it’s not like he’s been a ‘hit out or get out’ batsman either – he hardly gets out in the middle overs in fact. Of the 58 balls Hardik has faced in the middle overs this IPL, he has been dismissed just once, and hit 105 runs. His form and numbers make a compelling case to send him in fairly early, because Hardik has shown staying power as well as destructive ability – T20 gold. One option Super Kings could look at is finding a place for Mitchell Santner in the XI. To do so however, would mean axing Shane Watson. Since the franchise has kept faith with Watson throughout an underwhelming league stage, it’s difficult to see them dropping him for the playoff, but Santner has a compelling case. When these two teams last met, he took 2 for 13 in four high-quality overs. Santner has played only four games this season, largely due to team combinations, but he’s conceded runs overall at just 6.7 per over, at an average of 23.5. He also adds a handy lower-order batting option. Super Kings have been cautious starters this season, but that has actually been better for them than when they have tried to attack more up front. This is shown up more in the difference when they set a target versus chase one. With no scoreboard pressure while batting first, they have scored at 6.4 runs per over in the Powerplay on average, while losing only one wicket. While chasing, they have gone harder and lost 2.3 wickets on average, but the loss of wickets has meant their average Powerplay run rate while chasing is only 6.2. The trend holds for the first ten overs too, with a run rate of 6.7 while batting first, compared to 6.4 while chasing. Counter-intuitively then, perhaps Super Kings would be better off batting first and following their tried and tested method, even though most teams prefer chasing in T20s. How much dew is expected could alter that though.Stats that matter Karn Sharma has been in the IPL winning team for the past three seasons now, but he’s more than just a lucky charm. In five playoff matches, Karn has taken seven wickets at an average of 14.6 and an economy rate of 6.6. While Mumbai hold a 15-11 edge in their head-to-head rivalry against Super Kings, that trend doesn’t hold in playoff matches. Super Kings have won four to Mumbai’s three in the seven times these two sides have met in a playoff. Curiously enough, only one of those seven games have been won by the team chasing. This will be Ravindra Jadeja’s 100th match for Chennai Super Kings, and the team itself needs one victory to get to 100 wins.
Ange Postecoglou's revolution down the N17 took something of a hit as his Tottenham Hotspur team's fragility in depth was illuminated by that fateful evening against Chelsea, led by former boss Mauricio Pochettino, in November.
An unbeaten start to the 2023/24 Premier League campaign was shattered, and influential summer signings James Maddison and Micky van de Ven picked up injuries that plague them to date.
Had Spurs received somewhat more fortuitous fortunes on the injury front over the past several weeks, it's quite possible to imagine that Postecoglou would remain in the conversation for the Premier League title as the festive period nears its closing stage.
Spurs "stepping up" pursuit of "dominant" £26m Van de Ven partner
Ange Postecoglou’s priority is to sign a centre-back this January.

Indeed, Tottenham remain just six points away from table-topping neighbours Arsenal and just a single point away from fourth-placed champions Manchester City, but it's unrealistic to think that a challenge for silver-laden success is something feasible without astute work in the January transfer window.
Tottenham transfer news – Morato
According to a recent report from The Sun, Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy is considering launching an official approach for Brazilian prodigy Morato, who has caught the eye with his performances for SL Benfica.
Morato, aged 22, has a £68m release clause embedded in his contract but it is understood that Benfica recognise that such demands will not be met by interested parties and thus have valued him at around €30m (£26m).
Spurs are compiling a list of various defensive targets ahead of the opening of the winter market and could be enticed by Morato's left-footedness, with Van de Ven's void highlighting the lack of options in that area of the pitch.
Morato's style of play
Talent scout Jacek Kulig has dubbed Morato a "complete & dominant" type of defender, with his imposing stature and towering frame making for the perfect titan to decimate attacking efforts from hapless opposition.
Having chalked up 66 appearances for his Portuguese outfit since signing from Brazilian team Sao Paulo for around £5m in 2019, Morato has done enough with his displays to warrant attention from clubs such as Tottenham, with Nottingham Forest also failing with an offer in the summer.

Not quite earning a prominent role in the team throughout the opening months of the campaign, Morato has recently established himself as a starring member of Roger Schmidt's side and has started the past five matches in Liga Portugal.
As per Sofascore, the 6 foot 3 colossus has completed 81% of his passes across his eight league outings this term and has averaged a key pass every other game, also impressively making 3.0 tackles, 6.0 ball recoveries and 2.1 clearances per game and succeeding in 61% of his contested duels.
While Morato is principally a central defender, he has also been fielded at left-back for the Eagles in a kind of positional fluidity that aligns with Postecoglou's interchanging style.
Benfica defender Morato.
To showcase his dynamism, Morato ranks among the top 3% of centre-halfs across divisions similar to the Liga Portugal for assists, the top 16% for progressive passes, the top 7% for progressive carries, the top 11% for successful take-ons and the top 1% for tackles per 90, as per FBref.
Hailed as a “beast” at the back by journalist and U23 scout Antonio Mango, Morato certainly offers the kind of modern skill set that would be a good fit for an ambitious Premier League team such as Tottenham, with an excellent ball-playing ability and an aggressiveness that mirrors that of Cristian Romero.
How Morato compares to Cristian Romero
Signing from Serie A side Atalanta for a fee in the region of £42m back in 2021, Romero has amassed 78 displays for Tottenham and has proved himself top be one of the toughest-tackling defenders in the country, even proclaimed to be a "Rolls-Royce" of a player by pundit Martin Keown.
Romero ranks among the top 13% of positional peers for goals scored, the top 19% for shot-creating actions, the top 16% for passes attempted and pass completion, the top 18% for blocks and the top 6% for tackles per 90.
This season, having scored three goals from just 14 matches in the Premier League, the £165k-per-week ace has completed 92% of his passes, averaging 2.2 tackles, 6.1 recoveries and 3.6 clearances per game while remarkably winning 71% of his duels.
Such metrics underscore Romero's brilliance at the back but also highlight how Morato could serve as the perfect understudy, boasting similar levels of tackling and assuredness in challenges.
Commenting on Tottenham's improved defensive efforts this season, Postecoglou was quick to credit the Argentine World Cup winner with a central role, saying (as relayed by The Athletic's Charlie Eccleshare): "A big part of that is Romero. He makes them (the rest of the back 5 who had never or barely played in the PL) feel like they belong and that they can flourish. He's an outstanding defender, someone you want in your team. Ridiculous bravery."
With Romero noted for his immense tackling faculty (though, admittedly, struggling with the disciplinary side of things at times), Spurs wield one of the most fearsome units to protect their goal in Europe, and it's definitely not a bold claim to suggest that the lion's share of top European teams would only be too eager to snap up his services.
Morato is making more tackles than Romero on average per game; bringing a player of such strength to English shores would be a sure-fire way for Postecoglou to improve his club's chance of rising to the forefront of the European game over the coming years.
With the likes of Eric Dier, Ben Davies and Emerson Royal all serving as stand-ins in the Spurs rearguard this season, Morato would be the dream addition to bolster the ranks and continue to shape the squad to Postecoglou's creation.
With West Ham United vying for a European place yet again in the Premier League this season, David Moyes could turn to the January transfer window to cement his side's place in the top six and potentially beyond. The Hammers currently sit as high as sixth and just seven points adrift of the top four in what could be a dream campaign in England's top flight.
Those at the London Stadium will be well aware that there's still a long way to go, but the winter window could suddenly put an even greater positive spin on their season so far if they land their targets. Among those that they're reportedly eyeing is a rival player who knows all about qualifying for European football.
West Ham transfer news
When West Ham lost Declan Rice to Arsenal in the summer, it was easy to worry about just how they'd replace the midfielder and splash the cash gained from his departure. Months later, however, and those fears have been firmly put to bed. The Hammers signed Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse to boost their midfield, before turning their attention to Mohammed Kudus, who has starred further forward. Now, they could repeat their transfer genius by landing a defensive target on the cheap.
West Ham want breakthrough Serie A star with "extraordinary qualities"
A breakthrough star appears to be catching the eye of West Ham United.
ByLuke Randall Jan 1, 2024
According to Football Transfers, West Ham have made contact to sign Eric Dier, who will be allowed to leave Tottenham Hotspur this month. The defender's current contract runs out in the summer, meaning that the Lilywhites are on course to lose him for free if they do not cash in this month. Given that Moyes is reportedly impressed by Dier and sees him as a player similar to summer target Harry Maguire, a deal could certainly be on the cards for West Ham in the transfer window this month.
"Reliable" Dier desperately needs move
Dier's game time shows just how much he needs a Spurs departure. The England international has started just one Premier League game for the Lilywhites this season, even amid injuries to both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.
A January switch to West Ham would be coming at the perfect time for both parties. Dier would be staying at the top level in England's top flight, with West Ham competing for a place in the top six, and the Hammers would be getting a player with the experience that could make all the difference in the remainder of the campaign.
jonathan-tah-eric-dier-tottenham-opinion
It's been some fall from grace for Dier since Ange Postecoglou arrived since he was once at the centre of praise from former boss Antonio Conte. Conte said via The Daily Mail: "What I can tell you is that Eric has improved a lot since I arrived. We are talking about a reliable player, 100 per cent focused in every game. He is not a player who alternates with a big performance then a drop. He is providing great continuity in his role and playing every game. I can also tell you he is a really good guy, with great will, desire to work and improve."
Even despite his struggles under the Aussie manager, there is no question his experience and know-how could add crucial depth and leadership to a Hammers side riding the crest of a wave.

Last summer, Chelsea paid £30m to activate the release clause in Nicolas Jackson's Villarreal contract, and committed him to an eight-year deal. While the 22-year-old still has plenty of time to improve, it's undeniably been a slow start at Stamford Bridge.
He's scored eight goals in 23 appearances in all competitions so far, and it's worth noting that three of those came late on against nine-man Spurs in a 4-1 victory in early November. The Senegalese frontman, who's currently representing his country at AFCON, has been wasteful in front of goal, ranking joint-fourth in the Premier League for big chances missed (12). Only Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin (-4.6) has undershot his xG by a bigger margin than Jackson's 3.6.
This is a big part of the reason why Chelsea are only eighth in the league for goals scored (35), despite creating the second-highest xG (41.6), and ninth in the table overall. Mauricio Pochettino will hope that a potential deal for Karim Benzema could fix the issue.
Chelsea talks over Benzema
According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea have held discussions over a move for Benzema, who's currently playing his football at Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia after leaving Real Madrid last year. The Blues have been monitoring his situation in the Gulf with a view to possibly making a move.
London rivals Arsenal are also "considering a blockbuster loan deal", provided that Al-Ittihad are willing to sanction one. It remains to be seen whether the Gunners present a formal offer and whether Chelsea decide to submit a rival proposal.
Ballon d'Or winner could give Chelsea clinical touch
Journalist Zach Lowy has dubbed Benzema a "legend", and it's impossible to argue with that description. Benzema left European football with a collection of medals that would be the envy of virtually any footballer worldwide, headlined by five Champions Leagues and eight domestic titles (four in Spain with Real and four in France with Lyon).
At the individual level, meanwhile, Benzema is one of only two players not named Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Ballon d'Or between 2018 and 2023, alongside former Los Blancos teammate Luka Modric, having landed the prize in 2022 on the back of Real's league and Champions League double. He put up staggering numbers of 44 goals and 15 assists in 46 games that season, so few could dispute his worthiness for the prize.
Ballon d'Or: Who are the last 11 winners of the award?
Here are the last 11 men to win the Ballon d’Or award. You have to go back quite some way…
ByAlex Caple Nov 1, 2023
Things have been somewhat tumultuous for Benzema so far in Saudi Arabia after reports of a dressing room spat with Nuno Espirito Santo prior to the Portuguese's sacking at Al-Ittihad. Despite that, he's maintained a strong goalscoring record, netting 12 in 20 in all competitions and nine in 15 in the league. Only six players have scored more in the Saudi top flight.
One potential issue, especially for a club that is already in danger of breaking the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules, is Benzema's reported salary. The Frenchman apparently earns a whopping £1.65m per week in Jeddah, and even if Chelsea could convince Al-Ittihad to split that salary 50/50, it would be an extraordinary outlay. If they are able to make a deal work, though, it's clear that Benzema could provide the clinical touch Pochettino needs to salvage something from this season.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has earmarked a couple of areas to strengthen before the close of the window and his side are now reportedly keen on an exciting player to bolster the Hoops' Scottish Premiership title bid.
Celtic set for busy closing period of the window…
Nicolas Kuhn has been the only arrival for Celtic so far this window as Rodgers and the Hoops carefully plot their next move between now and the end of the month.
Sky Sports News reporter Anthony Joseph has given some insight into where the Hoops may look next in the transfer market, stating via social media platform X:
Loan targets may be the aim for Celtic as they evaluate not only availability but also affordability. The Daily Record claim that several options from the Premier League have been reviewed as Rodgers looks to provide support to Kyogo Furuhashi, who has become the sole surviving forward at Parkhead for the next few weeks amid Oh Hyeon-gyu and Daizen Maeda's involvement at the Asian Cup.
One familiar name that continues to be mentioned in the left-back position is Liverpool defender Owen Beck and he could move north of the border once again before the deadline if Jurgen Klopp deems that he has appropriate cover in that position amid recent injury concerns involving Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.
