"It’s hard to believe that someone like me could be the Specsavers Admin. But, I just love the power," Dean said as his secret position was revealed. "The ability to judge decisions on the pitch, even if I wasn’t on it. I knew my refereeing days were numbered and I wanted something to keep me busy afterwards. Of course I miss being out on the pitch. But the feeling you get when you post something good, it’s as close as you get to pulling a card out.

"Given my profile, it’s been really to protect my identity. There have even been times when I’ve had to call myself out!"

Coman had to be helped off the pitch in Bayern's 2-0 win over Koln in a major setback for Tuchel's team. The Frenchman withdrew from the action after just 50 minutes and was replaced by Jamal Musiala in a worrying sight for Bayern fans. The 27-year-old has a supposed muscle injury and, to Tuchel's sorrow, may miss the rest of the campaign.

Speaking after the game, Tuchel told : "The big downside to the whole game is the injury to Kingsley Coman. It makes me very sad because I know how hard he worked and how important he is for us. First Serge Gnabry is out, then he and Leroy Sane are doubts [for Wednesday]."

With Coman definitely out for the game on Wednesday, Bayern's injury problems out-wide are deepened. Tuchel explained that Sane and Gnabry are touch-and-go with regards to their availability and will leave Bayern sweating on their fitness. Rangers struck gold by selling £2.5m dud with fewer goals than Dessers in 23/24

Glasgow Rangers went through a summer of change as former head coach Michael Beale was allowed to make widespread alterations to his playing squad.

The likes of Allan McGregor, Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, and Scott Arfield were allowed to leave on free transfers, whilst Antonio Colak and Glen Kamara, among others, were sold by the Scottish giants.

These exits allowed the English tactician to dip into the market to make nine new additions of his own to improve his side for the 2023/24 campaign.

Leon Balogun, Sam Lammers, Cyriel Dessers, Danilo, Jose Cifuentes, Kieran Dowell, Dujon Sterling, and Jack Butland all arrived on permanent deals, alongside a loan swoop for Brighton & Hove Albion forward Abdallah Sima.

Rangers striker Danilo.

Beale's recruitment did not provide him with the desired results to keep the board happy, though, as he was relieved of his duties last month and replaced by Belgian boss Philippe Clement.

However, not all of the ex-Gers assistant's moves in the transfer window were complete failures. One decision that already looks to have been a smart one is the sale of Colak to Italian side Parma, as the striker has struggled to find his form in front of goal this season.

Colak's goal record for Rangers

The Croatia international arrived at Ibrox from Greek giants PAOK in the summer of 2022 under Giovanni van Bronckhorst's management and had a mixed year in Scotland.

Colak hit the ground running for the Light Blues with a superb return of 14 goals and three assists in 24 competitive appearances for the Dutch head coach, which is a return of more than one goal every other game on average.

His form, however, dipped after Beale arrived during the break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The experienced marksman only scored four goals and provided one assist in 15 matches under the English tactician's guidance.

He also failed to perform in Europe as his six Champions League appearances did not leave a positive impression. The lightweight lost a staggering 74% of his duels and failed to provide a single goal or assist in the competition, with two 'big chances' missed for the centre-forward.

Overall, though, Colak ended the 2022/23 campaign with an impressive record in the Scottish Premiership. He recorded 14 goals and one assist in 18 league starts for Rangers, although ten of those came within the first nine games of the term.

This shows that the Croatian finisher came flying out of the blocks as a clinical and lethal goalscorer for the Gers but was unable to sustain it throughout the remainder of the season.

He struggled badly under Beale, as evidenced by his return of one goal every 3.75 outings, and his lack of form in front of goal made his sale earlier this year a reasonable one.

Colak's goal record for Parma

The Croatia international was ditched by Beale over the summer as Serie B side Parma swooped in to secure his services for a reported fee of £2.5m.

Rangers' then-boss hailed the number nine's class and how he handled the situation – referencing his decision to speak with the players and staff to say his goodbyes during pre-season with no bad feelings on either side.

It was, therefore, an amicable split that suited both parties. Colak was able to leave and find a new club after struggling during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign and the Light Blues were able to rake in a sizeable fee for a player who had been underperforming in the months leading up to the window.

Former Rangers striker Antonio Colak.

His woes have, unfortunately, continued in Italy as the 30-year-old dynamo has only scored three goals in 11 Serie B matches and has failed to establish himself as a regular starter for his side.

The ex-Rangers striker has only started three league games for the second division outfit and has struggled to deal with the physicality of the league, with a dismal duel success rate of 25%.

These statistics show that the former Malmo star has not offered a consistent attacking threat and has been bullied by opposition defenders, who have found it far too easy to get the better of him in physical contests.

His struggles throughout the 2023/24 campaign so far are emphasised by the fact that he has scored fewer goals than current Rangers striker Dessers, who has done little to impress since his move to Ibrox.

Dessers' goal record for Rangers

The Light Blues snapped up the Nigeria international from Italian side Cremonese for an initial fee of €5m (£4.3m), per journalist Fabrizio Romano, to bolster their attacking options.

However, the 28-year-old dud has not been able to provide a reliable presence at the top end of the pitch for the Scottish giants with his weak hold-up play and inconsistent finishing.

Dessers has scored three goals in ten Premiership outings and already missed a staggering ten 'big chances' in front of goal, which shows that he has not been able to make the most of the opportunities that his teammates have been providing him with.

Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers.

The right-footed flop has also lost a whopping 79% of his ground duels in the Scottish top-flight, with opposition players being able to comfortably dominate him on the deck.

His European exploits have also left a lot to be desired as the striker has failed to provide a goal or an assist in three Europa League outings, and has lost 81% of his duels.

However, Dessers did score in the Champions League qualifiers and managed one goal in the League Cup for Rangers earlier this season, which means that he has scored two more goals than Colak at club level during the 2023/24 campaign for their respective clubs.

Overall, Beale struck gold with the decision to sell the Croatia international for £2.5m during the summer transfer window as his woeful form in the second half of last season for Rangers and in the opening months of this term for Parma suggest that he would not have been a good option for Clement.

Colak has been outscored by Dessers and has not been able to start games on a regular basis in the second division of Italian football, which is why the Gers could look back on the fee they received for his services and be happy with their business.

Alex Pyecroft impresses on debut as Tasmania take charge

Gabe Bell took four wickets to earn a handy first-innings lead which Ben McDermott’s half-century helped extend

Alex Malcolm28-Nov-2018Four wickets to Gabe Bell and three to debutant Alex Pyecroft has given Tasmania the upper hand against South Australia at Bellerive in Hobart. The Redbacks were bowled out for just 136 on day two, with only four players reaching double figures, to concede a first innings deficit of 49 before the Tigers cruised to 3 for 120 in their second innings.Test incumbent Travis Head was the only Redbacks batsman to provide any lengthy resistance making 49, while Jake Lehmann contributed 28.Bell started the rot removing Jake Weatherald and Callum Ferguson with two cracking deliveries as the surface continued to aid the seam bowlers.Pyecroft, 26, took his first Sheffield Shield wicket claiming Conor McInerney caught and bowled. Head and Lehmann then steadied with a 63-run stand before Pyecroft again intervened with Lehmann edging to first slip. That triggered a collapse as South Australia lost 4 for 7 in 18 deliveries with Pyecroft and Jackson Bird taking two wickets each. Head stood firm reaching 49 from 100 balls before he was given out caught behind attempting to cut. He was none too pleased with the umpire’s decision. The Redbacks were all out inside 52 overs with Bell returning to claim the last two scalps. The Tigers second innings started poorly. Alex Doolan was trapped infront by Daniel Worrall in the third over, but Ben McDermott and Jordan Silk put together and 85-run stand to increase the lead. McDermott became the first player in the match to reach fifty, but he fell shortly after edging Worrall to the keeper.Jake Doran was also caught behind off the third last ball of the day to Worrall. George Bailey copped a nasty blow on the thumb first ball, the penultimate of the day, but he survived the last from Worrall. Silk remained 49 not out and Tasmania will look to extend their lead on day three.

Gibson hopes for fresh start after Newlands saga

The South Africa coach said that his team has moved on from the mishappenings of their previous series, and hoped their opponents would be able to do the same

Liam Brickhill30-Oct-2018Amid the soul-searching around the results of Australia’s Longstaff review, visiting South Africa coach Ottis Gibson pointed to something that was lost in the unfolding uproar since the cataclysmic ball-tampering incident at Newlands in March. When all eyes are focused on events happening off the field, no-one’s talking about the actual cricket.”It’s disappointing when cricket gets lost among all the other stuff, because at the end of the day that’s why we’re all here: to play some cricket,” Gibson said. “When you look at the cricket that was played in that series, after every game there was some sort of incident and the standard of cricket never got mentioned. I thought in the first Test in Durban, [Mitchell] Starc was fantastic and bowled really well. In Port Elizabeth, we were backs against the wall and AB de Villiers makes a brilliant hundred, then you had another incident at the end of that game.”The independent review has suggested that a bullying corporate culture within Cricket Australia contributed to the errant player behaviour that came to a head during a bad-tempered series. Gibson also pointed out another truth that doesn’t fit within an ultra-competitive, win-at-all-costs mindset: ultimately, it’s just a game.”Guys are making friends and playing together in other teams around the world. So when it comes to playing for the national team, you don’t expect them to take that friendship onto the field, but obviously, you don’t want it to boil over into some of the shoulder brushing and all the stuff that happened in South Africa. It’s just a game,” he said, repeating: “It’s just a game”.Gibson refuted the suggestion that there had been especially intense scrutiny of Australia’s handling of the ball during that series, saying that South Africa were well aware that the ball “is being followed all the time”, even before the infamous Cape Town Test. “The international game now, the way cricket is going even in the IPL and other leagues, there’s so much television and so much coverage that the ball is being followed all the time, is what we’ve been told, even before the Cape Town [Test]. So it just seemed like a silly thing to do, bearing in mind the number of cameras and the number of eyes that are on the game at the moment.”We moved on a long time ago. It happened many months ago now. Obviously, it shouldn’t have happened, we all accept that it shouldn’t have happened.”While South Africa might have moved on, that hasn’t been possible for their hosts. The Australian Cricketers Association has reiterated its call for a reconsideration of the harshness of penalties handed down to Steven Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft in light of the findings of the review. Gibson said that hindsight might have changed perceptions about the players’ bans, adding that culpability must fall to CA to decide whether the punishment still fits the crime.”What happened called for strong action and, I guess, that’s what the people who made the decision at the time thought was strong enough,” Gibson said. “Now we’re six months down the road, and everybody has had a bit of time to step back and see what’s going on, and obviously, some people think that it has been too harsh. But was that their same opinion six months ago when it all unfolded? Hindsight gives us the opportunity to step back and look at things, but what happened shouldn’t have happened, and therefore, it called for an action and that’s the action that was taken. It’s up to those people to decide whether it’s too harsh.”Gibson empathised with Australia coach Justin Langer, and admitted that the team South Africa will face in three ODIs and a T20I over the next two-and-a-half weeks have “had their issues”.”It’s been well-documented, and still being documented even now. I’m sure Justin Langer and his coaching team would like to put it all behind them and focus on cricket, and that’s what we’ll be focusing on.”Gibson’s squad has been in Australia preparing for nearly a week, and their tour match against a Prime Minister’s XI will be their first – and only – opportunity for some time in the middle before the opening ODI in Perth on Sunday.”We have had a couple of good days in Perth and we are looking forward to this game,” he said. “It is our first actual match, the guys get tired of net sessions, so we want to get out in the middle.”South Africa are without the experienced pair of Hashim Amla and JP Duminy for this series, with both recovering from injuries, and while they used their limited-overs games against Zimbabwe earlier this month to field-test new options, these ODIs against Australia signal the start of an important next phase of their preparation for the World Cup.”We are halfway to our preparation for the World Cup, that is what we are focusing on,” Gibson said. “This is the next step on that World Cup journey. We have been trying to play a certain brand of cricket, a little bit more positive and aggressive, and we would like to test that out.”The team that Australia has put out, despite what is going on off the field, we have to respect them. They still have quality players. This will be an opportunity for us to test ourselves against them and to see where we are.”

Everton keen on securing signing of “fantastic” ex-Premier League player

Everton are believed to be keen on completing the signing of a former England international – one who has been called "fantastic" in the past.

Everton's points deduction

The Blues are going through an extremely tumultuous period in their history at the moment, with so much going on at the club, both on and off the pitch.

While Sean Dyche and his players have shown clear improvements in recent weeks, there have been massive distractions going on around them, not least the fact that the Blues have been deducted 10 points for breaching financial rules.

Everton make another complaint as board rage at fresh update

The Blues are not at all happy with a recent development.

ByHenry Jackson Nov 24, 2023

It is a decision that has been met with fury by many Everton supporters, with the majority feeling that it is harsh, and it immediately threw Dyche's men straight back into the relegation zone.

Not only has the points deduction been a huge talking point at Goodison Park, but the ongoing takeover of the club is also dragging along slowly. There is no clear sign of the Farhad Moshiri era coming to an end for the time being, with doubts surrounding potential incoming investors 777 Partners.

Everton could also be looking to make new signings once the January transfer window opens, depending on their finances, and they have been linked with a move for a former Premier League player.

Everton want Alex McCarthy

According to an update from Football Insider, Everton are eyeing a move for Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

Southampton'sAlexMcCarthyin action

"Everton have a strong interest in frozen-out Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, sources have told Football Insider. The 33-year-old has 18 months left on his deal at St Mary’s Stadium and lost his place to Republic of Ireland international Gavin Bazunu last season. Everton were tracking McCarthy in the summer and their interest remains alive ahead of the January window.

"Everton will have little money to spend in the transfer market amid the uncertainty caused by their devastating 10-point deduction which was administered last week. However, loan deals and free transfers could be possible avenues available for Toffees boss Sean Dyche as he vies to keep the club in the Premier League."

McCarthy may not be the most earth-shattering signing by Everton if he made the move to Goodison in January, considering he is a veteran who wouldn't be a key starter, but he could still be a savvy addition.

The 33-year-old has picked up a huge amount of experience down the years, with the Blues transfer target making 147 appearances in the Premier League, not to mention winning one cap for England.

Meanwhile, former Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl clearly rated McCarthy highly during their time together at St Mary's, once saying:

"He has been absolutely top drawer. Some of the saves on Monday were just outstanding to be honest. He has been like that from day one since I have been here – not just in games but training. The level of all the goalkeepers has been fantastic but Alex, particularly in the games, has kept us in there. He’s made some very good saves not many keepers would actually make so I’m pleased for him."

McCarthy could be a good backup option to Jordan Pickford, not to mention increasing the English quota in Dyche's squad, so a January move would make plenty of sense.

Rangers have a golden Tavernier replacement in "highly rated" 20 y/o

Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement has enjoyed a solid start to life at Ibrox as they are just one game away from securing their first trophy in 18 months.

The League Cup final against Hearts at Hampden next month gives the Belgian the perfect chance to endear himself to the supporters even more.

The next few weeks could be crucial for the club and the 49-year-old will require all of his senior players to step up and make themselves counted, especially if they have any ambitions of success this term.

While the results on the pitch recently have improved, the January transfer window is fast approaching and the former Club Brugge boss will be keeping an eye on several targets.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

Maybe not in the next window, but he will also be looking to land long-term replacements for players who are approaching the end of their careers, such as Connor Goldson, Borna Barisic and especially James Tavernier.

The captain recently turned 32 and while his attacking contributions are still at a wonderful level, he won't be like this forever and another top class right back should be the priority.

Michael Beale signed Dujon Sterling during the summer transfer window, and he was looked upon as a player who could have the long-term capability to succeed Tavernier on the right side of the defence, but it hasn’t quite worked out that way for the former Chelsea gem.

Dujon Sterling’s Rangers statistics

The 23-year-old came through the ranks at Chelsea, making two appearances for the senior side, before a succession of moves in the lower leagues.

His latest spell was with Stoke City, where he featured 28 times last season and, while not known for his attacking abilities, the defender looked like a reliable backup option to the Gers captain upon signing.

His progress at Rangers hasn’t quite gone to plan, however, as he has played only eight times so far this term, starting just twice and yet to feature for Clement in either the league or Europe.

In the Premiership, Sterling ranks in a lowly 17th spot for accurate passes per game (13.5) along with ranking 12th for tackles per game (one) and 25th for overall Sofascore rating (6.4), proving he hasn’t enjoyed the best of success on the field of play domestically.

It is still early in his Rangers career, though, and he can turn the corner if given the chance, but it doesn’t look like Clement has full trust in his ability.

The Light Blues will be hard-pressed to find a player who can contribute as effectively in the final third as Tavernier, as the Englishman already has 14 goal contributions – 11 goals and three assists – across 22 matches this term already.

James Tavernier’s season in numbers

The right back is outshining pretty much every single Gers player currently in the league as he currently ranks first in the squad for goals and assists (eight) while also topping the pile for big chances created (six) and key passes per game (three), clearly indicating that he is a key player for the club.

While Clement will still get another couple of years out of the captain, Tavernier will eventually need to be replaced and while Sterling was brought in as a backup option, it’s evident he isn’t up to the required ability to be a long-term heir.

At one point, it looked as though former player Nathan Patterson was the ideal heir to his throne, yet the youngster was sold to Everton last January and the Gers are back to square one.

Could Clement turn to another young talent who has had experience in the first team and, with a little bit more confidence, could succeed Tavernier in the right back slot? As in Adam Devine, they have a talent who has been under used this season.

Adam Devine’s career statistics

The 20-year-old was given his senior debut by Giovanni van Bronckhorst towards the tail end of the 2021/22 campaign.

He came on as a sub against Dundee United, while starting against Hearts just a few days later as the manager was resting some first team players for the impending Europa League final in Seville.

Rangers defender Adam Devine.

He impressed sufficiently during those ties, succeeding with 100% of his dribble attempts while being dribbled past just once per game and averaging 53 touches each match, showing that he was keen to impress and grasp the opportunities given with both hands.

It gave the defender a solid platform to work with as Beale had to call on him during the festive season last term due to injuries to Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz.

Once hailed as “highly rated” by former Partick Thistle boss Ian McCall in 2021 after he joined the club on a short loan deal, Devine certainly displayed this talent when required for the Gers last season.

Across six Premiership matches, the Scot not only created two big chances and averaged one key pass per game, showcasing his attacking ability, but he also succeeded with 100% of his dribble attempts and was dribbled past only 0.2 times per game.

The defender even won 1.8 total duels per game – a success rate of 55% – and it was clear that he stepped up to the plate when it really mattered, as the club didn’t lose a single game where he was involved.

Although not quite at the same level to Tavernier at this current moment in time, given more chances in the first team, he could develop into a first class right back.

His versatility at being able to play on either side of the defence will also be a big advantage for him when trying to impress Clement, although he has yet to make an appearance under the Belgian yet.

His time will come, however, and in the long term, he could certainly be a better option than Sterling in order to replace Tavernier on the right side of the defence.

The captain still has plenty to offer, but it won't be long before his excellent spell at Rangers has to come to an end.
