Southampton linked with Tosin Adarabioyo

Southampton’s search for a Jannik Vestergaard replacement is hotting up, with Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo the latest name to be linked with a move to St Mary’s.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Express, Southampton have joined Norwich City in the race to sign the 23-year-old defender, who was a prominent part of Scott Parker’s side last season as Fulham were relegated back to the Championship.

Although the report claims that the former Manchester City man has a £10m release clause in his contract at Fulham following their relegation, contrasting reports suggest that this clause has now expired, which suggests that Southampton may have to pay more than that if they want to prise him away from the West London side.

Would Adarabioyo be a good signing?

Despite Fulham’s less than impressive return in the Premier League last season, Adarabioyo showcased his ability in the top flight and was one of the better performers for the Craven Cottage outfit. He averaged a solid 6.73 rating from WhoScored across the season, which ranked him as the sixth-best player to make at least 10 starts.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has suggested that Southampton will target young players who will cost around the £10m mark this summer, and given that the defender is currently valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, he certainly seems to fit the bill.

During a loan spell with Blackburn Rovers, teammate Darragh Lenihan was full of praise for Adarabioyo, saying: “He’s brilliant. His distribution is excellent, he’s quick, he’s big, he has all the attributes. I’ve said to him that he has all the attributes to play for Manchester City in my opinion. He’s here to learn, and help us out, but he’s a fantastic player.”

The centre-back can offer Hasenhuttl Premier League experience but also has a lot of scope to improve at the age of 23, which seems like exactly the sort of signing the Austrian needs in his current squad.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

Therefore, Martin Semmens should definitely consider bringing Adarabioyo to St Mary’s this summer.

Hamilton gives Scotland bragging rights

Scotland were delighted to record a convincing five-wicket victory over their great rivals Ireland at Mannofield Park with Gavin Hamilton hitting his maiden ODI century

Joy for Scotland’s Dewald Nel as he has Ireland’s Reinhardt Strydom caught at the wicket © Cricket Europe
Scotland were delighted to record a convincing five-wicket victory over their great rivals Ireland at Mannofield Park today. A solid bowling display was followed by Gavin Hamilton’s 115, his maiden one-day century, as he formed an excellent partnership of 122 for the third wicket with Colin Smith (59), the latter already having taken five catches behind the stumps. It was just disappointing that fewer than 200 spectators were present to celebrate the triumph.Scotland’s chase was dominated by the Yorkshire and England former bowling all-rounder, Hamilton, who is a specialist batsman these days. He began the innings in unusual style, driving the first ball through extra cover and taking an all-run four. He soon lost Ryan Watson, uncharacteristically lobbing an easy catch to mid-off without scoring, but did not let this cramp his style. He found useful support from the debutant Qasim Sheikh (23) and Smith, and reached his 50 off 52 balls.Thereafter he slowed down somewhat, but by now Scotland were well on course for victory, and there was some very desperate Irish appealing as Smith settled in with him. Smith passed fifty just before the century partnership was reached and then, with another powerful blow past mid-on, Hamilton reached his hundred off 136 balls. Both batsmen, and Fraser Watts, fell in quick succession before victory was achieved, but these were minor blips and the result was never now in doubt. Andrew White, with two late wickets, returned the best figures, though Kyle McCallan (1 for 34) did a good job in keeping the scoring rate in check during the middle overs. Ireland also maintained a good over rate.Following their rather frenzied, and unsuccessful, approach against New Zealand yesterday, Ireland decided on steadier measures after they batted on winning the toss. But they were up against some fine seam bowling, and when Gary Wilson, playing the anchor role, was out for 39, with the score 66 for 4 in the 20th over, Ireland were in some trouble. The South African Dewald Nel bowled particularly well in an opening spell of 8-4-16-3.The pressure eased when he was rested, and a steady partnership between White (34) and Ryan Haire (54) developed, worth 65 in 16 overs as the 100 came up in the 29th over. Haire, who made his debut yesterday, reached his 50 with two successive boundaries, but then unfortunately gave his wicket away with a gentle catch to backward point. At 153 for 7 in the 40th over, Ireland were subsiding slowly in a swamp of mediocrity. The buck stops with the captain, and McCallan was prepared to accept it. He played himself in carefully and, helped by Thinus Fourie (19 not out), then attacked with the kind of discrimination his team had hitherto been lacking in this tri-series. He hit four fours to score 39 off 38 balls before being out to the final ball of the innings, caught by the keeper flicking down the leg side, making the total 210 for 8.Nel, with 4 for 25, was the pick of the bowlers, and he was well supported by fellow seamers Blain and Gordon Goudie, who took two wickets each. They also deserve credit for completing their 50 overs with 15 minutes to spare, showing teams such as England that it can and should be done, and it meant a target well within reach of their batsmen especially once Hamilton got going. After the match, a delighted Hamilton said that “any century is special,” and it was particularly good to put one over Ireland. He praised a good pitch, which gave assistance to bowlers who put the ball in the right places, but also enabled batsmen to take advantage of anything loose. McCallan felt that his team had played better than they did against New Zealand, and was glad to see Haire reproduce his club form for the national side.

Wolves tempted to sell Pedro Neto

Wolves have started productively in the transfer window this summer but they still face the probability of losing key players.

Ruben Neves and Adama Traore are both pushing for moves away from the Midlands, while Rui Patricio has already sealed an exit.

What’s the word?

One player who the club haven’t actively looked to sell this summer is Portuguese sensation Pedro Neto.

He attracted the interest of Manchester United earlier this summer in a mega £50m move but, according to 90min, the Old Gold are tempted to sell him.

They are weighing up whether they want to grant the youngster an exit, with a number of Europe’s top clubs pursuing his signature.

According to the report from 90min, Spurs, Juventus and Liverpool have all made enquiries in the hope of signing him.

Big error

Wolves are in a position this summer where they may need to sell a few of their prized assets in order to build funds to acquire new players.

However, while somebody like Neves is more expendable, letting Neto walk out of the Midlands this summer would be a huge error of judgement from Bruno Lage; his biggest yet since becoming the club’s new manager.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-ceballos-zinchenko-euros-felix-lage” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

Neto was absolutely magnificent throughout 2020/21 and, in the process of scoring five goals and registering six assists, he was named the club’s Player of the Season.

A dazzling winger adept with the ball on both feet, his frantic style of play has caught the eye of many. He was described as “sensational” by Jamie Redknapp last season, completing 2.1 dribbles and two key passes per match, the highest of any Wolves player.

Neto was also their joint-top scorer and provided their most assists. With that in mind, selling him would be nothing short of catastrophic.

They have signed Trincao to bolster their ranks in the final third and he will likely improve their chances of scoring more goals.

However, after a campaign in which they were missing Raul Jimenez since November with a fractured skull, Wolves need to keep those in the squad who are capable of finding the net regularly.

Neto is such a huge presence in the squad and currently their best player, so allowing him to leave would be foolish. It would also deeply upset the loving Molineux faithful – as a supporter, you never want to see your star players departing.

Rice may get bumper West Ham deal

David Moyes could seal another West Ham masterclass as an exciting claim has emerged…

What’s the word?

According to The Sun, the Hammers are set to try and tie England star Declan Rice down to a bumper deal using wages freed up by the departure of Felipe Anderson.

The £42m flop is set to rejoin Lazio for only £5m, just three years after leaving the Serie A outfit for the London Stadium, so the East Londoners will look to use the extra cash available to keep hold of Moyes’ key man.

Moyes masterclass

In recent weeks, reports had surfaced suggesting that the 22-year-old powerhouse had rejected two new contract offers from the club amid interest from some of the Premier League’s heavyweights, including Chelsea and Manchester United.

The ever-reliable ExWHUemployee claimed that Rice wants to be paid to reflect his ability, considering he has just excelled at Euro 2020, where he picked up his 24th cap for the Three Lions.

Now that Moyes has his own recruitment team in place, this allows the Scotsman to identify where his budget can go and now with Anderson out the door, he could well give Rice the contract he’s deserving of.

It’s thought that Anderson was amongst the club’s highest-earners on around £85k-per-week, whilst Rice only saw his £2k-per-week deal turn into £60k-per-week two years ago.

The Hammers academy graduate is currently valued at £63m by Transfermarkt, which is the highest of any player in the squad right now, so you can’t blame him for wanting to be paid correctly.

This news should also help alleviate any fears amid interest from some of the Premier League’s ‘big six’ – the sort that have the financial muscle to bully GSB into a deal.

If these reports are to be believed, then it puts Moyes in a strong position to keep the England sensation and that should leave many buzzing around the London Stadium.

After delivering the goods with the signings of Tomas Soucek, Vladimir Coufal and Jesse Lingard in recent windows, tying Rice down for the long-term would arguably be the tip of the iceberg and yet another masterclass from the Irons boss.

SAFC fans want Pritchard

Sunderland fans are eager for the club to sign Alex Pritchard this summer after the club were linked with a move for the 28-year-old.

The Black Cats are preparing for the 21/22 campaign, one in which they will once again be targetting promotion to the Championship. However, despite losing a number of players such as Josh Scowen, Max Power, Grant Leadbitter and Charlie Wyke, they have so far made just one signing – a 20-year-old goalkeeper called Jacob Carney (safc.com).

However, it seems they are at least looking at several targets, one of which is Alex Pritchard as per Football League World. The £2.25m-valued attacking midfielder (Transfermarkt) is currently a free agent and struggled at Huddersfield, but he has plenty of talent and could be an astute signing for Sunderland if they can capture his services.

The Black Cats supporters, it appears, would be keen to take him to Stadium of Light, and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts on the speculation.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Pritchard link below

Tottenham fans flock to Kounde claim

Flocking to a Nuno Espirito Santo and Jules Kounde claim made by ABC, via Hotspur Related, many Tottenham fans have shared their views as the Portuguese boss identifies his first summer target.

The 47-year-old’s appointment has finally put an end to Spurs’ long search for a new manager and the Lilywhites can finally now take to the transfer market and start preparing for next season.

Tottenham are said to be eyeing a major defensive overhaul with the club preferably wanting two new signings at the back this summer.

ABC have now come out to reiterate Spurs’ interest in starlet centre-back Kounde, who was targeted by the likes of Manchester City last summer.

They claim that Nuno has personally identified the Frenchman as his first Tottenham target this summer, and despite the fact he wants a Champions League club, there is still time to convince him.

Many Lilywhites fans have now flocked to this claim, with one supporter even dubbing Kounde a potentially ‘perfect signing’.

Starting 33 La Liga matches for Sevilla over 2020/2021, the rising 22-year-old also managed a composed 90.1% pass accuracy out from the back (WhoScored)- displaying a cool head on young shoulders.

Here’s what Tottenham fans had to say as their club allegedly eye a move.

2002 membership looking very healthy indeed for the Cidermen

Before a ball of the new first class cricket season has been bowled, Somerset County Cricket Club membership is looking in a healthy position, thanks to the large numbers who have signed up for 2002

Richard Walsh22-Apr-2002Before a ball of the new first class cricket season has been bowled, Somerset County Cricket Club membership is looking in a healthy position, thanks to the large numbers who have signed up for 2002.Membership secretary Joanne Betsworth told me earlier today: "Membership numbers for the new season are looking very good indeed, and we are well ahead of where we were at the same stage last season, which is all very pleasing. We are especially pleased with the number of new members who have signed up and also the numbers of Junior Sabres, which is a category we have worked very hard to promote."Accounts manager John Fitzgerald confirmed the financial situation and told me: "At the present time we are 20% ahead of where we were at this time in April 2001, which is largely due to the increased membership numbers."With the first home game of the new season against Glamorgan in the Benson & Hedges Cup scheduled to take place at the County Ground a week tomorrow, anyone intending to join should do so now to make the maximum use of their membership.Joining the club could not be simpler, just click on to the membership section on the website and complete the required sections, or telephone 01823 272946 and talk to Jo Betsworth. The club is looking to recruit people to work in the catering department on match days at the County Ground. For a Somerset fan this is a unique opportunity to combine business and pleasure and anyone interested should contact Brian Lee or San Safe on 01823 272946.

Should be a scorcher

Cautious and conservative in their outlook, English cricketauthorities have taken to innovations like night cricket, whiteballs and coloured clothing rather late. In keeping with thisorthodox approach, a tri-series competition was introduced inEngland some 20 years after it first made its debut in Australiain the immediate post-Packer period and well after othercountries adopted it.

© CricInfo

The first such tournament was held in 1998 involving Sri Lanka,South Africa and the hosts. Sri Lanka, then in the midst of theirgreat period following their World Cup triumph in 1996, duly wonthe event defeating England in the final. The competition was not held in 1999 with the World Cup inEngland holding centre-stage. In 2000, England won thetournament, defeating Zimbabwe in the final; the West Indies werethe third team in the fray. Last year, England did not even makethe final, contested between Australia and Pakistan. And yetEngland have been listed as favourites by the bookies for thisyear’s competition, involving Sri Lanka and India.Sri Lanka, despite the fact that are obviously weary at the endof their tour, are listed second favourites while the Indians, freshly arrived in England, have been adjudged as outsiders.A close look at the squads suggests that the bookies might havegot it all wrong. For, on paper, the Indians would seem to have alot of things going in their favour. A formidable batting lineup, an attack based on seam bowling – always favourable inEnglish conditions – and two fine spin bowlers to exploitwhatever turn they can from the pitch.Certainly, both England and Sri Lanka would be hard pressed tooffer a batting line-up as attractive as the one made up byGanguly, Tendulkar, Mongia, Sehwag, Dravid, Laxman, Kaif andYuvraj Singh. This array of stroke-playing batsmen looks capableof running up totals that could be well beyond the reach of boththeir opponents. Even granting the fact that they may beweaknesses in bowling and fielding, it would appear that thebatting is so strong that it can cover up for any deficiency inother departments. But the bookies obviously have done their cricketing homework. They are convinced that the Indian team does not do well abroad, something admitted even by coach John Wright. This isparticularly so in England. The heady days of the World Cup triumph are now almost twodecades ago. The 2-0 victory in the Texaco Trophy series in 1990is a 12-year-old story. Since then, the Indians lost rather badlyin the one-day series to England in 1996 and three years laterjust about made it to the Super Six stage where their challengefizzled out.Of course, it could also be pointed out with some justificationthat neither England nor Sri Lanka even made the Super Six stagein the competition. But there is no denying that the overall formof both these teams is far more consistent in recent times.Evidence of this is seen in the various one-day ratings that haveSri Lanka ahead of both India and England, who are bunchedtogether in the middle. Few would argue against this, even aftertaking into account India’s triumph in the rain-affected limitedovers series in the West Indies.

© CricInfo

Only some six months ago, England came back from a 1-3 deficit todraw a six-match series in India and that should stand them invery good stead for the competition that commences on Thursday. The hosts have retained most of their players, who did so well inIndia, and have added the experience of Alec Stewart, the flairof the in-form Ronnie Irani, the promise of James Kirtley aswell as the bubbling enthusiasm of Alex Tudor.Besides, their established stars have all been among the runs andthe wickets during the season and the emphatic Test seriesvictory over Sri Lanka should have boosted their confidence noend. Even though they will miss the injured Mark Butcher, abatting line-up that has Nasser Hussain, Nick Knight, Stewart,Graham Thorpe, Marcus Trescothick, Michael Vaughan and AndrewFlintoff has to be respected. The bowling, however, may pose problems for Hussain. The injuredAndy Caddick is already out of the reckoning and there are doubtsabout Darren Gough’s availability. If the pace spearhead is notable to pass the fitness test, almost everything would depend onMatthew Hoggard, Ashley Giles, Tudor and Flintoff. In Englishconditions, the quartet could still prove to be a force to reckonwith. Hussain, it has to be remembered, has proved to be aplayer’s captain besides being a shrewd tactician. The withdrawal of Muthiah Muralitharan due to injury willundoubtedly affect Sri Lanka’s chances. But the prospects ofSanath Jayasuriya’s team cannot be written off. In Murali’sabsence, the bowling does look a bit handicapped but then theexperience of Chandana and Samaraweera is bound to come in handy. It is true that the seam bowlers did not exactly come off in theTest series but then the limited overs game is very differentfrom Test cricket and the NatWest series gives Chaminda Vaas andcompany the opportunity to show that they still have a trick ortwo up their sleeve. The batting, even if it fell from their lofty standards in theTest series, was seen in better light than the bowling and aline-up that has the always dangerous captain, Marvan Atapattu,Russel Arnold, Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, AvishaGunawardene and Romesh Kaluwitharana cannot be dismissedlightly.

© CricInfo

However, it must be admitted that the recent form displayed byall the contestants has been rather patchy, symbolised by Englandlosing to Wales on Monday. On the same day, the Indians went downto Kent while the Sri Lankans haven’t exactly been on a winningspree on the current tour.In my book, the strengths and weaknesses of the competing teamsare clearly marked. I normally love sticking my neck out butunlike the bookies, who don’t have an option anyway, I will notdo so this time. The competition is too close to call. About theonly prediction I will make is that it is going to be a scorcherof a NatWest series.
