Newcastle heading for disaster with potential Phil Jones move

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle have made an enquiry for Manchester United defender Phil Jones.

What’s the word?

The Magpies had a bit of a centre-back crisis a few months ago, when the likes of Florian Lejeune, Fabian Schar, Jamal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark were all ruled out with injuries, leading Steve Bruce to call the situation “ridiculous”.

Perhaps with that in mind, The Telegraph claim that United ace Jones has been the subject of a transfer enquiry from the Magpies as they look to reinforce their defence before the end of the transfer window.

Transfer disaster for Newcastle

If Newcastle are seriously contemplating making a move for Jones – who himself has had numerous injury problems in recent years and has missed 123 games for United since joining them – then they really need to have a strong, hard look at themselves.

Whilst he may still only be 28, the £75k-a-week earning Jones has been nothing short of a flop at United, especially given the kind of hype that surrounded him when he burst onto the scene at Blackburn Rovers.

The fact he made just eight appearances across all competitions last season for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, tells you everything you need to know about how low his stock has fallen.

If you were to compare his performances to that of Ciaran Clark, who has also fallen out of the starting picture at St James’ Park (he made just 17 appearances last season), then actually, you would see a player who is worse than the Republic of Ireland international.

As per WhoScored, Jones averaged less tackles, less clearances and committed more fouls on average than Clark last season, whilst the Magpies man also chipped in with two goals too.

Bruce and Newcastle would be heading for an unforgivable mistake if they were to sign a Premier League flop who isn’t even better than one of their fringe options.

Everton making a huge mistake with James Rodriguez move

According to Sky Sports, Everton are closing in on the signing of Real Madrid star James Rodriguez.

What’s the word?

The Toffees have been linked with a whole host of players this summer, including the likes of Napoli midfielder Allan, and Watford ace Abdoulaye Doucoure.

But according to Sky Sports, it may be Rodriguez who is first to join Carlo Ancelotti’s side this summer, with an offer already being presented to Madrid.

The report adds that Everton’s bid is under consideration at the Santiago Bernabeu, and that “it is believed talks between the two clubs are progressing well and an agreement over a deal may be close”. Sky Sports further claim that Rodriguez himself is keen on making the move to Goodison Park, and inclined to put pen to paper on a three-year deal.

Expensive nightmare

The very fact Rodriguez is even being touted with a move to Everton is a testament to the kind of pulling power Ancelotti has brought with him to Goodison Park.

The Toffees don’t have any European football to offer next season, and realistically won’t be challenging for the Premier League title either, so Ancelotti and co will certainly have worked their magic in swaying Rodriguez to join the club.

But whilst on paper it seems like a stunning coup, there are several reasons for Everton to be a bit more cautious about it. Rodriguez is reported to be earning around £200k-a-week at Madrid, which is £80k higher than the Toffees’ two current highest-earners, Bernard and Yerry Mina.

Not only would his wages eat a big chunk out of Everton’s finances, but there’s a real question whether he has the ability to become a success in England. In the measly 14 games he played across all competitions last season, he netted just once and provided only two assists, whilst the campaign before saw him play only 28 times, suffering from knee ligament, calf and adductor problems.

Whilst Ancelotti has gone on record previously to say that he rates him “very highly”, Rodriguez, 29, just may not be the genuine answer for Everton. He may well turn out to be yet another expensive dud that Marcel Brands looks back on with a sense of regret.

Chelsea: Danny Murphy warns Declan Rice he might not start if he joins the Blues

Chelsea are hoping to bring England international Declan Rice to Stamford Bridge this summer to bolster their squad.

The versatile defender-turned-midfielder has been on Frank Lampard’s radar for a while and a move could be put in place for him to join best friend Mason Mount. However, Danny Murphy thinks Rice will be battling for game time if he joins the Blues.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the former Liverpool midfielder has given his take on a potential move to Chelsea for the 21-year-old. Murphy apparently sees West Ham’s star as more of a centre-back than midfielder, which is the position in which he started his senior career. He has warned Rice he likely won’t be picked to start in many games if he is to join the Blues as a midfield man.

“The only thing is, if you look at Chelsea’s predicament, in the midfield area of Jorginho, Kovacic and Kante – Declan would be going ‘unless they got rid of one or two of those, I won’t be playing midfield,'” Murphy stated.

“Although he could compete with them, they wouldn’t spend that much on a player just to have another central midfielder.”

Rice’s current Transfermarkt value is £44.5million, which is a sensible amount for the 21-year-old. Despite operating mainly as defensive midfielder this season, the Englishman could bolster Lampard’s defence, particularly as the club continues to go under transition. However, talks of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho leaving the club are being held and Rice could be thrown a lifeline which finds him facing less competition for his preferred role.

Arsenal news: Gunners identify new £25m target as Lacazette exit rumours persist

Without a shadow of a doubt, Arsenal still have one of the best frontlines in the Premier League despite their struggles prior to Mikel Arteta’s arrival. The young coach is slowly but surely getting the best out of them and both Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are surely among the most important pieces of that jigsaw.

However, the former has been continuously linked with a move away from the Emirates, lately specifically to Juventus and Serie A, and the Gunners will have to have a plan B in place should that actually happen. According to The Sun’s exclusive report, they are considering tabling a £25m bid for Ajax’s star, Quincy Promes.

This, of course, is not exactly the first time we see Promes and Arsenal mentioned in the same sentence. The 28-year-old Dutch forward has been linked with the Gunners last year following some stellar performances. And this campaign, he managed to net 16 goals and add five more assists to his tally across 28 games played before Eredivisie got shut down due to the recent outbreak.

Needless to say, Arteta sees him as a good option should Lacazette really decide to leave the Emirates. The Sun even quote one of their sources close to the player saying: “Quincy would go in a heartbeat. It would be a great move for him – and Arsenal.”

Of course, we shouldn’t forget Arsenal are also really close to finalising a deal for now-former Chelsea star Willian but this would be an additional boost for their already impressive attacking force.

Verdict

Losing Lacazette would surely have a big impact on the team as a whole. His synergy with Aubameyang and general importance to the team cannot be denied. For that reason, and regardless of whether they can get Promes or not, Arteta should be focused on first ensuring the Frenchman stays put at the Emirates.

And then if he wants more firepower, the Dutchman would be a great option too.

Newcastle fans react over Hirving Lozano transfer report

Newcastle United’s prospective takeover by a Saudi Arabian-backed consortium is yet to be official but that hasn’t stopped transfer rumours circling around the northeast sleeping giants.

They’ve been linked to the likes of Gareth Bale, Philippe Coutinho and Kalidou Koulibaly – and now one of the latter’s current teammates.

According to Arena Napoli, the Magpies have ‘started talks’ with Mexican winger Hirving Lozano over a €40m (£35.8m) move this summer, although nothing is concrete although that hasn’t stopped supporters from discussing the potential transfer.

The 24-year-old has hardly been a prominent figure under Gennaro Gattuso this campaign, managing only 721 minutes in Serie A and a total of 28 appearances in all competitions, via Transfermarkt.

Lozano only joined Napoli from PSV in the summer where in his final season, he found the net 19 times as well as providing nine assists, per WhoScored.

He’s able to play anywhere along the front three and would certainly bolster Steve Bruce’s attacking armoury given that his only options out wide appear to be Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron.

Celtic fans drool over Scott Brown footage

Scott Brown is going to be remembered as a massive Celtic legend when he retires – if he isn’t already considered one.

13 years at the club. 566 appearances. Club captain.

The 34-year-old is entering the twilight years of his career but it’s clear to see that he still is playing his part under Neil Lennon having featured a whopping 50 times this season alone. He’s even bagged five goals, which has him well on course for his best-ever goalscoring campaign (Transfermarkt).

This week popular Hoops Twitter account @celticbible posted a clip of the veteran as he pulls off a “sublime” piece of skill to beat Rangers’ Graham Dorrans, and supporters have been salivating over it since.

There’s arguably no one who understands the Old Firm derby more than Brown having played in it so frequently over the course of his career.

Although, he’s not usually known for his silky technical ability but more his brute playing style and aggressive demeanour, so this comes as a nice alternative angle.

Nottingham Forest have to take a risk in January despite glum transfer message

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Penny pinching will not end in success.

That’s the policy that Nottingham Forest need to adapt when they approach the upcoming transfer window, or they could end up regretting it big time.

What’s he said?

Speaking during a Q&A on Nottinghamshire Live, journalist Barry Cooper was asked about what the chances were Forest would go in for someone like Dwight Gayle in January. However, he provided a rather glum response.

“Because of the system that Forest operate with, bringing somebody in of genuine quality, that would make a difference is not going to be an easy task, especially when you’re trying to balance risk against reward and stay within FFP.”

A risk they have to take

Whilst we have raised on FFC how going for someone like Gayle might not work for Nottingham Forest, the principle remains the same, whether it be about signing him or any other player, striker or not, that Forest think will help them get promoted.

With the amount of money that waits on the other side in the Premier League, you can’t afford to penny pinch, you simply have to take that risk.

You don’t get anywhere in this division without a little bit of aggression giving you a boost.

If you take a look at Fulham back in 2017/18, they were sixth going into January transfer deadline day, then they went out and signed Aleksander Mitrovic, 12 goals later, they find themselves lifting the playoff trophy at the end of May as they got promoted.

The same goes for West Ham United in 2011/12, they went out and brought in Ricardo Vaz Te on transfer deadline day, and he went on to score the winner in the playoff final.

If there is a player that you truly believe will be of benefit to you in the hope for promotion, then you have to go out and get him and damn the expense.

The fans won’t blame you for being ambitious and missing out, because at least you showed that you were willing to put your money where our mouth was, literally in this example.

Deal with the consequences later, but when the opportunity presents itself, don’t be scared to push the boat out and make the deal, rather than end up regretting it when he puts on past you to keep you down.

Everton’s Jordan Pickford could leave Goodison Park, says Tony Cascarino

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Tony Cascarino feels that Jordan Pickford could leave Goodison Park to try and rediscover his form between the sticks.

What did he say?

The £100,000-a-week star has been at Everton for the past two years and has since established himself as England’s number one. In his 98 appearances for the club, Pickford has kept 30 clean sheets and helped the Blues finish eighth last season.

In that time last season, the Englishman conceded just 46 goals in the league – the fifth-lowest. Pickford would also be vital for England in their fourth-placed World Cup finish last summer, playing a telling role in the country’s first-ever penalty shootout win at the tournament.

Cascarino told The Times: “Yet another entry in the catalogue of Jordan Pickford errors shows why the Everton keeper’s days as England’s number 1 are numbered… beaten easily by a set piece, (which) went almost straight at him. His poor form has slipped under the radar.

“Fraser Forster and Joe Hart lost form and moved on in past seasons and I think Pickford, the way he is going, will follow suit and leave Goodison Park. He is a rash goalkeeper at the best of times and makes far too many mistakes to continue to be Gareth Southgate’s first choice for the national team with a major tournament coming up next year.”

Pope and Heaton ready to pounce

This season has been entirely different from the form the £100,000-per-week star showed last year.

So far, Everton have conceded 16 goals in 10 league games and his error against Brighton & Hove Albion was just one of many this season.

Not only is Pickford’s form at Everton a concern for the club, but it will certainly be a major worry for Gareth Southgate with the Euro’s on the horizon.

And it’s not like he doesn’t have any attractive alternatives to chose from either.

Nick Pope and Tom Heaton have made 2.9 saves per game in the league so far, whilst Pickford has averaged 2.4. The Everton man has also conceded more goals than Pope, with the Burnley keeper letting in 15 to his 16.

Southgate will have a decision to make next summer, but Pickford’s form of late suggests it won’t necessarily be one involving his 2018 number one.
