Crystal Palace fans react sarcastically as Stephen Henderson concedes six on debut

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Crystal Palace fans have reacted sarcastically on Twitter after summer signing Stephen Henderson conceded six goals on his debut in the 6-2 pre-season friendly defeat against Barnet on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old was one of four senior players – along with Alexander Sorloth, Connor Wickham and Jairo Riedewald – to make the starting XI at The Hive, and things looked to be going well as the visitors took an early 2-0 lead.

However, they were soon pegged back and then taken apart in the second half by the National League side, with Henderson picking the ball out of his net six times in total.

The 6 ft 2 goalkeeper is the south London outfit’s only arrival to date this summer having joined on a free, and it’s fair to say that his bow for the Eagles hasn’t gone down too well.

Palace supporters were quick to take to social media to provide a sarcastic reaction to his performance, with one calling it a “Dougie masterclass again” in relation to Freedman, who is sporting director at Selhurst Park and partly responsible for bringing new players to the club.

In the video below, find out which Chelsea academy prospect is reportedly being lined up to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Crystal Palace…

Another individual labelled it as a “great debut for Henderson”.

Given they already had Wayne Hennessey and Vicente Guaita the addition of the stopper was never going to be an exciting one, and there are clearly more pressing matters for them in the market – right-back and striker spring to mind – with the window due to close in three-and-a-half weeks’ time.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Matt Law has got his verdict of Aston Villa’s transfer activity spot on

[ad_pod ]This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…In a tweet posted by Daily Telegraph journalist Matt Law, he has expressed his admiration for the work done by Aston Villa in the transfer market, claiming they aren’t like the Fulham team of last season.

What’s he said?

Aston Villa have signed no fewer than six players in the transfer window so far and with speculation mounting surrounding Tom Heaton, it doesn’t look as though they’re going to stop.

Recent reports claim they’re also in the market for Egyptian’s Ahmed Hegazi and Trezeguet too.

The Villans were of course promoted from the Championship last term and they’ve wasted no time in preparing their squad for the Premier League, even splashing out over £40m on Wesley and Tyrone Mings.

However, Telegraph journalist Law, has rubbished comparisons between how they and Fulham have operated in terms of their spending.

A segment of his tweet simply said:

“Apart from spending money, aren’t they the complete opposite?”

Villa doing fantastic work

Before the window opened Christian Purslow admitted that the Villans wanted to build a young and exciting team that could establish themselves in the division.

Those comments are now certainly evident from what Law has hinted at, suggesting they had indeed lived up to that promise.

Despite spending large sums on two specific players, one of them was at the club last season and the other is only 22 years of age.

Last summer, Fulham spent over £100m on new players before they ended up going straight back down to the Championship.

It’s easy to see why there could be fears over the amount Villa have spent so far but they’re being pragmatic about the way they go about things.

After all, they’ve brought in three players they had on loan last season on temporary deals which goes to show they’re keen on keeping their spine together.

The Midlands outfit have also brought in Matt Targett, a player who at the age of 23 is someone they can develop further and adds a fresh dynamic to their defence. He created 1.4 chances per game last year which shows he’s exciting.

On the evidence above, Law has hit the nail on the head.

Comparisons being drawn with Fulham are perhaps wide of the mark, but we’ll have to wait until the season starts properly to assess whether they got things right.

West Ham fans unsure on Isaac Hayden links

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United fans have been linked with a move for Isaac Hayden, per ClaretandHugh, but fans are unsure on the prospective move.

The Hammers are said to have identified the Newcastle United midfielder as a possible alternative to Andre Gomes after missing out on the Barcelona star.

Indeed, the latter, who spent the 2018-19 season on loan at Everton, has set his heart on a move to Goodison Park, per The Guardian.

Hayden, per the report, would cost around £15m if Newcastle do decide to cash in.

Indeed, manager Manuel Pellegrini is keen to add depth to the centre of the park, with the club looking to find support for Declan Rice and Mark Noble, and the 24-year-old has been identified as the best alternative to the Portugal international.

But supporters are lukewarm on the move, with Hayden having spent three years at St James’ Park, with one even claiming that the polarising figure of Pedro Obiang is a better alternative in the Irons’ XI.

Forget it: Tottenham fans are against a summer swoop for Dani Ceballos

[ad_pod ]

According to El Desmarque, Tottenham Hotspur are the ‘main player’ in regard to the clubs interested in landing Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos.

The report even claims that Spurs would be willing to pay between £35m and £44m to land the Spaniard in this summer’s transfer window.

Ceballos joined Real Madrid from Real Betis in 2017.

The midfielder has made 56 appearances for the capital giants in all-competitions – contributing five goals and two assists in the process.

Ceballos was hardly used in the latter stages of the 2018-19 campaign, however, with returning head coach Zinedine Zidane seemingly not a fan of his talents.

The 22-year-old has won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, two Club World Cups and one Spanish Super Cup during his time at the Bernabeu.

Let’s hope so: Everton fans react to latest developments on Andre Gomes

[ad_pod ]

According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton will face competition for Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes in this summer’s transfer window.

Gomes has spent the 2018-19 campaign on loan at Everton, having joined the club from the Spanish champions ahead of the start of the season.

The 25-year-old has been impressive for the Toffees this term and according to the Liverpool Echo, Marco Silva’s side are the favourites to sign him this summer.

However, the same report has said that the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Roma and Inter Milan are closely monitoring developments.

It remains to be seen what plans Barcelona – eliminated from the Champions League after a 4-0 loss at Anfield on Tuesday night – have for the Portuguese this summer.

In this era of ‘big 6’ dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

Everton are seemingly well-placed to secure a deal, though, and the Merseyside club’s fans have been on social media offering their views on the latest developments.

Crystal Palace: Jack Grealish can fit right in as Wilfried Zaha’s potential replacement

Despite having ridden on Wilfried Zaha’s brilliance for the past few seasons, Crystal Palace are finally ready (as per the Daily Mail) to let go of their prized possession this summer at the right price.

Indeed, there is seemingly too much interest mounting on him to ignore and even the Eagles cannot hold him back anymore. Well, providing they get £80m, of course.

While they seem to be prepared to let him go, Palace will definitely bring a huge amount for their star, if he were to depart. Not only because they want a big profit, but they’ll need to use those resources into signing a proper replacement or two. So it’s of little surprise that, according to further reports from the Daily Mail, they want Aston Villa star Jack Grealish to be the sizzling Zaha’s replacement.

Grealish has been the rising star from the Championship, lighting up Villa Park with some moments of utter brilliance this campaign. He’s scored 6 and assisted 6 so far (as per Transfermarkt), but it’s irresistible demeanour on the ball which has won over many plaudits. Grealish can weave through defences with the ball, is creative with his incisive balls and is capable of scoring some stunning goals.

Frankly, he’s absolutely magic at times.

If the Eagles want to retain Zaha’s ability on the ball to win them penalties (we joke), Grealish is the perfect man to keep the fans dazzled. If the 23-year-old’s influence in glowing up Villa’s attractive attacking game has proven anything, he can definitely spice up Palace’s attack with his diligent work.

The youngster’s swagger is something which will be loved at Selhurst Park. If the Eagles want to replace Zaha by making a statement on a player who can recreate the sparks the Ivorian brought to their attack, Grealish is the man to rely upon.

Match Preview: Chelsea vs West Ham United

[ad_pod ]

Chelsea are set to welcome West Ham United to Stamford Bridge this evening in a fixture which the hosts simply have to win to keep their dream of qualifying for the top-four alive.

The visitors have little to play for but they have a reputation for saving their most outstanding performances for the top-six clubs, so the Blues will be wary of the threat they could pose in the all-London affair.

Chelsea go into the game on the back of a resounding 3-0 victory over Brighton last week, while the Hammers arrive after being outplayed by Everton at the London Stadium in a 2-0 defeat.

Ahead of the game, Football FanCast have provided an in-depth preview, including potential starting XI’s and what the history books tell us.

What History Tells Us

Historically speaking, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have struggled to claim three points at the Bridge. Their last win away at Chelsea arrived in 2002 when an 84th minute strike from no other than Paolo Di Canio secured a dramatic 3-2 victory for the visitors.

That stands alone as their only win at Chelsea since the turn of the Millennium, but a 1-1 draw last season suggests that they could stand a chance of breaking their hoodoo tonight.

The Blues boast a superior but not completely dominant head-to-head record, and with holes clearly there to be picked in Maurizio Sarri’s system an unlikely win could be on the cards.

Key Battle

The central midfield battle could ultimately decide our Fixture in Focus. Andre Gomes and Idrissa Gueye dominated the central area against West Ham last time out, dictating the tempo and breaking up play with seamless ease.

Chelsea’s offering of midfielders pose a markedly different challenge for Declan Rice at the base of midfied, and stopping a revamped N’Golo Kante from marauding into the penalty area will be one of his most fundamental tasks.

The holding midfielder turned box-to-box man has made less tackles and interceptions than Rice so far this season, but that reduction in defensive output has been traded off for an extra dose of creativity and forward-thinking dynamism.

These two are likely to lock horns in what promises to be a fascinating battle between two of the league’s finest midfielders.

Ref in Focus

Chris Kavanagh, 34, has been appointed as the referee ahead of the game. That his away win bias stands at just 16.7% suggests that the travelling Irons are up against it as they bid to record a rare victory at Stamford Bridge.

What we can expect is a free-flowing game, as Kavanagh has only given out an average of seven fouls per game in the previous two Chelsea fixtures he has been in charge of this season.

West Ham, meanwhile, have won just one of the four encounters Kavanagh has refereed this season, drawing two and losing the other.

Compared to the other eighteen referees who have been appointed for a Premier League fixture so far this season, Kavanagh is on the lenient side and is generally reluctant to award fouls, penalties or red cards.

Team News

Both Marcos Alonso and Pedro are carrying knocks and facing late fitness tests ahead of the fixture. The former has been engaged in a battle with Emerson for a starting berth at left-back in recent weeks and the Brazilian could keep his place in the side with question marks remaining over Alonso’s fitness.

Hudson-Odoi’s electric performance against Brighton, meanwhile, should ensure that he keeps his place in the starting XI with Pedro struggling.

We’re predicting that Sarri will name an unchanged team from the side that started last Wednesday, with Olivier Giroud keeping Gonzalo Higuain on the bench after notching his first league goal of 2019 against the Seagulls.

Pellegrini is set to welcome Felipe Anderson back into the fold tonight after his notable absence against Everton. Samir Nasri is back in training and could feature for the Hammers as his short-term deal ticks towards expiry.

A 4-2-3-1 system has been deployed to excellent effect against some of the top-six sides this season – most recently against Liverpool – so it’s likely that the Chilean will use a similar system to stifle Chelsea’s threat.

We’re anticipating a return for Mark Noble after West Ham were overran in midfield last time out, while Michail Antonio, Javier Hernandez and Anderson also return in four changes.

Greg Docherty as Rangers’ No. 10 next season

Rangers’ main focus from here on in until the end of the season will be to secure a European spot after failing to keep the pressure on Celtic who sit at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

The Light Blues haven’t exactly been perfect this season as a number of things have let them down, but when Steven Gerrard has got the best out of his side they’ve been almost unstoppable.

Indeed, one big void that needs to be filled in the summer is in the No.10 role, as Josh Windass’ departure has left a hole which has let Rangers down at times in the current campaign.

However, Steven Gerrard has already found the perfect playmaker but he just hasn’t realised it yet, as Greg Docherty is set to rock up at Ibrox in the summer once his loan spell expires at English League One side Shrewsbury Town.

The Scotsman has produced nine goals and 11 assists in all competitions in England. He usually operates as a central midfielder but he’s managed to score five goals and has provided two assists in 12 appearances in the No.10 role.

He’s developed massively at Meadow Lane with his passing game and finishing ability coming on leaps and bounds, so he could be the man to fill Rangers’ current creativity void in the final third.

Rangers fans will be absolutely delighted with Docherty’s displays at his loan club this season and they’ll be extremely delighted to see him in action next season. Indeed, supporters have been crying out for a playmaker and Gerrard is too (as per Scottish Sun), after failing to get the job done back in the January transfer window.

Of course, using him in the No.10 role next season would also save the club millions as they won’t have to splash out on bringing someone in. This would allow the club to invest in other areas as they look to dethrone Celtic.
