Dolphins terminate contracts of five seniors

Andrew Hall, Johann Louw, Alfonso Thomas, Pierre de Bruyn and Hylton Ackerman have been informed that they are no longer required by the Durban-based team

Firdose Moonda17-Feb-2010The Dolphins franchise has terminated the contracts of five senior players with immediate effect, with a view to developing younger players and unearthing local talent. Andrew Hall, Johann Louw, Alfonso Thomas, Pierre de Bruyn and Hylton Ackerman – whose contracts were to expire at the end of the season – have been informed that they are no longer required by the Durban-based team.”We need to develop younger players,” Jessie Chellan, the KwaZulu-Natal CEO said. “Everything was done in an amicable way and all the players understood why we were letting them go.” He said the franchise wanted to concentrate more resources on unearthing local talent that would form the squad’s base. Richard Pybus and Lance Klusener have also been roped in as additional coaches to work alongside Graham Ford.Ackerman believed the franchise did the “right thing”, given the unsuccessful season they have had. “In terms of moving forward, the franchise, literally, does not have the right personnel in terms of players,” he told Cricinfo. “If you look at the players, all of them do okay but there are no match-winning performers.”Ackerman has not played for the Dolphins since November last year and he said he was “not surprised” to hear that they had no further use for him. “I’m not upset, but for someone like Johann, who has been successful, it’s not a nice thing to have happened. There was a general feeling that the franchise was shopping around too much and not bringing their own players in, so it’s a good thing that they are going to develop players.”Of the five players, Louw is the only one from the region. Ackerman is originally from the Cape, but spent time at the Lions and the Warriors. Hall is from Johannesburg as well but signed with the Dolphins on his return from the unofficial ICL. De Bruyn and Thomas were part of the Titans.Despite the amicable settlement, Tony Irish, CEO of the South African Cricketer’s Association (SACA) said his organisation would be looking into the matter. “We don’t believe that what happened was right for the players,” said Irish. “All of them are technically out of a job from today.” Chellan confirmed that Irish had began discussions with him but said that only one player had an issue regarding the termination of his contract. All five players – who will be paid the amounts outstanding on their contracts – appear to have plans in place for the future. Ackerman was due to retire at the end of the season and will be doing television commentary, while Thomas and Hall both have County contracts. Louw will be playing for the Cape Cobras. The Dolphins have had a poor season and are winless in the Standard Bank Pro20, with one match to go. They did make it to the MTN40 final, after a surprise victory over the Titans and they lie second from the bottom in the SuperSport Series. They have named an inexperienced side, with four franchise debutants, to take on the Lions in a Pro20 match on Friday. The new faces are Cameron Delport, Vyash Gobind, Ruan Pietersen and Khaya Zondo, all of whom hail from Natal and have been playing in the amateur divison.

Pressure builds on Gayle's men

At the start of the series Chris Gayle tipped a 4-1 win for West Indies, but given their predicament he would probably settle for 1-4

Start time 1325 (0325 GMT)The Big PictureAt the start of the series Chris Gayle tipped a 4-1 win for West Indies, but given their predicament he would probably settle for 1-4. Calling the tourists out-classed in the opening exchanges is being polite to guests and if they lose in Sydney on Friday the five-game contest will be decided with two matches spare. After West Indies’ fight in the Test series earlier in the season, the follow-up campaign has been hugely disappointing, although Gayle hasn’t been helped by a batch of injuries which kept many of his best men at home. Batting has been the most serious problem, with the tourists managing 143 on the way to a 113-run loss in Melbourne, and 170 in Adelaide after being 4 for 16. The second game, which was watched by only 8378 spectators, was finished in the 27th over of the chase.Australia have been outstanding throughout the limited-overs segment of the summer and are on a 10-match winning streak. With a 2-0 lead, the hosts have been able to rest key players in Shane Watson and Brad Haddin, but there won’t be any relief for West Indies as the locals pursue an undefeated summer.Form guide (most recent first)Australia WWWWW
West Indies LLLLL
Watch out for…Everything for West Indies currently revolves around Chris Gayle. The match in Adelaide was basically over after Gayle’s first-ball departure and he must find a way to escape from the restrictions Australia have placed on him. Over the past week Gayle has remained cheery and upbeat in public but in his private moments he must feel like a one-man band. He is so important that at the moment the scenario is Gayle out, game over.Ricky Ponting has run into some good form with scores of 55, 49 and 57 not out in his past three games, but will be wanting more. With his developing team doing incredibly well, he can relax at the crease, which isn’t a good thing for the opposition bowlers. He pulled Kemar Roach in Adelaide, showing he is not haunted by the fast man’s short balls which got him in the Perth Test, and will look to sign off with a century to seal the series.Team news The wicketkeeper Tim Paine and Adam Voges come into the squad for Shane Watson and Brad Haddin, who are resting. Paine has opened in 14 of his 15 ODIs and will slot in with Shaun Marsh at the top. With Watson out, Australia could play all four fast men and Nathan Hauritz, which would leave James Hopes and Voges to miss out.Australia (possible) 1 Shaun Marsh, 2 Tim Paine (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Cameron White, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Mitchell Johnson, 8 Ryan Harris, 9 Nathan Hauritz, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Doug Bollinger.West Indies were unchanged in the second game but after two horrible defeats will have to do something to spruce up the side. Gayle has talked about needing some substance in the middle order, which could give Brendan Nash an opening, while Wavell Hinds is another option, possibly for the struggling Runako Morton.West Indies (possible) 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Wavell Hinds, 3 Travis Dowlin, 4 Narsingh Deonarine, 5 Brendan Nash, 6 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 7 Kieron Pollard, 8 Dwayne Smith, 9 Nikita Miller, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Kemar Roach.Pitch and conditionsPakistan chose to bowl first at the SCG last month and were rolled for 127 in their chase as the bowlers took advantage of seaming conditions. It has been another wet lead-up and there are storms predicted for Friday afternoon, along with a maximum of 31C. If that happens the bowlers will be happy again.Stats and trivia West Indies’ top six batsmen have scored 150 runs in the past two games while Australia’s top four have managed 310 Only one game at the SCG has been won by the batting side from the final ball of the 50th over. That came in 1995-96 when Michael Bevan starred against West Indies West Indies have twice scored fewer than 100 at the SCG, with 87 in 1992-93 and 91 in 2000-01Quotes “At 2-0 down in a five-match series, this is the time for some of our players to come of age.”

“Every time we start a series that’s our goal, to go undefeated. It’s no different in this series. We played really well against Pakistan. We gave them nothing and we’ll be doing that against the West Indies.”

Postecoglou must unleash Johnston today

While Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side overcame a rather large hurdle in the Premiership title race on Thursday evening, securing a 1-0 win over third-placed Hearts, the victory came at quite a significant cost for the 56-year-old manager and his side.

Indeed, Jota, Stephen Welsh and Anthony Ralston all had to be substituted due to injury, while Carl Stafelt also appeared to finish the fixture with a knock to his knee.

As such, it looks as if Celtic will travel to Dundee United today with something of a depleted squad. However, speaking after the Hearts game, Postecoglou suggested that the injuries picked up by a number of his regular starters will, in turn, provide an opportunity for those who are yet to get many games under their belt this term.

The 56-year-old said: “We saw on Thursday night that Adam Montgomery had to come on and he has not played for four or five weeks. We still have a fair chunk of important games coming up after [Real] Betis so it makes sense to get some minutes into some of the other guys so that when we call on them they will have played in this period.

“James McCarthy, Mikey Johnston, Liel Abada and Nir Bitton all come into that category. There is an opportunity to get some minutes into their legs and have them ready when required.”

Postecoglou must unleash Johnston

One of the players Postecoglou mentions above, Mikey Johnston, would appear to be in more need than most for regular first-team minutes, as, since his return from injury earlier this season, the 22-year-old has started just once for the Hoops.

Indeed, the winger has endured a frustrating last couple of years at Celtic, with the £900k-rated man featuring in just 10 fixtures last season due to injury, as well as missing a large portion of the start of the current campaign with a knock.

However, the former Scotland U21 international has proven that, when he is fully fit, he can be an extremely useful player in the Bhoys’ attack, scoring six goals and registering six assists over 22 appearances back in 2019/20, as well as bagging five goals and one assist over 23 appearances in 2018/19.

Furthermore, Celtic captain Callum McGregor is quite clearly convinced of the £7.9k-per-week forward’s ability, with the 28-year-old midfielder stating: “He’s such a brilliant talent, bags of ability, bags of potential and he’s one as well that the manager’s asking a lot of him physically.

“He’s responding really well and the guys are doing some great work with him in the physio department and sports science to really get him to a level where he can go and make that impact. Against Hibs, I thought he was sensational.”

As such, with it being clear that Postecoglou simply must begin rotating his side more frequently if he is to avoid a catastrophic injury crisis at Parkhead, the 56-year-old must unleash Johnston against Dundee United this afternoon, as the winger could well prove to play pivotal in Celtic’s Premiership push this season – if given the chance.

Tottenham: Insider praises Sessegnon turnaround

As per Football Insider, a Tottenham source has sung Ryan Sessegnon’s praises as he produced an “amazing” turnaround in Spurs’ 3-0 win over Norwich.

The Lowdown: Struggling for minutes

Sessegnon has not had the start he would have wished for since arriving at Tottenham in 2019 for a hefty fee of £24.3m.

The 21-year-old has been involved in just 79 minutes of play across two Premier League games this season. The left-sided starlet has suffered from two separate injuries which stagnated his 2021/22 campaign; the longest of which left him out of action for 74 days – missing a total of 14 games.

He never even played a Premier League match under former manager Nuno Espírito Santo, as he was either injured or on the bench.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The youngster made his return from injury in Spurs’ 2-1 win over Leeds, after coming on as a substitute in the latter stages of the second half, but was then sidelined once again as he was sent off in the UEFA Europa Conference League, as the Lilywhites lost 2-1 to Slovenian side NŠ Mura.

The Latest: A big turnaround

Sessegnon came on to in the 22nd minute to replace Sergio Reguilon who suffered an injury on Sunday. Lilywhite Rose insider John Wenham (via Football Insider) was blown away by the Englishman’s performance, saying: “He produced one of the best performances I’ve seen from him after he came on.

“Sessegnon looked like a real option, he was really hugging that left-hand side.

“There was one ball he put in that was right across the face of the goal, unfortunately, no one was there to turn it in.

“That was much, much better from Sessegnon, I was so pleased.

“He was rightly sent off against Mura, I have no complaints with that. But what an amazing response from him.

“Clearly he’s knuckled down at Hotspur Way and I really hope he can build on that now.”

The Verdict: More minutes to come

Following Reguilon’s injury, it is expected that Sessegnon will be receiving more minutes in the upcoming weeks. Even though the former has claimed his issue is not serious, it is surely a warning sign for the manager to rotate the position during the hectic winter period.

Conte will surely use this time to assess the player and decide whether he will be included in his long-term plans.

Former Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic likened the 21-year-old to Real Madrid ace Marcelo after previous comparisons were made with fellow Galácticos star Gareth Bale, so there is certainly talent there, but it will be up to Conte to decide if the youngster possesses the full package.

Watson wants high intensity

Shane Watson believes Australia can deal with the increase in pressure and “argy bargy” as the Ashes reaches its business end

Peter English05-Aug-2009Shane Watson is desperate for Australia to lift their intensity to match England at Headingley from Friday as they battle to stay in the Ashes. The tourists must win the fourth Test to have a chance of taking the series and Watson believes his team can deal with the increase in pressure and “argy bargy” as the contest peaks.”We need to raise the intensity,” Watson said after Australia’s training session on Wednesday. “We’ve been able to do it for a period of time, but we haven’t been able to do it consistently, to keep it going for the whole five days. That’s something we know we need to achieve to win this series.”The sides became engaged in frequent on-field arguments during the third Test when the Australians, who were led by Mitchell Johnson, vowed to get in the faces of the home batsmen. It added a further element to an already gripping campaign while showing the strain from both camps as the players seek to land the winning blow.Watson has predicted more edge at Leeds. “Yeah, definitely,” he said. “It’s getting closer to the end. It’s great to have some competitive banter out there. Everyone’s going hammer and tongs to give yourself the best chance of winning and there’s normally a bit of friction in the crowd as well.”After taking Phillip Hughes’ spot at Edgbaston, Watson stepped up with two half-centuries as an opener and will face more close examinations in his new role this week. If it’s cloudy at Headlingley the ball will move consistently through the air, but if it’s sunny the surface should be excellent for batting.Watson is usually a middle-order player and has had to tone down his style to cope with life at the top of the order in England. “When the ball is swinging around you can’t be as aggressive as you would be batting in the middle order, but it’s something that I really enjoy the challenge of,” he said. “Playing against a brand new ball is great fun.”It wasn’t the start of the innings that troubled Watson in Birmingham, but what happened when he started to think of reaching three figures. He was out for 62 on the second morning, having spent the previous night wondering how far he would get, and survived a torrid period from Andrew Flintoff on the final day before succumbing to James Anderson. He was struck on the arm trying to avoid a Flintoff lifter but seemed convincing when he said he liked the experience of facing England’s hero. “I have felt confident out there once I got going,” he said. “With the short ball that hit me, that is part and parcel of dealing with guys who can bowl fast. It didn’t hurt too much so it was okay.”While Watson’s second match as opener is a subplot to the game, everything comes back to how Australia will cope over the next week as they try to stay in the series. “There’s pressure definitely on us,” he said. “We’ve got to be at our best in the last two Tests for us to be able to achieve the things we want to achieve.”

West Ham prepare Pedro Aquino bid

According as per Aguilas Monumental, West Ham transfer chief Rob Newman may have set his sights on a new target as news emerges on midfielder Pedro Aquino.

The Lowdown: Newman eyeing moves?

Since Newman’s appointment at Rush Green, there have been no shortage of links to players who could seriously bolster manager David Moyes’ chances of maintaining the Irons’ excellent start to 2021/22.

Indeed, West Ham are apparently in the mix to sign a plethora of targets in Jesse Lingard, Andrea Belotti and Adam Hlozek, according to Eurosport reporter Dean Jones.

Meanwhile, Football Insider believe that Burnley defender James Tarkowski is very much on the radar of both Newman and Moyes.

In another update, news has come from the South American continent involving a new name.

The Latest: Aquino news emerges…

As per Aguilas Monumental, Peruvian sources note that West Ham and Newman have set their ‘sights’ on Peru international midfielder Aquino.

The Hammers are also ready to ‘present an offer’ for the 26-year-old, whose contract expires in 2023, but the Club America player’s stance will disappoint them.

It is believed that Aquino is focused with the Liga MX Apertura giants and ‘extremely happy’ where he is currently.

The Verdict: What West Ham need?

The 33-cap defensive midfielder, who appeared at the 2018 World Cup for his nation, isn’t exactly what West Ham are crying out for at the moment, so it’s doubtful that many supporters will lose sleep if this link leads to nothing.

Moyes already has the likes of Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek and Alex Kral to protect the back four, whilst Manuel Lanzini in a makeshift role can also reinforce his options in that sector.

After Angelo Ogbonna’s cruel injury blow, not to mention the lack of a backup option for Michail Antonio, we believe that Newman and West Ham should focus all their efforts on signing a new centre-back and a capable striker – maybe even Manchester United ace Lingard (The Evening Standard).
