Aribo ran the show for Rangers at Ibrox

Whilst Rangers enjoyed nearly complete domination over St Mirren at Ibrox on Saturday, the performance of all of Steven Gerrard’s players was extremely professional.

The front three were dangerous, as they have been all season, with Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos and Ianis Hagi all getting on the scoresheet for the Gers.

However, the decision to drop Joe Aribo back into midfield after he played on the right wing against Livingston in midweek proved to be an inspired one by Gerrard, as he completely ran the show at Ibrox.

As per SofaScore, the former Charlton Athletic man earned a solid 7.2 match rating for his display, which wasn’t quite on the level of Kent or Connor Goldson, but he was still an important part of Rangers’ victory.

During his time on the pitch, Aribo would have 125 touches of the ball, the most of any player on the pitch from both sides.

The Nigerian international, who reportedly earns £7,500 per week at Rangers, completed 94 of his 102 passes, resulting in a superb 92% pass accuracy during the game, which is a drastic improvement on the 84.5% pass accuracy he has averaged in the Premiership so far this season.

Whilst he didn’t score or assist, nearly every Rangers attack ran through him, as he was hugely involved throughout, whilst also managing one key pass from midfield. His 125 touches was the most of anyone on the pitch at Ibrox, per SofaScore.

It wasn’t just his attacking play which was impressive, however, as he also won all three of his aerial duels during the 90 minutes, as well as winning two tackles, which emphasises that he was just a class above the St Mirren midfielders at Ibrox.

So far this season, Aribo has averaged a superb 7.44 rating for his performances in the Premiership, having contributed six goals and four assists in 25 appearances – which is enough to see him rated as the second-best performer across the season. per WhoScored.

Therefore, the decision to sign him from Charlton in the summer of 2019 looks to have been a superb piece of business, as he has been vital to Rangers’ success so far this season.

Aston Villa’s Anwar El Ghazi hands Dean Smith a major headache amid Crystal Palace win

With Aston Villa enjoying a superb start to the new Premier League season, there has been no real reason for Dean Smith to start chopping and changing his side.

After all, why fix something that ain’t broke? But with injuries beginning to take their toll amidst a heavy festive schedule, some of the club’s more fringe players have earned a few more opportunities than they normally would have done, and no-one has grasped it better perhaps than Anwar El Ghazi.

The Netherlands international didn’t take to the field for Villa’s first six Premier League games of the campaign, and didn’t even make the match-day squad for half of them.

But with Ross Barkley and Trezeguet being ruled out in recent weeks, a door has opened for El Ghazi to stake his claim for more regular first-team football at Villa Park, and his display on Saturday afternoon delivered a major statement to Dean Smith.

Despite being down to ten-men, Villa raced to a resounding 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace, and El Ghazi was at the heart of everything that was so good about Smith’s side.

The winger was never afraid to try things and take on his full-back, and he was always causing danger for the opposition with his directness and relentless hunt for a goal.

And sometimes that did more harm than good, with El Ghazi racking up a whopping five shots in total just by himself, and when he probably could have tried to pick out a teammate in a better position.

But, his hard work and endeavour were eventually rewarded when he scored a fine goal mid-way into the second-half to make it 3-0 and clinch the game in Villa’s favour – that led to The Birmingham Mail’s Villa correspondent, Ashley Preece, to declare El Ghazi was “on flames”.

In total, as per Sofascore, he lost possession 22 times over the course of the match – by far the most of any Villa player on the day. But that just doesn’t tell the whole story of how the Dutchman continued to take risks to try and find the back of the net.

When Barkley and Trezeguet eventually make their returns back to first-team contention, Smith will have a major decision to make. El Ghazi’s display against Palace has just given him a huge, but welcome, headache.

Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp handed David Alaba transfer blow

Liverpool look to have been handed a huge blow as Pini Zahavi, the agent of reported transfer target David Alaba, has named the four clubs he is keen for the 28-year-old to join this summer, and that list does not include Liverpool.

The Austrian international looks set to leave Bayern Munich on a free transfer this summer when his contract expires, which has reportedly attracted the interest of the Reds.

However, it was revealed earlier this week by Zahavi that the versatile defender, who is valued at £58.5 million, is eyeing a move to either Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG or Chelsea in the summer, which undoubtedly comes as a blow for Jurgen Klopp.

Alaba has been superb for Bayern Munich since switching to centre-back under Hans-Dieter Flick, with his performances in the Bundesliga last season earning him a very solid 6.99 rating, as he helped the German giants win the Bundesliga and the Champions League.

Therefore, it is no surprise that Europe’s elite are targeting the 28-year-old ahead of next season, and he could have been a superb addition to Klopp’s squad, when you consider the injury problems that they have faced this season.

Alaba’s versatility means that he could easily fill in at centre-back alongside the likes of Virgil van Dijk or Joe Gomez, and he is left-footed, which is something the Reds don’t currently have in a central-defender, so he could’ve added a bit more balance to the back four.

He can also play as a left-back and could have been the man to fill in for Andrew Robertson if he was ever injured or rested.

The Austrian also plays in central midfield for his country, so could’ve easily filled in there if required by Klopp.

Pep Guardiola was full of praise for Alaba when he was in charge of Bayern Munich, saying:

“He’s an unbelievable talent. He can play anywhere. He’s quick, is good in the build-up and is always 100 per cent focused. Without doubt, he can be one of the best centre-backs in the world. He’s a huge gift for Bayern.”

Therefore, it is definitely fair to suggest that Liverpool look to have been handed a huge blow by not being included on Zahavi’s list of where Alaba is likely to head this summer, as he is undoubtedly a top player who would prosper in Klopp’s squad.

Newcastle United: Danny Mills reveals Newcastle fears over extended lay-off for Martin Dubravka

Former Manchester City and England defender Danny Mills has suggested that the Magpies could suffer without the presence of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka after details emerged over his injury setback.

It had been reported that Dubravka is facing an extended injury lay-off with his return to action from a heel injury pushed back until at least December, due to the issue not healing correctly after surgery, per The Times.

In Dubravka’s absence, it has been Karl Darlow who has stepped up into the number one position. The former Nottingham Forest keeper has finally been given the chance to impress after spending the last two seasons out of the side, which he is so far taking after pulling off a number of impressive saves.

Darlow has made the most amount of saves in the Premier League so far this term with 28. Against Manchester United, the keeper was forced into action on eight occasions including the save he made to deny Bruno Fernandes’ penalty. That brought his average saves per game so far this term to 5.6 (via Sofascore), which also shows just how many quality chances the Magpies are allowing.

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills suggested that not having Dubravka available will be a major blow for the Magpies over the next few months, clearly believing Darlow’s superb form cannot last.

He said: “He is a big loss for Newcastle. He was magnificent last season. Absolutely superb.

“Over the course of the last 10 years we have seen the rise of the goalkeeper. It is such an important role.

“He has made some vital saves and has been crucial to that team. Dubravka’s a fantastic shot-stopper. He has been probably their best player.

“A good goalkeeper gives the defence confidence and belief and allows them to play with freedom and confidence. That flows all of the way through a team. It is so important to have a good goalkeeper.”

Dubravka absence a major blow if Darlow form dips

Last season it was Dubravka who made the most amount of saves in the Premier League with 140, averaging an impressive 3.7 saves per game (via Sofascore).

Although Darlow has started well this season, there is a concern that he might not be able to sustain such outstanding performances over a whole campaign. The keeper does not have much top-flight experience and therefore he may suffer lapses in form. That would leave the Magpies in big trouble if they continue to allow as many shots on goal as they are doing.

Ancelotti must get ruthless with Everton’s Pickford after latest blunder vs Brighton

Carlo Ancelotti must get ruthless with Jordan Pickford and ditch the ‘arm around the shoulder approach’ following the Everton goalkeeper’s latest blunder against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 26-year-old gifted the Seagulls a welcome equaliser just before half-time in Saturday’s Premier League encounter at Goodison Park, when Pickford unpardonably dropped the ball at Neal Maupay’s feet just yards from his goal line.

Pickford was entirely unchallenged as he attempted to catch Leandro Trossard’s tame strike, that had bounced up off the ground, and was thankful for his teammates’ efforts as Everton swiftly regained the lead through Yerry Mina, before a second-half double from James Rodriguez secured the win.

However, concern must be high on Merseyside heading into the international break as Pickford’s glaring error came as only the latest in a string of blunders that makes the £100,000-per-week shot-stopper the joint-most error-prone player in the Premier League since the start of last season and one who has committed 11 mistakes leading to goals since 2017.

Only Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka has made as many errors (five) as Pickford has since the start of last season’s campaign, with the Toffees’ number one also at fault for both of Fleetwood Town’s goals in last month’s 5-2 Carabao Cup victory with two more howlers.

Pickford was caught out in possession at Highbury for Mark Duffy’s strike and failed to complete the basics when he flapped at the ball following Callum Camps’ effort that was hit straight at him.

Now, Ancelotti must ditch the ‘nicely does it approach’ that managers have previously favoured and get ruthless, with the Italian well-aware that there are no real alternatives to the former Sunderland man currently to hand.

Ancelotti is reportedly set to hold crunch talks with Pickford following his latest blunder, with the Daily Mail understanding that a face-to-face meeting is scheduled once the shot-stopper returns from international duty.

With those talks scheduled after the summer window closes, it suggests th`t Ancelotti has no intentions of dropping Pickford or searching in the transfer market for a new ‘keeper before the window slams shut on Monday evening

Therefore, Ancelotti must get real with Pickford and tear into him for all of his errors, as the 26-year-old does not appear to be learning from his mistakes as they continue to happen time and time again, giving opposing teams greater confidence that they can pile on the pressure. His track record suggests that the £30million signing is likely to wilt under such pressue as he continues to be an occasional disaster.

AND in other news, Everton are planning to part ways with a multi-million-pound signing who scored four times last season.
