Klich tipped to be dropped by Leeds

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan believes that Mateusz Klich could now lose his place in the team following Adam Forshaw’s impressive return.

The Lowdown: Forshaw back in the fold

The 29-year-old has overcome a serious hip injury which saw him miss two years of action, making a hugely pleasing return to the Leeds team recently. The midfielder has six appearances to his name in all competitions this term and seems to be growing by the game, arguably producing a Man of the Match display in the recent 1-1 draw with Leicester City.

Forshaw’s return gives Marcelo Bielsa a selection headache in the middle of the park, with Klich also battling to partner Kalvin Phillips.

The Latest: Pundits tips Klich to lose place

Speaking to Football Insider, Leeds ambassador Whelan admitted that Forshaw’s resurgence could lead to Klich being benched after the international break:

“It was really encouraging to see Forshaw back in that starting line-up. Not least because we didn’t know if we were going to see him in a Leeds shirt again.

“He’s had two horrible years out through injury, and that is tough to come back from for any professional.

“He and Phillips seemed to have a really good understanding in the midfield. He gave us just a bit more presence in there, a bit more aggression.

“That partnership worked better than having Klich in there, it was great to see Forshaw back. He has that experience and composure that we need in that midfield area. Klich could be the one to miss out now.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-24/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Fair decision currently

This is a very healthy situation for Leeds to be in, with central midfield an area which has often felt light on options so far this season, especially with Robin Koch out injured.

Forshaw genuinely feels like a new signing, having missed so much action, and he is showing what an influential figure he can be within Bielsa’s team if he stays fit.

Klich remains a key player for Leeds as well, though, earning their fifth-highest SofaScore performance rating of the season and starting seven top-flight matches, and the added competition from Forshaw could prompt him to raise his game even further in the coming weeks and months.

West Ham fans erupt over Johnson news

Flocking to Twitter, these West Ham United fans have absolutely erupted over news involving their promising young defender Ben Johnson.

The 21-year-old has come on leaps and bounds since manager David Moyes was forced to turn to him in the absence of usual mainstay Vladimir Coufal through injury.

Enjoying solid performances against the likes of Man City, bitter rivals Tottenham and Aston Villa, even scoring in the latter game, Johnson has now been tipped to pen a new deal at the London Stadium as his current contract expires in 2022.

Lauded as a ‘really important player’ by Moyes for his recent showings, you could be forgiven for thinking his call-up to the England Under-21s squad was a given.

Alas, it wasn’t, with the right-back officially missing out on Lee Carsley’s final selection as per West Ham correspondent Tom Clark.

Flocking to this news, these Irons supporters simply can’t quite believe it – with some calling it ‘ridiculous’ and ‘insane’.

Going by his recent form at club level, you can see why West Ham fans are a bit perplexed at this development.

Roupa nova!

Conor Townsend stole the show vs Birmingham

With Valerien Ismael’s West Bromwich Albion side heading into Friday night’s fixture having suffered their first defeat of the season last time out, the Frenchman would have undoubtedly been hoping to get the Baggies’ automatic promotion push back on track with a win in the West Midlands derby against Birmingham City.

While it was by no means the most convincing victory in the world, Albion just about managed to get over the line, with Karlan Grant’s strike 15 minutes from time being enough for Ismael’s side to take all three points, with the 1-0 result sending the Baggies to the top of the Championship table.

However, rather than the match-winning Grant or any of West Brom’s clean sheet-keeping back three, it was Conor Townsend who stole the show against the Blues, with the 28-year-old playing an influential role in Albion’s win from left wing-back.

Lost possession 32 times

Having been deployed on the left-hand side of the West Brom back three in recent weeks, covering for the injured Matt Clarke, the return of the previously stricken centre-back facilitated Towsend’s move back to his more natural position on the pitch.

The £1.8m-rated man did not disappoint, boasting 83 touches of the ball – more than any other player to feature in the match – completing both of his attempted dribbles and having three shots at the Birmingham City goal, as well as making two interceptions and three tackles.

The left wing-back also attempted a whopping 13 crosses and six long balls over his 90 minutes on the pitch, and while only three crosses and one long ball found their intended target, the 28-year-old’s sheer number of attempts demonstrates just how much of a creative influence he was in the match. That was something which ultimately saw him lose possession of the ball 32 times.

While this latter stat can be viewed in a negative light – as, in the black and white of it, the defender gave away the ball more often than any other player on the night – it’s worth taking into account the fact that a player such as Trent Alexander-Arnold has lost possession an average of 23.4 times per game so far this season. Therefore, it can also be used as a barometer for how many risky and defence-splitting passes a player attempts.

This was certainly the case for Townsend against Birmingham, with The Athletic’s West Brom correspondent Steve Madeley stating his belief on Twitter that the £14k-per-week full-back looked “confident on the ball” and was “full of running” in the fixture – as well as claiming that the choice to award the defender the Man of the Match award was the “easiest decision of the night.”

While Townsend’s SofaScore match rating of 6.8 saw him statistically rank as Albion’s joint third-worst player to start against the Blues, in reality, the wing-back’s efforts over the course of the 90 minutes deserve much praise indeed.

Emerson impresses as Spurs finally win

Emerson Royal put in his best performance since joining Tottenham Hotspur this summer as they defeated Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Brazilian right-back was drafted in on deadline day, signing in a €30m (£26m) deal from Barcelona, and finally, the north London outfit caught a glimpse of exactly what he had to offer.

In a game where Heung-min Son excelled with two assists and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg ran the show from the engine room, it was the 22-year-old defender who was an unsung hero for Nuno Santo and his side.

No player recorded more touches of the ball than Emerson (86) as he was a constant threat down that right flank.

Not only was he a rock defensively but he also got up the pitch to contribute in the final third.

As per SofaScore, Emerson recorded a match-high four interceptions, helping thwart the threat of wing-back Matt Target and Danny Ings, who was on his side in Villa’s two-man attack. He also made six clearances, two tackles and won a whopping ten duels.

The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick wrote in his post-match ratings column:

“A promising showing after a tough start in the Premier League. Committed and aggressive defensively and got forward well, creating a big chance for Son at the start of the second half.”

Indeed, the £26m-rated dynamo won three free-kicks, created one key chance and managed to pull off 100% of his dribbles, via SofaScore, further suggesting that he was capable of contributing in the final third.

It was only his third start in the Premier League but for the very first time, Nuno witnessed a player that should be starting there week in, week out. He’s a breath of fresh air in comparison to Serge Aurier, who left the Lilywhites by mutual consent in the summer.

According to football.london’s Alasdair Gold, the Brazil international has impressed staff with his “incredible” fitness levels and we saw some of that during the match today.

The Hotspur faithful were equally impressed by Emerson, too, with many expressing their delight with his performance.

On a day where Spurs ended a run of three straight heavy Premier League defeats, it was the new summer signing that went hugely under-the-radar and deserves plenty of credit for such a showing.

Crystal Palace: Fans blast Milivojevic

Luka Milivojevic came under fire from some Crystal Palace fans for his performance in Monday’s 2-2 draw at Arsenal.

Palace came from behind to lead going into injury time at the Emirates Stadium, with Christian Benteke and Odsonne Edouard finding the net. However, they saw three points slip from their grasp as Alexandre Lacazette fired home deep into stoppage time.

The result left Palace 14th in the Premier League, having won only one of their first eight matches.

Recapping Milivojevic’s night

Milivojevic lined up alongside James McArthur in Patrick Vieira’s 4-2-3-1 system and donned the captain’s armband. The Serbian was making his third consecutive start for the Eagles after missing the start of the season for personal reasons, but it was not a night to remember for the 30-year-old.

Just one of his five attempted crosses found a team-mate, while he also lost possession 11 times (via SofaScore). Vieira opted to take him off after 67 minutes, sending on Cheikhou Kouyate instead.

Here’s what a selection of Palace fans on Twitter had to say about the Serbian’s “awful” display in north London last night, with one describing him as a “poor man’s Jedinak” in reference to the Australian former Eagles midfielder.

Forest fans react to Cooper news

Many Nottingham Forest supporters have reacted to the latest news regarding the next manager at the club following Chris Hughton’s departure.

Hughton left the club this morning after the 2-0 home defeat to Middlesbrough was the club’s sixth defeat in seven in this season’s Championship, leaving the Reds bottom of the table with one point.

The 62-year-old took over at the start of last season and guided Forest to safety with 52 points, but this season has struggled.

Following the departure of Hughton, news has emerged from The Athletic’s Paul Taylor that former Swansea City manager Steve Cooper is on the Forest radar, with his ability to improve young players and track record of leading Swansea to back-to-back playoffs noted.

But with the likes of Chris Wilder, Frank Lampard and Alex Neil available, there has been mixed reaction amongst the Forest fanbase regarding the link with Cooper.

Steven Reid will take temporary charge of the first team, for the time being, starting with Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

These Forest fans have taken to Twitter to react to the news linking Cooper with the vacancy at the City Ground, as one supporter called the latest links ‘dreadful’.

“Another defensive manager, lol, when will we ever learn.”

Credit: @NFFCbaz

“I’d take him in a heartbeat.”

Credit: @ShakeyDay

“No no no. It’s Hughton all over again. Defensive, lacking creativity. Only three teams had fewer shots on goal than Swansea. Really bad posession rate and pass completion rate. If this is the man, I’m sorry to say Forest are blinded again. You get the football you hire.”

“Would be a dreadful appointment and exactly same kind of manager we had for last 4 appointments”

Credit: @12bw1312

“Happy with Cooper, seems like a progressive manager and used to managing on a tight budget.”

“I hope so…but I hope its more than a sticking plaster, over the cracks within the club!”

Celtic: Devlin drops McCann claim

Reliable reporter Kieran Devlin has revealed Celtic didn’t make an enquiry over former St Johnstone man Ali McCann this summer.

The Lowdown: Hoops links, Preston move

McCann was linked with a late switch to Parkhead, however, a £3m asking price for the 21-year-old seemingly put the Hoops off.

The central midfielder was on the move on deadline day, though, joining Championship side Preston North End on a four-year deal.

Reports suggested a £1.2m fee was agreed on between Dominic McKay and the Saints, and it appears as if Celtic were never in for McCann after all.

The Latest: Devlin claim

Devlin, Celtic’s correspondent for The Athletic, shared a story on Wednesday looking at the Hoops’ summer business.

He replied to a subscriber in the comments section who labelled it ‘bizarre’ for Celtic not to move for McCann, with Devlin making a 10-word claim, believing the Hoops and CEO McKay never asked the question.

“Club didn’t enquire about him as far as I know.”

The Verdict: A missed opportunity?

McCann made close to 100 appearances for St Johnstone, and at the age of 21, could have been a shrewd signing by the Hoops for a relatively low fee.

He picked up The Athletic’s SPFL Young Player of the Year Award last season and helped his side win both cup competitions during the 2020/21 campaign.

Celtic have had success in picking up a young Scottish midfielder in David Turnbull, so they may have missed a trick when it comes to McCann, especially with James McCarthy and youngster Liam Shaw being the club’s only additions in that department this summer.

In other news: Another Celtic summer signing, as well as Urhoghide, isn’t impressing under Ange, says Devlin.
