Arran Brindle is set to return to international competition after a five-year hiatus following her inclusion in England’s Women’s 14-player squad for the 2011 NatWest Women’s Quadrangular Series. Sussex wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor has also been named in the squad, which will play in a Twenty20 and ODI series against Australia, New Zealand and India this summer.Brindle, 29, announced an indefinite break from international cricket in June 2006 in order to spend more time with her family. She remained active in club cricket, however, and both she and Taylor impressed selectors with their performances in Pune on a recent training camp with the England Women’s Academy, and during the 2011 Super 4’s competition.”It’s been fantastic to have been involved with the England Academy Programme over the winter and to make the step back up to the full squad so quickly is a dream come true,” said Brindle. “I’ve been playing a high standard of cricket in the Lincolnshire ECB Premier League whilst I have been away from the international game. However, nothing can replace the feeling of pulling on an England shirt and crossing the line for your country, so I look forward to the next challenge of getting into the starting eleven.””The selectors have picked a strong squad for the Quadrangular series,” added ECB Head of Women’s Cricket, Clare Connor. Fast bowler Anya Shrubsole comes back into the squad after a period of conditioning work whilst Arran Brindle returns to international cricket after a substantial period of playing ECB men’s premier league cricket. With Sarah Taylor re-energised after a break in the winter, and Claire Taylor back to full fitness, the top order promises to excite.”Charlotte Edwards will captain England in the quadrangular home series, in which the world’s best four teams play each other in a Twenty20 competition from June 23 to 27, followed by a succession of ODIs. Each competition will culminate in a final and third and fourth play-off match. All England’s Twenty20 matches along with the Twenty20 final will be televised live, while England women will play Australia before England men take on Sri Lanka on June 25 at The County Ground, Gloucestershire.England squad Charlotte Edwards (capt), Jenny Gunn, Arran Brindle, Katherine Brunt, Holly Colvin, Danielle Hazell, Heather Knight, Lydia Greenway, Laura Marsh, Anya Shrubsole, Claire Taylor, Sarah Taylor (wk), Fran Wilson, Danielle Wyatt.

Willoughby and Hussain spark Somerset revival

Charl Willoughby and Gemaal Hussain each took four wickets for Somerset as Hampshire surrendered a position of power

27-Apr-2011
ScorecardJimmy Adams led a strong start for Hampshire•PA PhotosCharl Willoughby and Gemaal Hussain each took four wickets for Somerset as Hampshire surrendered a position of power on the first day of their County Championship Division One clash at the Rose Bowl.Liam Dawson made 91 and the consistent Jimmy Adams scored 74 as Hampshire reached an impressive 199 for 2 without major alarms. Then the ball started to swing and the home side lost their last eight wickets for the addition of just 86. Hampshire were eventually all out for 285 in the 85th over and struggling Somerset confirmed their re-emergence by reaching 40 without loss from nine overs at the close. All this was far removed from the first session which was dominated by Hampshire after their captain Dominic Cork had won the toss in bright sunshine. Adams and Dawson put on 136 for the first wicket before Adams was caught behind off Hussain, the first of five catches for Craig Kieswetter.Johann Myburgh was the wicketkeeper’s second victim, diving in front of first slip at 154 and the rest became a bit of a procession as batting suddenly became a difficult proposition in the breeze. The back of the Hampshire innings was broken by Willoughby who went through the middle order to produce an outstanding spell of four for three in only 18 balls.Willoughby’s left-arm pace accounted for James Vince, Neil McKenzie and then Nic Pothas to the first ball after lunch, with Sean Ervine following to a catch in the covers. Hampshire at that stage had lost four wickets for nine runs. All the while Dawson, in an emergency batting position as opener due to Hampshire’s injury problems, remained steadfast until at 231 he attempted to pull Steve Kirby and got a thin edge to Kieswetter. Dawson’s 91 came off 207 balls and included eight fours and in the context of the day’s play, it was an invaluable contribution.Friedel De Wet (8) went at 261, another victim for Kirby and only some late resistance from Cork made the Hampshire total respectable. Belligerent Cork (44) struck Hussain for five successive fours before the bowler had his revenge in his next over when the former England all-rounder lofted a catch to the cover boundary where Peter Trego held the catch. At the fall of the last wicket, Danny Briggs to Hussain, Hampshire’s slide was complete. Willoughby finished with figures of 4 for 40 and Hussain took 4 for 83.The Somerset openers soon improved on the work of the bowlers. Marcus Trescothick and Arul Suppiah rattled up 40 with six boundaries between them as Somerset ended the first day 245 behind.

Sri Lanka take series with 26-run win

Sri Lanka rested three key bowlers and yet ended up beating West Indies by 26 runs in the third and final one-day international to take the series 2-0

The Bulletin by Sa'adi Thawfeeq06-Feb-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAngelo Mathews hit a quick 36 to help Sri Lanka reach 277•AFPSri Lanka displayed their bowling strength ahead of the 2011 World Cup when they rested three key bowlers and yet ended up beating West Indies by 26 runs in the third and final one-day international to take the series 2-0.Muttiah Muralitharan, Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara were missing from their line-up but their back-up bowling unit comprising Dilhara Fernando, Ajantha Mendis and Thisara Perera did extremely well to defend a total of 277 for 9 by bowling West Indies out for 251 in 49 overs.West Indies got off to a bad start, losing openers Chris Gayle and Adrian Barath for ducks before recovering through a 125-run stand between Darren Bravo, who hit an attractive 79 of 91 balls with nine fours and one six, and Ramnaresh Sarwan, who scored 51 off 66 balls.Once the partnership was broken, West Indies struggled to maintain the required run-rate despite contributions of 32 from Dwayne Bravo and 49 from Carlton Baugh. Sri Lanka’s pace-cum-spin attack came back strongly to make frequent inroads into the batting, with Ajantha Mendis eventually wrapping the innings up with a spell of three wickets for nine runs off 10 balls during the batting Powerplay. He finished with figures of 4 for 46.Sri Lanka, invited to bat first on the same pitch where the first two matches were played, reached 277 for 9 in their 50 overs, with all their top-order batsmen getting into form but none going on to make a three-figure score.Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara’s 75 off 105 balls was the top score with Mahela Jayawardene making the second highest score with 44. The pair added 95 for the third wicket off 114 balls, after openers Upul Tharanga and Tillakaratne Dilshan had given them a rollicking start by posting 54 off 50 balls.Dilshan smashed two fours and a six in his 28-ball 30, before edging a catch behind the wicket attempting to cut a ball too close to his body. Tharanga, who scored a century in the second ODI, helped Sangakkara raise the total to 92 before inside-edging a ball from Sulieman Benn onto his stumps with his score on 30.Sangakkara was given a reprieve at 34 when he lofted Nikita Miller to deep midwicket where Barath made a lot of ground but spilled the catch and the ball crossed the boundary. The miss proved to be costly because Sangakkara took the attack to the bowlers and looked good for a century before he played all over a Benn delivery and was bowled.Sri Lanka failed to make much headway in the batting Powerplay, which they took at 177-2 in the 37th over. They lost the two in-form batsmen: Jayawardene for 44 top-edging a pull and Sangakkara. The departure of the top four batsmen at 205 saw the Sri Lanka run-rate slump. The brittle middle order failed to capitalise on the platform laid by the early batsmen as Sri Lanka lost five wickets for 39 runs. Thilana Samaraweera, Chamara Kapugedera and Perera all went cheaply as Benn worked himself towards his best ODI bowling figures, finishing with four wickets for 38.The innings was given late momentum by Angelo Mathews, who slammed a quick 36 not out off 22 balls to help Sri Lanka cross the 275-run mark.

Ryan Harris' Test chances improve again

Ryan Harris continued to impress ahead of the Ashes by claiming nine wickets for the match, but Ricky Ponting fell for 5

Ryan Harris is in contention for the Ashes after grabbing nine wickets in Hobart•Getty ImagesRyan Harris continued to impress ahead of the Ashes by claiming nine wickets for the match, but Ricky Ponting fell for 5 as Queensland held the upper hand in Hobart. Ponting was an early casualty, playing on to Scott Walter, before Harris added 4 for 68 to his first-innings 5 for 72 in a stunning return. It was Harris’ first Sheffield Shield game back following a disrupted recovery from knee surgery, but he put himself in the frame for the first Test squad, which is named in Sydney on Monday. In a strange move, Cricket Australia has said Harris will be in Sydney on Tuesday for an Ashes function alongside Doug Bollinger, another strong contender for the XI.However, instead of an indication of the Ashes line-up, it might just be a stop-off for Harris on the way to Hobart. At the very least he will be a huge chance to replace Mitchell Starc in Australia A’s side to face England from Wednesday.Starc broke down with a side strain playing for New South Wales on Thursday. Harris has out-bowled all the major contenders for the national outfits but has had the advantage of operating on a Bellerive Oval pitch that has assisted the fast men.Harris’ haul helped knock over Tasmania for 271, leaving Queensland chasing 214 for their opening victory of the competition. After the Bulls’ first innings finished at 254 early in the day, Harris stepped up to have Jon Wells lbw without scoring. Ponting, who scored 32 in the first innings, walked out wanting a long bat, but he was undone on his 17th ball and will have one more Shield game to fine tune before the opening Test.Harris forced an edge from George Bailey (43) and bowled Mark Cosgrove (35), finishing his collection by knocking over Ben Hilfenhaus. Tim Paine followed the opener Ed Cowan’s patient 65 and ensured Tasmania would have something to defend. Paine collected a classy 74 before miscuing to mid-on off the legspinner Cameron Boyce, who finished with 2 for 52 off 21 overs.Queensland’s batting has been a concern this season, but they were helped by rain which meant they only had to face two overs. Wade Townsend and Ryan Broad will resume at 0 for 2 on the final morning.

Everton must sign Worrall this summer

Frank Lampard will need to make many difficult decisions at the end of the season in terms of the Everton squad, despite safety in the Premier League still uncertain it hasn’t stopped transfer interest mounting at Goodison Park ahead of the transfer window.

What’s the word?

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist and transfer insider Dean Jones has named a key role Everton will be looking to recruit for this summer.

Jones revealed: “They obviously need centre backs, and I think they’ll probably sign a very good one in the summer to try and fix their problems.”

A move for Joe Worrall?

If Everton are looking to upgrade their defence this summer with a new centre-back, there’s a good chance that the club will further pursue Nottingham Forest star Joe Worrall.

He has been recently been linked with a move to Goodison Park after scouts were reportedly sent to watch him in the FA Cup this season.

Worrall has been enjoying his football in the Championship with Forest and making a huge impact on improving their chances of promotion to the Premier League six points behind Bournemouth in second and certain for a play-off spot with just three games left to go.

According to SofaScore, the 25-year-old who was dubbed “outstanding” and a “leader” by Steven Gerrard, has been a key player for Forest in his 32 appearances in the league so far with 1.9 interceptions, 1.7 tackles and 3.2 clearances on average per game.

Comedically hailed for being “made out of the same stuff as Wolverine” by Forest journalist Matt Davies, Worrall has also won the majority of his duels combined (62%), proved successful in 81% of his dribbles and kept 13 clean sheets.

The current defenders at Goodison Park have been significantly criticised for their poor performances this season, with Jamie Carragher claiming the current crop were a “Championship back four” after costing Everton on many occasions, and it would come as no surprise if Lampard was to overhaul the defensive line in the team this summer.

Everton will need to focus on their remaining eight games in the Premier League and securing survival from relegation before they make any transfer plans, but signing a player like Worrall would clearly be an upgrade in Lampard’s current squad.

Modi's lawyers want minutes of BCCI meetings

Lalit Modi’s legal counsel has asked the Disciplinary Committee formed by the BCCI to provide him with minutes of meetings of the Special General Body of the Board and the IPL Governing Council

Cricinfo staff24-Jul-2010Lalit Modi’s legal counsel has asked the disciplinary committee formed by the BCCI to hear his case to provide him with minutes of meetings of the special general body of the board and the IPL governing council. The suspended IPL chairman has also asked for a copy of the amended agreement between the board and Sony-MSM, the parent company of the league’s Indian broadcaster.”We have asked for some documents. These are crucial to the proceedings which are already underway as the disciplinary committee and the jurisdiction of the disciplinary committee flows from these documents,” Modi’s lawyer Mehmood Abdi told .”It is essential for us to have access to these documents since the contents we’ve asked will have far-reaching implications for us. BCCI should provide us these documents as the same have implications on the core-issue of recusal, which the disciplinary committee is scheduled to finally decide at its meeting on July 27, 2010 in Delhi.”Modi had filed additional documents to bolster his demand for the removal of interim IPL chairman Chirayu Amin and BCCI vice-president Arun Jaitley from the disciplinary committee that is hearing his case. Modi has repeatedly demanded the removal of Amin from the panel, claiming he holds a grudge because Modi revealed he was part of a failed bid for one of the two new IPL franchises. Modi’s lawyers have also argued Jaitley should not be on the panel either because he had voted to ratify the charges against Modi at the board’s special general body meeting on July 3.”The Board has pleaded before the Bombay High Court that the appointment of the present committee and its charter flows out of the decision taken by the members of the Board in the said meeting,” Modi said. “The jurisdiction of the present committee stems from the said minutes hence it is necessary that these be provided to the applicant.”

West Ham table Ekitike bid

As per le10sport, a West Ham United transfer update has emerged from France as Rob Newman and co table a fresh offer for new striker target Hugo Ekitike.

The Lowdown: West Ham in striker search…

Manager David Moyes, as things stand, is still on the search for a new striking addition over one year after club record signing Sebastien Haller departed for Ajax.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

A plethora of forwards have been linked since then, including sensational names like Brazil international Gabriel Barbosa and Lille sensation Jonathan David.

Alas, despite the reports, West Ham still haven’t sealed an alternative to Michail Antonio but that hasn’t stopped them from trying – with the Irons and Newman now tabling an offer for another new target.

The Latest: West Ham table Ekitike bid…

As per le10sport, West Ham have ‘just transmitted an offer’ of around €15 million (£12.5m) to sign Reims striker Ekitike – with the Irons and Newman even willing to loan him back to the Ligue 1 side for six months.

This bid, they claim, is the only one they have received for Ekitike despite reports of a possible €35m (£29.1m) offer from Newcastle United for the forward.

The report add that the 19-year-old is ‘very popular’ in England as he becomes a man in demand – with the Irons, Newcastle and Watford all interested.

The Verdict: Real prospect…

The teenage talent, scoring eight goals and assisting three others in 18 top flight starts this season (Transfermarkt), is in a really rich vein of form at such a young age – leaving little wonder why he is attracting major English interest.

90min reporter and transfer insider Graeme Bailey is certainly a big admirer, branding Ekitike an ‘outstanding’ forward whilst even claiming he ‘could be the next Mbappe’ (Twitter).

As Moyes and co scour France for some of the nation’s top talent, as backed by insider ExWHUemployee, they couldn’t do much better than Reims’ sensation as a real prospect to watch out for.

With any luck, West Ham and Newman can win the race in January.

Celtic closing in on permanent Jota deal

Celtic are close to turning Jota’s loan move into a permanent transfer, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Jota back in Portugal

Ange Postecoglou has reaped the rewards after the club brought the winger to Parkhead over the summer on an initial loan deal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Jota has scored eight times and registered six assists in just 18 games, but he missed the last seven fixtures prior to the winter break with a hamstring injury.

He has since returned to parent club Benfica to assess his recovery, but it appears as if the Hoops are making the most of the 22-year-old’s time on the sidelines and are closing in on a permanent swoop.

The Latest: Source shares Jota update

Football Insider shared a pundit piece on Saturday, shortly before Celtic announced the signing of Johnny Kenny, with Paddy Kenny reacting to the possibility of Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers joining on a full-time basis.

Within their report, the site was informed by a Celtic source on Saturday that the Hoops are now close to signing Jota following talks with Benfica during the week.

The Verdict: Massive

The option-to-buy fee reportedly stands at £6.5m, so on top of a possible £6m for Carter-Vickers, Celtic could be making a serious investment. However, considering how influential Jota has been for the Hoops, a deal for that amount could actually turn out to be a bargain in the long run.

He is currently valued at £4.95m by Transfermarkt, so should he continue to perform as he has done so far in Scotland, you’d expect that it’s just a matter of time until his market value hits eight figures.

Celtic have shown in the past with Odsonne Edouard that a big-money addition can work following a successful loan when it comes to making an impact and a profit, so hopefully it will be the same with Jota.
