The rematch of the 2012 final is likely to devolve into West Indies’ batsmen v Sri Lanka’s bowlers and if that is the case, Angelo Mathews and his team would sorely miss the injured Lasith Malinga

Jayawardene: West Indies have match-winners

Match factsSunday, March 20, 2016
Start time 1930 local (1400 GMT)Big PictureSri Lanka have been happy to fly under the radar. As a matter of fact, they are the defending champions, but they cling to the underdog tag like it’s a life vest. Just as well, because they are heading straight into a storm.Chris Gayle is in his home town – A cosy little realm of flat pitches, short boundaries and spoilt fans called Bangalore. Gayle loves it here – he hit 175 at the M Chinnaswamy and has it emblazoned on his RCB jersey – and the fans love him right back. Of course, that does not mean they will stop expecting him to hit another 175.So do Sri Lanka have a sufficiently skilled kill joy among them? Nuwan Kulasekara has the wiles. Angelo Mathews can certainly annoy. Rangana Herath has to have a magic wand stowed somewhere on his person. But there is a name missing from that list. A man who can remove the 22 yards from the equation, match the West Indian gunslingers’ for firepower. What’s more, he had done it all before too. Lasith Malinga was part of a Mumbai Indians line-up which forced Gayle to plod on for 10 off 24 balls in a chase of 210 in April 2015. He won’t be part of the Sri Lanka team tomorrow, a proper blow considering the rematch of the 2012 final is likely to devolve into West Indies’ batsmen v Sri Lanka’s bowlers.Form guideWest Indies WWLLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Sri Lanka WLLLWWatch out forMarlon Samuels is one of eight men still standing from West Indies’ title triumph in 2012. And it was his innings that refused Sri Lanka the joy of becoming world champions at home. A man capable of taking your breath away with his strokeplay and tear your hair out when he is out of form, Samuels continues to be an enigma 15 years since his debut.Dinesh Chandimal is remaking himself as a T20 opener. Some of that is because most reckon he can slip into Mahela Jayawardene’s shoes. While that can be a heavy burden, Chandimal can turn it to his advantage. Presently he tries to hit the ball a bit too hard. For a batsman whose skill lies in timing and imagination, he does not need to rely on such crude tactics. Jayawardene certainly did not.Team newsIndications from West Indies’ training session on the eve of the match are that they would keep to the same XI that played England. They might be tempted to find a way to include Jason Holder, who had come out as an opener during the warm-up stage.West Indies (probable) 1.Chris Gayle, 2 Johnson Charles, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Dinesh Ramdin (wk), 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Darren Sammy, 8 Carlos Brathwaite, 9 Samuel Badree, 10 Jerome Taylor, Sulieman Benn.Sri Lanka do have plenty of bowling options, and that is bound to come useful. They may retain the same XI that beat Afghanistan last Thursday.Sri Lanka (probable) 1.Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 3 Lahiru Thirimanne, 4 Milinda Siriwardana, 5 Angelo Mathews (capt), 6 Thisara Perera, 7 Chamara Kapugedera, 8 Shehan Jayasuriya, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Dushmantha Chameera, 11 Rangana Herath.Pitch and conditionsDharamsala and Nagpur have been slow on the take. Mumbai has been in the batsmen’s pockets, and if history is anything to go by, Bangalore will be too. There was a tinge of green to the pitch at M Chinnaswamy stadium, but it is unlikely to hinder strokeplay. If anything, it might help the ball come onto the bat quicker. Chasing has been the favoured route here, even without the complication of dew. The forecast is for a clear day, but a cloudy night.Stats and trivia Chris Gayle averages 54.37 and and strikes at 168.84 at the M Chinnaswamy stadium. He has three hundreds, eight fifties, 115 fours and 132 sixes. Nuwan Kulasekara is Sri Lanka’s third highest wicket-taker in T20Is – but his tally of 56 is well short of Malinga’s 78Quotes”It’s a plus for us. Chris has played, I think five IPL seasons here in Bangalore. I played here last year. We have a lot of knowledge of the conditions here in India”
“Very often when you have this kind of tournament, the defending champions have that burden of defending the title. The high expectations of media and fans does create extra pressure. In quite a nice kind of way, quite a lot of that is not present at the moment. With a younger group it’s quite nice not to have that pressure.”

Warne confirms booking baseball venues for all-star T20s

Shane Warne has confirmed that he has booked famous baseball grounds in the USA as venues for a series of exhibition T20 matches that will feature retired international players

The kinks in Warne’s plans

Former Australia legspinner Shane Warne has confirmed that he has booked three of the most famous baseball grounds in the United States of America as venues for a series of exhibition T20 matches that will feature retired international players.Warne said that Wrigley Field in Chicago, the Yankee Stadium in New York and the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles had been booked as venues for games likely to be held in November. The series in the USA is part of a league planned by Warne and Sachin Tendulkar that aims to hold exhibition matches around the world over a three-and-a-half-year period. The idea, reportedly, is to take matches to places where fans are starved of good quality cricket, and Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong and UAE are also being looked at as venues.”At this stage we’ve booked three stadiums, Wrigley Field, Yankee Stadium and Dodger Stadium,” Warne told . “We’re going to have Bollywood-theme nights and it’s all shaping up pretty well.”All three baseball venues have also hosted other sporting events, including American football, soccer and ice hockey, and each stadium can host more than 40,000 spectators. Wrigley Field is the home of the Chicago Cubs baseball team, while the Yankee Stadium and the Dodger Stadium are home venues for the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers. The exhibition cricket matches are likely to be scheduled after the end of the 2015 Major League Baseball season in October.Warne said he and Tendulkar had come up with the idea for promoting the game, inspired by the exhibition basketball team, the Harlem Globetrotters.”Myself and Sachin had an idea – why not take cricket to America and be the Harlem Globetrotters, go around and do free exhibitions at schools … help grow the game of cricket (in a country where there are already) 45 teams in LA?” Warne said.According to Warne, 28 players, including Glenn McGrath, Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, Adam Gilchrist, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Brian Lara and Wasim Akram, have signed on for the series. He also said the organisers were in talks with the ICC and the USA Cricket Association for their involvement and support.”We’ve signed around 28 players who have all said, ‘If you and Sachin are doing it, we’d like to do it as well’,” Warne said. “We’ve got all the players you’d want to see from the past 20 years. Part of the all-stars idea is we go around and the people who haven’t had the opportunity to see these guys play over the years because they’re based in the States can come.”We’ve met with the ICC who are very happy to be on board with us so we just want them to be official partners with us. We’re speaking with the American Cricket Association to make sure they can help us as well.”

– A questão do Ramires é tê-lo 100%.

Ludeman's record fifty stuns Stars

A brutal fifty from Tim Ludeman, the fastest in BBL history off only 18 balls, provided an explosive start to a chase of 148 and laid the platform for a comfortable victory for Adelaide Strikers

Freddie Wilde18-Dec-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsTim Ludeman carved out the fastest fifty in the Big Bash League, off only 18 balls•Getty ImagesThe Adelaide Oval hosted 27,425 people – a record for the opening match of a Big Bash League season – and they watched the Adelaide Strikers complete their first ever win over the Melbourne Stars, thrashing them by eight wickets.A brutal fifty from the Strikers’ wicketkeeper and opening batsman Tim Ludeman, the fastest in BBL history off only 18 balls, provided an explosive start to a chase of 148 and laid the platform for a comfortable victory for the home side. He was unbeaten on 92 off 44 balls when the game ended in the 13th over.A fifty of a very different nature from BBL-debutant Kevin Pietersen appeared to haul the Stars to a competitive total, but such thoughts were dashed by Ludeman’s power. The Stars, who elected to bat on a good pitch, lost their captain Cameron White for 6 in the fifth over. Although that was the only wicket to fall, they could only score 67 runs in the first 10 overs as a result of some good bowling and irregular shuffling of the attack. Luke Wright, who struck a four off his first ball, struggled to accelerate but his 37-ball 45 laid a platform for the Stars and also elevated him above Shaun Marsh to become the third-highest BBL run-scorer.The Stars briefly threatened in the 11th over when Pietersen, batting at three, wearing a helmet camera and miked up to the commentary box, hooked consecutive sixes off Kieron Pollard. Pietersen’s 66 of 44 balls was characterised by grit and evoked sharp memories of 10 years of international brilliance. However, wickets fell at regular intervals in the back 10 overs as the Stars spluttered their way towards 150.Glenn Maxwell, batting at four, was unfortunate to be given out caught behind. The ball had deflected off his pad as he attempted a switch-hit, but the Strikers deserve credit for some excellent bowling and tight fielding. Legspinner Adam Zampa, in particular, was impressive conceding just 21 from his four overs and taking one wicket. It could have been even better for the Strikers with three economical overs – two from their captain Johan Botha and one from Kane Richardson – left unused. However, the couple of overs from part-timer Craig Simmons, bowling for the first time in T20 cricket, appeared to surprise the Stars and upset their rhythm. They managed only two double-digit overs and two double-figure scores between them – Wright and Pietersen – as their innings fizzled to a close. The Strikers slammed 23 and 20 off the third and fourth overs to get ahead of what could have been a tricky chase. Ludeman and his opening partner Simmons, thrashed 85 off the Powerplay, the highest in BBL history, blitzing eight fours and six sixes before the end of the sixth over.Simmons fell just before the end of the Powerplay for a 15-ball 30, caught well by Wright off the bowling off John Hastings, but the damage had been done. Ludeman continued his onslaught even as the fielders dropped back and the required rate dropped below four by the end of the ninth over. Travis Head came, saw, hit and went, before Ludeman’s clean and fearless striking saw the Strikers to victory with eight wickets in hand and 7.3 overs to spare.

Bowlers meeting expectations of nation – Misbah

Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan captain, credited his side’s bowlers following their 248-run victory against New Zealand in the first Test in Abu Dhabi

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Nov-2014Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan captain, credited his side’s bowlers following their 248-run victory against New Zealand in the first Test in Abu Dhabi. The victory was Pakistan’s third successive one in the UAE and came soon after they had thumped Australia 2-0.The most experienced bowler in Pakistan’s line-up was Mohammad Hafeez, and the most experienced specialist bowler was Rahat Ali, who was playing his ninth Test. Misbah said it was commendable that a largely inexperienced attack had thrived on surfaces where more experienced bowlers had struggled.”The kind of conditions we are getting, the world-class bowlers are struggling but these youngsters are living up to the expectations of the team, me and the whole nation,” Misbah said. “They are getting 20 wickets every match. So that’s a really big achievement for them.”You can’t say these are spinning tracks and that’s why we are getting wickets. The fast bowlers are really chipping in and they are doing a wonderful job. These are the same pitches where the top-class bowlers are struggling.”Misbah praised left-arm fast bowler Rahat Ali, who finished with a six-wicket haul in the game. Rahat’s 4 for 22 in the first innings was vital to keeping New Zealand to 262 and came after he had taken only four wickets in the series against Australia. The win made Misbah Pakistan’s most successful Test captain and he said he was honoured to be in the company of legendary cricketers like Imran Khan and Javed Miandad.”It sounds great, because you could say the names – Imran Khan, Javed Miandad those are the greats of Pakistan. But if I am at the top, it’s something I could not really think of,” Misbah said. “It’s great to know that. I am happy about that.”Despite the huge margin of victory, Misbah refused to call it an easy win and said he was mostly happy because the team had not squandered momentum from the 2-0 series win against Australia.”I think overall nothing is easy but it looked easy at the end. But you could say the team really played well, every individual held on to his responsibility and we stuck to our basics. We performed really well, like we performed against Australia, so we just kept that momentum and those performances intact. That was the key for us – that at the end, it looked easy. But nothing is easy in life and especially in cricket.”

Middlebrook holds up Lancashire

James Middlebrook’s stubborn unbeaten 78 fended off a three-day defeat as Northamptonshire reached 145 for 5 in the second innings of their Championship clash with Lancashire

Press Association29-Apr-2014
ScorecardJames Middlebrook kept Northamptonshire in the game with an unbeaten half-century•Getty ImagesJames Middlebrook’s stubborn unbeaten 78 fended off a three-day defeat as Northamptonshire reached 145 for 5 in the second innings of their Championship clash with Lancashire. The 36-year-old’s second half-century of the Division One campaign stopped Northamptonshire slipping to their second-straight defeat on Tuesday.Middlebrook faced 175 balls in three hours and 17 minutes at the crease, leaving Northamptonshire requiring 95 runs for victory when play resumes on Wednesday. The under-fire hosts could find themselves hard-pressed to fend off Lancashire on the final day’s play, however, especially with England quick James Anderson once again in fine form. Anderson claimed 5 for 48 in Northamptonshire’s first innings of 164, and continued in similar vein, returning figures of 3 for 32 from 15 overs on day three.Ben Duckett’s unbeaten 24, to add to his first innings 35, helped Middlebrook rescue Northamptonshire’s situation, with the duo reaching a partnership of 68 by the close. One more breakthrough for Lancashire, however, and Northamptonshire could quickly see their faint victory hopes dashed. After resuming on 66 overnight, with Lancashire 244 for 5, Jos Buttler could only survive two-and-a-half overs, falling to an lbw decision to Azharullah for 72. Olly Stone then claimed four quick wickets to clean up Lancashire’s tail, returning his best first-class figures of 4 for 65 from 20.2 overs.Tom Smith turned his 44 into a half-century before departing on 54, Stone claiming his first victim with Steven Crook taking the catch. Captain-coach Glen Chapple reached 10 before Stone struck again, this time with Middlebrook to thank for the safe hands. Stone then clean bowled Kabir Ali for 2 and Simon Kerrigan for 8, steaming through the Lancashire tail for his four wickets. The visitors’ second-innings total of 284 left Northamptonshire chasing 240 for victory, no mean feat given their first-innings of 164 and Lancashire’s initial 119, and England seamer Anderson was quickly back into the groove to put Northamptonshire under pressure.Anderson cleaned out Stephen Peters’ stumps, the Northamptonshire opener departing for 9 with his side 10 for 1. Middlebrook and Kyle Coetzer steadied proceedings before the latter was clean bowled by Ali for 19 from 34 balls.Matthew Spriegel produced a stubborn seven runs from 51 balls, but his resistance came to an end when Chapple had him caught by Andrea Agathangelou. Rob Newton departed for a duck with Northampton reduced to 77 for 4, Anderson striking again and Paul Horton taking the catch. Just two balls and no further score later, Anderson dislodged Andrew Hall, Ashwell Prince this time holding the catch. At 77 for 5 from less than 30 overs, Northamptonshire were facing a defeat swift and bleak in equal measure. Duckett joined Middlebrook in a defiant stand, however, and Northampton were able to reach stumps with some fight still remaining in this contest.
