MCC changes prompt Graeme Fowler to step down

Graeme Fowler, the former England batsman, has stepped down from his position as head coach at Durham MCCU – a role in which he has helped forge the career of six England players including Andrew Strauss – as a result of changes introduced by the MCC.Fowler, 58, who played 21 Tests and 26 ODIs for England, founded the centre of excellence scheme at Durham University in September 1996. It proved so successful that the ECB soon set up five more centres in other university towns or cities based on his model. It was recently calculated that just over 22% of England-qualified players currently in the county game had come through one of the schemes, with Durham providing 60 county players, six county captains, six England players including two women and Strauss, the newly appointed director of England cricket who played 100 Tests for his country – 50 as captain. But Fowler is concerned that changes demanded by the MCC – the funders of the scheme – will compromise its effectiveness and has made the decision to stand down after 19 years in the role.”Recently the MCC have proposed changes to the direction of the centres away from being purely about excellence into a more broad base which includes more emphasis on a community based programme,” Fowler said in a statement released by Durham University, who officially employed him.”Taking into account the evolution of the role of senior cricket coach, I have decided to step down after 19 years in post. This has been a very hard decision to reach.”While the MCC admitted they are not providing any more money in return for the increased expectations they have for the schemes – they currently provide £92,000 to each of the six centres – they insist there is no threat to the production of first-class players.”There is no change in our intention to produce excellent first-class cricketers,” an MCC spokesman told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s more that we want to enhance the scheme.”We want each of the six centres to become community hubs in line with our intention to increase participation figures, so we are looking for the MCC University players to volunteer for coaching sessions and we want to offer more opportunities for women cricketers.”We don’t see it as changing the scheme so much as bolstering it. We appreciate the colossal contribution Graeme has made over many years and we are sorry to see him leave.”While the MCCU scheme receives no direct funding from the ECB, its impact on domestic cricket over the last few years has been enormous. By allowing talented young players to continue their education while also pursuing their dream of playing professional cricket, it has prevented a situation where they have necessarily felt the need to choose between the two and means that players gain the qualifications and skills required for a life beyond cricket. It thereby helps avoid some of the pitfalls that a previous generation of county players all too often suffered and helps players graduate into county teams with a little more maturity and life experience. As Strauss put it: “It was at Durham University that I went through the transition of being a recreational cricketer to one who had the ambition to play the game for a living.”After announcing the news, Fowler’s Twitter timeline was quickly filled with warm tributes from players – including Andrew Flintoff, Tim Murtagh, Luke Sutton, Lee Daggett, Michael Brown, Will Smith and Warren Hegg – thanking him for the huge contribution his advice and coaching had made on their careers and their lives off the field.Flintoff’s were typical. “You’ve finally graduated from Durham Uni!” he wrote in a series of messages. “You must be so proud of your time at Durham. Great to see all the messages of thanks from people you’ve helped over the years.”Possibly the roughest I’ve ever been on a cricket field after a night at your house.”

Warrican took over now, removing the next four batsmen in quick time as Leewards crumbled to 111 for 9. Gavin Tonge clubbed 33 off 21 to make sure an innings defeat was avoided. Warrican had him stumped to end on 5 for 50.

Further accolades for Lyth and Lees

Adam Lyth added the Professional Cricketers’ Association player of the year award to his collection of trophies from the 2014 season with team-mate Alex Lees named young player of the year.A day earlier, Lyth, 27, was honoured by the Cricket Writers’ Club as their Championship player of the season after scoring 1489 runs at 67.68 in Yorkshire’s first title success since 2001. He was the leading first-class runscorer in the country and has been called up for the England Performance Programme’s trip to Sri Lanka.”It’s a very proud moment to be voted for by your peers who you’ve played against all year,” Lyth said of the PCA accolade at the annual PCA awards at Old Billingsgate in London. “It’s been a fantastic season for both Yorkshire and me and I’ll never forget the feeling on that Friday when we took the final wicket against Notts at Trent Bridge to clinch the title.”Lees, 21, ensured a Yorkshire double of the top awards, voted for by county cricketers. His opening partnership with Lyth was a cornerstone of the White Rose success. Lees was also similarly crowned by the Cricket Writers’ Club.”To join such a long list of illustrious players is very humbling,” Lees said. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed batting with Adam and we’ve thrived on each other’s successes. But we couldn’t have played how we did without the support of our bowling attack and the rest of the team.”Angus Porter, chief executive of the players’ union, added: “Many congratulations to Adam and Alex. The list of past winners bears testament to the fact that the people best placed to judge outstanding performances are fellow professionals.”The team of the year featured Lyth and three other Yorkshiremen, Joe Root, Gary Ballance and Jack Brooks, who led the county’s attack with 68 wickets at 28.02 – the third-best haul in the country. Kent’s Darren Stevens, who was also named NatWest T20 Blast player of the year, was included, along with Jeetan Patel, who was the most successful spinner in the country and played a key part in Warwickshire reaching both one-day finals.Full awards

SL inflict crushing innings and 248-run defeat

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDilruwan Perera took a five-wicket haul in only his second Test•AFP

Sri Lanka recorded their second biggest ever Test win by an innings, wrapping up the first Test an hour after lunch on the fourth day with Bangladesh still 248 runs short of making the visitors bat again. An innings deficit of 498 was demoralising enough for Bangladesh to capitulate without a fight, and there was no stoic resistance from them to take the game to the fifth day, let alone save the game. Sri Lanka’s seamers began the slide before the middle order succumbed to the offspin of Dilruwan Perera, who took a five-wicket haul in only his second Test.Sri Lanka had batted themselves into position from which they would certainly not have to pad up again. The same pitch that produced 730 runs in a single innings was made to look like a seamer’s paradise when Sri Lanka took the ball, causing the Bangladesh batsmen to hop and weave even on a fourth-day surface. In the end, Sri Lanka narrowly missed recording their biggest innings win, that of 254 runs against Zimbabwe 10 years ago.The wickets in the morning were attributed more to good bowling from the visitors, and the aggressive approach from the hosts always gave the bowlers a sniff. The only cheer for Bangladesh was a brisk fifty by Mominul Haque, but it did little to wrest the initiative from Sri Lanka. The overcast conditions were ripe for seam bowling and Sri Lanka prised out two wickets with the short ball. Shaminda Eranga’s snorter off the second ball of the morning was too good for Shamsur Rehman who failed to pick the ball from the gloom and gloved it to the wicketkeeper. Marshall Ayub was impressive with his defense before he too was found wanting with his technique against the bouncer. Suranga Lakmal bowled round the wicket with a leg gully and short leg waiting and Ayub failed to fend it off, lobbing the ball to Kaushal Silva at short leg.Bangladesh were firmly pegged on the back foot but the situation didn’t deter Shakib Al Hasan and Mominul from going for their strokes. The seamers persisted with the short stuff and both left-handers were compulsive with the pull, though not all shots were in control. Mominul wasn’t afraid to slash over the slips and point and Shakib too didn’t restrain himself. The introduction of spin, via Perera, sunk the hosts further. Shortly after Shakib brought up the fifty stand with a cover-driven boundary, he played back to Perera and was trapped lbw to one that went through with the arm. Mominul brought up his half-century, off just 52 balls before he too fell lbw to Perera, playing back. There was a semblance of doubt with the verdict, however, as replays indicated that the ball may have been sliding down the leg side.Mushfiqur’s wicket was probably the biggest blow, for he has shown on many occasions that he can occupy the crease, a quality many of his teammates have failed to show consistently. In the last over before lunch, he was beaten by flight going for the drive and bowled through the gate.Nasir Hossain was the only specialist batsman remaining but he too succumbed to a poor stroke, skying the ball to mid-off, giving Perera his fourth wicket. The two Hossains – Rubel and Al-Amin – gave the crowd something to cheer with a blazing last-wicket stand of 53 in just 6.2 overs, but it wasn’t enough to hide the embarrassment of their fourth-biggest innings defeat, that too at home.Bangladesh have an extra day to ponder over the loss and rethink their combination for the Chittagong Test which begins on February 4. They picked three seamers on a pitch in Mirpur that had more bounce than a typical Bangladesh surface, but as Sri Lanka proved, in order to exploit it to the fullest you needed bowlers with extra yards of pace like Eranga and Lakmal. With the series at stake, Bangladesh could revert to a more spin-heavy attack and prove that their progress in 2013 was no fluke.

Fields shines but Test is drawn

Having been in danger of following-on two days ago, England were content to settle for two points for a draw in the Ashes Test after declining to make an attempt at a target of 249 in 45 overs at Wormsley.Australia declared their second innings on 231 for 5, with Jodie Fields unbeaten on 78, but there was no dip at the chase as England finished on 93 for 2 when the players shook hands. There was the incentive of six points for victory in this Test – with the Ashes decided across all three formats for the first time – but both teams leave all-square after four days although Australia have the advantage of currently holding the Ashes.”I think today we came here with a goal of winning the match and we knew we had to make a positive declaration,” Fields said. “Probably the early wickets set us back a little bit and we had to stabilise again. I think we gave it a good crack. We got the 250 and then put them in, we tried our best.”There was just a suggestion that England might be able to leave themselves a more favourable chase when they claimed quick wickets during the morning session. Having resumed on 64 for 1, Australia slipped to 108 for 4 – a lead of 125 – before Fields steadied the innings.Charlotte Edwards, the England captain, said: “We came in believing we could still win the game and I think that showed in our first session. We believed we could get early wickets and put some pressure on them but it wasn’t to be and I think a draw is a fair result. Both teams really wanted those six points and there was huge incentive to get them.”Our bowlers have been outstanding throughout this Test match and restricted Australia well. I’ve been really impressed with our opening attack and Heather Knight played a brilliant first innings to get us back in the game.”Meg Lanning and first-innings century-maker Sarah Elliott fell in consecutive overs before, 32 runs later, Jenny Gunn claimed her second wicket to end a lively innings by Jess Cameron. However, Fields and Alex Blackwell calmed Australia with a stand of 42 before Fields added an unbroken 81 with Erin Osborne to set up the declaration. Fields hit 13 boundaries in her innings, then left England with a chase that would have been achievable in one-day cricket but was well clear of the previous scoring rates of this match.Heather Knight, who rescued England with a mammoth 157 in the first innings, was run out for the second time in the match and Arran Brindle was caught and bowled by Elliott to leave England 48 for 2. Further alarms were avoided, though, as Sarah Taylor and Edwards played out the remainder of the day.The teams will now prepare for a three-match one-day series which begins at Lord’s on August 20, where there are two points on offer for a win, which will be followed by three Twenty20s with the same rewards on offer.
