Lynn McConnell23-Apr-2002New Zealand women’s cricket hopefuls will have their last chance to impress for a place in the team to tour the Netherlands, Ireland and England in June and July when a training camp will be held at the High Performance Centre at Lincoln University, starting on Anzac Day.Eighteen players have been asked to take part in the four-day camp but four will miss out when the touring team is named on May 1.The squad is: Nicola Browne (Northern Districts), Anna Corbin (Wellington), Ingrid Cronin-Knight (Auckland), Emily Drumm (Auckland), Maria Fahey (Canterbury), Paula Flannery (Canterbury), Fiona Fraser (Canterbury), Frances King (Wellington), Michelle Lynch (Auckland), Sara McGlashan (Central Districts), Aimee Mason (Central Districts), Louise Milliken (Northern Districts), Nicola Payne (Canterbury), Kate Pulford (Central Districts), Rachel Pullar (Otago), Kathryn Ramel (Auckland), Rebecca Rolls (Auckland), Haidee Tiffen (Canterbury). The tour is an important step for New Zealand who missed good grooming time when their tour of India was cancelled last November. That tour was seen as an important bridge between the side that won the CricInfo Women’s World Cup in 2000 and the side to defend the title in South Africa in 2005.Healthy competition for the final places in the squad is expected. The TelstraClear White Ferns will play their first match in Europe, against the Netherlands on June 25.They will then play two more matches against the Netherlands, followed by three against Ireland before competing in a tri-series in England against India and England. All the matches on tour are One-Day Internationals.”This is a fantastic opportunity, particularly for those players who haven’t toured before, to experience the demands of international touring,” selection convener Lesley Murdoch said.”It’s a fairly hectic schedule and the players will have to be prepared mentally and physically for an intense month of cricket where they are required to play three or four matches every week.”The most important matches on the tour will be those in the tri-series with England looking to show improvement under the former coach of the Australians, John Harmer, and India looking to show they had learned the lessons of Lincoln 2000.”The Netherlands and Ireland are both developing nations in terms of women’s international cricket, but neither can be taken lightly as both will have home crowd support and conditions in their favour,” Murdoch said.”The Indian and England teams are both strong and we will have to be at our best if we are to achieve our ultimate objective of winning the tri-series in England.”The itinerary is:In the Netherlands: June 25 (Tuesday): 1st ODI v the Netherlands at Utrecht (venue tbc); June 26 (Wednesday): 2nd ODI v the Netherlands at Utrecht (venue tbc); June 28 (Friday): 3rd ODI v the Netherlands at Utrecht (venue tbc).In Ireland: July 1 (Monday): 1st ODI v Ireland at Clontarf, Dublin; July 3 (Wednesday): 2nd ODI v Ireland at Malahide, Dublin; July 6 (Saturday): 3rd ODI v Ireland at Dublin (venue tbc).In England: July 11 (Thursday): Tri-Series ODI v India at Grainville Cricket Club, Jersey; July 12 (Friday) Tri-Series ODI v England at Grainville Cricket Club, Jersey; July 16 (Tuesday): Tri-Series ODI v England at Racecourse Cricket Ground, Durham; July 17 (Wednesday): Tri-Series ODI v India at Racecourse Cricket Ground, Durham; July 20 (Saturday): Tri-Series Final at Racecourse Cricket Ground, Durham.

Marcus Bent drops big claim if Everton re-sign Ademola Lookman

Marcus Bent has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that there would be a huge weight of expectation on Ademola Lookman’s shoulders were Everton to re-sign him this summer.

Having come through the ranks at Charlton, the 23-year-old has gone down a different career path to many young English players at his age.

He left Charlton to join Everton, and despite scoring on his debut against Manchester City, never managed to establish himself as a regular at Goodison Park and left for Leipzig permanently two years ago following a successful loan spell.

But Lookman’s struggles resurfaced during his first year in Germany, forcing him to move back to the Premier League last summer – making a return to London with Fulham.

And despite their immediate relegation back to the Championship, Lookman showed his capabilities in the Premier League by scoring four times and adding four assists in 34 appearances.

Bent has previously suggested that a quick winger is on Everton’s shopping list this summer, but told The Transfer Tavern that Lookman would be expected to perform following his fine form for Fulham:

“He did well for Fulham, the problem being is that if he goes to Everton, he’s going to be expected to come in and do well.

“Obviously for Fulham in the Premier League, now they’ve gone down, yes, they’re going to look at him, but he’d have to hit the ground running.”

Saints fans react to Armstrong news

Southampton fans have been reacting to the news that they are leading the race to sign Adam Armstrong from Blackburn Rovers this summer.

The Saints are preparing for the upcoming 2021/22 season after what was a mixed previous campaign – they finished 15th in the Premier League table but did also reach an F.A Cup semi-final. As they look to improve, they are likely to be looking to bring in new players, and it seems they may be targetting a new striker.

According to The Telegraph, the Saints are leading the race for Armstrong, who currently plays for Blackburn in the Championship. Last term, he enjoyed a fantastic campaign, scoring 29 goals in all competitions (Transfermarkt), and this latest report has suggested he will be moving to a club in the Premier League during this transfer window.

The Sport Relief Kwik Cricket Tournament 2002 and a Pay to Play cricket weekend are among the exciting events being organised by ECB in support of Sport Relief.A joint Comic Relief and BBC concept, Sport Relief is aimed at uniting theworld of sport to raise money for vulnerable children and young people, both in the UK and across the world. The campaign will culminate in a entertaining night on Saturday 13 July on BBC1 featuring sport, celebrities, entertainment, and fundraising – hosted by BBC cricket presenter Jamie Theakston alongside Gary Lineker, Ulrika Jonsson and Clare Balding.Alongside the Football Association, the Lawn Tennis Association, the RugbyFootball Union and other sports bodies, the ECB hope to raise considerable funds for the Sport Relief pot.One of the big ideas across several sports is Pay to Play, with sports men and women at every level being encouraged to pay to play their own sport.Cricketers all over the country – from England captains Nasser Hussain andClare Connor and the rest of national squads to local village players – will be asked to ‘pay to play’ the game on a nominated weekend during the summer. This is looking like being the weekend of 15/16 June, but has still to be confirmed. As a grassroots initiative the involvement of children is key to the campaign, and the Sport Relief Kwik Cricket Tournament 2002 will provide the younger cricketers with their chance to drive the funds total in the right direction.Fundraising takes place during the second round of the competition when theKwik Cricketers taking part can be sponsored for every run their team scores. This could be as simple as walking to work to snowboarding. The campaign is not only targeted at sport enthusiasts but also people in offices, who could organise their own sports days, stage an office Olympics or simply ‘pay to play’ to do anything active. All schools will be mailed with a Sport Relief schools pack and video, supported by Sport England, that will show how schools can fundraise, forexample by adding a fundraising dimension to their existing sports days.Children and young people around the world will benefit from every penny raised through Sport Relief. Crystal Palace: Andros Townsend linked with switch to Besiktas

Andros Townsend is reportedly subject of interest from Turkish champions Besiktas, according to Sport Witness.

The Lowdown

Predictably, the Besiktas interest in the 29-year-old England international is enhanced by his favourable contractual situation. His deal is due to expire at the tail end of this month, meaning the former Tottenham man is now free to talk to other clubs [Transfermarkt].

Signing from Newcastle United in 2016 [Crystal Palace FC], he has gone on to rack up 185 appearances for the Eagles notching 16 goals and 28 assists [Transfermarkt].

   The Latest

Intriguingly, this potential pursuit may hinge on whether Besiktas succeed or fail to secure Rachid Ghezzal from Leicester City. Following a successful loan spell at the club, Besiktas are said to be keen to secure his services permanently [Leicester Mercury].

Should this deal fall through, the European powerhouses could make their move for Townsend.

Open to a move away, Townsend has spoken this year in an interview with talkSPORT breakfast about one particular offer he has received from abroad, admitting he had spoken to a club from ‘around’ Turkey.

Verdict: Losing Townsend would be a blow to Crystal Palace

Losing players is never easy and Townsend is no different in that regard – even if he has not been a consistent feature in the team at times this season, his experience and quality is an asset to behold for any dressing room.

Once labelled a ‘flying winger’ by previous manager Roy Hodgson, he has provided plenty entertaining moments for the Palace supporters – perhaps most notably the stunning strike at Manchester City in 2018.

Despite this, his departure could pave the way for some younger talent to break through the ranks in South-East London. Having recently parted company with Hodgson, it may be time for large-scale replenishment encompassing all departments of the football club.

Journalist drops Spurs claim involving Sarri

According to Italian journalist Fabio Santini, speaking to Il Prosecco as relayed by Area Napoli and translated by Sport Witness, former Premier League boss Maurizio Sarri ‘could go to train in the Premier League with Tottenham’.

This big claim comes amid other reports that the favourites to succeed former boss Jose Mourinho on a permanent basis appear to be the likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Brendan Rodgers.

Spurs touted as possible move for Sarri

Other reports have even mentioned Graham Potter and Scott Parker as outside managerial candidates over Sarri, so it seems to be a complete free-for-all when it comes to predicting Mourinho’s permanent successor.

Recently, other claims coming out of the continent suggested that Levy had approached the ex-Chelsea gaffer, but reporters close to the club have since come out to deny those reports (Evening Standard).

Now, another Italian reporter has claimed Sarri is indeed a candidate – citing his sources as proof.

“I have two news about Napoli,” he told Il Processo, via Area Napoli and Sport Witness.

“I’m starting from the bad one: Maurizio Sarri, much loved by the fans, will not land in Campania.

“According to my information, the coach from Figline Valdarno could go to train in the Premier League at Tottenham.”

Transfer Tavern take

A winner in both Italy and England, winning the Europa League with Chelsea and the Scudetto with Juventus, he has absolutely no shortage of credentials.

He was famed for his brand of attacking play, dubbed ‘Sarri ball’, and he has also been described as ‘extraordinary’ by Chelsea midfielder Jorginho (Football Italia).

However, given he was at the Chelsea helm, he could be a controversial appointment for Spurs supporters.

Nagelsmann, on the other hand, plays a similar style of football and has been lavished with praise by both the media and his players for his ‘fearless’ approach to management.

For this reason, we believe the German boss should be targeted above all others, even if Sarri is an intriguing candidate.
