Manchester City: Fans baffled by potential transfer exchange involving Joao Cancelo

Plenty of Manchester City fans have reacted with bewilderment to a transfer report from Italy which involves Joao Cancelo.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the Portugal defender is part of a reported three-pronged transfer exchange between City, Inter and Barcelona which would see him moving to Serie A, Lautaro Martinez joining the La Liga side and Nelson Semedo coming to the Etihad Stadium. News of the complex transfer arrangement was shared by @City_Xtra on Twitter.

Cancelo only came to England last summer as part of an exchange deal which saw ex-Manchester City defender Danilo take his place at Juventus but the 25-year-old has started only eight Premier League games this season, with Pep Guardiola often preferring to start with Kyle Walker at right-back.

Spanish media outlet Sport had claimed [via Sport Witness] that Guardiola has been eyeing up a possible move for Semedo, who has featured in 29 games for Barcelona in the current campaign.

These Manchester City fans on Twitter seemed rather baffled and mystified upon reading the transfer report from Corriere dello Sport:

Man City fans, should the club give Cancelo more of a chance and would he be preferable to Semedo? Have your say by commenting below!

Aston Villa: Fans react to James Chester’s potential summer exit

Aston Villa fans have reacted to recent comments made by defender James Chester, who is due to leave the club on a free transfer this summer.

Chester who was part of Villa’s play-off winning side last season, struggled to gain sufficient playing time with the Midlands based club during the first six months of the current season.

Playing a bit part role at Villa Park in the Premier League, the centre-back was sent out on a six month loan deal to Championship side Stoke City.

He has now spoken about his situation at the club, claiming he hasn’t really discussed anything with them regarding his current contract which is set to expire on 30th June (The Athletic via @villareport).

Featuring for Villa on 126 occasions, it seems the Welsh international has left a good impression on the club’s fans judging by the reactions to his comments, and he is likely to gain interest from a number of sides this summer.

Dean Smith’s side currently sit 19th in the Premier League as things stand, potentially looking at a drop down to the Championship if results do not improve when football returns from the recent pandemic.

Reacting to Chester’s latest comments on his future, Villa fans responded via Twitter account @villareport. It seems that the majority would actually like him to stay at the club, despite having become a forgotten man in recent times…

Spurs fans divided over Juan Foyth future

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been left embroiled in debate on social media this week after footage emerged of Juan Foyth.

The Argentine centre-back, originally signed by Mauricio Pochettino in 2017, could be available for transfer in the summer if reports are to be believed.

According to the Mirror, Foyth has been offered to clubs and is expected to leave Spurs at the end of the season with Barcelona keen on signing him.

His agent has even stoked the fire by hinting towards an exit in an interview with talkSPORT. When asked if his client had a future under Jose Mourinho, he said: “For what has happened in recent times, we don’t think so.”

Foyth has played just three times since the former Manchester United and Chelsa boss took the reigns in November, but many in north London believe selling him would be a massive mistake.

One fan believed that a loan spell would be the best solution for all parties and that the club should “definitely not sell” him whilst another claimed that Foyth was better than some of the more experienced players in the squad.

The 22-year-old has managed just 32 appearances during his three years in north London.

An overwhelming majority of supporters on social media have suggested that the Argentina international is tested out in defensive midfield, which is a position that Mourinho is supposedly chasing this summer.

Spurs only really have Eric Dier in the position, though it is believed his future is seen at centre-back, thus the role needs to be strengthened. Should Mourinho look from within? These fans certainly think so…

Some of the reasoning included Foyth’s ball-playing ability and his work rate whilst one member of the Spurs faithful lauded him as a “great young talent”.

Across WhoScored’s recorded matches for Spurs, Argentina and former club Estudiantes, the young centre-back has averaged 2.9 clearances, 2.4 tackles and a passing success rate of 85.3%, so the aforementioned fans may be onto something.

However, not everyone agreed with a few supporters believing that he should be used from the bench only, which would be no change from his current predicament at the club, really.

Others went a step further and lambasted Foyth, suggesting that he should be sold ahead of next season.

There were even a few comparisons made to other players. One sees shades of Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich in him whilst another believes he needs to put on muscle to become Eric Dier-esque.

For now, though, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Foyth. He is evidently a figure that divides opinion amongst the Tottenham fanbase.

Newcastle fans react to Matty Longstaff’s call-up to England U20s squad

Newcastle picked up their form in October and Matty Longstaff’s contribution has earned him his first call-up to the England U20s squad.

He struck the winning goal on his debut against Manchester United and has impressed with his performances, so is deserving of inclusion.

Some fans are delighted to see the youngster recognised in such a way, and have issued congratulatory messages of their own, with one particularly impressed by his achievement.

Longstaff is only 20 years of age but he has now averaged the highest number of passes per game in the Newcastle squad, with 40.

The midfielder has spoken of his desire to play as much as he can, stating that is his full focus rather than swapping shirts at the end of matches and picking up memorabilia – an attitude which should serve him well at club and international level.

Here are some of the messages from supporters following the announcement.

Leeds fans don’t like what Liam Cooper said about Patrick Bamford

Leeds United fans on Twitter have been reacting to Liam Cooper’s comments on Patrick Bamford.

The Leeds captain was full of praise for the striker despite the fact that he hasn’t scored in any of his last nine games for the club.

The Scotland international stated that Bamford’s pressing high up the pitch are key to everything Leeds United do, and while that’s a fair thing to say, fans are finding it hard to get on board with that sentiment.

The striker’s lack of goals is clearly a point of concern for the fanbase, and why wouldn’t it be? Leeds missed out on promotion by the narrowest of margins last term, and the fact that their striker is misfiring this term could cost them again.

Cooper believes that Bamford’s fortunes will change in the near future, but it remains to be seen whether or not the former Boro striker can rekindle the type of form that saw him net four in five at the start of 2019/20.

Manchester City fans still hate VAR despite ruling in their favour

Manchester City were finally on the right side of a VAR decision on Saturday.

The reigning champions have previously had bad luck when it comes to the video assistant referee as they’ve famously had two winning goals chalked off against Tottenham in both the Premier League and and the Champions League.

However, on Saturday their fortunes changed as the VAR check actually ruled in their favour after their second goal was checked for an offside call.

Despite the fact that the goal was given – and that City went on to win 3-0 in yet another dominant performance – a number of supporters still weren’t happy, perhaps because the check caused a significant delay in the game.

VAR is still in its infancy, and of course, there are issues that need to be ironed out, but with the amount of times Man City games have been affected by it, it’s no wonder that fans only have negative things to say.

West Ham fans react to the news of Robert Snodgrass’ retirement

Robert Snodgrass has announced his retirement from international football and it has provoked a mixed response from Hammers fans.

The 32-year-old had an injury-affected international career which limited him to just 28 appearances for his country, despite making his debut in 2011.

He has said the time is right for him to make way for younger talent, but that has led one West Ham fan to suggest he know longer wants to play football, and that he is happy to sit on the bench at the London Stadium.

Not everyone has been so harsh, however, with some using the opportunity to show appreciation for the winger, who can now focus all his attention on trying to get back into Manuel Pellegrini’s team.

Snodgrass has started just three times so far this campaign and will need to improve a lot on his last showing, achieving a SofaScore rating of 6.4 for his Scotland display in their 4-0 defeat to Russia.

Here is how some supporters have reacted to the news of his retirement.

Liverpool’s James Milner is praised by Jurgen Klopp for his consistent performances

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Jurgen Klopp has praised James Milner for acting as a role model to the young players in the squad against MK Dons.

What did he say?

There is a lot riding on this season for Milner as his contract is expiring at the end of the season, and despite facing criticism for his display against Napoli he seems to be an important member of the squad for his manager.

At Stadium MK he filled in at left-back and once again slotted in with ease, supporting the young Curtis Jones ahead of him whilst contributing to the 2-0 win with a goal and assist.

Klopp was very impressed with what he offered, not just for his individual performance but the way he led by example, offering guidance to the several young players on the pitch and displaying the standard they will have to meet on a regular basis.

In his post-match press conference the German said, as reported by LiverpoolFC.com: “This man is on fire, that’s how it is. It helps a lot.

“He’s a real role model for young players. If he could play every day, Millie [James Milner] would be like this every day, that’s how it is. Absolutely brilliant.”

Setting the standard

Milner played a huge role last night, not only in earning his side the win but by showing the young players the level of performance and commitment they will have to bring to each game they play.

His level of consistency has been impressive ever since he joined the Reds, whether playing at left-back or midfield, and despite him growing older he still appears to be as important to Klopp as ever.

That means it is likely his contract will be renewed at some point, and rightly so.

It is true that he might not compare to his midfield teammates in terms of the number of passes he makes or how often he beats an opponent with the ball, but to lose a figure like him from the dressing room, with all his experience, would likely be a significant blow.

With youngsters appearing to come through it is important Liverpool retain the leadership qualities they have in players like Milner, as that can prove vital in their development, and over the course of a title race.

Barcelona would get a great replacement for Ivan Rakitic in Fabian Ruiz

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Even though the transfer market won’t be open for business until January, the big clubs are still hard at work and looking ahead to the next window. According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona will be heavily scouting Napoli’s 23-year-old ace, Fabian Ruiz, with an intent to possibly scoop him up next summer.

This would indeed be a good move but one that could very easily indicate Ivan Rakitic’s time in Catalonia is truly coming to an end.

What’s the word, then?

The notion that Rakitic could leave Barcelona is hardly news at this point. The last we’ve heard about it, however, was in the Italian press when they claimed Juventus will look to secure his services as early as January. The titans from Turin apparently tried to land him in the summer as well but with no success.

But if Ruiz really is one of Barcelona’s targets, that can only mean one thing: Rakitic is surely heading out the exit door.

It’s highly unlikely that Barca would bring in a new midfielder to an already overcrowded area without selling at least one player. And looking at Ruiz as Rakitic’s possible replacement, he does seem like a perfect player to join the squad.

Third time is the charm

Mundo Deportivo also claim that this is not the first time Barcelona have been connected to the 23-year-old midfielder. In fact, they could’ve had him two times before but opted out of the deal on both occasions, with interest first manifesting in 2017. The Catalan outlet also emphasises that this time around they would be happy to get him for a fee under €60m (£53.7m).

But the quality is certainly there. Last season, Ruiz scored five goals and assisted three in a total of 27 games in Serie A, which is something Rakitic also often does as one of the highest-scoring midfielders at Barcelona. Last season, he bagged three goals and five assists in La Liga so the output is quite similar, to say the least.

And Ruiz does a lot more than just score and assist, too. Last season he averaged 89.8% passing accuracy and 2.3 key passes per game in Serie A and he’s set to continue the trend into the new campaign with 91.2% passing accuracy and two key passes on average already under his belt, per Whoscored. His defensive work should also not be disregarded, as he averaged 2 tackles per Serie A game last season.

The final two boxes he ticks are versatility and youth. Ruiz has been known to operate in a conventional midfield position, in a more advanced number ten role, and in a wide left-sided role.

And at just 23 years old, he is bound to continue improving in Catalonia.

On paper, this indeed sounds like a great deal for Barcelona and they shouldn’t miss out on this player for the third time.
