Man Utd star Scott McTominay leaves Scotland fans fuming with Russia display

[ad_pod ]

One of Manchester United’s flag-bearers for the current youth revolution Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is trying to implement, Scott McTominay has really established himself as a key member of the first-team squad at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a break-through year under Jose Mourinho in the 2017/2018 campaign, registering 27 appearances across all competitions for the club.

Under Solskjaer, things have been no different, with McTominay playing in every single one of United’s opening four Premier League games this season.

The midfielder has already made ten appearances at international level for Scotland, but his last outing for the side on Friday night certainly won’t go down as one of the better ones.

Steve Clarke’s men slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Russia, and Scotland fans took to Twitter to criticise McTominay’s role in the game.

Many supporters questioned how the 22-year-old had managed to “hoodwink” everyone into becoming a starter for both United and Scotland.

Some fans even compared McTominay and ex-Red Devil Darren Fletcher, and insisted the former shares a similar quality of not really offering anything.

Leeds fans produce cheeky response to centenary season ticket gift box

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Leeds United fans on Twitter have produced a predictable response to a centenary season ticket presentation pack that supporters are starting to receive in the post.

Images have appeared on the social media platform of the gift box, which includes a bottle opener and a scarf among other items.

While it is clearly a lovely touch from the Yorkshire outfit, it is clear to see that some of the Elland Road faithful are still feeling frustrated at their lack of summer transfer business – an ongoing theme in recent weeks.

While Ben White and Helder Costa have arrived – with Jack Clarke and Jack Harrison returning to LS11 on loan – Pontus Jansson has left for £5.5m and there appears to be a shortage of depth in both the centre-back and the centre-forward positions as they look to make up for last season’s play-off disappointment.

Owner Andrea Radrizzani hasn’t exactly spent much money either, with White and Costa arriving on season-long loan deals, and the club not having to pay £15m for the latter until next summer.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

Many supporters produced something of a cheeky response on seeing the season ticket pack, with one asking if “that’s where the Pontus money went?”

Here is just a selection of the rest of the Twitter reaction…

Johnson urges West Ham to sign Costa this summer

[ad_pod ]This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…Glen Johnson has urged West Ham United to sign Diego Costa this summer, per talkSPORT.

What’s he said?

The Hammers have been left with just two senior strikers after the departures of Marko Arnautovic, Lucas Perez and Andy Carroll throughout the transfer window.

And Costa has been heavily linked with a potential return to the Premier League, with EvertonÂcredited with an interest.

The Spain international, of course, spent three years at Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles and scoring a total of 58 goals in 120 appearances for the club.

And Johnson, who came through the ranks at the Hammers before a 2003 move to Chelsea, believes the Irons should swoop as they look to bolster Manuel Pellegrini’s squad.

He said: “I could see it happening at West Ham. I could see someone like that.

“Obviously, the club have shown over the years that if they want someone, they’ll go and get them and they could pay Diego the wages that, no doubt, he’ll demand. And I reckon he’d thrive being a big fish in a smaller pond. I’d love to see him back, I’d love to see him play for West Ham.â€

Asked if the club could merely be swapping one controversial striker for another after Arnautovic’s departure, he added: “Of course, if Arnie’s gone, I would’ve swapped the pair of them over anyway. I’d rather Diego in my team than Arnie, all day long.”

Nailed it

Costa would be the perfect striker signing for West Ham this summer.

This is a player with proven Premier League experience and, while he will turn 31 in October, he has all the skills required to be a hit in east London.

Costa is a physical striker, a nuisance for defenders and he has a hammer of a right foot.

West Ham have already tasted defeat in their pursuit of Celta Vigo forward Maxi Gomez.

But the signing of Costa could be the ideal acquisition for the Irons this summer.

Leeds shouldn’t waste Jack Clarke windfall on loan fees

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

With Jack Clarke looking like finally making his long-awaited move to Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United may well start spending this summer.

The Whites are apparently set to receive an initial £8.5m for the 18-year-old, but more than £1m of that could be going to Manchester City as the Championship side look to loan Jack Harrison again.

What’s the story?

According to Football Insider, the Yorkshire club have made a loan offer for the winger that includes a fee of over £1m. It is unknown what the exact figure is or how much of Harrison’s reported £51,000-a-week wages Leeds would be paying.

The wide man spent last season out on loan at Elland Road, and it has been widely reported that Marcelo Bielsa is keen on bringing him back for 2019/20.

Can’t waste Clarke fee

Leeds may be getting less than they wanted for their teenage sensation, but they can’t afford to waste a single penny of it.

The Yorkshire side have previously been unable to splash the cash due to their reported sell before they buy policy, but they would be foolish to use this money on loan fees as this report suggests.

Spending over £1m on loaning Harrison for a season would be an example of wastefulness – after all, the 22-year-old wasn’t that good last season. Four goals and three assists in 2018/19 shows that he didn’t have that great of an impact at Elland Road during his first temporary spell.

Bringing Harrison back may not be a bad move, but parting ways with over £1m for a season of his services doesn’t show good value for money.

Leeds have been linked with plenty of loans this summer, but if they’re all going to cost these types of fees it would indicate bad business.

Spending their Clarke windfall on loan fees and wages for those players is a very risky move. If they don’t go up in 2020 then they will be back to square one with less money and without one of their brightest young talents.

Manchester United: Sean Longstaff might provide a brighter future

There seems to be plenty of activity currently among the Manchester United midfielders. Obviously, Paul Pogba has been extensively linked with a move away after publically admitting he’d like a new challenge and, additionally, Ander Herrera is to leave after his contract comes to a close. So, perhaps it’s fair to say that United fans are in need of some good news, and it may arrive in the shape of Sean Longstaff.

According to The Mirror, United are closing in on a potential £25m signing for the Newcastle midfielder. They report that United are looking to build for the future, buying young and exciting prospects, rather than established household names. This is certainly reflected in their recent acquisition of Daniel James in a £15m deal from Swansea, as well as the reported interest in both Mattijs de Ligt and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Longstaff was particularly impressive last season, starting in eleven fixtures in a row before damaging ligaments in his knee that effectively ended his season. The 21-year-old made nine Premier League appearances in total, scoring one goal. Despite a clear lack of experience, The Mirror report that Solskjaer liked what he saw during that limited game time.

The boyhood Newcastle fan has, in the club’s in-house TV channel, admitted he is flattered to be linked with such moves, but has pledged 100% commitment to the club. Yet, according to the Evening Standard, they believe a fee of £25m should be enough to entice both the club and the player.

Big money signing Fred has certainly not, as of yet anyway, produced anywhere close to the standard initially expected. With Herrera’s departure, alongside Juan Mata also possibly on his way out, the United midfield is starting to look paper thin.

However, with the acquisition of Longstaff, they would have a player who would give their all, genuinely comfortable on the ball and is a far better passer than given credit for. In fact, Newcastle were one of the only teams to inflict defeats on champions Manchester City last season. Subsequently to the game, Guardiola expressed that they simply couldn’t cope with Newcastle’s holding midfielders – quite the compliment for the young Englishman.

Due to his lack of experience, there isn’t a huge amount of data to go off in regards to Longstaff but Louise Taylor of the Guardian did compare him to another Geordie to have starred at the Theatre of Dreams in Michael Carrick, so it’s clear there is an element of potential here.

There’s a reason United are willing to pay £25m for a player with just nine Premier League games under the belt and it’s not hard to see why.

United fans, what do you think about the prospect of Sean Longstaff joining United this summer? Is he a good player for the future? Or would he get into the current team? Comment below.

Aston Villa fans would love to add James Tavernier to Premier League squad this summer

[ad_pod ]

Rangers captain James Tavernier is a target for Aston Villa in the upcoming summer transfer window, according to The Daily Mail.

The paper reckon that the Villans are one of the clubs weighing up making a bid for the player after an impressive season in the Scottish Premiership.

Working under manager Steven Gerrard, Tavernier has proven to be a creative, attacking full-back, registering a hugely impressive 20 assists in all competitions.

Check out what the Pl>ymaker FC squad got up to at the Football Blogging Awards in the video below…

With 17 goals to his name last term also, albeit as the team’s designated penalty taker, the 27-year-old has been one of the most effective talents north of the border over the last 12 months.

Having found success in the transfer of John McGinn, who was another stand-out in Scotland, it’s clear there could be some value in raiding the country’s biggest teams in Villa’s efforts to bolster their Premier League squad.

Villa supporters certainly seem keen on the transfer, taking to Twitter to share their thoughts over the weekend…

Pereira leaving Leicester for Barcelona would be disastrous

[ad_pod ]

According to Spanish outlet AS, Ricardo Pereira is on Barcelona’s wish list as they eye up a new right-back.

What’s the word?

Pereira has quickly established himself as one of the best right-backs in the Premier League, showing impressive strides since switching Porto for Leicester.

However, after just a season in England he could be on the move.

Mundo Deportivo have reported that current Barcelona full-back Nelson Semedo avoided journalists in the mixed zone following Portugal’s win over Switzerland at the Nations League. That came just a day after the same publication claimed he wanted to leave.

With that in mind, the Catalan club have now drawn up a list of potential replacements.

Among those names, according to AS, is Leicester’s Pereira. The report doesn’t specify how much he is likely to leave for, but Transfermarkt rate the player at £18m.

Disaster on the cards for Leicester

After Brendan Rodgers said he wanted to keep his squad intact over the summer this piece of news will be particularly worrying for fans of the Foxes.

He isn’t the first full-back to be linked with La Liga, though, after Ben Chilwell was the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid.

Both of them were excellent over the course of the 2018/19 season but there was arguably no player more important to Leicester than Pereira.

The 25-year-old had a stunning campaign, being named the club’s Player of the Season and also Players’ Player of the Season.

It was fine reward for a term where he claimed six assists, proving to be a valuable asset down the right hand side.

Was Gareth Southgate wrong to overlook potential England stars from Palace, Leicester and Saints? Fan discuss “big club bias” in the video below…

After seeing Danny Simpson released, Leicester now only have one right back in the squad. Daniel Amartey has been utilised in that position in the past but he doesn’t come close to Pereira’s quality.

As a result, losing someone with the attributes he possesses would be nothing short of a disaster. Considering the transfer window has only just opened, it would be the worst possible way to open proceedings.

He’s a player you sense would be incredibly difficult to replace and considering Leicester’s £85m valuation of Harry Maguire, it hardly seems as though they’re strapped for cash.

In that case, allowing him to leave isn’t in their best interests.

Where would Man City targets Bruno Fernandes, Rodri and Joao Felix fit in?

[ad_pod ]

So, the transfer window is almost upon us, and Manchester City seem to be making headway on a number of targets already.

It has been reported that the reigning Premier League champions, who are well on course to secure a domestic treble, are poised to sign Atletico Madrid holding midfielder Rodri, along with Sporting Lisbon’s record-breaking attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

Once deals for those two are tied up, Pep Guardiola is also hoping to secure Benfica prodigy Joao Felix, who he sees as the heir to 33-year-old David Silva’s throne.

You may be asking yourself: “Where will all these talented players fit in amongst the current crop of world beaters?”

Are Man City better than Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’? Fans discuss in the video below…

If so, that is a fair question. If not, why aren’t you?

Rodri is seen as a replacement for Fernandinho, who has just turned 34, so his place in the team doesn’t need much explanation.

However, with the likes of Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva, David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne already at Guardiola’s disposal in the attacking midfield department, how could City squeeze Felix and Fernandes into their embarrassment of riches?

The potential lineup sees Benjamin Mendy and Kyle Walker as pushed on full-backs, the system that Guardiola prefers, and the centre-backs also split wide to receive passes from Ederson – in this system, Fernandinho drops between the pair, almost as a quarterback, something that the Spanish international Rodri will be expected to do.

The 22-year-old has been likened to a young Sergio Busquets; that should tell you all you need to know about what kind of player he is.

Further up the field, Felix – who can play anywhere behind the striker, but plays at No.10 for Benfica – could take on a left attacking-midfield role, where his strong right foot and preference to cut inside would cause huge danger for the opposition.

Alongside him, Fernandes, who is comfortable on either foot, will play more as a box-to-box No.8, helping assist Rodri before carrying the ball forward – he will also play close to Bernardo Silva, whose industry and ability would make the life of any player on his team easier.

Where does De Bruyne fit in, you ask? He will almost certainly start ahead of either Fernandes or Felix should they arrive, but the Belgian’s serious injury problems this season seem to have caused some concern about his ability to play consistently – David Silva also cannot be depended on to step up anymore as his powers are waning.

At left-forward and centre-forward respectively, Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero will effectively go about their business as we know they can – the pair have 37 Premier League goals between them this season.

If Guardiola manages to get the heavily-linked trio to put pen to paper on a contract with the club, the Citizens’ dominance in England could become unparalleled to anything we’ve ever seen before.

West Ham: The Samir Nasri project just isn’t working

Manuel Pellegrini just can’t catch a break.

The West Ham manager’s been plagued with injuries in recent months, impacting his ability to deploy a consistently winning side for the Hammers. That’s been a huge frustration for you Irons, we’re sure, never knowing who or how well the team are going to play.

Indeed, the latest victim to injury problems is January signing Samir Nasri, who’s recurring calf problems stopped him coming on against Chelsea (quotes sourced by the Evening Standard).

What a waste of time he’s looking like.

Since coming back to London, the 31-year-old’s had some really hot & cold moments. Despite making to headlines with a terrific performance against former side Arsenal – where he assisted the winner – he’s since failed to pick up from that performance.

In fact, Nasri’s failed to finish 90 minutes even once, mostly due to his lack of fitness and doesn’t look overly reliable, which was probably the main fear supporters had when he was signed in the first place.

The Hammers surely knew the risk they were taking in signing the injury-prone Frenchman in January, a deal reported by the Sun at the time to be worth around £80k a week. While his two crucial assists have proven the gamble worth taking, his fitness issue is a concern which means this alliance shouldn’t go any further.

Mostly reduced to substitute roles, he’s not as energetic, influential nor creative as he’s reputed to be. Even as a substitute, Nasri’s been frustrating apart from two bright games and doesn’t really deserve a spot ahead of some other talented West Ham players.

Pellegrini might be fond of the menacing Frenchman, but it’s time to face reality. Nasri is well past his best. West Ham would be making a foolish move in rewarding his inconsistent spell with another contract and should look to move him on after May.
