Are this Arsenal star’s smoking habits stunting his growth?

Smoking is medically proven to stunt your growth – something Jack Wilshere should bear in mind, after a picture of him holding a shisha pipe was posted on Instagram last week.

There’s not a lot the Arsenal starlet can do about his slender 5 foot 8 frame at 23 years of age, barring limb transplant surgery with Peter Crouch. His development as a footballer however, has continually stifled since first exploding onto the Premier League scene as a teenager – we’re still waiting for him to mature into the world-class central midfielder he’s often heralded to become – so maybe it’s time to invest in some nicorette.

Wilshere’s professionalism, attitude to training or rehabilitation from injury has never come into question, but his recent smoking incident, now the third photograph to reach the public of him submitting to the unhealthy habit, is enough to add to the myth of a player not taking things too seriously – hanging out in trendy nightclubs to watch the Superbowl, Shisha pipes and gorgeous blondes en masse, rather than sitting at home with his leg up, waiting for his recently-operated-upon ankle to heal.

Perhaps most detrimental of all, it highlights the limits his career has reached thus far, in comparison to what was expected of him upon his first full campaign in the Arsenal first team aged just 19. Indeed, Wilshere was billed as a talent worthy of Barcelona’s legendary midfield, the future of the England national team and his generation’s answer to Paul Gascoigne.

We’re still waiting for any of those prophecies to prove remotely accurate, and instead of glowing endorsements of the midfielder in Premier League match reports, the only column inches he’s filled recently revolve around boozy nights out and his lust for Mayfairs.

[ad_pod id=’ffc-video-small’ align=’left’]

Of course, his injury problems cannot be overlooked; the Three Lions star is now enduring his ninth long-term sideline bout in the space of just six seasons. Whether that’s a consequence of misfortune, Arsenal’s ever-scrutinised training methods or simply his limited physicality isn’t a debate to be had right now – but even the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi would struggle to improve their games during such disruptive periods of prolonged absence.

That being said, the disparity of talent between Wilshere and Arsenal’s other midfielders is becoming increasingly noticeable. Compared to the indisputable world-class qualities of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, or the impact Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla have had over the last 18 months, the England midfielder is lagging some way behind.

He’s enjoyed stellar displays for both club and country and moments of divine aesthetic quality, such as his supporting role in that unforgettable goal against Norwich last season, yet they pepper a career of ordinary performances that barely exceed the norm, despite the hype continually surrounding the midfielder.

During his seven Premier League outings this term for example, he’s averaged less than one created chance per match, 0.8; an inexcusable return for a player who represented Arsenal’s youth squad predominantly as a No.10. Averages of 0.8 tackles and 0.3 interceptions per match are equally troubling, as is a pass completion rate of just 83%.

Those trademark central runs at opposition defences remain Wilshere’s defining gift as a footballer, commanding great technical talent and even greater self confidence, but the rest of his game hasn’t spanned particularly further; the England international’s showing no holistic improvement in output, defensive discipline or understanding of his particular role – although that seems to change far too frequently for him to ever successfully comprehend.

A few years ago, this wasn’t a big deal – Wilshere had his whole career ahead of him to iron out the creases and find his consistency. But now 23, crocked at the ankle and croaking on fags, time to realise his fullest potential is quickly escaping him, like tobacco smoke drifting and disappearing into the night sky.

In essence, his smoking habits aren’t the issue – although Arsene Wenger has warned Wilshere to improve his lifestyle. He won’t be the first or the last footballer to enjoy smoking; Wilshere’s mistake, once again, was getting caught doing it.

Rather, it’s the manner in which these stories are beginning to say more about his career than the actual football, highlighting how, by in large, the England midfielder is still at the same level he was five or six years ago. He might be lighting up Mayfairs and shisha bongs, but Wilshere hasn’t lit up the Emirates pitch since he was a teenager.

Just why aren’t The Premier League top clubs interested in signing him?

Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder has continued to dither over signing a deal that would take him to Turkish giants Galatasaray in the hope that a Premier League club will join the race for his signature late on, and while Liverpool have become the latest to be linked with the Netherlands international, the lack of movement from over here has been telling. But just why are so many top flight clubs reluctant to take on the talented playmaker?

The 28-year-old is currently involved in a nasty contractual wrangle with his club, with the crux of the issue being that the Italian outfit want him to approximately take a 30% pay cut on his €6 million-a-year after tax annual salary, currently the highest at both Inter and in the entire Serie A. The club are prepared to honour his existing deal but they would like to restructure it, paying him what he is due between now and 2015 in 2017 instead, so he will eventually get the full amount he is due, but simultaneously have to commit himself to the club for longer for less, hence the problem. Despite being fit for the past two months, Sneijder sees no reason to agree to such a deal and a move to Turkey is now imminent, with him sat twiddling his thumbs on the sidelines for the time being.

Nevertheless, the wrangling is not over yet it seems, with Inter chairman Massimo Moratti claiming to reporters today: “We want an answer by the end of the day. It would be professional from him if he made a decision shortly.” This would seem to be in stark contrast to Sneijder’s message just two days ago, telling Sky Sport 24: “It is a difficult decision to make. There are still two weeks until the end of the window and I still have time. See, I’m fine and I’m calm. I do not need to decide on Monday.”

[post_link url=” https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/chelsea/has-his-time-finally-run-out-at-stamford-bridge, https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/tottenham/why-his-arrival-cant-be-the-end-of-tottenhams-january-business, https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/arsenal/yann-mvila-perfect-or-poison-for-arsenal” target=”_blank” type=”tower”]

There is clear hesitancy over the move on Sneijder’s part because for all of his injury and discipline problems in the past, he is still capable of being a world-class performer when fit and playing regularly. He doesn’t want to move to Turkey, which is the equivalent of moving to Manchester for Eastenders characters; it’s not an arena fitting of his talents, with only the occasional Champions League outing to look forward to, so with him desperate to move to England, why is there such a shortage of takers?

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly came close to agreeing a deal for the playmaker back in the summer of 2011, but baulked at his €35m (£28.2m) valuation and wage demands, thought to be around the £200-000-per-week mark.

Of course, having only made six appearances all season up until now, partly due to injury and partly because of the contract situation, Sneijder would likely need a few months to get up to speed and build his match fitness, so he hardly represents the ideal January purchase, capable of hitting the ground running. Any such deal to England must be predicated on the understanding that the side will not see an immediete return on their investment until at least the start of next season, by which time he will be 29, so his age is another issue.

The financial side of things must be the biggest stumbling block, though, and any talk of a move to Anfield on those sort of wages, even after the wage bill has been freed up a notch after the termination of Nuri Sahin’s loan spell, is unrealistic. Liverpool have set about slashing wages in recent months just as much as Inter have over the past two years and only the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United could feasibly reach that mark, well out of the reach of the strict wage structures imposed at both Tottenham and Arsenal.

Galatasaray vice-president Abdullah Kigili said of the proposed move last week, telling Vatan: “If what I’m reading about is correct, the cost of Sneijder is both astronomical and absurd. Where will Galatasaray get this money? We have analysed the club’s accounts, and are aware that Uefa are monitoring them as well.

“Who will give us such money, to the point we can spend so much on a single player? Each transfer has to be well thought out. However, the amounts I’m hearing are simply blown out of all proportion.”

Even if the fee alone may be around the £8m mark, which for a player of his ability seems an absolute bargain, it’s wages which are the main draining force and expenditure on club’s budgets these days and it puts him out of the reach of most clubs. Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre appeared to rule out a move yesterday telling Sky Sports: “We don’t have any issues with finances, it is about doing what is best in the long-term interests of the football club, always.

“With the advent of financial fair play it means everyone should be running the club prudently and that does not mean not investing but investing wisely and at the right time, and we will always do that.”

The implementation of Financial Fair Play on the horizon is clearly stopping many clubs from dipping their toes into the murky waters of the Italian transfer market in this particular case and any move for Sneijder has to be seen as a gamble and an expensive one at that, with any potential sell-on value should the move go wrong another troubling matter that warrants discussion.

He has often struggled to integrate himself into any sort of team ethic under countless national team managers and while at Real Madrid. Neither Manchester club are likely to base their system and style around an injury-prone player, no matter how much ability he may have. Ferguson afforded himself one luxury purchase in the summer with Robin van Persie, so it’s doubtful he’ll do the same again so soon after.

The timing looks to be all off for a move to England, with all three clubs that can afford him concentrating on their league campaigns and unlikely to take the risk of loading a player with such sizeable wages onto a settled squad. It’s less an argument about his ability, rather the finances involved and it seems that unless some sort of radical compromise is floated from Sneijder’s camp in the near future, then we won’t be fortunate enough to see him grace England anytime soon.

Man United learn Milinkovic-Savic asking price

According to Corriere dello Sport, Manchester United have been informed that they will have to pay £131m to sign Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic this summer.

What’s the story?

United will be in the market for at least one new central midfielder this summer as head coach Jose Mourinho looks to put together a squad capable of challenging Manchester City for the Premier League title next season.

Michael Carrick will retire as a player to join Mourinho’s coaching staff, whilst the future of Marouane Fellaini is up in the air as the Belgian enters the final months of his contract with the 20-time English champions.

United have long been linked with a move for Milinkovic-Savic, but according to Corriere dello Sport, Lazio have informed the Red Devils that the asking price is a huge £131m.

[ad_pod ]

The English giants have not been afraid to spend big on the likes of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku in recent seasons, but forking out the hefty transfer fee for a player that is largely unproven at the highest level would be a serious risk for the club.

How good is Milinkovic-Savic?

There is a reason why Lazio value the midfielder so highly. The 23-year-old is an outstanding talent, and United would have to battle the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid for his services if they pressed ahead with a move.

Milinkovic-Savic joined Lazio from Genk in the summer of 2015, and the versatile midfielder managed 10 goals in his first two seasons with the Italian club.

This term, the Serbia international has scored 11 times and registered seven assists in 37 appearances in all competitions.

Standing at 6ft 4inches, Milinkovic-Savic is an absolute mountain of a man, and there is no question that he has the physical attributes to thrive in the Premier League.

He has the potential to boss the United midfield for the next few years, and there is no question that interest from the Premier League would turn the midfielder’s head.

The asking price is considerable to say the absolute least, but it would be a stunning capture for United, whose supporters are desperate for the deal to go through, if they managed to secure the Serbian’s services this summer.

The top five Tottenham reads of 2014

Spurs have endured a topsy turvy 2014, with the fallout of the Andre Villas-Boas saga, Tim Sherwood’s gilet, Gareth Bale £100m-gate and ‘Mo PO’s’ early reign all major issues at White Hart Lane.

We’ve been following everything all the way through during 2014, sharing the good and bad times with Spurs fans… so here are five of the very best articles to look back at.

Tottenham’s dream midfield next season

Some have gone and others have emerged, but this midfield may well have a been a good one at ‘The Lane’.

Tottenham’s sixth-place finish is about right when wage bills are taken into account in the Premier League, but some at the club will feel disappointed that the £100million spent last summer couldn’t produce a title charge or at least a sustained challenge on one of the top four places.

Are Spurs showing early signs of a top four team?

Things are clicking into place at Spurs right now, and we called it way back in August…

Last year’s mammoth summer of spending was seen to be the prelude to Tottenham once again claiming a spot in the top four of the Premier League and securing Champions League football.

It was the expectation laid at the door of Andre Villas-Boas by Daniel Levy, even with knowledge of Gareth Bale’s impending sale to Real Madrid. The arrivals, at least two of them tipped as stars of the future, were deemed enough to offset the Welshman’s departure and provide the quality throughout to see Spurs become a Champions League club again.

Simply the top 10 ‘Terrace Legends’ at Arsenal

It is a mammoth task to compile just 10 of the many legends that have walked through the door at Arsenal. From the foreign purchases to home grown talent, the underlying factor has been the Arsenal supporters and their waving of the sword to signify a new hero at either Highbury or Ashburton Grove.

The current group of players and the trophy drought may make it seem difficult to remember a time of rampaging midfield generals and exquisite forwards, but the halls of Arsenal are forever filled with the names of those who have made the club great.

There are disappointments in that many of the recent stars of Arsenal have not gone on to fulfil their roles as undoubted legends of the club, seeking riches elsewhere and losing touch with the importance of the club. But regardless of their actions, it shouldn’t take away from the very real but often disguised figures in the team who are likely to go on to fill in their names alongside the greats of the club.

Rangers fans react to confirmed starting XI vs Celtic

Rangers manager Graeme Murty has made three changes to the side that beat Greenock Morton 3-0 in the SFA Cup last weekend for the huge Old Firm derby against arch-rivals Celtic at Ibrox on Sunday, and Gers fans have been quick to have their say on the selection.

Wes Foderingham, Declan John and Jamie Murphy have returned to the XI in place of Jak Alnwick, Andy Halliday and hat-trick hero Jason Cummings, who are all on the substitutes’ bench alongside Kenny Miller, while Bruno Alves starts again despite reservations from his own fans.

The hosts know that they can close the gap on their Glasgow neighbours to just three points with a victory, keeping their chances of winning the Scottish Premiership title well and truly alive.

Rangers supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the 43-year-old’s selection, and while one said “scores a hat-trick and gets dropped” about Cummings, another simply said “this is perfect”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Premier League predictions – Man United to beat Chelsea & more

Another great weekend of Premier League is upon us with some real corkers in store. Some of the games this weekend include, Liverpool v Hull, West Brom v Crystal Palace, QPR v Aston Villa, but the one that everyone will be watching is Manchester United v Chelsea.

Could United end Chelsea’s undefeated streak? Wll Balotelli finally score for Liverpool in the league? Find out here!

West Ham v Manchester City

Another early kick off for Manchester City as this time they travel to Upton Park to play West Ham. Last weekend the Citizens got a convincing 4-1 home win against Tottenham, but they struggled mid-week in the Champions League away against CSKA Moscow, picking up a 2-2 draw. The Hammers won’t be a walk over either as they have won three of their last four league games, which includes a win at home against Liverpool. City have kept a clean sheet in their last three matches against West Ham in all competitions, scoring 11 goals as well. Sam Allardyce’s side is much improved this season though, with Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia the real danger men to watch for the Hammers. City should walk away with the win.

Prediction: West Ham 1-2 Manchester City

Liverpool v Hull

Liverpool have got off to a poor start to the season considering their aspirations from last season. Last weekend, they just scraped out a 3-2 win against QPR, but mid-week in the Champions League, they lost 3-0 to a much more superior Real Madrid side. Despite his problems mid-week, Mario Balotelli is expected to start and The Reds need the Italian to start finding goals to move the team back up the table to where they want to be. Hull have only managed to keep two clean sheets this season so there might not be a better opportunity for the striker. Liverpool’s defence will have to keep tabs on The Tigers’ Abel Hernandez, who has scored twice in Hull’s last three league fixtures. This should be a close game with the home team just nicking it.

Prediction: Liverpool 3-2 Hull

Southampton v Stoke

High flyers Southampton host Stoke this weekend. Saints manager Ronald Koeman may want to name the same side which thrashed Sunderland 8-0 in their last fixture. Stoke have won two of their last three, which sees them sitting in mid-table, though they have won just once on the road in the league this season. The Potters are also undefeated in their last six matches against the Saints in all competitions, but with the current form of the home side there’s really only one winner in this tie.

Prediction: Southampton 3-0 Stoke

Sunderland v Arsenal

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet is likely to issue out a bunch of changes to his side after they were thrashed 8-0 by Southampton last time out. Vito Mannone’s spot in the team is under pressure after his performance last time out, with Costel Pantilimon on standby. Arsenal comeinto this fixture on a high after producing a comeback and win performance against Anderlecht mid-week in the Champions League. The Gunners still have problems at the back, and will want to eliminate any kind of 89th minute comeback in this fixture by getting and keeping the lead. Calum Chambers returns from suspension that kept him out last week, but Jack Wilshere is suspended. Arsenal have won their last three matches against Sunderland in all competitions and should pick up the win here as well.

Prediction: Sunderland 1-3 Arsenal

West Brom v Crystal Palace

After nearly picking up all three points against Manchester United on Monday, West Brom will have supreme confidence entering this fixture against Crystal Palace. The Eagles have lost just one of their last six visits to the Hawthorns, but only have one away league win to their name this season. Manager Neil Warnock will be out to secure a positive result as they look to secure their position in England’s top flight. The Baggies have form on their side and with the way their striker Saido Berahino is currently playing, they should win this game.

Prediction: West Brom 3-0 Crystal Palace

Swansea v Leicester

After a good start to the season, Swansea have failed to win a game in the league since the end of August when they beat West Brom 3-0 at home. What has gone wrong is not obvious and it is likely manager Garry Monk could make a few changes to the usual team, but they should be able to turn things around against Leicester this weekend. Leicester have lost twice and drawn once since their surprising 5-3 win over Manchester United in September. They have also only managed to score one away goal all season so this should be a nice easy win for The Swans.

Prediction: Swansea 3-0 Leicester

Burnley v Everton

Burnley are still searching for their first win this season as they welcome Everton to Turf Moor this weekend. After a slow start to the season, The Toffees look to be back at their best after a 3-0 victory against Aston Villa last time out. They’ll be aiming to win again this weekend as they look to climb back up the table, and will be thankful Seamus Coleman, James McCarthy and Ross Barkley have returned to help. Everton’s defence is improving and they should be able to hold out any attack by The Clarets.

Prediction: Burnley 0-3 Everton

Tottenham v Newcastle

Neither one of these sides are in the place in the league they want to be in. Tottenham sit in ninth, outside the European spots, whilst Newcastle is in a relegation spot in 18th. Spurs have been playing well in Europe as they won 5-1 over Asteras, and will be looking to bring this form to the league. Newcastle come off their first win of the season against Leicester last time out and will be hoping winning ways continue. The Magpies have failed to win their last nine away fixtures in the league, so Spurs should bag a victory in this game.

Prediction: Tottenham 2-0 Newcastle

Manchester United v Chelsea

Manchester United hosts the undefeated Chelsea at Old Trafford for one of the most anticipated games of the weekend. The Pensioners’ star man Diego Costa is out and Loic Remy could be out as well, meaning Dider Drogba could play up front. Filipe Luis will make his first Premier League start at left-back, replacing the suspended Cesar Azpilicueta. Wayne Rooney is still out on suspension, and is the only major absentee at present for United. With problems at the back, you would expect Chelsea to be all over United on the score sheet, but without Diego Costa it might be a struggle. The Red Devils have also been too open in the midfield, so Cesc Fabregas, Oscar and Eden Hazard could have a field day with the ball. Chelsea will be looking to win to extend their lead at the top of the table, but United will be grabbing this game with both hands to move their way back to a Champions League spot. Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao will come alive in this game and win it for United in one of the most exciting games of the weekend.

Prediction: Manchester United 3-1 Chelsea

QPR v Aston Villa

Despite a defeat last time out against Liverpool, QPR should be confident they can come away with at least a point against Aston Villa. They caused The Reds real problems and could have won the game if it wasn’t for their two own goals. Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert will be worried as his side has scored none and conceded 11 in their last four matches. However, these games were against Everton, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Arsenal. They’ll be looking to rekindle their form from the start of the season, but a draw is on the cards for this game.

Prediction: QPR 2-2 Aston Villa

Brendan Rodgers unsure of Cole future

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admitted that he’s unsure of midfielder Joe Cole’s future at the club.

The ex-England international has failed to make a significant impact at Anfield since his arrival in 2010, with many speculating that he could leave to join Premier League rivals QPR in January.

Despite netting in the Reds’ weekend victory over West Ham, the 31-year-old appears to be way down Rodgers’ pecking order at the club, with youngsters Suso and Raheem Sterling frequently making it into the starting XI.

When questioned about Cole, the Northern Irish coach confessed that he is unsure of his future ahead of the transfer window:

“I’m just going along game by game,” he told the SkySports.

“There is every opportunity for every player.

“It’s not just about the games. Every player gets a chance every single day to show what they are all about.

“Is his future here? You would have to ask him that.”

Rodgers went on to state that former Chelsea man will be given chances to impress should he remain at the club:

“The guy is still a Liverpool player and while he’s a Liverpool player I’ll work as hard as I can with my staff to try to make him the best we possibly can.

“If he’s not going to play as often as he wants then he’s no different to any player really. Players are about game time and money.

“But he’s not any kind of problem, he’s a good guy and we will see what happens over the coming months.”

Tierney is the Baines replacement Everton are looking for

Everton have been linked with a move for Kieran Tierney, and the young Scotsman could be the absolute perfect replacement for the ageing Leighton Baines.

What’s the story?

According to The Mirror, the Toffees are “weighing up a move” for Celtic’s Tierney as they continue to search for a replacement for Baines.

Baines, 33, could yet stick around at Goodison this summer, but the flying full back has lost his pace, and plenty of fans want to see a fresh face flying down the left flank this season.

The 21 year-old Tierney has reportedly been “identified” as Baines’ successor, despite attracting interest from both Manchester United and Tottenham.

The young left back signed a new deal with Scottish champions in October so he won’t come cheap, but the report claims Everton are ready to test the waters with an opening bid.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255857″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Everton’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

A left-sided Seamus Coleman?

Marco Silva and new director of football Marcel Brands have a lot of work to do at Goodison this summer. The first order of business is to trim the wage bill, which has already started with Wayne Rooney confirming his move to the MLS yesterday.

The next item on the list is to improve the starting eleven, and buffing up the defensive ranks is definitely the right starting point. The Toffees have got an ageing backline, and some of the defensive performances away from home last season were truly shambolic.

Silva is known for being a very attack-minded manager, so he needs reliable full backs who have the pace to switch from defence to attack in an instant, and of course the ability to recover in the opposite direction. Basically, he needs a left-sided Seamus Coleman.

Tierney fits this bill perfectly, and the fact that he has already made over 100 first team appearances for Celtic despite only turning 21 this month shows exactly how much Brendan Rodgers trusts him.

While the Premier League is undoubtedly a step up for the youngster, he is only going to get better, and if Baines sticks around to offer a few tips it could be the perfect balance.

Tierney grabbed four goals and an incredible 11 assists last season, and his athleticism and intelligence makes him versatile enough to fill in further up the pitch or even at centre back if needed.

The 9-cap Celtic star loves bombing down the wing, and made his mark in the Champions League last season as well, averaging over one key pass and one dribble per game in Europe’s top competition.

[ad_pod ]

At 21, he’s certainly still got some learning to do, but you only need to look at what Celtic fans say about him to realise just how good this lad can be. Much like the bargain signing of Coleman did, securing Tierney this summer could solve one of the Toffees’ problem areas of years to come.

So, Everton fans, would you like to see a move for Tierney this summer? Is he good enough to make the step up and replace Baines? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…

Heckingbottom pleased with Leeds attacker Hernandez

Leeds United boss Paul Heckingbottom has revealed that he has been pleased with the performances of Pablo Hernandez since arriving at Elland Road last month.

Heckingbottom only took charge of Leeds at the start of February, but the 40-year-old is already under pressure following a record of just one win in five matches.

The Whites suffered a 3-0 defeat at Middlesbrough on Friday night, and now face a home game against Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Leeds are sweating over the fitness of Hernandez, who has missed the team’s last two matches with a groin problem.

Heckingbottom has revealed that the Spaniard has been unable to train due to the injury, but he is hopeful that the 32-year-old will soon return to action.

Heckingbottom told Leeds Live:

“He’s not been training which is not ideal, but he’s not missed a long time. He’s impressed me, performed well. But we have to mindful to get him fit so he can play every game now.”

Hernandez, who is valued at £1.8m by transfermarkt.co.uk, has scored six times and registered eight assists in 33 appearances in all competitions for Leeds this term.
