Ryan Harris' Test chances improve again

Ryan Harris continued to impress ahead of the Ashes by claiming nine wickets for the match, but Ricky Ponting fell for 5

Ryan Harris is in contention for the Ashes after grabbing nine wickets in Hobart•Getty ImagesRyan Harris continued to impress ahead of the Ashes by claiming nine wickets for the match, but Ricky Ponting fell for 5 as Queensland held the upper hand in Hobart. Ponting was an early casualty, playing on to Scott Walter, before Harris added 4 for 68 to his first-innings 5 for 72 in a stunning return. It was Harris’ first Sheffield Shield game back following a disrupted recovery from knee surgery, but he put himself in the frame for the first Test squad, which is named in Sydney on Monday. In a strange move, Cricket Australia has said Harris will be in Sydney on Tuesday for an Ashes function alongside Doug Bollinger, another strong contender for the XI.However, instead of an indication of the Ashes line-up, it might just be a stop-off for Harris on the way to Hobart. At the very least he will be a huge chance to replace Mitchell Starc in Australia A’s side to face England from Wednesday.Starc broke down with a side strain playing for New South Wales on Thursday. Harris has out-bowled all the major contenders for the national outfits but has had the advantage of operating on a Bellerive Oval pitch that has assisted the fast men.Harris’ haul helped knock over Tasmania for 271, leaving Queensland chasing 214 for their opening victory of the competition. After the Bulls’ first innings finished at 254 early in the day, Harris stepped up to have Jon Wells lbw without scoring. Ponting, who scored 32 in the first innings, walked out wanting a long bat, but he was undone on his 17th ball and will have one more Shield game to fine tune before the opening Test.Harris forced an edge from George Bailey (43) and bowled Mark Cosgrove (35), finishing his collection by knocking over Ben Hilfenhaus. Tim Paine followed the opener Ed Cowan’s patient 65 and ensured Tasmania would have something to defend. Paine collected a classy 74 before miscuing to mid-on off the legspinner Cameron Boyce, who finished with 2 for 52 off 21 overs.Queensland’s batting has been a concern this season, but they were helped by rain which meant they only had to face two overs. Wade Townsend and Ryan Broad will resume at 0 for 2 on the final morning.

Everton must sign Worrall this summer

Frank Lampard will need to make many difficult decisions at the end of the season in terms of the Everton squad, despite safety in the Premier League still uncertain it hasn’t stopped transfer interest mounting at Goodison Park ahead of the transfer window.

What’s the word?

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist and transfer insider Dean Jones has named a key role Everton will be looking to recruit for this summer.

Jones revealed: “They obviously need centre backs, and I think they’ll probably sign a very good one in the summer to try and fix their problems.”

A move for Joe Worrall?

If Everton are looking to upgrade their defence this summer with a new centre-back, there’s a good chance that the club will further pursue Nottingham Forest star Joe Worrall.

He has been recently been linked with a move to Goodison Park after scouts were reportedly sent to watch him in the FA Cup this season.

Worrall has been enjoying his football in the Championship with Forest and making a huge impact on improving their chances of promotion to the Premier League six points behind Bournemouth in second and certain for a play-off spot with just three games left to go.

According to SofaScore, the 25-year-old who was dubbed “outstanding” and a “leader” by Steven Gerrard, has been a key player for Forest in his 32 appearances in the league so far with 1.9 interceptions, 1.7 tackles and 3.2 clearances on average per game.

Comedically hailed for being “made out of the same stuff as Wolverine” by Forest journalist Matt Davies, Worrall has also won the majority of his duels combined (62%), proved successful in 81% of his dribbles and kept 13 clean sheets.

The current defenders at Goodison Park have been significantly criticised for their poor performances this season, with Jamie Carragher claiming the current crop were a “Championship back four” after costing Everton on many occasions, and it would come as no surprise if Lampard was to overhaul the defensive line in the team this summer.

Everton will need to focus on their remaining eight games in the Premier League and securing survival from relegation before they make any transfer plans, but signing a player like Worrall would clearly be an upgrade in Lampard’s current squad.

Modi's lawyers want minutes of BCCI meetings

Lalit Modi’s legal counsel has asked the Disciplinary Committee formed by the BCCI to provide him with minutes of meetings of the Special General Body of the Board and the IPL Governing Council

Cricinfo staff24-Jul-2010Lalit Modi’s legal counsel has asked the disciplinary committee formed by the BCCI to hear his case to provide him with minutes of meetings of the special general body of the board and the IPL governing council. The suspended IPL chairman has also asked for a copy of the amended agreement between the board and Sony-MSM, the parent company of the league’s Indian broadcaster.”We have asked for some documents. These are crucial to the proceedings which are already underway as the disciplinary committee and the jurisdiction of the disciplinary committee flows from these documents,” Modi’s lawyer Mehmood Abdi told .”It is essential for us to have access to these documents since the contents we’ve asked will have far-reaching implications for us. BCCI should provide us these documents as the same have implications on the core-issue of recusal, which the disciplinary committee is scheduled to finally decide at its meeting on July 27, 2010 in Delhi.”Modi had filed additional documents to bolster his demand for the removal of interim IPL chairman Chirayu Amin and BCCI vice-president Arun Jaitley from the disciplinary committee that is hearing his case. Modi has repeatedly demanded the removal of Amin from the panel, claiming he holds a grudge because Modi revealed he was part of a failed bid for one of the two new IPL franchises. Modi’s lawyers have also argued Jaitley should not be on the panel either because he had voted to ratify the charges against Modi at the board’s special general body meeting on July 3.”The Board has pleaded before the Bombay High Court that the appointment of the present committee and its charter flows out of the decision taken by the members of the Board in the said meeting,” Modi said. “The jurisdiction of the present committee stems from the said minutes hence it is necessary that these be provided to the applicant.”

West Ham table Ekitike bid

As per le10sport, a West Ham United transfer update has emerged from France as Rob Newman and co table a fresh offer for new striker target Hugo Ekitike.

The Lowdown: West Ham in striker search…

Manager David Moyes, as things stand, is still on the search for a new striking addition over one year after club record signing Sebastien Haller departed for Ajax.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

A plethora of forwards have been linked since then, including sensational names like Brazil international Gabriel Barbosa and Lille sensation Jonathan David.

Alas, despite the reports, West Ham still haven’t sealed an alternative to Michail Antonio but that hasn’t stopped them from trying – with the Irons and Newman now tabling an offer for another new target.

The Latest: West Ham table Ekitike bid…

As per le10sport, West Ham have ‘just transmitted an offer’ of around €15 million (£12.5m) to sign Reims striker Ekitike – with the Irons and Newman even willing to loan him back to the Ligue 1 side for six months.

This bid, they claim, is the only one they have received for Ekitike despite reports of a possible €35m (£29.1m) offer from Newcastle United for the forward.

The report add that the 19-year-old is ‘very popular’ in England as he becomes a man in demand – with the Irons, Newcastle and Watford all interested.

The Verdict: Real prospect…

The teenage talent, scoring eight goals and assisting three others in 18 top flight starts this season (Transfermarkt), is in a really rich vein of form at such a young age – leaving little wonder why he is attracting major English interest.

90min reporter and transfer insider Graeme Bailey is certainly a big admirer, branding Ekitike an ‘outstanding’ forward whilst even claiming he ‘could be the next Mbappe’ (Twitter).

As Moyes and co scour France for some of the nation’s top talent, as backed by insider ExWHUemployee, they couldn’t do much better than Reims’ sensation as a real prospect to watch out for.

With any luck, West Ham and Newman can win the race in January.

Celtic closing in on permanent Jota deal

Celtic are close to turning Jota’s loan move into a permanent transfer, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Jota back in Portugal

Ange Postecoglou has reaped the rewards after the club brought the winger to Parkhead over the summer on an initial loan deal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Jota has scored eight times and registered six assists in just 18 games, but he missed the last seven fixtures prior to the winter break with a hamstring injury.

He has since returned to parent club Benfica to assess his recovery, but it appears as if the Hoops are making the most of the 22-year-old’s time on the sidelines and are closing in on a permanent swoop.

The Latest: Source shares Jota update

Football Insider shared a pundit piece on Saturday, shortly before Celtic announced the signing of Johnny Kenny, with Paddy Kenny reacting to the possibility of Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers joining on a full-time basis.

Within their report, the site was informed by a Celtic source on Saturday that the Hoops are now close to signing Jota following talks with Benfica during the week.

The Verdict: Massive

The option-to-buy fee reportedly stands at £6.5m, so on top of a possible £6m for Carter-Vickers, Celtic could be making a serious investment. However, considering how influential Jota has been for the Hoops, a deal for that amount could actually turn out to be a bargain in the long run.

He is currently valued at £4.95m by Transfermarkt, so should he continue to perform as he has done so far in Scotland, you’d expect that it’s just a matter of time until his market value hits eight figures.

Celtic have shown in the past with Odsonne Edouard that a big-money addition can work following a successful loan when it comes to making an impact and a profit, so hopefully it will be the same with Jota.

Odean Brown and Omari Banks grab career-bests

A round-up of the second day’s action in the fifth round of matches of the 2009-10 Regional Four-Day Competition

Cricinfo staff14-Feb-2010A career-best eight wickets from the legspinner Odean Brown secured Jamaica a first-innings lead over Combined Campuses and Colleges at the Guyana National Stadium. Today it was CCC’s turn to struggle against spin – on day one Jamaica collapsed to Ryan Austin – and their failure allowed Jamaica turn the tables around on day two. Brown snared 8 for 54 from 28.4 overs to send CCC crashing to 161 in reply to Jamaica’s 202; the main contributors to that poor total were Kjorn Ottley (44) and the opener Kyle Corbin (34). Tamar Lambert, the Jamaican captain, backed up Brown with 2 for 21 from 13 overs of offspin. At stumps Jamaica were 37 for 2 with a lead of 78.Brown’s star turn triggered CCC’s collapse from 48 for 0 at lunch. He began the second session by bowling Corbin, 19, with a sharp legbreak and dismissed Omar Phillips via a return catch. Jamal Smith soon followed when he snicked one to Carlton Baugh jnr behind the stumps, and after a 48-run stand Ottley and Floyd Reifer fell in succession before tea. From 115 for 5, CCC folded for 161.At the Bourda, former West Indies allrounder Omari Banks snatched career-best figures to put Leeward Islands in a strong position against <b<Windward Islands. Banks ran through the Windwards' line-up to finish with 7 for 41 as they fell to 204 in reply to Leewards' 325, and that stellar performance gave his team the first-innings points and a lead of 121. That was extended to 143 runs atthe close, without any loss.Windwards had begun the day well, taking the last five Leewards wickets for 71, and were well placed at 81 for 1. Then came a dramatic collapse that saw eight wickets go down for 123 runs. Leading their demise was Banks and his tidy spin, which flummoxed the batsmen for flight and variation. Shane Shillingford's 52 contained eight fours and a pair of big sixes and after that the other contribution was Andre Fletcher's stroke-filled 50 off 82 balls. Banks struck after Windwards were 81 for 2. First he had Liam Sebastian held at slip and then sent back Donwell Hector for 1 as the scoreline became 92 for 4. Lyndon James survived the hat-trick but became Banks' third victim at 102 for 5 when he was snapped up by Mali Richards at short mid-off for 10. The rest came and went without much conviction.Tino Best and Ryan Hinds combined to leave Guyana on the ropes at 189 for 7 against Barbados at the Albion Sports Complex. Best picked up four wickets and Hinds three – following a half-century on day one – and Guyana were 214 runs behind Barbados at stumps. The visitors had extended their score from an overnight 326 for 5 to 403, with Devendra Bishoo taking four wickets on day two, and Best and Hinds combined to shut Guyana out. Only the No. 3 Gajanand Singh, with 66, offered any resistance..

West Ham fans shred Masuaku

Many West Ham United fans slammed Arthur Masuaku during their London derby clash with Arsenal on Wednesday night.

It was a key fixture in the race for the top four, with the Hammers occupying the final Champions League spot at kick-off and Arsenal only two points behind.

David Moyes’ side, who drew 0-0 with Burnley on Sunday, had only won one of their last five Premier League matches prior to the game.

Moyes made one change from the team that was held at Turf Moor, replacing Said Benrahma with Pablo Fornals.

It was Masuaku’s second league start in succession meanwhile, and his seventh overall this season (via Transfermarkt).

Masuaku’s difficult night

The left-back lost possession 19 times over the course of the game – the second most of any Hammers player – and wasn’t able to produce an accurate cross (via SofaScore).

Damningly, football journalist Zach Lowy described his duel with Arsenal right-winger Bukayo Saka as a ‘bloodbath’, calling for Moyes to give him more protection.
