Vince leads Kings' batting effort as Sultans are eliminated

Warner and Khushdil’s cameos also helped Kings post 204, before Sultans folded for 117

Danyal Rasool01-May-2025Karachi Kings dumped Multan Sultans out of a tournament they never really got into, with former Sultan James Vince scoring a majestic unbeaten 65 to ask Sultans to chase 205. Sultans never looked to have the belief they would get anywhere close, and, eventually, didn’t. Kings were tidy, if not spectacular, letting Sultans’ tame, limp display on a blistering afternoon in Lahore do the job for them, and helping themselves to an 87-run win. This game was moved from Multan to Lahore despite Sultans’ objections. But it would have taken more than home advantage to overcome the gulf in the two sides’ performances on Thursday. David Willey conceded just 24 runs in his four overs, but when Michael Bracewell bowled the second over and conceded just as many in those six balls, it was more representative of what Sultans would dish up. That onslaught from David Warner on the New Zealand spinner set the tone for the innings, even if the Kings captain miscued Willey to point for an entertaining off just 30 13 balls. It was one of three wickets Sultans took within 11 balls, and would briefly have raised hopes that they would rein Kings in with wickets. Either side of Warner’s dismissal, Ubaid Shah removed Tim Seifert and Omair Yousuf. But it brought Vince and Irfan Khan together, as they took charge of the middle overs. As Sultans wilted in the heat, the pair cashed in, compiling 78 in 56 balls, and setting up a platform for a big finish.Sultans promised their fielding would stand out this tournament, and for reasons they wouldn’t want, it has. The shelling of a top edge from Vince by Usama Mir at square leg in the 17th over took the Englishman to 50, before both he and Khushdil Shah cut loose. The last 14 balls of the innings yielded 45 runs as Khushdil’s unbeaten 33 from 13 deliveries led the way as Vince offered ample support in his slipstream, smashing Ubaid for a six and a four in a penultimate over that went for 19 runs.Multan Sultans removed Mohammad Rizwan for a duck•PCB

When Khushdil cleared his front leg as well as long-on to heave Chris Jordan for six off the innings’ final delivery and dragged the total above 200, it was merely an exclamation mark on Kings’ dominance.Like a film that has revealed its hand halfway through but still needs to get through the remaining time, the second innings began. Sultans demonstrated there was little fight left, and their captain Mohammad Rizwan fell for a duck in the second over to Abbas Afridi. Usman Khan, once more, played an ordinary shot to scoop a wide delivery into Vince’s hands, while Yasir Khan’s breezy 26 was brought to an abrupt end by Aamer Jamal in the fifth over.Curtis Campher, though, went after Afridi in the final over of the powerplay to bring Sultans up to 53 in six overs, not far off from where Kings were at that stage. However, Sultans couldn’t bring themselves to put together a partnership of note, and the collapse that feels just around the corner was about to be realised. They lost five wickets for 14 runs to go from 76 for 4 to 90 for 9, wickets scattering like seeds in the wind, with Mohammad Nabi the primary grateful recipient. Two wickets in two balls from Nabi put Bracewell and Willey out of the equation before Khushdil mopped up Iftikhar Ahmed and Kamran Ghulam. Nabi added a third before Chris Jordan and Ubaid Shah found 27 runs for the final wicket that got Sultans to three figures while avoiding a three-figure defeat, but when Mir Hamza applied the coup de grace by getting Ubaid, it was almost more a relief for Sultans than Kings.

Essex defend Petersen signing

Paul Grayson, Essex’s head coach, has defended the club’s signing of South Africa opener Alviro Petersen for the first two months of the season

George Dobell10-Apr-2012Paul Grayson, Essex’s head coach, has defended the club’s signing of South Africa opener Alviro Petersen for the first two months of the season.Essex have received criticism in some quarters for allowing Petersen the chance to familiarise himself with conditions ahead of this summer’s much-anticipated Test series against England. The series could well decide who is ranked as the No. 1 Test side. But Grayson, who must cope at the start of the season without Alastair Cook and Ravi Bopara (both of whom are on England duty) and Owais Shah (who is a member of the Rajasthan Royals squad in the IPL), has insisted that Essex’s record of producing young players is excellent and that it was only fair the club, which is desperate to achieve Championship promotion in 2012, utilised the available overseas talent.”We give a lot to English cricket,” Grayson said. “At the moment we’re just thinking about Essex. Alviro was here last year with Glamorgan and had a very successful season. We wanted a top-order batsman and we have been a little bit short of runs in that area over the last couple of years. So we’re delighted to get him on board. I’ve no issue with the England situation. I know they’re playing South Africa later in the summer.”Petersen was also bullish about his arrival. The 31-year-old, who could well open the innings with Cook in a few matches, suggested the presence of overseas players in the county game had improved the standard of county cricket and helped develop the England Test side.”Joining Essex does help with preparations ahead of the Test series against England,” Petersen said. “It makes sure I go into that series ready mentally, physically and technically.”If it wasn’t for overseas players in the past, I don’t think England would be the team they are today. I think it’s important that you get overseas players to come and play here as it helps England cricket in the long run. Playing with guys who have played international cricket is always going to help. It helps the county circuit. It has been that way for years. It helps the standard and the young guys, too.”Essex are not alone in signing one of the South Africa squad ahead of the series. Somerset have brought in the seamer Vernon Philander, while Surrey have signed Jacques Rudolph. Ashwell Prince has also joined Lancashire, though he may not feature in the Test series. All four of them have enjoyed previous spells in English domestic cricket.”We’re very proud,” Grayson said of Essex’s record of producing players. “Our academy structure is very good under John Childs and Barry Hyam, who do lots of good work, and we try to produce our own players. People say it’s a down side when Cook and Bopara go off and play for England, but we want to produce England players. We’re really happy with that. There’s a nice balance in our squad between youth and experience.”James Foster (England), Graham Napier (uncapped but an England squad member in the past), Tymal Mills (England Lions) and Reece Topley (England U-19s) are among the other leading home-grown players in the Essex squad.Grayson also explained the decision to sign veteran South African Charl Willoughby. With young fast bowlers Topley and Mills pressing for places, the 37-year-old seamer could seem surplus to requirements but Grayson felt the depth and experience in the bowling attack required strengthening.”Charl is 37 and has a terrific record in first-class cricket,” Grayson said. “We felt we needed another experienced bowler to support Graham Napier and David Masters. Reece Topley is away now with England U-19s for three-and-half-weeks and is away again in mid-summer for the U-19 World Cup. So that leaves us five quick bowlers for the summer. History will tell you at some stage they will pick up an injury, so it’s vital we have a conveyor belt of five or six quick bowlers so we can rotate them and keep them fit and fresh.”We’re hoping to make a good start this year. Last year we started the Championship a little slowly, but all our preparations this season have been really good.”Our number one priority this year is Championship cricket. It always has been since I’ve been coach. We’ve been a side that has been promoted and then been relegated and I really want us to become an established Division One side in that format. All our focus has been about four-day cricket.”Edited by Alan Gardner

Injured Aravind out for four weeks

S Aravind, the Karnataka medium-pacer, has been sidelined for four weeks due to a knee injury. There was some good news for Karnataka, though, as Manish Pandey was recovering earlier than expected from his hernia operation, and could be part of the squad for the knock-out phase of the Ranji Trophy that starts on January 2.Aravind has a sore right knee, and hasn’t been able to bowl since the first evening of Karnataka’s ongoing Ranji Trophy match against Punjab at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Aravind had had surgery three years ago on his right knee, but that played only a minor role in his current problem. Aravind, who was called up to the Indian one-day squad earlier this year, hasn’t been at his best this season, taking nine wickets at 49.44.His injury leaves Karnataka without all three of their fast bowlers who have been instrumental in the team becoming a major force in the Ranji Trophy over the past three seasons – Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun are part of the Indian Test squad in Australia. The earliest Aravind is expected to return to action is for the semi-finals, if Karnataka qualify.Pandey, who hit a double century against Mumbai in November, was originally expected to be ruled out of the entire season. He has started working out in the gym and is progressing well enough to have a chance to play the quarter-finals.The other cause for cheer for Karnataka on the injury front is that the fast bowler SL Akshay, who made his debut this season, is recovering well from a hamstring problem kept him out of the Punjab match. He is “75% fit” according to the team physio, and a decision on his availability for the final league match against Uttar Pradesh will be taken after a fitness test over the weekend.

Morgan takes reins against old allies

There are two Anglo-Irish sporting fixtures in Dublin over the next few days and it’s safe to say the rugby clash at the weekend will have the nation more hooked than the cricket match at Clontarf on Thursday

Andrew McGlashan in Dublin24-Aug-2011There are two Anglo-Irish sporting fixtures in Dublin over the next few days and it’s safe to say the rugby clash at the weekend will have the nation more hooked than the cricket match at Clontarf on Thursday. However, that shouldn’t diminish the significance of the latter contest, given the recent history between the two teams, the growth in popularity of cricket in Ireland and the added twist that both sides will be captained by Irishmen.Eoin Morgan, who is making his England captaincy debut against the country he represented 23 times at ODI level, has known William Porterfield since the pair were ten but the friendship, which remains strong, will be pushed to one side from the moment the coin is tossed (at 10.15am, because England fly out the same evening). Both players, unsurprisingly, played down the significance of the event but it adds another level of spice to an occasion that is already developing the lively history that typifies sporting contests between the two countries.”It will be different going out to toss against him,” Porterfield said. “But he’s done well for himself across the water. He knows where he wants to go and what he wants to do and I think he’ll be a good captain. It’s a natural progression for someone of his quality. It doesn’t bother me. He’s been playing with them for a couple of years. I’ll be tossing the coin against a mate, but also against England in a one-day international so it doesn’t matter who it is.”Morgan, befitting a player who remains icy cool in the most intense run-chases, wasn’t getting worked up over the prospect of leadership which he believes is a continuation of the role he takes with the bat. “I’m absolutely not nervous, I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “I’m proud of myself, my family are proud of me and the majority of them will be here. It’s a huge honour and privilege to be in the position I am at the moment, for this game in particular.”I wouldn’t have imagined it. I certainly enjoy playing against Ireland and I’ve done it a number of times, playing against some of the guys I’ve grown up with, so it will be an enjoyable day for me. The first time I played against them there was a bit of banter flying around but it’s got to the state where we are all quite comfortable and we don’t really bother much.”Although Morgan’s appointment will take the number of England captains this season to four, the coach Andy Flower – who is also sitting out this fixture – said that Alastair Cook was not given the option of resuming his ODI leadership role, as he was told to rest after a tough assignment of four Tests in five weeks against India. Besides, Morgan, who was named as Twenty20 vice-captain earlier in the season, appears to have depths to his game that England are eager to explore.”It is a good opportunity for him to lead the side,” said Flower. “I don’t think he’s captained much as an adult cricketer apart from the odd occasion for Middlesex. But he’s a confident young man, he is confident in his ideas about the game, he chooses his words carefully and he doesn’t waste words and I think the way he plays and approaches the game is important in a leader and people will follow a man like that.”Morgan missed the match at the World Cup with a broken finger and admits not seeing Kevin O’Brien’s thunderous innings because he as visiting the specialist. However, the scenes in Bangalore on March 2 won’t be forgotten in a hurry – certainly by anyone who was wearing the emerald green that famous evening- and there is an air of confidence around Ireland that victory can be repeated. This time they aren’t facing a full-strength England team – only Jonathan Trott remains from the 11 who took the field that night, although there’s an argument to say it looks a better one-day side than was fielded at stages during the World Cup – and, while privately it may be a disappointment not be able to take on Kevin Pietersen and company, the party line is Ireland are happy for the chance to beat any England side. They are by far the more experienced squad with 511 caps to England’s 202.”When you play any full nation you want to beat them, but in any sport Ireland against England is a big occasion and gives it an extra edge. You’ll see that when they play each other in the rugby,” Porterfield said. “We beat them last time and ran them close in Stormont [in 2009]. It’s a game we don’t struggle to get up for.”Although it has meant some star names aren’t in town, England’s shadow side is not actually a bad thing for this match. That meeting in 2009 – which England edged by three runs thanks to a brilliant piece of boundary fielding by Morgan – was a largely forgettable affair, partly because of the dank weather but also because England didn’t want to be there having completed Ashes victory two days earlier. This time, apart from Morgan and Ravi Bopara, the players who have savoured the huge high of whitewashing India have the chance to reflect and recharge, while a group of hungry cricketers can impress.”We get carried away by names of players,” Phil Simmons, the Ireland coach, said. “If I was in that position I would do the same thing. We have 13 [England] players here with six or seven trying to stay in the squad for next week and six or seven trying to force them out. There will be guys here who will be hungry, so it’s not for me to say who they have sent over.”Morgan also insisted that this squad – which includes four uncapped players in James Taylor, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes and Scott Borthwick – isn’t an example of England taking Ireland lightly, but rather a case of making the most of an opportunity to assess their bench-strength. “We’ve played Ireland three times recently and they have all been competitive games,” he said. “We aren’t taking Ireland for granted because we know what they are capable of and we know we have to play very good cricket to beat them.””Take nothing away from the guys who are coming in,” he added. “A lot of them have already played and the four new guys who have come in are the brightest and biggest talents in English cricket at the moment so no-one should be disappointed with the side we’ve come with. The side is always hungry. It’s why we thrive in the Test arena and what we’re looking to do in one-day cricket as well.”This, though, is no easy warm-up before the Twenty20 and one-day matches against India. Ireland will also be helped by a full house at Clontarf – the ‘sold out’ signs have been up for weeks – and the intimate ground could become quite a cauldron if the home side get on top.”It’s great to play in front of packed house,” Porterfield said. “We played against Australia a few years ago and we should get more this time. It’s right on top of you as well on the boundary edge, it’s a great atmosphere. We’ll be looking to put on a good show and give four or five-thousand people what they want.”

We'll struggle to shed chokers' tag – Majola

Gerald Majola, the Cricket South Africa chief executive, has admitted the team will struggle to shed their chokers’ tag after the collapse which cost them the World Cup quarter-final against New Zealand in Mirpur

Firdose Moonda in Colombo27-Mar-2011Gerald Majola, the Cricket South Africa chief executive, has admitted the team will struggle to shed their chokers’ tag after the collapse which cost them the World Cup quarter-final against New Zealand in Mirpur.”We’ve always had this chokers tag with us; unfortunately we’ve allowed it to stick. We haven’t applied ourselves,” he said in Colombo, where he will watch the semi-final between New Zealand and Sri Lanka on Tuesday. “We have to accept the problem and then deal with it.”South Africa left no stone unturned to address what Majola calls “the problem” before coming to this tournament. They picked a varied and dynamic team, which they used creatively. They employed the same psychologist who worked with the national rugby team when they achieved World Cup glory in 2007. With their new look, Majola said that he was “quietly confident that we would win the World Cup.”After their first six games, he was convinced. “When I looked at the draw, I thought we would play either India or Pakistan in the final. But we failed ourselves. The match was basically a replica of the England game. We needed calm heads.”Majola knows all about being calm under pressure in sport, having played so much of it himself. He contested many finals. One of those was the SA Cup final, a rugby match, where Majola had to take the penalty kick that would force a draw. His side was down 3-0 and the kick was right in front of the posts. He missed.”I remembered that final after the New Zealand game,” he said, adding that the way he felt then was how Graeme Smith felt after South Africa’s loss. “I have known Graeme since he was 18 years old in 1998, when I was a selector, and I have never seen him so distraught.”Majola went into the dressing room after the loss and was confronted with a team that had “tears rolling” out of their eyes. Although he is disappointed in them, he said he can’t be angry because they are “taking ownership” of what happened.Times like these usually call for a massive regime change and heads to roll, but in South Africa’s case the change was always going to happen. Corrie van Zyl and Smith both announced before the tournament that they would be stepping down from their positions as coach and captain respectively. The process to appoint a new coach has already started, with applications closed. “We have a shortlist of six names that we will announce after the tournament,” Majola said. The new coach will be appointed in June and the ODI captain will be decided in consultation with him.van Zyl, who will return to his job as manager of the high performance programme, held a press conference in Johannesburg on Sunday, where he echoed what Majola said about the ghosts of the past catching up with them. “All the disappointments of the past World Cups have caught up with us,” he said. “That’s where the pressure starts piling up. We must remember that most of the squad that played in this tournament weren’t part of those campaigns, but we make them part of that by constantly reminding them of previous failures.”Although South Africa made concerted efforts to overcome pressure, when it was right in front of them, staring them in the eyes, they collapsed. “Pressure is a huge factor,” van Zyl said. “When you reach the knockout phase, there’s the feeling that this is perhaps your last opportunity and you need to make it count. It plays on you and you need to keep your composure. We didn’t do that and that was unfortunate.”He also dismissed all thoughts that the wrong selections were made, with critics saying that an experienced big hitter in the mould of Mark Boucher or Albie Morkel would have made a difference. “I don’t believe we needed anyone else but the 15 players we had. They were the right players for the conditions.”
