Arsenal eyeing £52m "superstar" who could make Havertz even better

There is a good chance they'll fall just short, but Arsenal have had another fantastic Premier League season.

After last year's disappointing conclusion, Mikel Arteta's young side brushed themselves down and again mounted a serious challenge to Manchester City's incredible domestic dominance.

sergej-milinkovic-savic-kai-havertz-arsenal

Not only have the North Londoners been able to stay in the fight for longer this time around, but they have also been even more deadly in front of goal thanks to the arrival of former Chelsea ace Kai Havertz, who has undeniably come good in his new role as the central number nine, and in good news for him and the fans, the club could sign a player who could help take him to another level next year.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent edition of the Spanish newspaper SPORT, Arsenal remain 'very interested' in signing Paris Saint-Germain's incredibly talented youngster Xavi Simons, who is currently on loan with Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

Xavi Simons for RB Leipzig

However, the report has revealed that German giants Bayern Munich also appear interested in the ace, and while he would like to return to his boyhood club of Barcelona, the Catalans are in no financial shape to afford the €60m – £52m – PSG want for their player.

Landing the highly-rated youngster's signature might prove challenging, but the good news for fans is that whatever happens, it's unlikely to drag on too long, with the report claiming that Luis Enrique's side wants any potential deal wrapped up by May 31st.

Ultimately, it would represent a significant investment in a player who is still just 21 years old, but after impressing in the Netherlands and now in Germany, it would be a purchase well worth making by Edu and Co, especially for Havertz.

How Xavi Simons could supercharge Kai Havertz

Now, adding Simons to this young and exciting Arsenal team would likely see all the attacking talent improve, as is the quality of the Dutchman, but the player likely to benefit most from his introduction would be the starting striker, who, as things stand, is currently Havertz.

Last year, for Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven, the "simply fantastic" attacker, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, racked up an incredible haul of 22 goals and 12 assists in 48 games from primarily leftwing and attacking midfield.

In contrast, this season for Leipzig, he has scored nine goals and provided 15 assists from both the left and right of the attack, proving that he can do it in a top-five European league.

The fact that he has turned into more of a facilitator than a goalscorer this season is what should excite Havertz most; as for as brilliant as Leandro Trossard has been this season, he has only provided two assists in 45 games, and Gabriel Martinelli has only provided five as well.

This lack of service from the left-hand side has undeniably impacted how many goals the German has been able to score this season, as despite what some may believe, he is not a profligate finisher.

In fact, according to Understat, his 12 league goals have come from an expected goals figure of 11.83. This suggests that if his teammates were able to provide him with more goalscoring opportunities, he would be able to put them away more frequently, which is where the Dutch "superstar" could come in, as described by U23 scout Antonio Mango.

Ultimately, there is always an element of risk in spending vast sums of money on young players, but when it comes to Simons, it's almost impossible to disagree with data analyst Ben Mattionson's assessment that he possesses "superstar potential."

So, if they have the chance, Arsenal should go out of their way to bring him to the Emirates this month.

Atletico fans turned on Courtois moments after Real Madrid took the lead through Eder Militao and started throwing plastic bottles, lighters and even a bag of trash aimed at the goalkeeper. The referee was forced to stop the game after three warnings failed to have the desired effect as the situation escalated, leading to a 15-minute suspension of play.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In response to the crowd trouble, the RFEF’s competition committee has levied a three-match partial stadium closure, targeting the "Fondo Sur" section of the Estadio Metropolitano, the area from which the missiles were launched. The club will also have to pay a fine of €45,000 (£37,000/$49,000) as part of the punishment. This disciplinary measure is seen as a strong statement by the federation, highlighting that such behaviour will not be tolerated in Spanish football.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

In the wake of the incident, Atletico Madrid have swiftly responded by banning one fan for life. This individual was identified as one of the perpetrators who threw objects onto the pitch. The club has also announced that it is working closely with local police to identify and sanction other individuals involved in the incident. Moreover, Atletico have pledged to implement changes in stadium policies to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future and will be banning ans from wearing clothing that conceals their identity, such as balaclavas, which some fans in the stands were seen wearing during the derby.

Rangers could reclaim the title by signing 31-goal star

Glasgow Rangers finished eight points adrift of first place in the Scottish Premiership table after their 3-3 draw with Hearts away from Ibrox on Saturday.

The Light Blues failed to end their rivals' dominance of the division and they will now be aiming to avoid four years without a title when they return to league action next season.

Philippe Clement's side do still have the chance to enjoy a successful end to the current campaign when they take to the field at Hampden Park on Saturday, however, as they could win their second trophy under the Belgian boss by beating Celtic in the SFA Cup final.

They won the League Cup trophy earlier this term and are now set to compete to land a domestic double, which could help them to deal with the pain of missing out on the Premiership crown.

After the SFA Cup showpiece this weekend, the attention will then fully turn to the upcoming summer transfer window and how head of recruitment Nils Koppen can freshen up their side in order to win the division in the 2024/25 campaign.

Rangers urged to sign SPFL star

Former Scotland international and Rangers youth prospect Michael Stewart has urged the club to swoop for Hearts star Lawrence Shankland this summer.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound on Saturday (18/05/2024), the Scottish pundit claimed that it would be a "no-brainer" deal for the Gers to complete, as he is "far better" than current number nine Cyriel Dessers.

Back in February, Football Insider reported that the Light Blues are eyeing up a double swoop to sign Shankland and current loanee Abdallah Sima on permanent moves ahead of next season.

Lawrence Shankland on international duty with Scotland.

However, the outlet did not reveal, at the time, how much Hearts would want for their impressive centre-forward, or how much the Gers are prepared to pay for him.

It was claimed, by Football Insider, that the SPFL side wanted a fee in the region of £3m for him in the January transfer window, though, and that priced Rangers out of a deal at the time.

After the 3-3 draw with Hearts, Clement lamented his team's lack of efficiency in front of goal as he cited three goals from ten shots on target for his men and three goals from four shots on target for the Jam Tarts.

This suggests that the Belgian head coach would be open to adding a new striker to his squad in the summer in order to improve the efficiency of his forward line.

Koppen must now do what it takes, if it falls within the playing budget, to bring Shankland to Ibrox ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, due to his fantastic goalscoring pedigree.

Why Rangers should sign Lawrence Shankland

The Scotland international is a proven Premiership goalscorer who has the experience and quality to hit the ground running in Glasgow under Clement next season.

Instead of taking a gamble on a player from a foreign league who does not have any prior experience in Scotland, or a young player with little experience in first-team football in any division, Rangers could go out and get a striker who knows exactly what it takes to perform in the Scottish top-flight.

Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland.

The 28-year-old star, who still has plenty of years left ahead of him in his prime years, has made over 100 appearances in the Premiership, over 100 appearances in the Championship, and played 12 European games in his career to date.

Alongside his vast experience in Scotland, Shankland has also proven his quality in the league this season with a fantastic return in front of goal.

The Hearts star, who plundered a whopping 31 goals and eight assists in 47 matches in all competitions, ended the 2023/24 Premiership season with 24 goals in 36 league starts for the club.

As you can see in the table above, Shankland enjoyed a successful afternoon against Rangers on Saturday as he created three chances and scored one goal from just 45 touches of the ball.

His goal was a delightful dinked finish over Jack Butland after a superb run in behind the Gers defence was picked out with a perfect through ball, which gave Clement a first-hand experience of what he could bring to his team next season.

The Jam Tarts captain, whose campaign was lauded as "remarkable" by journalist Josh Bunting, was crowned PFA Scotland Player of the Year for his efforts on the pitch, which speaks to his outstanding quality in the final third.

Why Lawrence Shankland could win Rangers the title

Shankland could help to win Rangers the title, should Koppen seal a deal for his services, as he could add the firepower in front of goal that they lacked this season.

The Gers ended the 2023/24 campaign having scored 87 goals, eight fewer than Celtic's 95, and their strikers left a lot to be desired with their finishing.

Staggeringly, every Rangers centre-forward finished with a tally that was lower than their xG (Expected Goals) as they all let themselves down in the final third.

As you can see in the table above, Clement had an array of wasteful finishers at his disposal in the Premiership this season, particularly his first-choice number nine Dessers – who underperformed by almost six goals.

Whereas, Shankland overperformed his xG by almost six goals, which means that, in theory, the Hearts striker could score between ten and 12 more goals than Dessers did if provided with the quality of chances that the Rangers man had.

Dessers and Shankland

Now, imagine the 31-goal marksman lining up for Clement's team next season and having the high-quality opportunities that Dessers has had.

Given the evidence above, Shankland could thrive at Ibrox as he is a top-quality finisher and that could, therefore, significantly increase the team's goal output and efficiency in the final third.

This could then give them the boost they need to go on and win the title ahead of Celtic next term, which is why Koppen could secure the Premiership title by sealing a deal for him.

Everton eyeing 6ft 6 "revelation" who’d be a monster Branthwaite partner

Everton will be looking to build on an excellent 2023/24 campaign next season, with the aim undoubtedly to pull further clear of any looming relegation troubles.

Sean Dyche completed the impossible task of keeping the Toffees up, following various points deductions that saw the club docked eight points but still finishing 14 points clear of the relegation zone, with the defence largely to thank.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

His side only managed to concede 51 goals throughout the entire Premier League campaign, the best record of any side outside the top four, with Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski partnering each other in all but three matches.

However, the club are already eyeing another defensive talent who could potentially come in and break up the Toffees’ near unbreakable partnership at Goodison.

Everton monitoring goalscoring defender

According to The Athletic, Everton are monitoring Lyon centre-back Jake O’Brien ahead of next season, with the Irish international catching the eye during his first season in Ligue 1.

The 23-year-old made his international debut for his country earlier this week, following a campaign that saw him play a crucial role in Lyon’s qualification for the Europa League.

O’Brien featured 27 times in the league for the French side, scoring on four occasions, finishing as the club’s second top scorer in the league during 2023/24.

He’s enjoyed a rapid rise to stardom since his €1m move from Crystal Palace back in August 2023, achieving more than he or any fan could’ve imagined, with the centre-back producing some excellent stats that could see him be the perfect partner for Jarrad Branthwaite.

Why O’Brien could be the perfect partner for Branthwaite

When comparing the duo’s stats on FBref, Branthwaite appears to have the edge on the Irishman, winning more tackles and aerial duels during the last 12 months, but O’Brien has produced many other figures that the 21-year-old is unable to match.

In their respective outings in the Premier League and Ligue 1, the Lyon defender has scored more and averages more goals per 90, with his average of 0.3 more than double that of the England international.

O’Brien has also dominated with the ball at his feet during the 2023/24 campaign, completing over seven times more progressive carries out from the back and an 8% higher pass completion rate over the course of the season.

The 6 foot 6 “revelation”, as described by journalist Zach Lowy, has demonstrated that he’s capable of making the step up to compete in one of Europe’s top five leagues, with the towering asset able to complement the perhaps more dogged Branthwaite, making them a perfect combination.

It may be his first season competing at such a level, but if O'Brien is able to produce this after one year, the sky truly is the limit for the former Crystal Palace youngster.

He’s valued at £10.1m, as per Transfermarkt, and should the Toffees be able to sign him for a fee close to his valuation, it would be an excellent piece of business, signing a player who would be a monster partner alongside Branthwaite.

Newcastle eyeing "fantastic" £80,000-p/w ace with same agent as Joelinton

With a deal to sign Lloyd Kelly seemingly on the cards, Newcastle United have now reportedly turned their attention towards another free agent, as they look to add more firepower to Eddie Howe's attack.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies have wasted no time before getting their business underway this summer, taking full advantage of Kelly's contract expiry at Bournemouth to reportedly lure him to St James' Park this summer. The versatile defender will instantly ease Howe's defensive depth concerns amid long-term injuries to both Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.

However, it's not just Kelly who Newcastle have been linked to, with Juventus' Dean Huijsen also mentioned in what could be the final piece of the puzzle for the Magpies' backline. Meanwhile, those at St James' Park are also reportedly seeking reinforcements at the other end this summer. And once again, bargain deals are the name of the game.

According to the Sunday Mirror (via Geordie Boot Boys), Newcastle are eyeing a move to sign Kelechi Ihenacho on a free deal following the expiry of his contract at Leicester City. The ex-Manchester City forward helped the Foxes return to the Premier League last season but failed to sign a contract extension and could now square off against his former side next season.

Earning a reported £80k a week and under the same agency as Joelinton, Newcastle would have room for Iheanacho's wages given the financial boost of his free-agent status this summer. A player with plenty of Premier League experience in front of goal, his arrival would be a true bargain.

What's more, with Callum Wilson's Newcastle future in doubt, Iheanacho represents the perfect potential replacement for the England man this summer.

"Fantastic" Iheanacho can ease potential Wilson blow

With Newcastle reportedly among the clubs that need to sell players before the end of June to comply with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules, selling Wilson and replacing him with a free agent in the form of Iheanacho would certainly prove to be wise business. The former Leicester man has certainly impressed in the past, with Pep Guardiola once praising him following their time at Manchester City, saying via Goal: "Incredible. “He is a fantastic person, we had a good relationship, and I'm delighted it's going well lately. He's playing for the injured Maddison and he links really well with the midfield. He's good in behind, he's fast and in the final third he has the right tempo, he is so clear in front of the goal."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?

The Manchester club will aim to end their five-game winless run this weekend as they are back in action in the Premier League against Brentford on Saturday at Old Trafford.

Arsenal now really want £40m star despite Ten Hag being in pole position

Arsenal are thought to be big admirers of a £40 million player who's climbed their summer transfer shortlist, despite Man United being in pole position to do a deal for him as things stand.

Edu and Arteta looking at new centre-back for Arsenal

Despite the fine form of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, who have shone at the heart of Mikel Arteta's defence since the beginning of 2022/2023, it is believed that sporting director Edu could add another central defender to the Spaniard's ranks.

Arsenal boasted the best defensive record in the Premier League last season, conceding fewer goals than any other side in the division, with both Gabriel and Saliba coming as a huge part of that.

However, there is a case to be made that they're lacking star quality alternatives to the defensive duo. Ben White has been starring at right-back under Arteta, while Takehiro Tomiyasu can be deployed at centre-half but is favoured in the wide area.

The same can be said for Poland international Jakub Kiwior, who featured at left-back more often than not last season, and only once as a centre-back against Crystal Palace. Arsenal, therefore, are monitoring different central defensive options to potentially come in this summer.

Indeed, the north Londoners have been linked with Nottingham Forest star Murillo this week as one option. Football Transfers reported that Edu is personally pushing to sign Murillo for Arsenal, with the help of chief scout and close advisor Paulo Xavier, and this is semi-backed by reliable journalist Chris Wheatley.

Arsenal really want Jean-Clair Todibo with Man United favourites

However, according to Wheatley, speaking on Shots TV (via TBR), they also have their eyes firmly on £40 million OGC Nice stalwart Jean-Clair Todibo.

Nice centre-back Jean-Claire Todibo.

Todibo is now above other targets on Arsenal's shortlist, who they apparently must rate pretty highly, but they'll have to contend with Erik ten Hag and United, who are thought to be in pole position right now.

“A name was mentioned to me a few weeks ago and that was Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice,” Wheatley said.

“He’s, again, really sought-after, Man United have been the main name linked with him. But interestingly, I heard that he was above other players on Arsenal’s shortlist.

“The Nottingham Forest defender Murillo – he’s attracted a lot of interest, of course, he had an amazing first season at Forest. Plucked from Corinthians and he’s really caught a lot of interest from teams across the Premier League. Tottenham, as well, really like him.

“I think it’s more Edu at Arsenal who really likes Murillo than Arteta. But Todibo, he’s the one that was mentioned to me. It will be interesting to see exactly what happens to him this summer but I think Man United, at the moment, are probably frontrunners for his signature.”

Newcastle make bid for £50k-p/w Premier League star alongside Calvert-Lewin

Newcastle United have tabled an offer for an "outstanding" Premier League player alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer, according to reliable journalist John Percy.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies are working hard on new signings currently, as Eddie Howe and his team look to bounce back from a relatively disappointing 2023/24 season. In fact, the manager is believed to personally want to sign Andreas Pereira before the start of the 2024/25 campaign, having impressed in a Fulham shirt since leaving Manchester United two years ago.

Everton striker Calvert-Lewin is also seen as a strong option for Newcastle, as he closes in on a move away from Goodison Park to St James' Park. He has four goals in 11 caps for England and could feel that this is an ideal time to enjoy a fresh challenge at this point in his career.

Meanwhile, Mainz 05 winger Brajan Gruda is another possible addition for the Magpies in the summer transfer window, in what could be an exciting piece of business, with the 20-year-old such an exciting long-term talent with a high ceiling in the game.

A move for England and Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi has also been mooted, with Newcastle in need of strengthening their defence, especially with both Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles both long-term injury absentees.

Newcastle make player-plus-cash offer to sign Kilman

Taking to X, Percy claimed that Newcastle have made a player-plus-cash offer for Wolves centre-back Max Kilman, although it has been rejected by those at Molineux.

"Excl – Newcastle make player-plus-cash offer for Wolves defender Max Kilman. Player understood to be Elliot Anderson, but proposal rejected. Interest growing in Kilman (homegrown/ v good appearance record) after West Ham bid turned down on Friday."

Wolves captain Max Kilman

Kilman could be exactly what Newcastle are looking for at the heart of their defence, coming in as a hugely experienced player, but still someone who is still only 27 years of age and with his peak years to come.

The Englishman has been a rock at the centre of Wolves' defence for some time now, making 151 appearances for his current club, and former Wolves captain Conor Coady has lauded his ex-colleague in the past, too, saying:

“I thought he was outstanding, but I would expect nothing else from him.
