All hail Harry Kane! England winners & losers as striker hits new heights in legendary career in win vs Italy

Gareth Southgate's side condemned Italy to a first home defeat in European qualifying since 1999 with a 2-1 victory in Naples

All hail Harry Kane! England’s new record goalscorer.

On a night which saw England make history in Naples, it was their captain who stole the show when he struck from the penalty spot to score his 54th international goal.

The finish pushed him past Wayne Rooney at the top of the England scoring charts and helped the Three Lions claim their first win on Italian soil since 1961.

Declan Rice was also on target, with the West Ham skipper opening the scoring early on before Kane’s spot kick doubled the visitors’ lead before half-time.

Italy responded well after the break and pulled a goal back through Mateo Retegui, but they couldn’t find an equaliser, even after Luke Shaw had been sent off 10 minutes from full-time.

The win sees England get off to the perfect start in their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, while the Italians are left to lick their wounds after a first home European qualifying defeat in 24 years.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

    WINNER: Harry Kane

England’s all time record goalscorer. Congratulations, Harry Kane.

It was always a question of when, not if, Kane would go to surpass Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 England goals. And the Tottenham striker certainly picked a legendary setting to write his name into the history books.

Given what happened to him at the World Cup, it was fitting that Kane broke the record from the penalty spot, putting to bed the ghosts of the quarter-final in Qatar.

That miss against France must have been playing on his mind when he stepped up to take the spot kick just before half-time, but he showed nerves of steel to send Gianluigi Donnarumma the wrong way from 12 yards.

You could see exactly what the moment meant to Kane as he wheeled away in celebration. 54 goals in 81 games for his country. A fantastic achievement.

  • LOSER: Roberto Mancini

Having failed to guide his country to the World Cup, Italy’s manager would have been desperate to get the European qualifying campaign off to a positive start.

But instead he had to watch his side be outplayed by England in Naples.

There was at least a bit of a fightback in the second half, but that will not stop Mancini’s job from coming under more scrutiny.

This was Italy’s first home defeat in a European qualifying match since 1999 and it ended a 40-game unbeaten run in European qualifying which stretched back to a 3-1 loss in France in 2006.

That will only add further pressure to Mancini, who many in Italy believe is already lucky to still be in a job.

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Declan Rice

You can see why so many clubs are battling to be at the front of the queue in the race to sign Declan Rice this summer.

The West Ham captain was exceptional at the World Cup and he picked up where he left off in Qatar with another dominant performance in midfield against Italy.

It was Rice who got England up and running when he opened the scoring early on, reacting quickest to turn home the loose ball after Harry Kane’s shot had deflected into his path.

And then he ran the show in the middle of the park, especially in the first half when Italy just couldn’t cope with his ability to bring the ball out from deep and start off England attacks.

Rice didn’t have things all his own way after the interval as the hosts started to press forward, but he stayed strong and provided the back four with some much needed protection in the closing stages.

West Ham say the only way Rice will leave this summer is for a British record transfer fee and on this performance you can see why. He looks every inch a £100 million man.

    LOSER: Jack Grealish

Grealish has been in impressive form for his club of late, but he struggled to make much of an impression in Naples.

He wasted one glorious chance late on in the first half which would have rounded off a wonderful England move and sent them into the break 3-0 in front.

Why he decided to try and turn in Kane’s cross with the outside of his foot only he will know, but it was a miss that could have proven costly given the way the second half turned out.

This was a big opportunity for Grealish to impress in Naples, with Gareth Southgate picking him over his club mate Phil Foden, but it was one he didn’t really grasp.

Chelsea player ratings vs Nottingham Forest: Raheem Sterling spares Edouard Mendy's blushes but Blues' dismal season continues

Mendy had Sterling to thank after his brace ensured the goalkeeper's dreadful error didn't cost Chelsea the game against Nottingham Forest.

After ending their losing streak last time out, Chelsea took yet another backwards step as they were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by relegation-battling Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Edouard Mendy's calamitous error gifted Forest an early lead as Taiwo Awoniyi capitalised, but a two-goal salvo from Raheem Sterling turned the game on its head after the break. The second strike was sensational, as he cut inside and curled home a wonderful finish to round off a swift couter-attack.

However, the Blues couldn't hold out for a second win on the bounce as Awoniyi was left unmarked to nod in his second just moments after Chelsea had taken the lead. The result leaves Frank Lampard's side marooned in 11th and he is still winless at home since returning to the dugout, while Forest are now closing in on safety.

Here are GOAL's Chelsea player ratings from Stamford Bridge…

  • Getty

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Edouard Mendy (3/10):

Lampard reinstated the player he signed to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga in 2021, and the decision backfired inside 15 minutes when Mendy inexplicably failed to claim a cross, allowing Taiwo Awoniyi to nod home a simple header.

    Trevoh Chalobah (7/10):

A useful attacking weapon as he was often the spare man on the right and popped up with an assist after combining well with Noni Madueke.

    Thiago Silva (5/10):

Two tifos were passed around the stands in his honour before kick-off amid rumours of a possible exit, but he didn't cover himself in glory for the opener.

    Benoit Badiashile (5/10):

Despite having Awoniyi in his sights he failed to read the danger and barely got off the ground. Not great awareness for the second goal, either.

    Lewis Hall (6/10):

Brought in with pretty much every other left-back injured. Generally did well but lost Awoniyi for his second.

    Midfield

    Conor Gallagher (6/10):

Full of running as always and his impetus helped Chelsea grow back into the game.

    Enzo Fernandez (6/10):

Would have hoped to have more influence against the relegation strugglers but was a little withdrawn. Could probably do with a rest after so many games since arriving in England.

    Mateo Kovacic (5/10):

Forced off with an innocuous injury late in the first half. Could have played his last game for the club amid reports he's on his way out.

  • Getty

    Attack

    Noni Madueke (6/10):

Involved in the goal but largely kept quiet before going off after his impressive recent displays.

    Joao Felix (5/10):

Lucky to escape punishment for blasting a ball towards Ryan Yates in frustration, but didn't actually hit him. Came within a whisker of a sensational goal but generally cut an exasperated figure.

    Raheem Sterling (8/10):

A little ponderous when one-on-one and allowed Joe Worrall to make a last-ditch block in the first period. Made amends with a cool finish shortly after the break before a wonderful curling effort to get his brace.

    Subs & Manager

    Ruben Loftus-Cheek (6/10):

On just before half-time for Kovacic. Picked up a neat assist for Sterling's second on the break.

    Kai Havertz (5/10):

Provided more a of a focal point but didn't get the service he needed to make a difference.

    Hakim Ziyech (5/10):

Had a couple of bright moments but wasn't able to engineer anything truly meaningful.

    Frank Lampard (4/10):

The decision to drop Kepa backfired very quickly, and the first-half display was turgid. His half-time team talk worked, but Chelsea's defending wasn't good enough to see out the win.

Man City's best transfers of all-time – ranked

Erling Haaland, Yaya Toure, and Sergio Aguero all paid off their transfer fees by firing Man City to glory – but who is the club's greatest signing?

After firing Manchester City to the treble in his debut campaign, Erling Haaland has been a roaring success since signing for Borussia Dortmund last year. But he has still only had one year at the Etihad Stadium and the Norwegian has a long way to go before he can be talked off as the club's best ever signing.

Colin Bell has a stand at the stadium named after him while three members of City's first Premier League title winning side have statues outside the ground. But which player is the club's greatest signing of all? GOAL ranks the club's 10 best ever transfers…

  • Getty

    10Shaun Goater

City were on the precipice of disaster when former Manchester United striker Goater arrived from Bristol City for £510,000 in 1998. He couldn't stop them from being relegated to the third tier – the lowest point in the club's history – and City needed to bounce back quickly.

Goater became the spearhead of back-to-back promotions, scoring 50 goals in two seasons as City made a stunning return to the Premier League.

His most iconic moment came in the final Manchester derby at Maine Road in 2002, when he scored twice in a 3-1 victory – the first win against Sir Alex Ferguson's side in 13 years. With 103 goals in 211 appearances, Goater's role in City's history cannot be underestimated.

    9Pablo Zabaleta

The final signing before the Sheikh Mansour-era began, it was spirit and desire that made Zabaleta such a success in his nine years at the club.

Mark Hughes was brought to City because of his talent-spotting ability, and no player epitomised his eye for raw quality more than Zabaleta, who cost just £6m when joining from Espanyol. It became almost regulation for the Argentine to leave the pitch with a bandage around his head or bloody nose, such was his commitment.

But that was matched with a huge amount of talent, as he won his battle with Micah Richards to become the first choice right-back under both Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini. After 333 appearances, two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two League Cups, Zabaleta left for West Ham on a free transfer, twice returning to rapturous welcomes.

  • Getty Images

    8Carlos Tevez

Tevez became a cult figure at City before he had even kicked a ball after the way he ditched Manchester United to move five miles down the road. City announced the signing with their famous "Welcome To Manchester" billboard – a dig at the fact that Old Trafford is outside the city – which riled Sir Alex Ferguson and sparked a tense rivalry.

United fans had wanted Tevez to stay after his two years at the club, but as talks stalled, City pounced and, in 2011, the Argentine helped them to their first trophy in 35 years when they beat Stoke City in the FA Cup final.

City won the league title the following season, but it wasn't all plain sailing, with Tevez disappearing for more than four months after a bust-up with boss Roberto Mancini. He celebrated his return, however, with a now-iconic golf swing goal celebration after being pictured playing golf during his hiatus.

    7Erling Haaland

Haaland arrived at City with an already astonishing strike rate but after a rusty debut in the Community Shield, some wondered whether he would be as prolific in the Premier League. He crushed any doubts with two goals on his league debut against West Ham and barely looked back.

The Norwegian sent long-standing records by greats such as Mohamed Salah, Alan Shearer and Andy Cole tumbling on his way to scoring 36 times in his debut season, finishing the campaign with a jaw-dropping 52 goals in 53 matches in all competitions.

Most importantly, he helped City ended their long wait to win the Champions League in his first campaign with the club, embracing the fact that they had signed him to finally land their holy grail. The £51 million City paid for him already looks like a bargain.

Cristiano Ronaldo lie detector results! Would Portuguese trade Champions League titles for World Cup win & is he the greatest goalscorer of a generation that also includes Lionel Messi?

Ronaldo has won the Champions League on five occasions. The first of those triumphs came while on the books at Manchester United, with the other four enjoyed during a record-breaking stint at Real Madrid. When asked if he would swap his European titles for a World Cup win with Portugal, Ronaldo said he would not. The lie detector – which was taken in association with – said he was telling the truth.

    2026 World Cup

Ronaldo is the all-time leading goalscorer in the history of men’s international football. He has earned 200 caps for his country and continues to make himself available for selection. He may well grace the 2026 World Cup – which would be his sixth appearance at FIFA’s flagship event. Asked if Portugal are capable of winning that tournament, Ronaldo said “yes”. That was considered to be a lie, with the 38-year-old saying: “What a pessimist, huh?”

  • Best goal

The Portuguese icon has scored many memorable goals down the years, but few can be considered better than the stunning bicycle kick he netted for Real Madrid during a Champions League clash with Juventus in 2017-18. Ronaldo said that effort was his best, but was informed that he was lying. He was not having that and said of that strike: “For me it's the best goal. You can say it's the most difficult… the most beautiful. It depends, so many things.”

    Keep going

Ronaldo is still going strong at Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, with 12 goals recorded through 11 games this season. He has always kept himself in the best possible condition and is expected to play on for some time yet. Ronaldo was considered to be telling the truth when admitting that he plans to play on into his 40s.

France player ratings vs Ireland: Aurelien Tchouameni is the future of the French midfield! Real Madrid star leads Les Bleus to comfortable victory

The Real Madrid star scored France's opener and controlled the game from midfield against the Republic of Ireland.

Aurelien Tchouameni scored a wonderful goal and turned in a complete performance as France took another step towards Euro 2024 qualification with a comfortable 2-0 win over Ireland. In an otherwise drab game, Tchouameni shone, turning in a complete showing that offered immense promise for a France side that will surely be one of the favourites next summer.

After a rather poor start from the hosts, Tchouameni opened the scoring — and did so in style. The Real Madrid midfielder pinged an effort into the net from outside the box, curving the ball around two defenders and past a helpless keeper.

France had the ball in the net on a second occasion just before half time, but substitute Marcus Thuram was adjudged to have been offside in the build-up to Kylian Mbappe's effort.

Thuram made up for his mistake early in the second half, though. Mbappe saw a shot deflected, and Thuram pounced on the rebound, firing the ball into the roof of the net to give France a 2-0 lead. There could have been more for the home side as the half wore on. Ousmane Dembele rattled the post. Tchouameni almost had a second. Mbappe, for his part, tried everything to find the back of the net — only to be left frustrated. Still, France remained in control, comfortably seeing off an inferior side.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Mike Maignan (7/10):

Made an impressive stop at 2-0 to prevent Ireland from getting back in it.

    Jules Kounde (6/10):

Reprised his right-back role with Barcelona, to mixed results. He covered well against counter-attacks, but wasn't always speedy in the build up.

    Dayot Upamecano (7/10):

Had very little to do except circulate the ball — which he took care of comfortably.

    Lucas Hernandez (6/10):

Lined up alongside his brother for the first time in nearly a year, and was solid — if rather scrappy.

    Theo Hernandez (7/10):

Did his bit getting forward, and connected with Mbappe well. Probably would've had an assist if the France finishing had been more effective.

  • Getty

    Midfield

    Aurelien Tchouameni (9/10):

Opened the scoring with an exquisite strike from outside the box — one that evoked memories of his wonder goal against England in the World Cup. Would've had a second, if not for an excellent save. Controlled the game expertly. Was still putting in tackles in the 95th minute.

    Adrien Rabiot (7/10):

Solid without being spectacular in central midfield, which is sort of his thing. Doesn't play a starring role, but is immensely effective.

    Antoine Griezmann (7/10):

Wonderful in the No.10 role, even if he didn't score or assist. Mbappe is the star, but Griezmann is the driving force of this ever-improving France side.

  • Attack

    Ousmane Dembele (6/10):

Some good moments — including a shot that rattled the post — but was mostly dealt with by the Irish defence. Still hasn't really convinced for his country.

    Olivier Giroud (5/10):

Went off injured after making a bright start to the contest.

    Kylian Mbappe (6/10):

Lacked sharpness in the early goings, overhitting a few crosses. Had the ball in the net, but saw it chalked off for offside. Not his night, but there will be others.

  • Subs & Manager

    Marcus Thuram (6/10):

Brought on for Giroud midway through the first half. Scored France's second to provide valuable separation.

    Kingsley Coman (6/10):

Didn't have time to make an impact. The fact that he comes off the bench shows how deep this side is.

    Benjamin Pavard (N/A):

    Only played for five minutes

    Eduardo Camavinga (N/A):

Will be disappointed not to start. At least he wasn't forced to play left-back.

    Didier Deschamps (7/10):

Has a wealth of talent at his disposal, and his only real point of controversy was sticking with Giroud over Kolo Muani. It didn't really matter; his side dealt with Ireland fairly comfortably.

PSG player ratings vs Clermont Foot: Kylian Mbappe kept quiet while Ousmane Dembele is wasteful as champions drop more points

Luis Enrique's side misfired in the final third as the Parisians were held to a goalless draw against their struggling hosts

For the first time this season, Kylian Mbappe barely had a sniff. The France forward toiled through 90 minutes for Paris Saint-Germain, but was starved of opportunities as they were forced to settle for a frustrating 0-0 draw against last-placed Clermont Foot in Ligue 1.

In Mbappe's stead, Ousmane Dembele failed to capitalise, unable to strike when handed numerous chances for Luis Enrique's side. Dembele enjoyed the best chance of the early goings, firing wide after a sweeping PSG move down the left-wing. The France winger had another go shortly before half-time, but lashed a volley at the goalkeeper from a tight angle.

Clermont did offer a threat going forward, meanwhile. Gianluigi Donnarumma had to make a duo of acrobatic saves just after half-time, and was called upon again a few minutes later. Mbappe responded with a close attempt of his own, missing the target after a well-worked attack.

Goncalo Ramos offered an injection of attacking quality off the bench, but replicated his team-mates' struggles in key moments, seeing a close-range effort denied after a swift Parisian move.

GOAL rates PSG's players from the Stade Gabriel Montpied…

  • Goalkeeper & Defence

    Gianluigi Donnarumma (7/10):

Made three saves — two of which denied what seemed to be certain goals.

    Achraf Hakimi (6/10):

Clermont tried to exploit the space in behind him, and were largely successful in doing so.

    Danilo Pereira (7/10):

A solid shift at centre-back, including one vital goal-line clearance.

    Milan Skriniar (7/10):

Better on the ball than in recent weeks, and made some neat forward passes. Lost his man on a few occasions, though.

    Marquinhos (6/10):

Solid at left-back, and didn't try to get forward too much — which was a good idea considering how attacking PSG's left side is.

  • Getty Images

    Midfield

    Bradley Barcola (5/10):

Tracked back effectively, made one crucial block to prevent a Clermont Foot goal inside 10 minutes. But he was a bit loose at the other end, some poor touches halting promising PSG attacks.

    Vitinha (6/10):

Tidy on the ball, but a bit lacking in the final third. Not his best showing after a strong run of form.

    Fabian Ruiz (5/10):

Part of a double pivot that struggled to gain control of the game in the early goings. Didn't to enough to suggest he deserves regular playing time.

    Ousmane Dembele (5/10):

Could, and perhaps should, have scored twice in the first half. Wasteful in the final third at times.

  • Getty Images

    Attack

    Randal Kolo Muani (6/10):

Played in a more central role alongside Mbappe. Had some nice touches, but wasn't clinical enough

    Kylian Mbappe (6/10):

A bit of a frustrating game as he was double-teamed every time he touched the ball.

    Luis Enrique (5/10):

Went for a very attacking side, with Dembele, Kolo Muani, Mbappe and Barcola all forced into the same side, and it didn't work out. It's not a bad point, but it'll be a frustrating one.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

He has not got off to the best of starts at St Andrew’s, with back-to-back defeats suffered against Middlesbrough and Hull City, with Rooney yet to put his stamp on a squad that had reached the play-off places under his predecessor John Eustace.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

A change was made in the dugout as NFL legend Brady – who is a now an investor in the club – and his fellow board members wanted to deliver a more exciting brand of football. Rooney is buying into that, but has said of those at his disposal: "We're asking them to play more front-footed when you're probably more a bit on the back foot. We're asking them to try and take the ball. Too many players are too happy to pass the ball and let their team-mate deal with it. That needs to improve. We have to put teams under pressure for longer periods. But the Middlesbrough game and this one have helped me see that some players can't do it, which is fine. It helps me in terms of understanding and adjusting a bit. I'm not asking them to change too much from what they are doing but we have to be patient. It's a big change for them. We created a lot of problems for ourselves. We give the ball away too cheaply. But the really disappointing thing for me was that after Hull got the second goal I didn't see a reaction. That can't happen again. They're aware of that."
