Liverpool: Fekir snub indicates just how strong Klopp’s faith in squad is

According to the Independent, Champions League winners Liverpool have no intention of pursuing Lyon star Nabil Fekir.

It was only a year ago that Liverpool, fresh from their fourth-place finish, were on the cusp of completing a transfer coup which would have seen them acquire the Frenchman for £53 million – a move so close to being wrapped up that the player had undergone the formalities, been interviewed and photographed in a shirt, when they pulled out at the last over worries about a reoccurring knee problem.

They claim rumours from France would have you believe that Klopp is still interested in the 25-year-old, who scored 12 goals and created nine more this season, but despite only having 12 months remaining on his current contract, it is understood that the club’s stance has not changed since the player failed his medical.

It really is telling that Liverpool, despite losing out on the Premier League title by a single point, are willing to let this deal pass. The fact that they don’t need a player we consider to be one of the brightest in Europe, having bagged 69 goals and 46 assists in all competitions for Les Gones, while other teams may jump at the opportunity if given the chance, truly speaks volumes about the faith Klopp has in his current players. Individuals like Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jordan Henderson, who aren’t necessarily world beaters but are “Liverpool” players through and through; hardworking, dedicated, selfless and passionate.

Attacking midfield might be a slight problem, yes, and someone like Fekir would naturally fit in a role like that, but there are options in the squad and it does appear as if the Reds value what they currently have – or who they can potentially get – more. After all, it’d be hard to argue against the club’s transfer policy in recent years.

Indeed, the Reds need to avoid nit-picking luxury stars like Fekir – who is a World Cup winner keep in mind – to ensure they don’t spoil the balance and chemistry permeating through their current squad.

Their philosophy and faith in their current players take precedence over any individual talent, no matter how good, and that’s what has allowed the group to form such an evidently special relationship together – a real “team” bond, one Andy Robertson talked up to the Daily Mail last month.

Liverpool fans, do you think there’s still a place for Fakir in your squad? Where do you think you need to strengthen this season? Let us know in the comments below…

West Brom: Masi drops contract claim

West Bromwich Albion could struggle to sell a number of their unwanted players in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Joseph Masi, with the Express & Star journalist stating his belief in a recent video that, with Albion having handed out a number of long-term deals earlier this season, Steve Bruce – or whoever West Brom’s manager happens to be this summer – may struggle to revamp the Baggies first-team squad ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Speaking about Albion’s plans for the summer, Masi said: “The contracts thing is a real worry; Karlan Grant, Callum Robinson, Kyle Bartley, Jake Livermore, Matt Phillips, Darnell Furlong – they’re all on long deals.

“I’m not saying those players all need to leave, but if you want to refresh this group – which, let’s be honest, any manager probably would – they’re all on long-term deals, can Albion offload them? After this season, it’s going to be very, very unlikely.”

Fans will be seething

Following the 2-0 loss to Swansea City on Monday night, West Brom find themselves languishing down in 13th place in the Championship standings – eight points behind Luton Town in sixth, having played a game more than the Hatters.

Indeed, even the most optimistic of Albion fans would struggle to make a compelling argument that, with 12 league fixtures left to play, West Brom still have a chance of securing promotion back to the Premier League this season.

As such, with the Baggies paying out a reported £18.5m-per-year in salaries, with another year in the second tier looking incredibly likely, this wage bill will undoubtedly need to be trimmed rather dramatically.

However, with Grant earning £20k-per-week until the summer of 2026, Robinson on £18k-per-week until 2025, Bartley earning £15k-per-week until 2023, Livermore on £16k-per-week until 2023, Phillips taking home £12k-per-week until 2024, Furlong on £15k-per-week until 2025 and Kenneth Zohore earning £26k-per-week until 2023, it would indeed appear unlikely that Albion will be able to shift many – if any – of these players come the end of the season.

If this does turn out to be the case, not only will the manager find it an extremely difficult task to refresh his West Brom side this summer, but the club will also be burdened with what is essentially a Premier League wage bill without the windfall of cash that comes with playing in the top flight – something that, considering this is a mess of the Baggies’ own making, is sure to have left fans seething.

Romano drops big Carvalho to Liverpool update

Writing in a column for Anfield Watch, reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest on Liverpool’s attempts to sign Fulham forward Fabio Carvalho.

The Lowdown: Liverpool so close…

In the final hours of deadline day, as reliably reported, Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp were very close to striking a deal for the Cottagers ace.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/liverpool-latest-developments/” title=”Liverpool latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, eleventh hour talks were held over a move for Carvalho with both clubs even agreeing on an £8 million fee which included add-ons and various clauses in the deal (The Athletic).

However, due to the late nature of this agreement, Liverpool transfer chiefs could not finalise the necessary documentation in time – resulting in the transfer’s collapse.

Since then, the Reds have been tipped to go back in the summer and seal his move, with Romano now sharing the latest out of Anfield.

The Latest: Romano shares update…

Writing in an Anfield Watch column, the Italian reporter says Liverpool are now ‘waiting to see’ if a deal for Carvalho can be ‘formally agreed upon’.

This comes after Fenway Sports Group hold ‘productive talks thus far’ with the ball now seemingly in Fulham’s court.

The Verdict: Get it done…

A very exciting player, signing Carvalho surely comes as a no-brainer for Klopp and the Premier League title chasers.

Just 19-years-old, the high-flying starlet has turned heads with his scintillating form over 2021/2022 – bagging seven goals and five assists in the Championship so far.

He’s also put in notable performances against the likes of Manchester City in other competitions with pundit and ex-Leeds United striker Noel Whelan in no doubt Liverpool should make a move.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan claims Carvalho is the ‘perfect fit’ and ‘perfect style of player for Klopp’ and we believe he may just have a point.

Celtic had a nightmare on Romain Perraud

When Celtic were planning for life after Kieran Tierney in the summer of 2019 – with the left-back having been heavily linked with a move away from Parkhead for a number of months, before ultimately sealing a £25m move to Arsenal – Neil Lennon and Peter Lawwell were believed to have identified a number of targets to replace the Scotland international.

One such target was reported to be OGC Nice’s Romain Perraud, a former France U21 international who had highly impressed on a season-long loan spell at Paris FC, while another was Rapid Vienna left-back, Boli Bolingoli.

And, despite contacting the Ligue 1 side regarding a deal for Perraud, Lennon and Lawwell ultimately decided to go with Bolingoli – spending a quite considerable £3m on the Belgian, while Perraud went on to join Stade Brestois in a £1.8m move the same summer.

However, since these moves, the careers of Bolingoli and Perraud have gone in quite contrasting directions, with Celtic’s decision to go with the 26-year-old ahead of the Frenchman proving to have been something of a nightmare.

Celtic had a nightmare on Perraud

Indeed, the £1.35m-rated Bolingoli failed to impress over 14 Scottish Premiership appearances in his debut campaign, before being bombed out of Lennon’s first-team squad after being found to have broken lockdown restrictions in August 2020.

Since then the £12.5k-per-week dud has featured just heavily linked with a move away from the club for the past year.

Meanwhile, following Perraud’s move to Brest, the defender has gone from strength to strength, highly impressing over his 36 Ligue 1 appearances last season, scoring three goals, registering seven assists and creating five big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of one key pass, 1.3 interceptions, 1.7 tackles and winning 4.7 duels per game.

These returns not only saw the player who French football expert Adrien Dryll dubbed “deadly” average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 6.96 that season – that ranks him as his club’s sixth-best player in the league – but they also earned the 24-year-old a move to the Premier League, with Southampton paying £10.8m for Perraud last summer.

As such, not only did Celtic miss out on an extremely talented player when Lawwell sanctioned a move for Bolingoli ahead of Perraud back in the summer of 2019, the Bhoys also missed the opportunity of a huge payday – something that the club will undoubtedly be regretting.

Wolves trio struggle in shock Leeds defeat

Wolves trio Willy Boly, Romain Saiss and Raul Jimenez all struggled in the chastening 3-2 defeat at home to Leeds United on Friday night.

Bruno Lage’s side suffered a dramatic loss to the Whites at Molineux in what was a Premier League classic. Wolves led 2-0 thanks to goals from Jonny and Francisco Trincao, but Jimenez was shown a red card in the second half and the game was duly turned on its head. with the visitors striking three goals, including a stoppage time winner, to complete a crazy turnaround.

We’ve looked at the numbers from statistical experts Sofascore to analyse who the Old Gold’s three worst players were on the night, among those to have played for 45 minutes or longer.

Willy Boly – 6.1

Making a rare start this season, Boly failed to enjoy a productive night upon being restored to the first XI. The centre-back lost possession 18 times in total and was part of a Wolves defence which fell to pieces after Jimenez was sending off., conceding three times in a fairly short period.

Boly also played only three accurate long balls out of 13 attempted and won just half (3/6) of his ground duels.

Romain Saiss – 6.1

Saiss was another Wolves player who was far from his best at Molineux as his team’s European aspirations took an almighty hit.

The Moroccan didn’t win either of his two aerial duels against Leeds, also prevailing in just two out of six ground duels as he failed to dominate at the back.

Saiss also gave away two fouls and lost possession eight times in what was an erratic showing from a player who has largely been excellent this season.

[freshpress-quiz id=“388797″]

Raul Jimenez – 5.1

It was Jimenez who got the lowest rating, no doubt chiefly because of his red card, although it seemed a harsh decision following a foul on Illan Meslier which earned him a second booking.

Nonetheless, the Mexican only managed 26 touches during his 53 minutes on the pitch, the second fewest of any Wolves starer, also losing the ball 10 times and winning just three out of 11 ground duels.

No tackles or interceptions recorded highlighted how Jimenez also struggled out of possession on a bad night for the 30-year-old.

Everton injury news on Mina

A medical expert has now dropped some more injury news for Everton involving Yerry Mina.

The Lowdown: Townsend joins injury list

Andros Townsend has now joined the Goodison Park faithful’s injury list alongside Mina, as he will miss the rest of the season after damaging his anterior cruciate ligament in the 4-0 loss away at Crystal Palace in the FA Cup over the weekend.

As for Mina, Frank Lampard told The Liverpool Echo last week that the Colombia international is still ‘a few weeks away at best’.

The Latest: Dinnery on Mina

Speaking to Football Insider, Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis, has claimed that Mina should be starting light work next month, as he looks to recover from his injury:

“Mina’s place in that Everton team cannot be understated.

“All of the data shows that when he plays, they get more points. The issue is trying to keep him fit.

“He’s had only eight Premier League starts this season, only two this year, and only four since September.

“This latest setback came after return from another injury. So you ask, how do you manage this player?

“There are factors that will influence when he returns to play, such as the availability of Ben Godfrey, Mason Holgate, Michael Keane.

“Also, where Everton are in the table in two or three games time. If they get a couple of wins, that can change the complexion.

“Light work for Yerry Mina won’t be far away, maybe mid to late-April. But other factors come into consideration when deciding when he can play again.

The Verdict: Worrying

These are certainly worrying times for the Merseyside club, given Townsend’s latest injury, on top of Mina potentially not returning to training until the end of next month.

Of course, the central defender will not be ready to play games straight away, and Frank Lampard’s team will only have four matches left, plus any rescheduled fixtures, by the time May comes.

There is no doubt that they are a better side when he is in it, as four of the Blues’ seven wins in the Premier League have come when he is playing, and the fact that he was missing in the 5-0 drubbing away at Tottenham Hotspur, after which Jamie Carragher called the defence a ‘Championship back four’, says a lot for his credentials.

Nonetheless, Lampard will just want him back fully fit for their last few fixtures.

Predicted West Brom XI to face Birmingham

West Bromwich Albion travel to face Midlands rivals Birmingham City on Sunday afternoon in what could make for a fierce clash.

On Friday, Steve Bruce revealed that the Baggies had just 11 fit players over the international break, whilst the rest of the squad were representing their respective nations.

According to the 61-year-old, notable injuries include “exciting” 21-year-old striker Daryl Dike, Kenneth Zohore, Kean Bryan and Matty Phillips, who are all at different stages of the rehabilitation process after suffering injury setbacks.

Apart from the injury to Dike, the squad is in the same shape as before the international break, which is a big positive for Baggies fans. However, Bruce still has a lot to consider, as Albion will be looking to add to Birmingham’s disappointing pattern of failing to score in any of the last three games.

Andy Carroll will be hoping to start, having not played a full 90 minutes since late February, but that may be a tough ask, with the partnership between Karlan Grant and Callum Robinson starting to blossom over the last few weeks, with five goals in the last three games for the pair.

In terms of system, it’s expected that West Brom will continue to deploy their defensive three formation, and it would not be a surprise if we saw both teams shaping up in a 3-5-2 system and going man-for-man.

Here is our predicted Albion XI ahead of the clash with Birmingham on Sunday:

Johnstone; Ajayi, Bartley, Clarke; Furlong, Gardner-Hickman, Livermore, Mowatt, Townsend; Robinson, Grant

It could be the case that Steve Bruce will stick rather than twist, despite a relatively disappointing performance last time out against Bristol City.

In terms of form coming into this game, West Brom hold the advantage, having bagged two wins and two draws across the last five fixtures; including an impressive 1-0 defeat of Championship leaders Fulham.

Meanwhile, Lee Bowyer’s Birmingham side come into Sunday’s clash having picked up just five points from a possible 15, not the sort of form you’d want to be in during the business end of the season.

Despite failing to score in four out of their last five games, it is certain that the Blues will feel the pressure from their home support coming into this tie and will look to disrupt Steve Bruce’s side as the Baggies look to add to their ascending momentum.

Spurs: Superbi drops Zaniolo claim

Tottenham Hotspur have been tipped to make a move for Nicolo Zaniolo in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Virtus Entella sporting director Matteo Superbi, who claimed in a recent interview with Calciomercato (via Sport Witness) that the Serie A side could be tempted into selling the 22-year-old this summer.

Superbi went on to state that, despite the Italy international having suffered a number of injury setbacks in his career, the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus would all be interested in a move for the versatile winger – for whom Roma could demand a figure of around €50m (£42.5m).

Speaking about Zaniolo’s future, the 53-year-old said: “I think a [player born in] ’99 of that level could be worth €50m; I don’t think I’m saying the wrong thing. It will be more a choice of Roma, who will decide what to do with Zaniolo – but that’s the value.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he was bought by a top English team; the real unknown is that despite being very young, he has already had two major operations. I wish him well and that he has given his all in terms of injuries.

“Nicolo has excellent technique but great physicality. The ball is in Mourinho’s court and Roma’s court. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were clubs like Juve, Tottenham or Manchester interested. It’s still an investment for big teams.”

Forget Dybala

While it is true that, despite clearly possessing an enormous amount of ability, Zaniolo’s career has started to stagnate at the Stadio Olimpico somewhat, should Antonio Conte believe he can be the manager to help the 22-year-old go on to fulfil his undoubted potential, the Italian would be a fantastic signing for Spurs.

Indeed, after making a €4.5m (£3.8m) move to Roma back in 2018, the £29.7m-rated forward went on to score four goals and provide three assists over his 27 Serie A appearances in 2018/19, before following this campaign up with returns of six goals and two assists over 26 league outings in 2019/20.

This level of performance led to the youngster being showered with considerable praise, none less so than from Giallorossi legend Francesco Totti, who said of the attacker back in 2018: “Zaniolo is explosive and he plays with an unusual ease. If he continues this way he could become a great player.”

However, a cruciate ligament rupture saw the £75k-per-week Italian miss the entirety of Roma’s 2020/21 campaign, with Zaniolo only returning to the pitch at the beginning of this season.

And, despite still struggling with the odd injury here and there, the player who Mourinho claimed “there are few out there with this amount of potential” has started to show glimpses of his talent over his 23 Serie A appearances in the current campaign, scoring two goals, providing two assists and creating three big chances for his teammates, as well as completing an average of two dribbles per game – the joint fifth-most of any player in the top flight of Italian football.

As such, while Spurs have been heavily linked with a move for another Serie A sensation in the form of Paulo Dybala in recent weeks, it would appear extremely advisable for Conte to first consider a move for the Roma starlet this summer.

Indeed, not only would Zaniolo’s impressive positional versatility make him a much better fit for the 52-year-old manager’s system at Spurs, but the fact the nine-time capped international is six years Dybala’s junior also means he is a player with a much higher ceiling, not to mention a much more sellable asset further down the line.

Man Utd preparing ambitious move to sign £80m+ superstar who wants Premier League move

Manchester United are now preparing an ambitious move to sign an £80m+ mega star who is keen to complete a Premier League switch, according to reports.

Man Utd preparing £80m+ offer to sign Juventus forward

The debt may be increasing at Old Trafford, but that’s not set to stand in the way of INEOS’ spending in 2026. According to recent reports, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co. have set their sights on major upgrades for Ruben Amorim ahead of 2026, which could include one of Elliot Anderson or Adam Wharton.

The Premier League duo are wanted men in English football and whoever wins the race to secure their signatures next year will land transformative midfield additions.

Midfield is certainly an area of concern for Amorim, who needs the same overhaul at the heart of his side that his frontline received last summer.

As things stand, the former Sporting CP manager has an ageing Casemiro, an untrusted Manuel Ugarte, Bruno Fernandes and the unhappy Kobbie Mainoo to call on in his deep midfield roles. And given that Bryan Mbeumo is heading to AFCON, Fernandes may be forced to push ahead into one of the No.10 roles.

A deep-lying midfielder should be top of INEOS’ priority list, but that is unlikely to stand in the way of even more attacking additions. According to reports in Spain, Man United are now preparing an offer to sign Kenan Yildiz from Juventus worth as much as €100m (£88m in 2026.

The Juventus star reportedly wants a Premier League move, handing those at Old Trafford a major boost in pursuit of his signature next year.

"Magnificent" Yildiz would spearhead Man Utd rise

Aside from Fernandes, it’s difficult to pick out a true world-beater in Man United’s strongest side. They’re beginning to form the foundation of a side capable of getting back into the Premier League’s top four, but still lack that big standout player that all top sides can boast across Europe.

Yildiz would be that superstar. The 20-year-old is already one of, if not the top stars at Juventus and was dubbed “magnificent” by scout Jacek Kulig last season.

After 21 games in all competitions this season, Yildiz has scored six goals and created another six with plenty more to come throughout the campaign.

Man Utd could sign Bruno replacement who's "the most underrated CM in Europe"

Manchester United look set to make a move for one player should Bruno Fernandes depart.

ByEthan Lamb

In the current market, signing a player of the 20-year-old’s quality who can play all across the frontline for around £88m could even turn into an undeniable bargain. If United have the funds, then a deal to sign Yildiz should be seen as a no-brainer next year.
