Liverpool fans slam Roberto Carlos’ reason for preferring Ederson to Alisson

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to slam Roberto Carlos’ reasoning behind why he prefers Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson over Alisson Becker.

The former Real Madrid left-back told the Raw Take podcast: “I like Alisson because he is tall and has good positioning but Ederson can play in any position – goalkeeper, centre-back, midfielder – he has great quality.

“So I am sorry Alisson, but to me Ederson is a bit better because he plays better with his feet.”

Some Reds supporters down below have taken exception to these comments as they feel a goalkeeper should be judged on things a keeper is expected to do, not for their ability to play in a position away from the goalmouth.

One fan sarcastically said that Andres Iniesta is a better goalkeeper than Iker Casillas in a humorous retaliation to Carlos’ strange comments, whilst more fans are just outright baffled by the former Brazilian international’s reasoning for his choice.

Alisson completed more passes per game in the Premier League last season in comparison to the former Benfica goalkeeper anyway, recording an average of 28.3 compared to Ederson’s 24.2 – Carlos really doesn’t have much weight behind his argument.

Leeds shouldn’t waste Jack Clarke windfall on loan fees

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

With Jack Clarke looking like finally making his long-awaited move to Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United may well start spending this summer.

The Whites are apparently set to receive an initial £8.5m for the 18-year-old, but more than £1m of that could be going to Manchester City as the Championship side look to loan Jack Harrison again.

What’s the story?

According to Football Insider, the Yorkshire club have made a loan offer for the winger that includes a fee of over £1m. It is unknown what the exact figure is or how much of Harrison’s reported £51,000-a-week wages Leeds would be paying.

The wide man spent last season out on loan at Elland Road, and it has been widely reported that Marcelo Bielsa is keen on bringing him back for 2019/20.

Can’t waste Clarke fee

Leeds may be getting less than they wanted for their teenage sensation, but they can’t afford to waste a single penny of it.

The Yorkshire side have previously been unable to splash the cash due to their reported sell before they buy policy, but they would be foolish to use this money on loan fees as this report suggests.

Spending over £1m on loaning Harrison for a season would be an example of wastefulness – after all, the 22-year-old wasn’t that good last season. Four goals and three assists in 2018/19 shows that he didn’t have that great of an impact at Elland Road during his first temporary spell.

Bringing Harrison back may not be a bad move, but parting ways with over £1m for a season of his services doesn’t show good value for money.

Leeds have been linked with plenty of loans this summer, but if they’re all going to cost these types of fees it would indicate bad business.

Spending their Clarke windfall on loan fees and wages for those players is a very risky move. If they don’t go up in 2020 then they will be back to square one with less money and without one of their brightest young talents.

Newcastle Transfer Roundup: Vieira update, Mounié interest, Lisbon star on radar

[ad_pod ]

Today’s Newcastle transfer roundup includes a candidate ruling himself out of replacing Rafa Benitez, interest in a former Premier League striker and the pursuit of a Sporting Lisbon star.

Vieira doesn’t want Newcastle move

Patrick Vieira has ruled himself out a move to Newcastle. As reported by Get French Football News, the former Arsenal man said at a press conference, “I am at OGC Nice long-term. I have no intention of going elsewhere. I’ve always felt good here & with the people around me. I can’t see myself anywhere other than OGC Nice.”

Interest in Mounié

TEAMtalk is reporting that Newcastle have made enquiries about the potential signing of Huddersfield Town’s Stevie Mounié. The Benin striker is seemingly available this summer following the Terriers’ relegation from the Premier League last season, with Huddersfield set to sell. Watford and Crystal Palace also interested.

The Toon want Dost

According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Newcastle want to sign Sporting Lisbon’s Dutch striker Bas Dost. The former Wolfsburg striker currently has a deal that runs until 2021. The North-East club are joined by Sevilla in their interest in him.

Spurs make surprise move for Olmo, talks underway

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Tottenham Hotspur have made a €25m (£22.4m) bid for Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Dani Olmo, per Mundo Deportivo.

What’s the word?

The report states that Spurs are set to make significant additions to their squad this summer, having already acquired Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon and Jack Clarke from Leeds United.

The club have made an offer for Olmo, the report claims, as well as a €68m (£60.9m) bid for Giovani Lo Celso, the Real Betis attacking midfielder.

Olmo, who helped Spain win the European Under-21 Championships this summer, is said to be close to a move to north London, with negotiations between Spurs, Dinamo and the player’s representatives accelerating over the past few days.

Mundo Deportivo claim that, once the 21-year-old is signed, Spurs will focus on bringing in Lo Celso.

Bolt from the blue

This is a turn-up for the books.

Spurs have not been heavily linked with Olmo but the report claims that negotiations are already at an advanced stage.

The youngster has already made over 100 appearances for Dinamo, scoring 26 goals and providing 21 assists, and is capable of playing in attacking midfield and on both flanks.

He has won 10 caps for Spain’s Under-21 side and would be a versatile, promising option for Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs, it seems, are keen to rejuvenate their attacking options and moves for both Olmo and Lo Celso would leave them well-stocked as they look to add more firepower, with Harry Kane the club’s only trusted senior striker after the departure of Fernando Llorente.

Vincent Janssen, of course, played in just three Premier League games last season.

Bringing in Olmo, who can provide depth and quality in several attacking positions, appears to make all the sense in the world.

Most of Manchester City’s key players are already back at the camp and getting ready for their 2019 summer pre-season tour.

The back-to-back Premier League champions have a busy couple of weeks ahead of them.

Their Asia tour starts with a clash against familiar faces in West Ham at the Nanjing Olympic Stadium.

After that, they face more English opposition in the matches against Wolves and Newcastle at the same venue before moving to Shanghai for the latter stages of the tournament.

To finish things off, the Citizens will face Kitchee FC at the Hong Kong Stadium on 24 July and finally Yokohama F Marinos in Japan.

Raheem Sterling is one star who has been confirmed as one player who will take part in the tour.

With that knowledge in mind, City’s prolific winger has already been training pretty hard to arrive in shape.

His latest Instagram story shows him hard at work ahead of the first summer obstacles and using the gym well into the evening.

The 24-year-old forward had a truly magnificent season in the most recent campaign.

In 2018/19, he played 51 games in all competitions and managed to score a total of 25 goals and provided 18 assists.

It appears that Sterling is not resting on his laurels ahead of the new campaign, and fans will be delighted to see he is maintaining the highest standard of professionalism during the off-season.

Liverpool fans are furious with FSG’s attempts to trademark ‘Liverpool’

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Liverpool fans on Twitter are certainly not happy with what the club’s owners are attempting to do.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), an American company who own the Reds with John W. Henry and Tom Werner in charge of proceedings, have submitted an application to trademark the name of the city in order to protect the club and the supporters from ‘inauthentic products’.

It will only be trademarked in the context of ‘football products and services’, but fans of the Merseyside outfit on Twitter certainly aren’t happy with the news.

They feel that classic match-day experiences such as flag and t-shirt sellers outside the stadium will be hampered by this move, whilst one also asks if local football teams will also be at risk if they have the word ‘Liverpool’ associated with them – local side City of Liverpool FC called the decision ‘outrageous’ on Twitter.

Let’s take a look at what the furious Liverpool supporters on Twitter have said about the whole ordeal…

Arsenal fans refuse to believe Ozil to DC United link

[ad_pod ]

With the transfer window less than 24 hours from closing, there are bound to be some crazy stories breaking as the Premier League clubs put the finishing touches to their squads ahead of the new season.

Of course, plenty of deals have already been completed, including Wayne Rooney’s switch to Derby County. The former Manchester United and Everton ace will join the Rams in January once he has finished the MLS season with DC United to take up a player-coach role.

Great news for Phillip Cocu and co, but not so much for the US side. However, it is being reported that they are eyeing a move for Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil – seemingly to replace the 33-year-old – based on comments from Steven Goff.

Should they be able to capture the former Germany international, it would be a surprising transfer to say the least, and the Gunners fans do not believe the link in the slightest.

They have taken to Twitter to share their shock. You can see some of the best reactions below.

An unfamiliar formation: How Arsenal should set up against Newcastle this weekend

[ad_pod ]

After all of the madness of the transfer window, the new Premier League campaign is finally upon us! Arsenal will kick of their season with a visit to Newcastle.

With some players out injured, Unai Emery faces some difficult decisions, and may be forced to make some unfamiliar choices. To get the best out of the players currently at his disposal, we look at how his team should line up at St.James’ Park on Sunday.

In goal, Bernd Leno picks himself. Following the departure of Petr Cech, he is the only experienced goalkeeper left.

New signing David Luiz is fit and ready to start, and should slot right into the heart of the defence to be flanked by Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis. With Rob Holding still on the sidelines, these three would be the perfect combination to start as the Emirates outfit set-up in a flexible 5-4-1 formation.

[ad_pod ]

Hector Bellerin is still missing, so Ainsley Maitland-Niles should take up a position at wing-back. On the other side, Sead Kolasinac would be the best choice. Kieran Tierney is also still in recovery, and so is not yet ready to play.

In the centre of the park, Emery has plenty of options. Lucas Torreira is almost certain to play, whilst Dani Ceballos could make his debut since moving on loan from Real Madrid. Granit Xhaka should be the other player in a three-man midfield.

Slightly further forward, Mesut Ozil should appear on the team sheet. Although he has been linked with a move away, he is still at the club and remains one of their most creative options. Emery has often set up with wingers in a 4-2-3-1 line-up but, with new arrival Nicolas Pepe yet to play and Alex Iwobi moving on to Everton, there is a lack of experience on the flanks, which may lead to a switch-up. Alexandre Lacazette is also doubtful and is still being assessed ahead of the match. The former Sevilla boss should not take any risks.

Up front, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should lead the line. He scored 31 goals last season and is the Gunners’ biggest threat. He is also there only fully-fit option, which makes his inclusion straightforward.
